  • Cyclones rout Knights at Hilton

    9:23 pm CT January 21, 2025

    Game story from Cyclones’ victory

Eugene Rapay, the Register’s Iowa State beat reporter, provides instant analysis from the Big 12 victory at Hilton Coliseum. An assist to Register columnist Travis Hines for this link via X/Twitter:

    9:08 pm CT January 21, 2025

Final: Iowa State 108, UCF 83

Joshua Jefferson finished with 30. It had been a minute since a Cyclone reached that number (Caleb Grill in 2022, according to ESPN+).

Iowa State shot 56%, had a 43-29 rebounding edge, forced 16 steals and had an 18-5 advantage in fast-break points. And T.J. Otzelberger emptied the bench in the final two minutes.

Any way you slice it, a dominant performance by the Cyclones.

    8:55 pm CT January 21, 2025

Second half, 3:58 left: Iowa State leads 94-78

The Cyclones hit the road later this week for a two-game road trip in the Grand Canyon State. At Arizona State on Saturday, then at Arizona on Monday. A tough three-day stretch in a different time zone. Will be a good challenge for the Cyclones.

Let’s see if Joshua Jefferson can get 30 points in this game, eh? He’s at 26 with 3:58 left.

Keshon Gilbert also having a big night. 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting with eight assists.

Here’s a dunk from Nate Heise:

    8:43 pm CT January 21, 2025

Second half, 7:47 left: Iowa State leads 88-64

Jefferson up to 26 points now, Gilbert with 19, Jones with 13, and it’s a big party at Hilton Coliseum.

Jefferson has 15 in the second half.

Another great stat: Iowa State has a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint.

    8:33 pm CT January 21, 2025

Second half, 11:59 left: Iowa State leads 78-60

It’s the Joshua Jefferson Game. He has a career-high 23 points. Iowa State is shooting 58% from the field.

Something to keep an eye on − Des Moines Register Cyclones columnist Travis Hines sent this note to his subscriber text-messaging group:

“Tamin Lipsey has grabbed at that thumb in pain that he hurt at WVU probably 3-4 times tonight. It’s definitely something that’s bothering him.”

    8:25 pm CT January 21, 2025

Second half, 15:36 left: Iowa State 65, UCF 50

Not sure why we needed another media timeout here, but we got one anyway. Joshua Jefferson scored four points in a row to put the Cyclones’ lead back at 15.

Jefferson has 19 points to lead the team.

    8:20 pm CT January 21, 2025

Second half, 16:48 left: Iowa State 61, UCF 50

UCF made five field goals in a row, so T.J. Otzelberger called for a timeout. The Knights have outscored the Cyclones 14-7 so far this half. Iowa State needed a reset to get back to playing defense like it knows how.

UCF was 4-for-4 on 3-pointers in the first 3:12 of the second half.

    7:59 pm CT January 21, 2025

Halftime: Iowa State 54, UCF 36

The Cyclones scored 57 points on Saturday at West Virginia. They almost matched that total in 20 minutes tonight vs. UCF.

Iowa State is in complete control, and there’s no reason to think that’s going to change. The Knights don’t know what hit them in that first half in front of a raucous Hilton crowd.

Gilbert with 13 points to lead the team. Jefferson with 11 (including two pretty 3-pointers). Jones with 10 (and a team-high six rebounds). Watson with seven points and three rebounds in six minutes off the bench.

A really impressive half for Iowa State. Do you think that loss at West Virginia ruffled some feathers?

    7:48 pm CT January 21, 2025

First half, 3:37 left: Iowa State 44, UCF 32

Iowa State looks poised to take over this game, with Joshua Jefferson hitting a pair of free throws and then a 3-pointer to help the Cyclones take a 12-point lead.

Stat of the game so far: Iowa State has 23 rebounds, UCF has nine. Dominant effort on the glass by the Cyclones.

    7:37 pm CT January 21, 2025

First half, 7:28 left: Iowa State 28, UCF 26

Iowa State went on a 3-point shooting spree in that stretch. One by Demarion Watson, one by Keshon Gilbert and another by Curtis Jones.

The Cyclones suddenly led by seven before UCF scored the last five before the media timeout.

Iowa State 11 of 20 from the field. UCF is 9 of 21. (Eight turnovers now for ISU).

    7:26 pm CT January 21, 2025

First half, 12:00 left: UCF 18, Iowa State 15

Keyshawn Hall has six points for UCF, with Dallan Coleman close behind with five, and UCF has taken the lead with a 7-0 run.

Five turnovers now for the Cyclones. That has allowed the Knights to get their transition game going.

    7:11 pm CT January 21, 2025

First half, 15:47 left: Iowa State 9, UCF 6

Curtis Jones with four quick points as the teams settle into the game. Cyclones with two early turnovers. We just started.

  • (1-20-25) St. Louis Blues-Vegas Golden Knights Gameday Lineup

Jim Montgomery made it very clear prior to last Thursday’s 4-1 win against the Calgary Flames that just because a particular lineup wins a game, or even strings together consecutive wins, that doesn’t mean that particular lineup is set in stone for the next game.

He made changes after last Tuesday’s 2-1 win against the Flames because, “Our team is not at the level where we keep the same lineup,” Montgomery said. “Our lack of consistency when we have success is something that it’s just going to be based on if guys are doing the right things out there and giving us a good opportunity at success. You play well, you’re going to play, win or lose.”

Well, following a 4-2 loss against the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday, a chance to win a third straight game this season for the eighth time but the Blues fell to 0-7-1 in those situations, there will be more changes today when the Blues (22-21-4) take on the Vegas Golden Knights (29-14-3) on the front end of a home-and-home at 5 p.m. today (FDSNMW, ESPN 101.1-FM) at T-Mobile Arena.

Brandon Saad, a healthy scratch the past two games and five games this season, will replace Zack Bolduc, who played just 7:04 on Saturday but took a tripping penalty 200 feet from his own goal that led to Utah’s tying goal in the first period, and among the switches is Pavel Buchnevich, who does have 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists) in 45 games this season, moving down the lineup. He has no points the past four games and when it looks like the defensive side of the puck isn’t there as well, something that has been a staple of his as a two-way forward, well it gets one’s attention, and it’s received the attention of the coaching staff.

As for the changes, Montgomery told reporters, “Trying to get a workman-like attitude on every line. Mixing it up sometimes creates a spark of, ‘I individually have to do more, I’m not going to rely on the guy next to me.’ That’s all.”

    What to Know

UCF will be in front of their home fans on Saturday, but a look at the spread shows they might need that home-court advantage. They and the Houston Cougars will face off in a Big 12 battle at 12:00 p.m. ET at Addition Financial Arena. The Knights have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they’ve increased their point totals each of their last three games.

UCF’s offense and defense might be a bit winded after their high-scoring matchup with Arizona State on Tuesday. UCF came out on top against Arizona State by a score of 95-89.

Keyshawn Hall was a one-man wrecking crew for UCF as he went 13 for 18 en route to 40 points plus seven rebounds and six assists. The dominant performance also gave Hall a new career-high in field goal percentage (72.2%). Another player making a difference was Darius Johnson, who earned 17 points in addition to seven assists and two steals.

UCF was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. The team’s really been improving in that area: they’ve now improved their assist total in four consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Houston had already won eight in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 25.8 points) and they went ahead and made it nine on Wednesday. They strolled past the Mountaineers with points to spare, taking the game 70-54.

Houston’s victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was J’Wan Roberts, who went 10 for 13 en route to 22 points. The team also got some help courtesy of L.J. Cryer, who earned 18 points.

UCF is on a roll lately: they’ve won eight of their last ten games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season. As for Houston, their win was their 27th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-3.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. UCF hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 79.6 points per game. However, it’s not like Houston struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 76.6. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

UCF came up short against Houston in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, falling 67-59. Can UCF avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

Houston is a big 13.5-point favorite against UCF, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The line has drifted a bit towards the Cougars, as the game opened with the Cougars as a 11.5-point favorite.

Join Daily Faceoff’s Andy MacNeil as he handicaps Friday’s matchup between the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes.

    Golden Knights vs. Hurricanes Odds

    • Vegas Golden Knights Moneyline: +135
    • Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline: -160
    • Puck Line: Golden Knights +1.5 (-190), Hurricanes -1.5 (+155)
    • Game Total: 6 (Over +100, Under -120)

    Game odds via Sports Interaction.

Handicapping the Golden Knights (29-15 SU, 27-17 ATS, 21-22-1 O/U)

Vegas opened its three-game road trip with a 5-3 loss to Nashville. After a two-day break, the Golden Knights aim to bounce back in Carolina. This marks the final meeting of the season, with Carolina winning the first matchup 5-3 on Nov. 11. Vegas is 5-5-3 against the Hurricanes all-time, but just 3-7 straight-up against Carolina in the past 10 meetings.

The road wasn’t kind to the Golden Knights earlier in the season. Vegas started out with five losses in its first six games away from home, but the club has improved a lot over the course of the season. Since Nov. 6, the Golden Knights are 11-3-2 on the road. That said, Vegas has only won three of the seven road games in which it was listed as the underdog.

However, based on current form, the Golden Knights have looked stronger than Carolina over the past month. Not only does Vegas grade out much better than the Hurricanes offensively, ranking eighth in goals per 60 minutes, but only four teams have allowed fewer goals than the Golden Knights over this stretch. Additionally, the Golden Knights are the only team that has a better shot share than Carolina over the last four weeks and they rank second in expected goals percentage.

Jack Eichel missed one game due to illness, but he played in Nashville and Ivan Barbashev is also back in the lineup for Vegas after missing almost a month’s worth of action. Barbashev hasn’t scored or registered a point in three games since returning, but he’s scored on 16.4 percent of his shots since joining the Golden Knights in 2022-23.

Friday’s game marks the first half of a back-to-back for the Golden Knights, but with the lowly Chicago Blackhawks on deck for Saturday, expect Vegas to empty the tank in Carolina on Friday.

    Handicapping the Hurricanes (26-19 SU, 22-23 ATS, 18-23-4 O/U)

The Hurricanes‘ recent results don’t resemble the Stanley Cup contenders they appeared to be earlier this season when they started 16-5-1. Since Nov. 29, they’ve gone 10-11-2 and risk losing three straight games for the second time during this stretch, following defeats to Anaheim and Buffalo.

Scoring has been their biggest issue, compounded by bad puck luck. From the season’s start to Nov. 28, only one team scored more goals per 60 minutes than Carolina. Over the next 23 games, however, the Hurricanes rank 24th in goals per 60. Despite this, they remain fifth in shots and sixth in expected goals, per Evolving Hockey, showing their underlying process is still solid.

Defensively, Carolina continues to suppress shots better than any other team. However, unlike earlier in the season, the Hurricanes’ goaltending has been average overall. While performance has been in line with expected goals, Pyotr Kochetkov can’t carry the load alone, but luckily, Frederik Andersen has been activated from injured reserve following his recovery from knee surgery in November. Kochetkov is still expected to start on Friday, though.

From a betting perspective, Carolina has been a solid home favorite, but the margins are thin because the betting market thinks so highly of the Hurricanes. Despite winning 17 of 23 games as home favorites this season, if a bettor had wagered one unit on the Hurricanes to win all of those games, they’d only be up 2.75 units year-to-date.

Best bet for Golden Knights vs. Hurricanes

    • Vegas Golden Knights Moneyline (+135)

The Knights might not have been an appealing pick earlier when sportsbooks opened with them as +120 underdogs, but the betting market seems overly confident in Carolina today. Alternatively, the early action on the Hurricanes may have been based on the assumption that Andersen would be in net. As a result, the Golden Knights’ odds have shifted to +135, creating a solid opportunity to back them at longer odds. Vegas is 2-1 this season in road games where its moneyline odds are +135 or longer.

The highly anticipated matchup between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes is set to take place, and sportsbooks are buzzing with excitement over the odds for this game. Both teams are coming off strong performances, with the Golden Knights boasting a potent offense led by top scorers like Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone, while the Hurricanes have been dominant on defense with standout players like Dougie Hamilton and Sebastian Aho.

The odds for this game are expected to be close, with both teams having a solid chance of coming out on top. As of now, the Golden Knights are slight favorites with odds of -130, while the Hurricanes are underdogs with odds of +110. This means that a $130 bet on the Golden Knights would net a $100 profit, while a $100 bet on the Hurricanes would result in a $110 profit.

It’s sure to be an exciting game filled with fast-paced action and top-tier talent on both sides. Be sure to tune in and see which team comes out victorious in this thrilling matchup between two of the NHL’s elite teams.

    PK: 16th, 80.2% (Sabres: 21st, 77.9%)

    What to watch

    1. The Empire Strikes First, Strikes Hard, No Mercy Sir!

Here we go with the team that everyone loves to hate, the Vegas Golden Knights. Even more so for Sabres fans for obvious reasons. So why so much disdain for the league’s 2nd youngest hockey club? Well, we will start with the expansion draft, which gifted the team better quality players over expansion teams of the past. Then there is that run to the Stanley Cup finals in their first season. Oh, and seven straight winning seasons since they entered the NHL. (And they are well on their way to making it eight this year) They have made the playoffs every year but one since they entered the league. The Knights are also located in the most non traditional hockey market in the USA, with fans who earned nothing to be gifted such a team. And like some big Vegas high roller, the team buys the best players they can get their hands on. The allure of Sin City and a culture of winning gives Vegas a huge advantage when attracting great players. They don’t develop much from within, rather they trade out the young talent and picks for the biggest fish out there. Top it off with a second appearance in the Finals and a Stanley Cup Championship and there you have it. Vegas has had more success in the NHL in their brief history than half the teams in the league.

    2. Hey Jealousy

So is most of that accurate? Yes, I believe so. But my view is also skewered through the eyes of being a lifetime Buffalo Sabres fan. Plus the whole saga of He Who Shall Not Be Named. We see the immense success of a brand new team while we wallow through this epic playoff drought. Much of that success with a player who was supposed to be our savior. Plus 55 years without a Stanley Cup for loyal, hockey crazed fans who deserve better. It just doesn’t seem fair. Meanwhile, Vegas comes in and runs their team like a shrewd business, all business. They have made smart signings and smart acquisitions. They have sound ownership and strong coaching. Did they get an early advantage? Yes, for sure. Is it easier to sell your team and your glamour town to available players being in Vegas? You bet. But the team has done remarkably well for themselves beyond those advantages. They are earning their rewards. Trading away most of their picks and prospects would catch up to most teams. But I’m betting Vegas can probably buy their way out of it and continue a strong level of winning.

The Golden Knights are once again first in the Pacific Division and closing the gap with Winnipeg for best team in the Conference. They are tied for second in the league in goals for and sport an impressive home record of 16-4-0. They also have a balanced defensive corp and solid goaltending. Sooooo what I’m saying is, the Sabres will have their hands full. Thankfully, even through all the losses, Buffalo has kept the final scores mostly close.

    3. How Will Buffalo Respond?

The psyche of the Sabres has got to be bad right now. The epic failure in Colorado was a killer. Two monumental collapses to the Avalanche, a 13 game losing streak, and a seeming inability to learn from their mistakes. They play soft and fragile and that will not change for the most part without changes to the lineup. This is once again the hand we were dealt by the team. It appears we will suffer through it for the rest of the season. Hopefully, somewhere in the mess is a few bright spots to shine the way for next year and beyond. We need a few of these players to flip a switch, to finally GET IT and lead the way for others.

Players to watch for Buffalo tonight are Tage Thompson, with 8 points in his last 5 games. Rasmus Dahlin has 8 assists in his last 5 games and Jason Zucker has tallied 6 goals in his last 5. This is the last game of the road trip before the Sabres return home to face Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

The Buffalo Sabres are set to take on the Vegas Golden Knights in what is sure to be an exciting matchup. The Sabres have been struggling as of late, but they will look to turn things around against a tough Golden Knights team.

The Golden Knights, on the other hand, have been playing well and currently sit near the top of the standings in the Western Conference. They will be looking to continue their winning ways and secure another important victory.

Both teams have plenty of talent and firepower, so this game is sure to be a close one. Make sure to tune in and join the discussion in the comments below as we cheer on our favorite team to victory! Let’s go Sabres! #SabresvsGoldenKnights #NHL #HockeyFans

  • Sabres at Golden Knights | How to watch, lineup notes, and storylines

Sabres at Golden Knights | How to watch, lineup notes, and storylines

    Storylines

    1. Power-play progress

The Sabres have now converted on four of their last six power plays since Sunday and six of their last 13 (46.2%) since Dec. 21. For context, they’d converted at 5.4 percent (2-for-37) in 14 games leading up to that Boston loss.

Jason Zucker, tied for the NHL lead with four power-play goals since that date, appears to have found a home as the first unit’s net-front presence. The rest of that top group includes Tage Thompson in the bumper, Jack Quinn and JJ Peterka on the flanks and Rasmus Dahlin at the point.

Thursday at Colorado, both Quinn and Thompson fed Zucker for net-front power-play goals.

“The guys made great plays for me,” Zucker said. “I’m just trying to stay around the net. I try to be around there as much as I can and try to draw a defenseman to me, make them make decisions. I thought Tommer made two, Quinny made one that were just unbelievable passes.”

Read Friday’s practice report for more on Zucker’s net-front scoring, an area where he ranks among the NHL’s best.

Quinn, too, has become a key cog in the top unit after watching several December games from the press box. He’s tallied four power-play assists – along with two goals and one helper at even strength – in the last five games.

“I thought last night the power play was fantastic,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said at Friday’s practice. “They made some great plays, they had some great recoveries, they solved the pressure. I think if we can continue with that look, it can be a dangerous weapon for us.”

Movement within the offensive zone is essential to any power play, as the Sabres have learned through tough stretches this season. A less stationary approach has served them well the last couple weeks.

“I think motion causes confusion,” Thompson said. “We’ve got a lot of guys that have a lot of skill out there that can fill different spots. It’s been working recently for us, so we’ve got to keep doing that.”

Buffalo’s man advantage will be tested by the Golden Knights, who’ve killed off 12 of 13 shorthanded situations in their last five games.

    2. Thompson on the wing

Ruff made a number of changes to his lines prior to Thursday’s game, none more notable than on the first line. Dylan Cozens elevated to No. 1 center while Thompson shifted to right wing. Alex Tuch, meanwhile, skated with Jiri Kulich and Jack Quinn on the second line.

“We got [Thompson] on the wing and the thinking was maybe to try to free him up to skate a little bit more, where he’s not working down low,” Ruff said. “I really thought that line skated well.”

Freed from some of the center position’s 200-foot obligations, Thompson tied a career high with three assists. He also logged his most time on ice (19:43) and shots on goal (4) since Dec. 11 against the Rangers.

“Always trying to find ways to get shots off,” Thompson said. “Last night was one of those nights where I felt like I was getting some good looks and some time and space with the puck.”

    3. Scouting the Golden Knights

Vegas has gone 11-2-0 since the beginning of December, allowing 1.92 goals per game during that span (best in NHL) while scoring 3.46 (5th in NHL).

Jack Eichel leads the team and is tied for eighth in the NHL with 50 points (10+40). Forward Mark Stone, who missed a month a lower-body injury, ranks second on Vegas with 32 points (9+23) in just 24 games. Shea Theodore’s 31 points (4+27) place him fifth among NHL defensemen.

Forward Victor Olofsson will face the Sabres for the first time after playing his first six seasons in Buffalo. The 2014 seventh-round pick has eight goals and five assists in 18 games with Vegas, and he’s been a mainstay in the lineup since returning Nov. 30 from a lower-body injury.

Adin Hill figures to start in net Saturday after sitting Thursday versus Philadelphia. The 6-foot-6 netminder has gone 16-6-2 with a .902 save percentage and 2.65 goals-against average, and in his first year as a starting goalie, he’s on pace to blow past last season’s career-high 35 games played.

The Sabres have beaten Vegas three straight times and in four of their last five matchups dating back to March of 2022. Last season, Buffalo outscored the Golden Knights 12-4 between the two wins.

The Buffalo Sabres are set to take on the Vegas Golden Knights in an exciting matchup tonight. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch, lineup notes, and the key storylines for the game:

    How to Watch:
    – Date: Thursday, November 11
    – Time: 10:00 PM ET
    – TV: ESPN+
    – Live Stream: WatchESPN

    Lineup Notes:
    – The Sabres will be without defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, who is out with an upper-body injury.
    – Goalie Craig Anderson is expected to start for Buffalo, while Robin Lehner will be in net for Vegas.

    Key Storylines:
    1. Jack Eichel’s Return: Former Sabres captain Jack Eichel will face his old team for the first time since being traded to the Golden Knights. Eichel has been a key player for Vegas since joining the team, and all eyes will be on him in this highly anticipated matchup.

    2. Vegas’ Hot Streak: The Golden Knights are currently on a six-game winning streak and are looking to extend that streak against the struggling Sabres. Vegas has been getting contributions from all over their lineup, and they will look to continue their winning ways in this game.

    3. Buffalo’s Struggles: The Sabres have been struggling as of late, with just one win in their last five games. They will need to find a way to turn things around against a tough Vegas team if they want to get back on track.
