    “My wife got diagnosed with breast cancer. You know, (my dog) Ben dies. It was just a lot of emotion. And when you do what we do, you endure. You do your job.

    “And I think what happened, I couldn’t predict it, but when (the Buckeyes) won, I was so happy … because of what they faced and all the stuff behind the scenes. It was like almost, I don’t know, maybe a release of all that pent-up stuff, and it just got the best of me.

    “I’m an emotional guy in general, and when things touch my heart, I’m not good at talking when that happens.”

    Herbstreit played quarterback at Ohio State from 1989-1992. After the Buckeyes’ win Monday night in Atlanta, he embraced his son, Zak, an Ohio State tight end.

    He called his on-camera emotional moment on ESPN “almost like a perfect storm.”

    “My son had heart failure two years ago,” Herbstreit said to McAfee. “They were talking about a heart replacement there for a while, and he had to medically retire.

    “And (head coach) Ryan Day – I think the gratitude I have for Ryan Day putting his arms around Zak and keeping him involved, you know, he’s almost like a GA with what he was doing. And Ryan insisted on putting his arms around him, (offensive coordinator) Chip Kelly, all these guys.

    “So there was that side of it looking down and seeing him in his jersey after, you know, potentially facing replacing your heart to that.”

    When ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt, who was on the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, brought on Herbstreit and Chris Fowler, who were up in the broadcast booth, during the postgame show Monday, Herbstreit appeared to be trying to keep himself together.

    “I’m a little emotional. I’m just fired up for these guys,” Herbstreit said. “You know, when I call these games, I’m incredibly objective. I love all these Ohio State teams. But this team, because what they went through, to get to this point, you’re just happy. You’re just happy for them.”

    Herbstreit briefly went off camera and was back with a tissue. He dabbed at his eyes, visibly working to keep his composure.

    “I talk to these players. I talk to these coaches. I know what they faced after that Michigan game. I know the pain, and I know that a lot of people thought, ‘To hell with this guy,’” Herbstreit said, referring to Day.

    “I know what that did. That’s a real-life thing. To have to put that away … he just handled it, took the high road, didn’t say anything, went out and got his team ready to play four games, and they won it. And I think that’s why I’m emotional is what these guys faced.”

    Kirk Herbstreit couldn’t help but get emotional in the broadcast booth on Monday night.

    The longtime ESPN college football announcer, who has become one of the key voices in the sport the past few decades, had a pretty good reason. His Buckeyes had just won a national championship.

    Herbstreit was on the call with Chris Fowler for Ohio State’s 34-23 win over Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff championship game on Monday night. The Buckeyes rolled over the Fighting Irish early at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and then held on down the stretch for one final push to secure their first title since 2014.

    Herbstreit was talking with Fowler and Scott Van Pelt after the win, and he had to pause while talking about his former team’s championship.

    “Oh, don’t start with me man. I’m a little emotional,” he told Van Pelt, his voice breaking up. “I’m just fired up for these guys.

    “You know, when I call these games I’m incredibly objective. I love all these Ohio State teams, but this team because of what they went through to get to this point, you’re just happy, you know? You’re just happy for them.”

    Van Pelt and Fowler then kept going, and Herbstreit grabbed a tissue to wipe his eyes.

    Herbstreit was born in Ohio, and then spent four seasons playing for the Buckeyes as their quarterback from 1989-1992. He was the starter and team captain as a senior, too, when he threw for 1,904 yards and four touchdowns. His dad both played and coached at Ohio State, including when they won a national championship during the 1960 season, and one of his kids is a walk-on tight end with the program.

    Naturally, like Van Pelt noted, the connections for Herbstreit are there.

    With his long-running ties to the program — and after seeing how Ohio State rallied after losing to Michigan at the end of the regular season, which kept them out of the Big Ten championship game — it’s hard to blame Herbstreit for getting emotional.

    “We’re all from somewhere,” Van Pelt told him. “There’s zero apologies [needed] to explain the emotion.”

    While the former Ohio State quarterback has drawn the ire of many Buckeye fans because of his comments last month describing 15-20% of the Ohio State fanbase as “lunatic fringe,” the ESPN commentator says he’ll be as happy as anyone – even if he can’t openly root for the Buckeyes during Monday night’s game broadcast – if Ohio State wins this year’s national championship.

    “At the end of the day, I’m no different than anybody sitting on their couch, I just prepare and talk about it,” Herbstreit said at Saturday’s national championship game media day. “I’m an Ohio State junkie. And so when they do well, and I’m able to enjoy it, there’s nobody more thrilled than me. So yeah, I’ll be locked in, and if that scarlet gray confetti comes down, I’m gonna be trying to race to get to the field to hug my son and be a part of that celebration if they’re lucky enough to win.”

    Herbstreit’s pointed comments during the fourth quarter of Ohio State’s first-round College Football Playoff game against Tennessee came in defense of Ryan Day, who faced heavy scrutiny entering the CFP after the Buckeyes suffered their fourth straight loss to Michigan in November. While Day’s job security is no longer in question with Ohio State’s run to the national championship game, Herbstreit continued to praise the Ohio State coach on Saturday, expressing a belief that Day will cement his standing as one of college football’s elite coaches if the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame on Monday night.

    “He’s the winningest active coach in the country,” Herbstreit said. “I know that four straight losses to Michigan, for some people, really resonates. And I get it; I mean, I went through that as a player, there’s nothing worse. I’m not belittling that. I’m just saying, if you look at what he’s done – to me, what he’s done after Michigan, I mean, that was a state of disarray, just the Ohio State football family, when I say team, fans, just everything, fourth straight loss. And then the flag situation and the response on the back end. And for him to right the ship, and have this team play the way they did against Tennessee, and then go out to Pasadena and play as dominant as they did out there, and then to take on Texas’ best shot … I mean, he wins big games.

    “So for me, what he’s done after Michigan says everything I would need to know. If that confetti comes down Monday night, he gets the last laugh. And it’ll be interesting to see his response, because you go into a different stratosphere when you win a national championship. And I don’t think he needs that, but if he gets it, I mean that’s, nobody can say anything to him, regardless of what happens in any game when you win a national championship.”

    Herbstreit has always made a point of remaining objective while calling games – to the point that he’s sometimes seen as being overly critical of Ohio State – but he said it was hard not to cheer when Jack Sawyer secured the Buckeyes’ place in the national championship game with his 83-yard scoop-and-score against Texas in the CFP semifinals.

    “I try to do a pretty good job. I don’t go out of my way to like, I just call a game, but I’m a fan, I’m a human. So when he returned that touchdown, I mean, part of me is kind of like the fan in me comes out,” said Herbstreit, who’s called all of Ohio State’s College Football Playoff games alongside Chris Fowler. “Then they do Carmen Ohio (after the game), that for me is where I can finally let my guard down and be in the moment.”

    Herbstreit feels a particularly strong connection to this year’s team because of his son, Zak Herbstreit, who will be on the Buckeyes’ sideline as a member of their roster for the final time on Monday night. While Zak, a walk-on tight end, is no longer able to play football after he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2023, he’s remained with the team for the past two seasons. Kirk is grateful for the unwavering support Day and Ohio State have given his son.

    “The way Ryan Day and the staff put their arms around him, found him a role, it wasn’t just like, ‘Hey, you have a heart, see you later,’ it was, ‘Hey, let’s find a way to keep you involved.’ And he’s almost like a GA, really,” Kirk Herbstreit said. “He’s thrilled. I don’t know if there’s anybody on the team that’s more thrilled for the team than Zak. And the way the guys have been, I’m watching him on the sideline, he’s a part of it, he’s interacting, what a life experience for him to be able to have for the rest of his life after what he was facing, maybe a heart transplant just two years ago, and then to be here. So I don’t take any of that for granted. And for me to be able to call these games, looking down every once in a while and seeing him down there, yeah, it’s cool. It takes all I’ve got not to get a tear in my eye when I’m going through that, it’s awesome.”

    Next season, however, Kirk will be watching his youngest son play for Ohio State’s biggest rival. Chase Herbstreit, a three-star quarterback from Cincinnati’s St. Xavier High School, signed with Michigan in December. Despite his history as a Buckeye, Kirk said he fully supports his son’s decision to play for the team up north.

    “It’s his life,” Kirk said. “My dad was really cool with me, he was a former captain (at Ohio State), and I was recruited by a lot of schools, and he kind of stayed out of it. I knew I was gonna be a Buckeye all along. Of all my sons, my son Chase is the biggest Ohio State junkie, cry when they lose kind of kid. But Michigan gave him an opportunity. There are so many kids in Ohio that grow up that way where they love Ohio State and they dream of playing for Ohio State but the opportunity’s not there, so you’re not gonna not play football. So he was talking to a lot of other schools, and Michigan ended up providing an opportunity to go and be on scholarship. And for him, it was a no-brainer.

    “I’m there as a sounding board, I’m there to listen to him, and I’m there to be his biggest fan. So if he wants to go to Michigan, then I support it 1,000% as a dad. It’s a great program, unbelievable academics, great institution and I’m honored that he has a chance to go up there and play. And I’ll be right there with him, cheering him on.”

    ESPN college football analyst and former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit had no problem with his youngest son, Chase, committing to play for Michigan last month. The Wolverines were the only school to offer Chase Herbstreit, who also had reported interest in Ohio State and Notre Dame, but the offer from the Buckeyes never came. And that’s okay, according to his father.

    “It’s his life,” Herbstreit said this week in Atlanta during media availability ahead of the national championship. “My dad was really cool with me, he was a former captain (at Ohio State), and I was recruited by a lot of schools, and he kind of stayed out of it. I knew I was gonna be a Buckeye all along. Of all my sons, my son Chase is the biggest Ohio State junkie, cry when they lose kind of kid. But Michigan gave him an opportunity.  There are so many kids in Ohio that grow up that way where they love Ohio State and they dream of playing for Ohio State but the opportunity’s not there, so you’re not gonna not play football.

    “So he was talking to a lot of other schools, and Michigan ended up providing an opportunity to go and be on scholarship. And for him, it was a no-brainer. I’m there as a sounding board, I’m there to listen to him, and I’m there to be his biggest fan. So if he wants to go to Michigan, then I support it 1,000% as a dad. It’s a great program, unbelievable academics, great institution and I’m honored that he has a chance to go up there and play. And I’ll be right there with him, cheering him on.”

    Chase threw for 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 649 yards and eight touchdowns this season at Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier.

    “Michigan was a school I fell in love with ever since I visited and can’t wait to get started,” Chase Herbstreit told 247Sports in December.

    Another one of Kirk Herbstreit’s sons, Zak, is a walk-on tight end at Ohio State and will be on the sideline for his final game with the Buckeyes against Notre Dame.

    Every comment the Falcons have made so far about Cousins says they are looking to trade him. However, the Cousins ultimately holds the power with his no-trade clause which he would have to waive for a trade to be processed.

    The highly paid quarterback will look to land somewhere that is a seamless transition and there is no better place than where he spent many years, the Minnesota Vikings.

    Falcons should call the Vikings regarding Kirk Cousins

    The Minnesota Vikings had a great first year out of the Kirk Cousins era with a 14-win season. But it was all for nothing as they got throttled in their final two games—largely thanks to Sam Darnold.

    I don’t know how you could watch Sam Darnold and think yeah, I want to pay that guy. He is great with a clean pocket but as soon as things break down, he breaks down. That is why I see the Vikings being too smart to commit big bucks to their 2024 starter—leave that to the Browns or someone.

    That leaves the Vikings with J.J. McCarthy. It is clear he is their future but the Falcons can dangle carrot in front of them with a player they have tremendous respect for—Kirk Cousins.

    It is a win all around, the Falcons move on from their historically terrible signing, the Vikings get a great leader and bridge option back, and Cousins lands somewhere comfortable.

    I am sure Vikings fans will love this idea (sarcasm). The immobile quarterback frustrated a lot of fans but there is one thing they cannot deny, he had many fantastic games and won a lot of games.

    In no way am I saying he is a franchise guy—they are hoping McCarthy will be—but rather a great option to lean on early or fall back on late if things don’t go well. He did a great job mentoring Michael Penix Jr. so why wouldn’t you want that for McCarthy?

    The Falcons should have the Vikings on speed dial in the coming months because they can pull off a mutually beneficial trade.

  • Former Agent Calls Out Falcons ‘Gag’, Predicts Kirk Cousins Won’t Be Backup


    Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot tried to convey the idea on Jan. 9 that the team is “very comfortable” with Kirk Cousins as their backup quarterback in 2025.

    Some Falcons fans appear convinced Fontenot was being sincere. But a lot of NFL pundits are not sold.

    Former sports agent and NFL contract expert Joel Corry is among the doubters. On Jan. 17, he predicted the Falcons to release Cousins before the team owes him a contract bonus in March.

    As Corry explained, the Falcons will owe Cousins $10 million on the fifth league day of 2025. The first day of the 2025 league year is March 12. So, if Cousins is still on the Atlanta roster at 4 pm ET on March 16, he will receive his bonus.

    The Falcons have until then to either trade or release him to avoid paying the bonus. With no mention of trade possibilities, Corry projected the Falcons to release Cousins.

    Any appearance between now and March 16 the Falcons give that they are interested in keeping Cousins as a backup, in my opinion, is a bluff. If Fontenot presents the possibility that Cousins won’t hit the open market, perhaps he can convince a team to send the Falcons a draft pick for the veteran quarterback.

    The AJC’s D. Orlando Ledbetter used a stronger word than bluff to describe Fontenot’s efforts to convince the league he is interested in keeping Cousins as a backup.

    Cousins led the Falcons to a 7-7 record while having a league-high 16 interceptions during 2024. In his final five games, he posted a 62.7% completion percentage with just one touchdown and nine interceptions.

    Cousins also took 11 sacks while averaging 7.5 yards per pass during that stretch. The Falcons went 1-4.

    Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. replaced Cousins in the lineup on Dec. 22. Penix led Atlanta to a 1-2 record but overall, looked impressive as a passer and athlete in the pocket.

    Cousins has gone 83-74-2 in his NFL career as a starter. He will turn 37 years old in August. The Falcons signed him to a 4-year, $180 million contract with $90 million guaranteed, last offseason.
