#Knockout #playoffs #draw #UEFA #Champions #LeagueRoma Hosts Eintracht Frankfurt With Place in Europa League Knockout Round on the Line
There’s no question that the season has been a disappointment for the Giallorossi. Champions League football via the league route appears to be out of reach, and even a return to Europa League football looks to be a tall task, with Roma currently sitting in ninth place through 22 match weeks. It’s not impossible, but it will take plenty of positive results to leapfrog enough teams to secure European football for next season.
However, as bad as this season has been and as disappointing as the final league place has been for Roma over the last few seasons, there has been a silver lining. The Giallorossi have made four consecutive European semifinals, including the 2022 Conference League title and a trip to the 2023 Europa League finale. And now, the Europa League again gives the Giallorossi the chance to redeem an otherwise disappointing season. However, a loss to Frankfurt could result in Roma being eliminated in the group stage of a European competition for the first time since the 2014/15 Champions League—something that has never occurred for the club in this competition.
The task won’t be easy as a strong Eintracht Frankfurt team arrives at the Stadio Olimpico. Historically, German teams haven’t been kind to the Giallorossi, who have won just three of their last 14 matches against Bundesliga sides (D5, L6). However, home advantage has been crucial for Roma, with the Giallorossi winning 33 of their last 45 European home matches (D9, L3)—keeping a clean sheet in 24 of those games. Something has to give in this situation, so let’s examine some key points for the match.
What To Watch For
Will the Roma Continue Its Steady Improvement?
Photo by Luciano Rossi/AS Roma via Getty Images
After an atrocious start to the season and the firings of two managers, Claudio Ranieri was brought back to the Italian capital to steady a sinking ship. The first few weeks saw Ranieri deal with rough results, including a draw against Tottenham between losses to Serie A powers Napoli and Atalanta. However, Roma has since racked up seven wins, two draws, and just two losses in all competitions.
It’s a stretch that has seen Roma fight for every point, often salvaging results from behind, as we saw against Udinese on Sunday. The Giallorossi will be eager to bounce back from one of the few blemishes in that stretch—a 1-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar last Thursday in the penultimate Europa League match. That defeat put Roma in its current win-or-go-home predicament.
The Giallorossi must be at their best to take all three points from an Eintracht Frankfurt side that sits second in the Europa League and third in the Bundesliga tables. And results against those top sides have been difficult for Roma this season—something that Claudio Ranieri was asked about at the pre-match press conference.
“There’s always room for improvement. When you’re facing big teams, in terms of your approach, how you play in the final third, and how you play in the middle of the pitch, you have to do really well to contain them and cause them problems. The lads are improving. Cast your minds back to when I started out here and I was surprised when we didn’t play as I hoped in Naples. We’ve managed to do that from the Atalanta game onwards – we’re on the up. Every day I see that the team working to improve. As a coach, this is the best thing to witness.”
Now, it’ll be up to the players to follow up on Ranieri’s words and show that they’ve taken the next step in their overall improvement. It’ll be crucial for Frankfurt to be followed in the league by Napoli and Milan.
How Will the Giallorossi Line Up?
Photo by Fabio Rossi/AS Roma via Getty Images
On Sunday against Udinese, Claudio Ranieri elected to rest key players Leandro Paredes, Alexis Saelemaekers, Mats Hummels, and Paulo Dybala. Only Dybala played a small role off the bench. That move was made with an eye on this fixture, given its importance, with the Giallorossi yet to secure a place in the knockout rounds—something Ranieri tried to downplay.
“Every game is important, as it’s a chance for the team to improve. When I came into the club everyone was worried about what might happen to Roma. Now we’ve just got to do well in every game, and we’ll see where that gets us.”
All four players are expected to return to the starting lineup for this pivotal match against Frankfurt. It seems that even with Bryan Cristante fit again, Ranieri will stick with the Paredes-Koné duo that has become a staple during Cristante’s absence—something that Ranieri acknowledged.
“All of the rumours I hear about Leandro emanate from you journalists – I haven’t heard them from him. As for Hermoso, if he doesn’t want to stay then I won’t keep him or anyone else who’d rather leave. Cristante has found his feet again. He’s got different characteristics, but he could play that role. He doesn’t possess the directness that Paredes has, but he’s got other qualities. They could play together and complement each other – I’d be happy with that. I knew that in Udine I was sacrificing quality, but it’s something I absolutely had to do. I was convinced by my choices and that those players would put in good performances.”
With the midfield more or less confirmed, we should see a repeated of Ranieri’s preferred starting lineup from the past several weeks.
ROMA (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Mancini, Hummels, Ndicka; Saelemaekers, Paredes, Koné, Angeliño; Dybala, Pellegrini; Dovbyk.
AS Roma will face off against Eintracht Frankfurt in a crucial Europa League match with a spot in the knockout round on the line. The Italian side will host the German club at the Stadio Olimpico in what promises to be an exciting and intense battle between two top European teams.Roma currently sits in second place in Group E, just one point behind leaders Eintracht Frankfurt. A win for Roma would see them leapfrog their opponents and secure a spot in the next round of the competition, while a loss could see them facing an early exit.
Both teams have been in solid form in their respective leagues and will be looking to carry that momentum into this crucial Europa League clash. Roma will be counting on their star players such as Tammy Abraham and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to deliver the goods, while Eintracht Frankfurt will be relying on the likes of Filip Kostic and Daichi Kamada to lead them to victory.
With so much at stake, this match is sure to be a thrilling encounter with both teams giving it their all to secure a place in the knockout round. Fans can expect a high-intensity game filled with drama and excitement as these two European giants battle it out for supremacy. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as Roma hosts Eintracht Frankfurt with a place in the Europa League knockout round on the line.

Myles Lewis-Skelly can look forward to a potential knockout match in the Champions League – Getty Images/Stuart MacFarlane Manchester City face a blockbuster Champions League play-off tie against Real Madrid or Bayern Munich after scraping through the new league phase with a 3-1 victory over Club Brugge.
The Premier League champions, enduring their most turbulent season in Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering reign, again underwhelmed but recovered from a 1-0 deficit at half-time against the Belgian underdogs.
The comeback sparked a dramatic outpouring of emotion from Guardiola, who twice booted a pitchside coolbox in apparent relief after being left immensely frustrated by a nervous and lacklustre first half.
Elsewhere, the night proved significantly less stressful for other English sides as Arsenal and Aston Villa joined Liverpool in securing last-16 spots for finishing in the league phase’s top eight.
The Etihad Stadium suffered a huge scare as City, knowing only victory would suffice to avoid the abject embarrassment of slipping out of the top 24 places in the tournament’s new format, were forced to battle back from Raphael Onyedika shock opener just before half-time.
Guardiola’s men rallied in the second half, however, with Mateo Kovacic driving low past Simon Mignolet. Joel Ordóñez then turned Josko Gvardiol’s cross into his own net before the substitute Savinho scored with a low shot.
It was a goal-laden night elsewhere in the deciding matchday eight, with Aston Villa overwhelming Celtic 4-2 and Arsenal winning 2-1 away at Girona. An understrength Liverpool, their place already safe, slipped to a 3-2 defeat at PSV Eindhoven.
Arsenal will face AC Milan, PSV, Feyenoord or Juventus in the last 16. Liverpool also face one of four potential opponents in the next round, with Paris St-Germain the standout potential opponent while Borussia Dortmund are among four potential opponents for Villa.
Celtic, like City, are also waiting to find out if they face Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.
The new league phase of the Champions League had divided fans until Wednesday night, but Uefa have now declared the changes over the summer an unmitigated success.
Here is how the next stages unfold.
When is the Champions League knockout draw?
The draw for the knockout phase play-off round takes place in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday, January 31. It will start at 11am UK time (12pm European time) and will be live-streamed on Uefa.com.
How does the play-off round work?
Teams that finished the new Swiss-format league phase between ninth and 16th are seeded for the first draw for the knockout phase and will face a team placed 17th to 24th. The seeded team will, in principle, play the return leg at home. Potential opponents are also pre-defined by pairings of teams’ final league positions. For example, teams finishing ninth and 10th will face the sides that ended 23rd or 24th; teams finishing 11th or 12th will be drawn against either the 21st or 22nd-placed sides and so on.
Who will Manchester City and Celtic face?
Celtic’s 21st place finish, with City immediately beneath them means they will face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, who finished 11th and 12th respectively. The draw starts with the unseeded teams, in this case City and Celtic, who will play at home first.
Who can Liverpool face?
Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa finished in the top eight so progress directly into the last 16. The Merseyside club’s top spot and top seed status hands them a tie against either PSG, Benfica, Monaco or Brest, who need to come through the play-off stage first. Liverpool will also play their second leg of the round of 16 tie at home.
Who can Arsenal face?
Arsenal’s third place finish means they face either AC Milan, PSV, Feyenoord or Juventus.
Who can Aston Villa face?
Villa’s eight-place slot hands them either Atalanta, Dortmund, Sporting or Club Brugge.
What happens to the teams who are knocked out?
There will be no buffer of the Europa League like years gone by. Those teams who finished 25th or below have been eliminated and, to use that old football adage, can concentrate on their respective domestic leagues. The Europa League and Europa Conference are also using the Swiss Model format.
When is the play-off round?
First legs will be played on February 11 and 12, with the return leg the following week on February 18 and 19.
The rest of the tournament follows as . . .
Round of 16: March 4/5 and 11/12
Quarter-finals: April 8/9 and 15/16
Semi-finals: April 29/30 and May 6/7
Final: May 31

The Champions League group stages are over and we’ve got a much better idea of who will play who in the knockout stages. Who will the English sides and Celtic face?
Pep Guardiola faces a potential return to Bayern Munich in the play-offs after his Manchester City side beat Club Brugge to continue their Champions League campaign.
But City will face a tough test to reach the last 16 with City and Celtic facing either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid for a chance to play Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen after that in the last 16.
Aston Villa snuck into the top eight by the skin of their teeth after Atalanta failed to beat Barcelona and dropped into the play-offs, meaning Unai Emery’s side will face one of Atalanta, Borussia Dortmund, Sporting or Club Brugge in the last 16.
Arsenal and Liverpool already knew their automatic progression was secured.
Liverpool top the overall table and will now face one of Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Monaco or Brest.
Arsenal could face one of two Serie A giants with AC Milan, PSV, Feyenoord or Juventus their possible last-16 opponents.
Who will British teams play in the next round – and who could they face in the last 16?

Manchester City (Ranked No 22)
Knockout playoffs: vs Bayern Munich (11th) or Real Madrid (12th).

Why there could be two all-British quarter-finals…
We won’t know the exact format of the tournament beyond the play-offs until February, when the last-16 draw is held.
But, there is a chance there could be two all-British quarter-finals.
After finishing first and eighth, should Liverpool and Aston Villa win their last-16 games they may well end up facing one another in the last eight.
Likewise one of Celtic and Manchester City will set up a potential quarter-final with Arsenal if they win their play-offs and then beat Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen.
Who are all the teams through to the next round?

The draw for the knockout playoff round of the new-look UEFA Europa League is upon us.
But who is taking part in this draw? Why are the league phase positions so important? And when is the next draw?
Here’s how it’s going to work.
When is the draw for the knockout playoff round?
The draw for the knockout playoff round will take place on Friday at 7 a.m. ET / midday U.K. at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.
Which clubs are in Friday’s draw?
Only the 16 teams that finish in positions 9 to 24 will have an interest.
The clubs who finish in the top eight go directly through to the round of 16.
Clubs finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated.
Does it matter where you finish in the table?
Yes, because the league placings create the knockout bracket. Unlike in previous seasons, where there would be open draws, paths will be set after this phase has been completed.
The new “seeding” system means the highest-placed teams can’t face each other until the latter stages of the knockout round.
For instance, if we look at the table right now, Lazio and Eintracht Frankfurt are in first and second, and they would not be able to play each other until the final. The teams in third and fourth — currently Athletic Club and Manchester United — can’t play Lazio and Eintracht Frankfurt until the semifinals.
Finishing seventh or eighth could be seen as creating a more difficult path than being 11th or 12th, as it would mean facing first or second in the quarterfinals. Teams in 11th and 12th avoid this until the semifinals, but do have to play an extra round.
How does the knockout draw work?
In the knockout playoff round draw, teams are paired by their final position, in order (e.g. 9 and 10, 11 and 12, etc).
Of each pair, teams will be drawn into opposite halves of the bracket. For instance, 15th (Union St.-Gilloise), 16th (Ajax) will split off and cannot play each other until the final (which is the case for all pairs).
Before the draw, paired teams will have two possible opponents. If we take Union St.-Gilloise and Ajax again, they will be drawn to play either 17th (PAOK) or 18th (Real Sociedad).
The eight unseeded teams are drawn first into a position in the bracket. This starts with 23rd and 24th, and moves down to 17th and 18th. In each case the first team drawn goes into the first half of the bracket (let’s say PAOK), meaning the other club in the pair (which would be Real Sociedad) goes into the second half.
The draw then moves on to the seeded teams, continuing with 15th and 16th down to ninth and 10th. Again, the first team drawn goes into the first half of the bracket (so if that’s Ajax, they’d be playing PAOK) — which automatically creates a knockout playoff round fixture — and so on with the other paired team into the second half (which makes Union St.-Gilloise vs. Real Sociedad).
The seeded clubs will play the second leg at home.
So there’s no country protection?
Correct. Clubs from the same country can play each other from the knockout playoff round onward.
It’s also possible to draw one of the eight teams you’ve already faced — including the most recent opponents from Matchday 8.
What dates are the knockout playoff round?
First legs: Feb. 13
Second legs: Feb. 20So what about the top eight clubs?
After the knockout playoff round draw, the teams who finish inside the top eight will still have four possible opponents.
For instance, third (Athletic Club) and sixth (Man United) would still be able to play any of 13th, 14th, 19th or 20th (Rangers, AZ Alkmaar, Midtjylland, Elfsborg). This is because Athletic and Man United could yet be drawn into either half, but only into the specific paths for those fixtures.
Once the knockout playoff round is complete, and two of those clubs have been knocked out, Athletic and Man United would have two possible opponents remaining: the winners of the knockout playoff round ties.
When is the draw for the round of 16?
The round of 16 draw then takes place on Friday, Feb. 21, when Athletic and Man United would simply be drawn into opposite halves of the bracket — which would create a fixture against one of the winners of the ties involving Rangers, AZ Alkmaar, Midtjylland, Elfsborg.
The teams placed first to eighth are seeded and will be at home in the second leg.
First legs: March 6
Second legs: March 13The knockout bracket is now set through to the final.
Who gets home advantage in the quarterfinals and semifinals?
There will be one more draw, straight after the round of 16 is set, to determine the home teams in the second leg for the quarterfinals and semifinals. This is not done on league phase seeding.
The Europa League knockout draw is set to take place on Friday, December 14th at 12:00 PM CET. The draw will determine the matchups for the Round of 32, with the first legs scheduled to be played on February 14th and the second legs on February 21st.The format of the draw will see the 24 group winners from the Europa League group stage, along with the 8 third-placed teams from the Champions League group stage, drawn against each other. Teams from the same country or group cannot be drawn against each other in the Round of 32.
The knockout stage will be played in a two-legged format, with away goals and extra time used to determine the winners if the aggregate score is tied after the second leg. The winners of the Round of 32 will advance to the Round of 16, which will be drawn after the Round of 32 matches have been completed.
Stay tuned for the Europa League knockout draw to see which teams will face off in the next stage of the competition!

#Europa #League #knockout #draw #Date #time #format #bracketIf I Had Legs I’d Kick You review – Rose Byrne is a knockout in anxious dark comedy | Sundance 2025
Last year’s toothless adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s Nightbitch, premiering then disappearing during fall festivals, tried to bring attention to the specific hell of motherhood. But valid points were clumsily underlined, highlighted and circled by a heavy hand, a missed opportunity that’s now been pushed even further in the shade by Mary Bronstein’s superior Sundance offering, the suitably aggressive-sounding If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
It’s a far darker film (A24 vs Disney) but it focuses on a similarly fatigued mother, exhausted not just by the act of childcare but by the total lack of awareness and assistance afforded by those in her life. She’s played here by Rose Byrne, someone who has long deserved something more substantial to sink her teeth into, a gifted comic actor who has found herself a little lost in thankless franchises and little-watched Apple shows. She’s come upon an unlikely saviour in writer-director Bronstein, whose debut mumblecore comedy Yeast was released back in 2008 and who has now returned with a film that shares a similar anxious energy, yet for an older, more superficially mature crowd.
While Byrne’s Linda is a wife, mother and therapist, she often wishes she could just smoke weed and drink wine alone instead. The more we see of her life, it’s not hard to understand why. Her husband (Christian Slater) is never at home, on long work trips but in regular, grating contact, judgmentally yammering down the phone at a deafening volume. Her job involves speaking to patients she struggles to help while her actual therapist and colleague (Conan O’Brien) is losing patience with her. Then her daughter, shown off-screen yet heard via an almost constant whine, is suffering from a mystery illness that involves a refusal to eat. Then there’s that giant hole in her apartment, forcing her to move to a grotty motel cursed with a vile receptionist (Ivy Wolk) and blessed with a friendly stoner (a charismatic A$AP Rocky).
From the opening scenes, focused tightly on Byrne’s harangued face, Bronstein aims to keep us rattled and on the edge along with Linda. Produced by Josh Safdie and Bronstein’s husband and Safdie collaborator Ronald Bronstein, it carries that same sense of constant anxiety, something that can be effectively suffocating yet at times overly exhausting. Unlike Nightbitch, which softly tapped at the idea that having a child itself is an unending nightmare before essentially wrapping things up with a group hug, here Bronstein pushes far harder, framing motherhood as a frequently joyless and, for some, entirely ill-fitting life choice. One of Linda’s patients (Danielle Macdonald) talks of the all-consuming need to protect her baby yet also of the nothingness she sees when she looks at him, a blank, needy creature that demands so much but gives little in return. The total, maddening headache of Linda’s daughter – needy, nagging, impossible to please – is never offset by any real warmth, just the inescapable sense of failure. Bronstein’s script can be a little too vague and withholding at times but she gives Byrne a standout scene with her and O’Brien, as she confesses a truth most parents would be too scared to ever admit.
It’s a deliberately unpleasant endurance test of a movie (in her intro at Sundance, Bronstein called it “experiential”), a downward spiral that plays with flashes of surrealism, often dipping into moments of full horror, parts of which work more than others. It’s at times reminiscent of one of A24’s Sundance offerings from last year, the feverishly uncomfortable A Different Man, but it doesn’t possess the same off-putting and rather juvenile mean-spiritedness. Linda is a tough protagonist whose decisions can frustrate but the film keeps you on side, desperate for her to sleep the night through or just have someone offer to help. It might focus on the increased stress that being a mother brings but there’s a relatable plea for many who’ve felt alone and unsure, as Linda begs her therapist to please just tell her what to do. How do I fix this? What do I do with that? When will it get better?
What truly keeps us on side, though, is an absolutely sensational Byrne, forced headfirst through the wringer in the type of thrilling, all-in showcase she just hasn’t been given up until now. She reaches the upper levels of frustration and anger without falling back on easy histrionics, a whirlwind of nerves and sadness eager for someone to understand. It could lead to something of a career pivot, the kind of awards-worthy work that should inspire other risk-taking directors to work with her next.
In just under two hours with a plate filled a little too high, not everything here quite works as well as Byrne, but Bronstein clearly hasn’t made something to be liked, she’s made something to be experienced. I can’t say I’ll forget that experience easily.
This past weekend at Sundance, I had the pleasure of catching a screening of the dark comedy If I Had Legs I’d Kick You starring the incredibly talented Rose Byrne. Let me just say, Byrne is an absolute knockout in this film. The film follows the story of a young woman, played by Byrne, who is plagued by anxiety and constantly second-guessing herself. Her inner turmoil is brought to life in a series of hilarious and sometimes cringe-worthy situations that had the audience in stitches.
Byrne’s performance is a masterclass in comedic timing and physical comedy. She fully embodies the neurotic and quirky character, delivering her lines with perfect precision and nuance. It’s no wonder she’s been dubbed the queen of comedy in recent years.
The supporting cast also shines, with standout performances from the likes of Adam Scott and Maya Rudolph. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, adding an extra layer of depth to the already engaging story.
Overall, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is a must-see for any fan of dark comedies. It’s a refreshing take on the genre, with a strong female lead at its center. Keep an eye out for this film when it hits theaters – you won’t want to miss it.
