Season series: Rangers lead 1-0 with a 2-1 road victory on Jan. 11

Vegas has lost 3 of its last 4 games, including a 2-1 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday as a heavy (-285) home favorite as the Under (6.5) hit. G Ilya Samsonov did his part, stopping 22 of 24 shots, but the offense couldn’t find much. C Tomas Hertl scored the only goal for VGK.

The Rangers are also in a rough patch, dropping 3 straight games, including a 6-3 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday as -136 road favorites as the Over (6) hit. C J.T. Miller tried to keep New York in it with 2 goals, but they couldn’t slow down RW David Pastrnak, who lit them up with a hat trick and an assist.

Golden Knights at Rangers projected goalies

    Adin Hill (19-9-4, 2.65 GAA, .901 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Jonathan Quick (6-5-2, 3.11 GAA, .897 SV%, 2 SO)

Hill is 1-2-2 in his last 5 starts, with his latest being a 4-3 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars, giving up 4 goals on 28 shots. He last faced the Rangers on Jan. 26, 2024, and earned the win after stopping 36 of 38 shots.

Quick had a tough January, starting 4 games with a 1-1-2 record, a 4.19 GAA, and .876 SV%. He hasn’t faced the Golden Knights since 2022, when he allowed 4 goals on 51 shots in a loss as a member of the LA Kings.

Golden Knights at Rangers picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Golden Knights 4, Rangers 3

    Moneyline

    BET GOLDEN KNIGHTS (-125).

While both teams are struggling, I really like Vegas at these odds, even on the road. The Rangers haven’t been great at home (12-11-2), and with backup Quick expected to be in goal, it’s a good spot for Vegas. Hill is a big upgrade over Quick, with G Igor Shesterkin getting a rest after a tough loss to the Bruins.

Vegas has been solid all year, sitting in the top 10 for both goals scored and goals allowed. They also have the rest advantage, having not played since Thursday while the Rangers are on the second half of a back-to-back. Vegas is the better team, and with the odds in their favor, I’m all over them on the road.

    Puck line/Against the spread

    PASS.

I do not want to play around with the puck line because both teams are not in their best form. I’ll keep my bet to the moneyline.

    Over/Under

I would lean toward the Over here, mainly because both teams have been playing poorly of late, and with Quick in net, it’s hard to feel confident. There aren’t any strong trends either way. The O/U is 2-2-2 in their last 6 meetings, and both teams are around .500 in their last 10 games (Vegas 5-4-1, Rangers 5-5). It’s a tough call, so I just say AVOID from this one.

  • Brandon Saad agrees to one-year deal with Golden Knights

The veteran forward agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million with the Vegas Golden Knights for the remainder of the season.

The 32-year-old and Blues agreed to mutually terminate the remainder of his contract, making him a free agent and able to sign with any team in the NHL.

The decision led to him forgoing roughly $5.4 million to become a free agent rather than report to the minors after being placed on waivers.

Saad’s struggles this season have been noted as he’s been held without a goal in 40 of his 43 games this season and has a total of 16 points.

The Pittsburgh native will be looking to regain his prior form where he scored 26 goals last year. He also has two Stanley Cup rings with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015.

Prior to signing with the Golden Knights, Saad had been linked to the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs, among others.

The Golden Knights have made a big splash in free agency, as they have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with forward Brandon Saad. Saad, who was previously with the Colorado Avalanche, brings a wealth of experience and skill to the Vegas lineup.

Saad is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, having won with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015. He has proven to be a reliable scorer and a versatile player who can contribute in all areas of the ice.

This signing is a significant move for the Golden Knights, who are looking to bolster their roster and make a deep playoff run next season. Saad adds depth and scoring power to an already talented forward group, and his presence will undoubtedly make the team even more formidable.

Fans of the Golden Knights are surely excited by this news, as they can look forward to seeing Saad in action wearing the black and gold next season. With his skill and experience, he is sure to make a big impact and help the team compete at the highest level.

  • Leafs, Golden Knights, Devils, Lightning among teams to watch to sign Brandon Saad

Daily Faceoff President and insider Frank Seravalli shined some details this evening on where Brandon Saad might end up.

The veteran forward has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning according to Seravalli.

The St. Louis Blues and Saad mutually agreed to terminate his contract. The agreement will see Saad sacrifice his remaining salary for this season as well as the $4.5 million owed next season, the final year of his five-year pact.

The 32-year-old has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 43 games this season.

Last season, Saad racked up 26 goals, the most since the 2015-16 season when he played for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Saad finished the season with 42 points in 82 games.

Saad signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Blues as a free agent on July 29, 2021. During his first season with the Blues, Saad tallied 24 goals and 25 assists for 49 points in 78 games, adding five points in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion was recently named to the Chicago Blackhawks Quarter-Century team. The Pittsburgh native spent seven years in Chicago and was a pivotal part of their Stanley Cup runs in 2012-13 and 2014-15. During his time in the Windy City, Saad notched 114 goals and 127 assists for 241 points in 428 regular season contests. Over the course of 906 career games, Saad has tallied 260 goals and 515 points with Chicago, Columbus, Colorado and St. Louis.

Brandon Saad is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and several teams are expected to be interested in signing the talented forward. Among the teams to watch are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Maple Leafs are in need of additional scoring depth to complement their star players, and Saad could provide just that. With his combination of skill and physicality, he would be a valuable asset for Toronto.

The Golden Knights have shown a willingness to make big moves in the past, and adding Saad to their already strong lineup could make them even more formidable. His playoff experience and ability to perform in clutch situations could be a perfect fit for Vegas.

The Devils are a young team on the rise, and adding a proven winner like Saad could help accelerate their rebuild. His leadership and experience could be invaluable in helping New Jersey take the next step in their development.

The Lightning are always a threat in the playoffs, and adding a player like Saad to their roster would only make them stronger. His two-way play and ability to contribute on both ends of the ice would be a great fit in Tampa Bay.

Overall, Brandon Saad is sure to attract plenty of interest from teams looking to improve their roster this offseason. Keep an eye on the Leafs, Golden Knights, Devils, and Lightning as potential landing spots for the talented forward.

Saad was in his fourth season with the Blues. During the prime of his career, he helped Chicago win the Stanley Cup twice: in 2013 and 2015.

Information from ESPN’s Emily Kaplan and The Associated Press was used in this report.

  • PREVIEW: Blue Jackets begin road swing at Golden Knights

After Saturday’s win over Los Angeles, the Blue Jackets had something that has been in short supply this season in the NHL.

    Time off.

The marathon that is the league schedule has felt like a sprint at times this season, including when the Blue Jackets played 13 times in the first 23 days of December leading into the holiday break.

So when the team looked at the schedule and saw four full days off after its last game, head coach Dean Evason saw it as the perfect chance for a mental and physical reset before tonight’s game at Vegas.

“It’s not just that we’re off the ice and resting our legs and our bodies, it’s forgetting about the game for a little bit,” Evason said. “You get recharged and go do something else. We believe 100 percent that the mental end of it is as important as the physical end of it. You have that attitude that you’re fresh and mentally positive, then you’ll give yourself a good opportunity to compete and have success.”

The Blue Jackets didn’t practice either Sunday or Monday, giving the players two days away from the ice to recharge both the minds and the legs. So what did the players do with the time off? Some spent it with families if they’re around, while others got caught up on the life things that often fall through the cracks in the midst of a hectic season.

For wing Zach Aston-Reese, that meant picking up his dry cleaning and shopping for curtains for his home in New Jersey.

“I was doing adult stuff,” he said with a laugh after Tuesday’s practice. “It’s been good. It’s definitely nice to get away from the rink a little bit, just reset. We had a really good practice today. I think everyone was flying out there.”

The two practice days ahead of Wednesday’s flight that kicks off a four-game road trip allowed Columbus to home in on just about everything on the ice, from 5-on-5 structure to the power play and penalty kill to specialty areas like 3-on-3 overtime and a team shootout competition won by Luca Del Bel Belluz.

“We haven’t had a practice like this today with fresh bodies and all the bodies, so we want to work on everything,” Evason said Tuesday. “We’ll try to touch everything up. We’re doing video as well to refresh our memory of how we want to play the game structurally, so it’s been a nice little break as well as the practice time used in the right direction.”

Know The Foe: Vegas Golden Knights

Head coach: Bruce Cassidy (Third season)

    Team stats: Goals per game: 3.39 (4th) | Scoring defense: 2.76 (9th) | PP: 28.3 percent (2nd) | PK: 78.2 percent (20th)

The narrative: The 2023 Stanley Cup champs are seemingly in the mix for a championship every year, making the playoffs six of their first seven seasons and on pace to do so yet again. The Golden Knights failed to repeat a season ago, losing in the first round to Dallas, but should be in the mix yet again with a veteran coach and an experienced roster – of the team’s top 14 scorers, 13 are age 26 or older – that knows how to win in the postseason.

Team leaders: Jack Eichel might be having the best season of his decorated career, as the now-28-year-old center is eighth in the NHL in scoring with a 16-48-64 line as well as a plus-27 rating on the season. Mark Stone adds 13 goals and 46 points in 37 games, while Shea Theodore is fourth among NHL blueliners with 44 points (six goals, 38 assists). Pavel Dorofeyev has a team-best 22 goals and eight in the last nine games, while Tomas Hertl has 19 on the year and also has scored eight times in the last nine. Brayden McNabb’s plus-29 rating ties Kirill Marchenko for the NHL lead.

Adin Hill leads the charge in net and is 19-9-4 with a 2.65 GAA and .901 save percentage, while Ilya Samsonov has a 2.78 GAA and .898 save percentage while going 12-6-1.

What’s new: The Golden Knights were a certified wagon through 40 games, posting a 28-9-3 record and leading the NHL in points percentage. But the last three weeks have been a struggle, with Vegas just 3-6-2 in the last 11 games. The good news for the Golden Knights? For a change this time of year, everyone is healthy outside of former Blue Jackets forward William Karlsson (more on him in a second).

Trending: This is the first meeting of the season between the two teams, with the Jackets and Knights having split the 12 all-time meetings with six wins apiece. Columbus is just 2-4-0 in Vegas.

Former CBJ: Karlsson has a 7-11-18 line in 38 games on the season but was placed on injured reserve last week with a lower body injury.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are hitting the road to take on the Vegas Golden Knights in what promises to be an exciting matchup. With both teams looking to secure crucial points in the standings, this game is sure to be a battle until the final buzzer.

The Blue Jackets will be looking to continue their recent success on the road, as they aim to build momentum for the rest of the season. Led by their strong defensive play and dynamic offensive talents, Columbus will be looking to secure a key victory against a tough Golden Knights team.

On the other side, the Golden Knights will be looking to defend their home ice and secure a win in front of their loyal fans. With a high-powered offense and solid goaltending, Vegas will be a tough challenge for the Blue Jackets.

Don’t miss out on this exciting matchup between two talented teams. Tune in to see the Blue Jackets take on the Golden Knights in what promises to be a thrilling game.

  • Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen injured after big hit in 4-3 win over the Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Defenseman Miro Heiskanen was injured in the third period of the Dallas Stars’ 4-3 overtime victory over Vegas on Tuesday night after taking a big hit from Golden Knights captain Mark Stone.

Stone fell toward Heiskanen’s left knee and thigh after getting tripped.

Dallas coach Pete DeBoer, who coached Vegas from 2019-22, said he didn’t have an update on Heiskanen.

Stone was assessed a 2-minute tripping penalty.

“I coached Mark Stone,” DeBoer said. “He’s not a dirty player. He’s not trying to hurt anybody. I know that. That doesn’t mean they can’t call a 5(-minute major) or at least look at it. That was my argument.”

Stone said he wasn’t trying to take out Heiskanen.

“I go to reach to try and angle him out and, not sure who it was, tripped me kind of as I was falling forward,” Stone said. “I really hope he’s all right. But I was just trying to make a play and got tripped into him.”

There was a brief clash between the teams while Heiskanen was sprawled on the ice.

“He’s their best defenseman,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He goes down and never looks good. He’s a great player. A ton of respect for the way he plays. But the way we saw it, Stoney got tripped and lost his balance. We’re not out there trying to take out good players in the league.”

  • Stars’ Miro Heiskanen leaves game vs. Golden Knights after scary collision with Mark Stone

The Stars have another potentially key injury on their hands after superstar defenseman Miro Heiskanen was involved in an awkward collision with Mark Stone during the third period of Tuesday’s matchup with the Golden Knights.

Stone was skating towards Heiskanen and fell into Heiskanen’s left leg, causing a very scary collision. Heiskanen needed assistance off the ice and was barely able to put any weight on his left leg.

Stone was assessed a two-minute penalty for tripping and the Stars on the ice took issue with the hit on Heiskanen. While it seemed to be shockingly dirty hit at first, which is why Dallas players reacted the way they did, Stone appeared to incidentally trip on Roope Hintz’s stick, which caused him to fall into Heiskanen’s legs.

The Stars did come back from a 3-1 deficit and go on to win the game in overtime thanks to Wyatt Johnston’s hat trick, though Heiskanen left the game and did not return.

Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen left Thursday night’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights after a scary collision with forward Mark Stone. The incident occurred in the second period when Stone inadvertently collided with Heiskanen along the boards, causing the young defenseman to fall awkwardly to the ice.

Heiskanen was slow to get up and appeared to be in considerable pain as he was helped off the ice by trainers. The Stars later confirmed that he would not return to the game due to an upper-body injury.

The 21-year-old Finn has been a key player for the Stars this season, averaging over 24 minutes of ice time per game and contributing offensively with 27 points in 43 games. Losing him to injury would be a significant blow to the team as they continue to push for a playoff spot in the competitive Central Division.

We wish Miro Heiskanen a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon. Stay tuned for updates on his condition as more information becomes available.
