  • What Santos learned about shooting from watching Steph, Klay

What Santos learned about shooting from watching Steph, Klay originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

As Gui Santos earns more minutes in coach Steve Kerr’s rotation, the young Warriors forward finds himself sharing a court with Steph Curry more often than ever.

It’s an opportunity to play alongside the greatest shooter of all time, and Santos is taking advantage of every minute. And he soaked up everything he could when Curry’s fellow Splash Brother, Klay Thompson, was still on the team.

“I’m the guy that likes to watch,” Santos told reporters after Saturday’s practice. “So, I’ve always been watching how [Curry] shoots — the movement, the footwork and all the little details that you see. I’m a guy that likes to watch it, especially like last year, Klay was here, too. So there was another guy that I was always watching to see how he moves without the ball to get set, to shoot the ball, because the shot begins before you shoot the ball. How you set up your body before you get the ball.

“So with these guys, you can learn a lot.”

Santos, 22, was playing on a non-guaranteed contract until the Warriors chose to keep him on board and fully guarantee his deal at the Jan. 7 deadline. Up to that point of the 2024-25 NBA season, Santos had appeared in 11 NBA games for a total of 59 minutes.

He now has appeared in 24 games and played at least 19 minutes in eight of the Warriors’ last nine games. And last season with Thompson on the team, Santos spent plenty of time on court with the Splash Bros during his 23 games in the NBA.

And between the two sharpshooters, Santos noticed a key technique he tries to emulate.

“One thing that I see they do a lot is to keep the hands up after they shoot,” Santos said. “So, every time they shoot, they keep the hands up. Of course for Steph, it’s kind of different because he has way more different, way more hard shots than what I have. So he doesn’t have these every time, but every time that Steph has a wide-open shot, you can see he’s shooting, and he keeps the hand straight.”

Santos recently recorded a career-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 131-106 win over the Chicago Bulls on 7-of-10 shooting and 5 of 6 from 3-point range. While his shooting has slowed down in recent games, it’s clear Santos’ watchful eye is starting to pay off.

Growing up, Santos was always a fan of basketball. He loved watching games and studying the players’ moves, trying to learn as much as he could from the pros. One duo that always caught his attention was Steph Curry and Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors.

Santos admired their incredible shooting skills and wanted to emulate them on the court. So, he dedicated countless hours to watching their games, analyzing their shooting techniques, and practicing their moves on the court.

From Steph, Santos learned the importance of precision and consistency in shooting. Steph’s incredible accuracy from beyond the arc showed Santos the value of proper form and repetition. He realized that by focusing on his technique and practicing consistently, he could improve his shooting percentage significantly.

From Klay, Santos learned the importance of confidence and composure in shooting. Klay’s ability to stay calm under pressure and knock down shots in clutch moments inspired Santos to work on his mental game. He learned that having the confidence to take and make tough shots is just as crucial as having the physical skills.

Overall, watching Steph and Klay has taught Santos valuable lessons about shooting that have helped him become a better player. By studying their techniques, practicing consistently, and staying confident in his abilities, Santos has seen a significant improvement in his shooting skills on the court. And he owes it all to the inspiration he found in two of the best shooters in the game.

  • Jason Kidd must quickly correct his Klay Thompson mistake and make key change

The Dallas Mavericks were able to edge away a 137-136 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night, as the Mavericks were able to score at a very high volume despite New Orleans testing Dallas’ defense on the other side of the ball all night long. Dallas finally got some help from the injury department as Naji Marshall returned to the lineup after missing four games due to illness, and Marshall chipped in five points against his former team despite being on a minutes restriction.

Dallas still isn’t fully healthy by any stretch of the imagination, but they are getting closer to that territory with each passing game and have survived this Doncic-less stretch respectably, even if they have dropped one too many clutch contests. Ever since Doncic went down on Christmas Day versus the Minnesota Timberwolves, Dallas has gone 7-12, and they could easily be around .500 over this stretch if they didn’t drop so many close games as aforementioned.

The Mavericks still have the opportunity to be an elite team in the postseason this year, but they have to build up so momentum once the All-Star break comes to a close, and they could certainly use some more depth at the backup wing or big man position. Something else that can help the Mavericks maximize their lineup ahead of the playoffs would be to get Klay Thompson more involved offensively.

Kidd must keep running actions to unlock Thompson’s offense

Dallas was trending toward making Thompson more of a focal point in their offense back in December, but Thompson hasn’t been allotted the same level of spacing or looks with Doncic out of the lineup due to injury. In Dallas’ last two contests, though, Thompson has attempted 15 field goals each, and it has revolutionized Dallas’ offense. Kidd emphasizing getting Thompson more touches has been game-changing for the Mavs’ offense, but it wasn’t always this way.

Prior to Dallas’ last two games, Thompson had only attempted 15 or more field goals twice in the entire month of January, which simply isn’t enough for a movement shooter of his pedigree, even if buckets were harder to come by with Doncic sidelined. The Mavericks and their coaching staff were adamant about getting Thompson more involved offensively earlier in the season, but it seems like that notion shifted until very recently.

Dallas has gotten more creative with their off-ball actions to get Thompson open recently, as they are using a variety of pin-down, back screens, and cross screens to feed Thompson open looks on the perimeter and as a cutter. These actions tend to be more fruitful with Doncic in the game, but the Mavericks should’ve been trying to get Thompson more involved offensively all throughout January, as it could’ve been the perfect time to let Thompson get more comfortable as a secondary ball handler.

Dallas’ offense is best maximized when Thompson is hitting on all cylinders, and while they don’t need to force the ball down his throat when he’s having an off shooting night, they could definitely look at him as a source of offense in pivotal scenarios more often. On the contrary, when Thompson is on a heater like he was during the first quarter of Dallas’ Monday night victory over the Washington Wizards, the Mavericks need to do anything they can to keep getting him the ball, as Thompson made seven 3-pointers in the first quarter of that game.

Thompson getting going from beyond the arc like that pays huge dividends for Dallas’ offense, as it gives Thompson the ability to use his pump fake and playmaking abilities more successfully when the defense is pressed to contain his outside shooting. Kidd even referenced this after Dallas’ win over Washington on Monday.

“We set screens, we ran stuff for him,” Kidd said. “He responded in a positive way. Klay is very unselfish…[his teammates] made a conscious effort to get Klay going early and he responded in a positive way and just made the game easier for everybody else.”

Kidd has done a phenomenal job at encouraging his team to find Thompson over the last few games, and this level of urgency must continue moving forward to fully unlock his game.

Jason Kidd, the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, made a critical mistake in the game against the Golden State Warriors by leaving Klay Thompson open for multiple three-point shots. Thompson, known for his sharpshooting ability, capitalized on the defensive lapse and helped the Warriors secure a crucial win.

In order to prevent similar mistakes in the future, Kidd must quickly correct his error and make a key change in the team’s defensive strategy. This may include assigning a more tenacious defender on Thompson or implementing tighter rotations to prevent open looks from beyond the arc.

It is imperative that Kidd addresses this issue promptly and ensures that his team is better prepared to defend against elite shooters like Thompson. Making this key change could make a significant difference in the Mavericks’ performance and help them secure more victories in the future.

  • “Him for Fox” – Warriors fans put ‘Klay Thompson’ replacement in trade discussions amid underwhelming run

Buddy Hield was once regarded as the Golden State Warriors’ replacement for Klay Thompson, who won four NBA titles during his time with the team. Hield, who is also a lethal shooter, was signed in the last offseason, following Thompson‘s departure in free agency to play with the Dallas Mavericks.

Hield, however, has not lived up to expectations, despite an impressive start with the team. He is shooting a respectable 36.6 percent from the three-point range on seven attempts per game. Yet, it was his lowest three-point percentage since 2020.

In his recent game against the Utah Jazz, Hield only put up two points on 1-of-7 shooting, triggering discussions among fans about his trade value, and if it is high time for the team to trade him.

Fans came up with numerous trade ideas for Hield, ranging from an All-Star to some bench warmers in the NBA in an attempt to salvage the struggling Warriors’s season.

“Him for fox,” one fan said.

“Send him to Pistons for Malik Beasley!,” said another fan.

“I would take him for zeke naji,” said one more fan.

Meanwhile, other fans discussed his trade value, which most of them think has shrunk since starting the season well alongside Steph Curry and Draymond Green.

“No team wants this dude…You have to find a team that wants him and his contract(4 years)… He’s untradeable right now…,” said one fan.

“trade value so f**king low rn. bro imagine we keep him…,” a fan said.

“I really thought Buddy Hield will be something else when he arrived in Golden State. Now I know why he get traded everytime,” said another fan.

Hield is averaging 11.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game in 23 minutes. His current scoring average is his lowest since his rookie season in 2016, when he was still playing with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Aside from the Pelicans, he has played with the Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, and the Philadelphia 76ers before going to the Warriors in the offseason.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr puts full trust in Buddy Hield

Despite Buddy Hield’s struggles, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has emphasized that he is giving Hield his full trust in shooting the ball. Kerr said that he is willing to give Hield more freedom in spite of his shooting woes this season.

“I trust him…I believe he’ll make the next shot…I’m I’m going to keep playing him. I’m going to keep trusting him,” Kerr said.

Kerr has been playing Buddy Hield mostly off the bench this season. However, he has been inconsistent recently, only scoring in double digits three times in the last eight games.

The Warriors are currently at 23-23. They have won five of their last 12 games.
