  • Stars’ Miro Heiskanen injured in collision with Golden Knights’ Stone

One of the most important players on the Dallas Stars was injured in a collision in a game Tuesday night.

Miro Heiskanen was injured when Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone was tripped by Stars forward Roope Hintz and slid hard into Heiskanen’s left leg midway through the third period.

Heiskanen was slow to get up and had to be helped down the tunnel to the locker room. Stone was given a tripping penalty on the play.

Heiskanen, 25, plays in all situations for the Stars and leads the team in ice time with 25:16, nearly three minutes more than any other teammate. He is also expected to play a significant role for Team Finland at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.

The Stars did not have an immediate update on Heiskanen’s condition.

Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen was injured in a collision with Vegas Golden Knights forward Mark Stone during Thursday night’s game. The two players collided in the second period, with Heiskanen appearing to hit his head on the ice.

Heiskanen was slow to get up after the collision and had to be helped off the ice by trainers. He did not return to the game and his status for future games is uncertain.

The Stars will sorely miss Heiskanen’s presence on the blue line, as he is a key player for their defense. The team will have to rely on their depth to fill the void left by his absence.

We wish Miro Heiskanen a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon. Stay tuned for updates on his condition as more information becomes available.

  • Tom Izzo’s most memorable Big Ten wins as he inches closer to Bobby Knight’s record

Tom Izzo has been at the helm for 30 years now, and as he closes in on Bobby Knight for the all-time Big Ten wins record. I thought we should look back at some of Izzo’s most memorable Big Ten wins.

Here are his 25 most memorable Big Ten wins as Michigan State basketball coach.

    1. Big Ten win No. 1 vs. Indiana (Jan. 4, 1996)

Tom Izzo earned his first Big Ten victory in his first game of the league schedule during the 1995-96 season. It even came against the great Bobby Knight and his vaunted Hoosiers.

    2. Big Ten win No. 19 at No. 5 Purdue (Dec. 30, 1997)

Izzo’s 1997-98 squad kicked off their run for his first Big Ten regular season title by going on the road to a tough Mackey Arena, and best Gene Keady’s top-five-ranked Boilermaker team. Mateen Cleaves begins his run towards player of the year in the Big Ten.

    3. Big Ten win No. 30 vs. No. 22 Michigan (Feb. 17, 1998)

Cleaves and the Spartans helped deliver Izzo his first win over rival Michigan. Michigan State was able to escape with an 80-75 victory over No. 22-ranked Michigan.

    4. Big Ten win No. 50 vs. Northwestern (Jan. 22, 2000)

Izzo scored Big Ten win No. 50 against the Wildcats, as the Spartans continued their climb towards the 2000 national title.

    5. Big Ten win No. 59 vs. Michigan (March 4, 2000)

A record-breaking Senior Day as Mateen Cleaves, AJ Granger, and Morris Peterson said farewell in a 114-63 route.

As Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo continues to climb the ranks of Big Ten coaching legends, it’s worth taking a look back at some of his most memorable conference wins. With each victory, Izzo inches closer to surpassing the legendary Bobby Knight’s record for most conference wins in Big Ten history. Here are a few of Izzo’s standout victories that have helped solidify his place among the all-time greats in the Big Ten:

    1. Michigan State vs. Indiana (2000): In a highly anticipated matchup between two powerhouse programs, Izzo’s Spartans emerged victorious with a 73-71 win over Knight’s Hoosiers. This win showcased Izzo’s ability to outcoach one of the greatest minds in college basketball history.

    2. Michigan State vs. Wisconsin (2012): In a hard-fought battle that went into overtime, Izzo’s Spartans came out on top with a 63-60 victory over the Badgers. This win highlighted Izzo’s knack for making crucial adjustments and inspiring his team to come out on top in close games.

    3. Michigan State vs. Ohio State (2015): Facing off against a tough Ohio State team led by Thad Matta, Izzo’s Spartans pulled off a 59-56 upset on the road. This win showcased Izzo’s ability to prepare his team for tough road environments and come out on top against tough competition.

As Tom Izzo continues to add to his impressive resume in the Big Ten, it’s clear that he is well on his way to cementing his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in conference history. With each passing win, Izzo inches closer to surpassing Bobby Knight’s record and solidifying his place among the coaching elite in college basketball.

  • Stars vs Golden Knights Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

After hitting a rough patch, the Vegas Golden Knights find themselves facing the Dallas Stars once again just in a matter of days and with Tomas Hertl on a tear, the stage is set for the home team to earn a win to get back on track.

Photo By – Imagn Images. Vegas Golden Knights center Tomas Hertl (48) was named First Star of the Game.

A pair of Western Conference powerhouses will meet Tuesday for the second time in the span of just a few days.

My Stars vs. Golden Knights predictions see the home team getting revenge, with last year’s marquee deadline acquisition Tomas Hertl making an impact along the way.

Let’s take a closer look with my January 28 NHL picks.

    Stars vs Golden Knights prediction

    My best bet
Golden Knights moneyline (-121 at Pinnacle)

    My analysis
The Golden Knights are in a bit of a rut, having won just three of their past 10 games. Encouragingly, their process has looked a lot better than the results.

At 5v5 they rank 9th in expected goal share and have posted a differential of more than two goals. That has translated to a 37% share of the actual goals, slotting them 31st in that span.

They have generated 20.57 expected goals yet scored just 14, more than six below expectation. Vegas has also conceded more than four goals above expectation.

It would be one thing to underperform if lacking talent on the roster. That’s obviously not the case with this Golden Knights squad.

They have several stars up front (Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, Tomas Hertl, etc.), a loaded blueline, and a solid starting goaltender in Adin Hill.

Unless all of those players forgot how to play hockey overnight, it’s not reasonable to expect the Golden Knights to continue piling up chances yet having little to show for them.

It’s also a stretch to think Hill, who has saved more than 16 goals above expectation since the beginning of last season, will continue giving them up at a rate higher than he should.

The Golden Knights should get things moving in the right direction sooner rather than later. They started to get the ball rolling with an impressive 4-1 win over Florida last time out.

Given their home success (19-6-1), I think the Golden Knights should be able to build on that win against a Dallas Stars team that has not fared nearly as well on the road this season (13-10-0).

Stars vs Golden Knights same-game parlay (SGP)

    Golden Knights moneyline

    Tomas Hertl Over 0.5 points

    Under 6.5 goals

Tomas Hertl is red-hot offensively. He has picked up at least one point in nine consecutive games, piling up 13 along the way.

He has looked great skating alongside Pavel Dorofeyev and Victor Olofsson on the second line; as well as playing a pivotal role on an electric top power play unit.

Hertl has hit the scoresheet in four straight games on home soil and in both games against the Stars this season.

The Golden Knights and Stars both rank inside the Top-8 when it comes to limiting goals on a per game basis.

The two sides are missing a few excellent auxiliary pieces in Mason Marchment, Tyler Seguin, and William Karlsson, among others, which takes some of the scoring depth out of the mix.

Stars at Golden Knights picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Golden Knights 3, Stars 2

    Moneyline

The GOLDEN KNIGHTS (-118) are a solid play as small favorites at home against the Stars (-102).

Vegas topped the defending champ Florida Panthers 4-1 last time out on Sunday, and the Golden Knights are 10-3-1 in the past 14 games since Dec. 3, including a 3-2 victory on Dec. 6 over the Stars.

The Stars have split the past 4 road games, 2-2-0, but Dallas has a solid 7-2-0 record in the past 9 outings since Dec. 23, so be careful.

    Puck line/Against the spread

    PASS.

If you’re a little more adventurous, you could forget the moneyline and go for Golden Knights -1.5 (+200) for the chance to double up. Just remember that both meetings this season have been 1-goal games.

    Over/Under

UNDER 6 (-115) is worth a look, as Hill and Oettinger shouldn’t give up very much.

For the Stars, the Under is 8-2 in the past 10 games, while the Under has connected in 5 of the past 6 road outings.

For VGK, the total has gone low in 5 of the past 6 games at home, but be careful. The Over is 3-1-1 in the past 6 games since Jan. 18, including the meeting in Dallas Friday.

  • Game Day Guide: Stars at Golden Knights

    First Shift

The Stars had a few issues to start this season.

With Joe Pavelski retiring and both Robertson and Johnston navigating injuries in training camp, Dallas got off to a slow start on the power play, hanging near the bottom of the league at 16 percent. The lads in Victory Green also were struggling on the road with a 6-8-0 mark away from home shortly after Thanksgiving.

It was a confusing time for a team that had the best road record in franchise history (26-10-5) the year before and ranked sixth in power play success at 24.2 percent.

But starting on December 23, things started to change – and now a lot of early problems seem to be in the rearview mirror. As the Stars roll into Vegas for a big showdown on Tuesday, they are 7-2-0 in their past nine road games. They also have pushed the power play success rate to 25.5 percent over the past month.

It’s a nice reminder of just what this team can be when everything is clicking.

“That’s what good teams do,” coach Pete DeBoer said when asked about addressing problems and finding solutions.

The Stars have proven they are a good team. They have made it to the Western Conference Final two years in a row. They finished with the best record in the West last season. They have adjusted not only the recovery time needed by Johnston and Robertson, but also to losing Tyler Seguin (hip surgery) and Mason Marchment (face surgery) midseason. And they are battling once again for a top spot in the West.

Dallas sits fourth in the Western Conference at 31-17-1 with 63 points (.643 points percentage). It beat Vegas (31-15-4, 66 points) at home last week, so it will get to test out its road legs on Tuesday.

DeBoer said the coaching staff is always trying to resolve issues, and the start to the year was a challenge. But the group effort between coaches and players has been a satisfying one so far.

“That’s what we do,” DeBoer said. “We come in every morning and look at areas that are in a good place, you want to keep them in a good place. And areas that aren’t, you have to improve. That’s daily. This won’t be the last time something creeps in and part of that is recognizing it before it gets too far down the road.”

Both Robertson and Johnston have learned quite a bit already. Pavelski played on a line with Robertson and served as the billet family for Johnston. So while both players were dealing with a lack of preparation because of physical limitations, they also had to find a way to step up with one of their leaders gone. In the past 17 games, Robertson has 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) and Johnston has 20 points (5 goals, 15 assists).

That’s a big reason for the power play success, and also a big reason Dallas is tops in the league in that span at 12-4-1.

“We knew that eventually we would break out of it,” Robertson said. “We talk about it, but you have to put the work in. There is confidence there. I think the new year helped. Everyone turned the page, and we have been better. I’m sure we’re going to have another tough moment, but we know we can recover from it.”

DeBoer said the mental aspect is real, and that individuals can help each other.

“Confidence is such a big part of the game, particularly in some of those areas,” DeBoer said. “Those are things we manage on a daily basis.”

And while urgency is a real part of the human condition, so is calm.

“I think patience is a big part of it…and knowing the group,” DeBoer said of how the coaches handle adversity. “It’s not my first year with the group, so I know what they’re capable of. I know the personnel. I think that allows you to have a little more patience.”

That said, there are a lot of new faces, and a lot of new issues. In recent games, rookie Lian Bichsel has been paired with veteran Dumba on defense, while veteran defenseman Brendan Smith has been moved to forward. All three are new additions to the roster.

That’s part of the new guys learning from the old guys.

“With key personnel out, the fact we haven’t lost three in a row, the fact we’ve been able to stop the bleeding…a big part of that is leadership,” DeBoer said.

Losing Pavelski hurts in that area too, but captain Benn has stepped up, and so have players like Esa Lindell, Heiskanen, Duchene and Hintz.

“What I’ve been really impressed with is our leadership,” DeBoer said. “What we’ve been through in the first three months, there’s been a lot of adversity with our road record and power play, those things could have easily gone off the rails if you don’t have great leadership to stay the course and keep messaging what the coaches are messaging.”

  • Former Golden Knights Goaltender Signs Extension With Capitals

Former Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson has signed a six-year, $5.85M AAV contract extension with the Washington Capitals, per Elliotte Friedman.

The 27-year-old is off to a phenomenal start to his Capitals tenure. His 22-2-3 record coinciding with his .925 SV% and 2.09 GAA has earned him this extension with the Capitals. He’s currently among the favourites to be nominated for the Vezina trophy and has played a major role in the Capitals’ success.

Despite his dominance this season, Thompson was shockingly left off of Team Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster. His former teammate Adin Hill is one of the three goaltenders on the team but Thompson has had the best season of all active Canadian goaltenders. He ranks third in wins, third in save percentage and second in goals against average among all goaltenders this season.

During his Golden Knights career, Thompson showed flashes that he could be a No. 1 goalie and in the offseason, Thompson spoke to the Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon about becoming the main guy in Vegas. McCrimmon told him that the role belonged to Hill and Thompson formally requested a trade.

The Golden Knights received the 83rd overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft, which was used on Belarusian goaltender Pavel Moysevich, and a third-round pick in 2025.

Thompson went undrafted but worked hard in the WHL with the Brandon Wheat Kings and for Brock University in the U-Sports league before earning a contract. He paid his dues in the ECHL and AHL and is now one of the highest paid goaltenders in the NHL.

Fleury, who was traded to the Capitals earlier this summer, has quickly become a fan favorite in Washington with his standout performances in net.

The 36-year-old goaltender has had an impressive career, winning three Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins and earning numerous accolades along the way. His veteran presence and proven track record of success make him a valuable asset to the Capitals as they look to make a deep playoff run in the upcoming season.

Fans of the Capitals are excited to see Fleury continue to guard the net for their team and are hopeful that his leadership and skill will help lead them to success in the coming years. With Fleury in goal, the Capitals are sure to be a formidable force in the NHL.

    Adin Hill (18-8-3, 2.61 GAA, .901 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Jake Oettinger (23-11-1, 2.26 GAA, .914 SV%, 1 SO)

Hill’s 18 victories is tied for seventh in the NHL, while his GAA and SV% each fall 17th or lower. He has lost back-to-back games and 3 of his last 4, but is 9-5 over his last 14 games. Golden Knights at Stars picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Stars 3, Golden Knights 2

    Moneyline

    BET STARS (-140).

Dallas plays its best hockey on its home ice with a 17-7-1 record in front of its fans. The Stars face a Golden Knights team that has lost 4 of its last 5 games, including 3 of its last 4 on the road. Vegas, which played Thursday in St. Louis, has allowed 3 or more goals in 4 of its last 5 games.

    Puck line/Against the spread

    PASS.

The spread is a better play for Dallas than laying a goal and a half at +180.

    Over/Under

    BET UNDER 6 (-120).

Dallas has hit the Under in 7 of its last 8 games and 8 of its last 10, including in back-to-back outings. The Under is 18-4-3 in the Stars’ last 25 games. They have allowed 3 or fewer goals in 14 of their last 16 games, while scoring 3 or fewer goals in 5 of its last 8.

The Over is only 3-6-1 Vegas’ last 10 games. The Golden Knights have allowed 3 or fewer goals in 14 of its last 18, while scoring 3 or fewer in 6 of its last 10.

When the 2 teams met in December in Vegas, the Golden Knights won 3-2 with the Under (6) cashing — VGK was a +125 underdog.

With Dallas featuring one of the NHL’s better goalies, and Vegas playing on back-to-back nights, UNDER 6 (-120) is the best bet.

The Vegas Golden Knights are set to take on the Dallas Stars in what promises to be an exciting matchup. Both teams have been playing well as of late, making this game a must-watch for hockey fans.

The odds for this game are close, with the Golden Knights being slight favorites at -120 and the Stars at +110. This means that the oddsmakers believe Vegas has a slight edge in this matchup.

When it comes to picks and predictions, it’s always tough to predict the outcome of a hockey game. However, the Golden Knights have been playing exceptionally well this season and have a strong roster that includes standout players like Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty. The Stars, on the other hand, have been dealing with injuries and inconsistencies.

In this matchup, I predict that the Golden Knights will come out on top and secure the win. They have been playing solid hockey and have the talent to outmatch the Stars. Look for Vegas to come out strong and take control of the game early on.

Overall, this game should be a close and competitive one, but I believe the Golden Knights will ultimately prevail. Keep an eye on this matchup as it unfolds, as it’s sure to be a thrilling game for hockey fans everywhere.

  • Game Day Guide: Stars vs Golden Knights

    First Shift

The Vegas Golden Knights are probably the Stars’ most intense rival right now.

Dallas lost in six games to Vegas in the 2023 Western Conference Final, and the Golden Knights went on to win the Stanley Cup. Last season, Dallas drew Vegas in the First Round and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Golden Knights in seven games. So, as the lads in Victory Green prepare for two games against Vegas sandwiched around one game at St. Louis over the next five days, it’s easy to think about the history of these two teams.

“They’re a really good rival, a really good team,” said Stars head coach Pete DeBoer, who used to coach the Golden Knights, along with assistant coaches Steve Spott and Misha Donskov. “There’s not a lot of separation between the two teams over the years. They got us the first time around, we got them last year. It’s great hockey when we get together with them.”

Dallas is 4-2-2 in the past eight regular-season games against Vegas, including a 3-0-0 sweep in 2022-23 and an 0-1-2 run last season. There’s also a chance the two teams could collide in the playoffs once again. Vegas sits second in the West at 29-14-4 (.660). Dallas is 29-17-1 (.628). Dallas is second in the West in goal differential at plus-32. Vegas is third at plus-28. Vegas is fourth overall in scoring at 3.38. Dallas is fourth in goals against at 2.49.

It has all the makings of a great matchup.

“We know them really well,” said center Hintz. “They don’t give much.”

Hintz returned from an upper body injury last game and played 19 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Carolina. His return allows DeBoer to shuffle his lines and try some new combinations on Friday. The Stars also called up defenseman Lian Bichsel, one of the team’s largest players at 6-7, 231. Bichsel, 20, has played eight NHL games this season and has two goals and 26 hits. He has 9 points (3 goals, 6 assists) in 28 AHL games, and said he feels he is learning a lot in his rookie year.

“It’s a good feeling,” he said of being called up. “When I was going back, I knew what I needed to work on and I think I did a good job in the three or four weeks I was down there. I had a lot of ice time and a good role with the team and now I’m happy to be back.”

DeBoer said the organization has been impressed with Bichsel, who was taken 18th overall in 2022.

“When you look at his path, he had a great camp. We sent him down, he handled that the right way, and when we brought him back, I thought he played really well and showed he can play here. When he went back down, I think we all talked and said this guy is really close, and the next opportunity we get, we want to have him experiencing this to see how quickly he can develop and maybe help us sooner than later.”

The fact Bichsel is playing against Vegas is part of the challenges of becoming a full-time NHL player.

“You’re jumping into the deep end of the pool when you come in and play a game like this, but that’s the test,” DeBoer said. “Let’s be honest, come playoff time, those are the types of teams you’re going to be getting starting in Round One.”

  • Golden Knights look to avenge loss against Blues in St. Louis – Las Vegas Sun News

After the Blues on Monday handed them their fourth straight loss, the Vegas Golden Knights will get a chance for revenge at 5 p.m. today in St. Louis.

Monday’s result was the closest the Golden Knights have come to victory in a week. They lost in a shootout, 5-4.

Vegas trailed late, but goals from Jack Eichel and Pavel Dorofeyev pushed the game into overtime. Eichel missed a tap-in, game-winning goal, pushing the puck just wide, and Mark Stone shot the puck over the net on a breakaway.

In the shootout, Eichel was the only player to score, as Victor Olofsson and Pavel Dorofeyev couldn’t find the back of the net.

Vegas had every chance to win in extra time, but they couldn’t get the puck to bounce their way or came up a play short.

Two positives that have come out of this losing stretch are Tomas Hertl and Dorofeyev.

Hertl has 10 points in his last six games, including a three-point performance in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 18.

Dorofeyev has nine points in his last five games, including his first career hat trick in a 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators on Jan. 14.

The injury bug is beginning to flare up again. Cole Schwindt will miss his second straight game due to a lower-body injury.

On Thursday, it was announced that William Karlsson is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said at Tuesday’s practice that he’s unsure if Brett Howden will travel with the team this week due to illness.

In response to injuries, the Golden Knights have called up Tanner Laczynski and Brendan Brisson from Henderson. This will be Brisson’s first NHL game since Oct. 30.

The Golden Knights are at risk again of falling out of first place in the Pacific Division.

The Edmonton Oilers, who are a point behind Vegas, play the Vancouver Canucks tonight. If the Golden Knights lose, the Oilers can take the divisional lead with a win.
