  • Boris Diaw talks Victor Wembanyama, Kobe Bryant, winning a title at 42 and more

    Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

BD: I don’t know [laughs], 2028 is still far away, we’re in 2025, and a lot can happen in three years. Obviously, we’ll try to get better and try to get the National Team improving year after year. And, yeah, it’s a new generation, new young guys… We’re gonna try to get ready and play the next competition in the next few years, and try to grow and be as good as possible. So yeah, maybe one day win a title.

It’s been a long time, 20 years since Argentina won the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics in Greece. Can Victor Wembanyama lead the team to a gold medal? It could be one of the proudest moments in French sports history.

BD: He will be a big piece, but it’s not about one guy. You need different pieces, and different players doing different things on the court to go in there and win. We’ll see what happens.

French basketball legend Boris Diaw recently sat down for an exclusive interview where he discussed a wide range of topics, including up-and-coming prospect Victor Wembanyama, his memories of playing against Kobe Bryant, and the possibility of winning a championship at the age of 42.

When asked about Wembanyama, the 7-foot-2 teenage phenom who has been drawing comparisons to Rudy Gobert and Kristaps Porzingis, Diaw had nothing but praise for the young talent. “Victor is an incredibly gifted player with a bright future ahead of him,” Diaw said. “His combination of size, skill, and basketball IQ is truly remarkable, and he has the potential to be a game-changer at the next level.”

Diaw also reflected on his time facing off against Kobe Bryant during his career, calling the late Lakers legend one of the toughest competitors he ever played against. “Kobe was a true warrior on the court, and his work ethic and dedication to the game were unmatched,” Diaw said. “It was always a challenge going up against him, but it was also a privilege to share the court with a player of his caliber.”

As for the possibility of winning a championship at the age of 42, Diaw remained optimistic. “I believe that age is just a number, and as long as you take care of your body and stay committed to the game, anything is possible,” he said. “I would love to add another championship to my resume, and I’m willing to put in the work to make that happen.”

Overall, Boris Diaw’s insights on Wembanyama, Bryant, and his own future in the game provide a fascinating look into the mind of a basketball legend who continues to inspire fans around the world.

Vanessa Bryant is releasing a new book called “Mamba & Mambacita Forever,” in honor of her late husband Kobe Bryant and their late daughter Gianna Bryant, who both died in a helicopter crash in January 2020.

The upcoming “Mamba & Mambacita Forever” will feature photos and images from Andrew D. Bernstein and stories behind over 100 public murals from Los Angeles and around the world that are dedicated to the late basketball legend and his daughter, both of whom championed the sport of basketball and women’s sports.

Vanessa Bryant’s upcoming book, “Mamba & Mambacita Forever,” will be released in August 2025.

Kobe Bryant was an NBA All-Star and played for the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years. He, his daughter Gianna, then 13, as well as seven others died after the helicopter they were traveling in crashed in Calabasas, California on Jan. 26, 2020. The passengers were all headed to a basketball tournament at the time.

“Mamba & Mambacita Forever” will be released Aug. 19, ahead of Kobe Bryant Day, which falls on Aug. 24.

“‘Mamba & Mambacita Forever’ ensures that the murals of Kobe and Gianna Bryant will live on even after the most monumental murals themselves have all crumbled,” a press release about the forthcoming book said.

In a statement, Sean McDonald, the publisher of MCD Books, which is publishing the book, said in part, “The book that Vanessa Bryant has put together with Andy Bernstein (who I worked with closely on The Mamba Mentality), celebrating the murals that went up all over the world to celebrate Kobe and Gianna, is more than a balm for the loss we all still feel. The book is truly beautiful, and it is again such a thrill—and a genuine honor—to get to publish it. It does not, however, provide closure—because it only proves how much Kobe and Gianna live on.”

  • ‘Mamba & Mambacita Forever’ Honors Husband Kobe, Daughter Gianna (Exclusive)

Vanessa Bryant is honoring the memory of her late husband Kobe Bryant and their daughter Gianna with a powerful new book.

To celebrate the outpouring of public art displayed around the world after the basketball legend and his daughter tragically died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26, 2020, Vanessa is set to publish Mamba & Mambacita Forever, a catalogue of over 100 murals and the stories that honor their lasting impact, PEOPLE can exclusively reveal.

After news of their passing shocked the world, fans across the globe grieved with the Bryant family through a variety of memorials: candlelit vigils, sculptures and public murals, recognizing Kobe and Gianna’s contributions to the world of basketball. Mamba & Mambacita Forever — which will be released on Aug. 19 to mark Kobe Bryant Day several days later — “brings together the images and stories” of the public art installations that honored the Byrants, per a press release shared with PEOPLE.

“Taken together, what emerges is the story of a man who became even more than he himself could have imagined, an avatar of determination, discipline and competitiveness. He was also a worldwide icon, one of the greatest athletes of our time, a man committed to his family and to fatherhood,” the release continues.

The name of the forthcoming book mirrors that of the nonprofit organization founded by Kobe — now the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation — which Vanessa announced was changed from its previous name “Mamba Sports Foundation” several weeks after the fatal crash in 2020.

“Because there is no #24 without #2,” Vanessa wrote on Instagram at the time, referencing Kobe and Gianna’s basketball jersey numbers.

The book’s photography is by award-winning photographer Andrew D. Bernstein — who previously collaborated with Kobe for his 2018 autobiographical book The Mamba Mentality: How I Play.

In addition to the memoir, Kobe also penned several YA novels, including the sports fantasy middle grade books Legacy and the Queen and Legacy and the Double, the latter of which was released posthumously, in collaboration with former pro squash player-turned-novelist Annie Matthew.

He felt it was important to teach kids lessons about life and emotions through the art of storytelling.”

In the years since Kobe and Gianna’s death, the family has honored their passing with a series of memorials. In August, in collaboration with Kobe’s former team, the Lakers, Vanessa unveiled a bronze statue titled “Girl Dad” outside of Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

“Happy birthday @kobebryant . I love you for now, forever & for always. ,” shared Vanessa on Instagram later that month, marking what would have been her late husband’s 46th birthday.

Mamba & Mambacita Forever by Vanessa Bryant comes out Aug. 19 from MCD, an imprint of Farrar, Straus and Giroux and is available for preorder now, wherever books are sold.

  • You HAVE to see this throwback video of Mark Pope blocking Kobe Bryant

Sometimes, the internet is an awesome place. For example: we now have a nearly 25-year-old video of a young Mark Pope blocking an even younger Kobe Bryant.

What started as an homage to Pope’s playing days in the NBA through a simple thread on social media quickly turned into something none of us have likely ever seen before. @rarerookies on X/Twitter posted a handful of old Pope photos from over two decades ago. Kentucky’s head coach was battling the likes of Michael Jordan, Kevin Garnett, Vince Carter, and many others during his stint (153 games played from 1997-2005) in the NBA.

But one picture stood out above the rest: Pope, 29 at the time, defending the late Kobe Bryant, 23, on a post-up. One hoops junkie was actually able to find that exact play. It was from a preseason game between Pope’s Milwaukee Bucks and Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers prior to the 2001-02 season. @zak123_2025 discovered video of the moment, which is better than you’d think. In the middle of the first quarter, Pope actually blocks Bryant’s shot as Bryant attempted a tough one-legged runner in the middle of the paint.

“Pope knocks it down his throat,” the announcer says.

Unfortunately, stats are hard to come by for this random preseason game on Oct. 25, 2001. So we don’t know exactly how Pope performed throughout this game. But this was right in the middle of his two-year run with the Bucks, easily his best stretch as an NBA player. He averaged 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 15 minutes per outing (63 games played) the season prior in 2000-01 before averaging 1.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in 9.5 minutes per contest in 2001-02 (45 games played).

Pope’s coaching career has panned out more favorably than his playing career, but he’ll always be able to say he blocked Kobe Bryant’s shot. Not many can make that claim.

Hey basketball fans! You HAVE to see this incredible throwback video of Mark Pope blocking Kobe Bryant. It’s a moment that will go down in history as one of the greatest defensive plays of all time. Check it out now and relive this epic moment! #NBA #Throwback #MarkPope #KobeBryant #BasketballHistory

  • Shameful secret that haunted Kobe Bryant till his horrific death revealed in new documentary

The sexual assault case that almost ruined Kobe Bryant‘s career is front and center in a new CNN documentary that puts the NBA great’s life under a microscope.

The film – due to debut on Saturday includes a newly unearthed police interview with a hotel clerk who accused the basketball legend of choking her during an alleged sexual assault.

The woman, who was 19 at the time of the alleged 2003 attack, is featured in the film Kobe: The Making of a Legend.

She went to the police with her claims and told the film that she felt ‘scared’ as Bryant tightened his grip on her neck every time she would say ‘no’.

Bryant, who played his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers, came forward after the claims were made and admitted that he cheated on his wife Vanessa, but strongly denied sexually assaulting the young woman.

It allegedly took place at The Lodge and Spa at the Cordillera, a hotel in Edward, Colorado, where Bryant checked in to undergo minor surgery.

Mark Hulbert was one of the Eagle County prosecutors who brought the case to court. He said the woman had been ‘resolute’ at the start of the process but the rulings and the attacks on her character ‘wore her down’

Mark Hulbert, one of the Eagle County prosecutors who brought the case forward, said in the film that the alleged victim was a front desk employee who greeted Bryant before he pulled her aside and asked her to give him a tour.

The pair went to his room and Bryant began kissing her, which the victim was initially okay with. But when he tried to go further, he allegedly grabbed her, put his hand around her neck and sexually assaulted her.

The case was proceeding through the courts but came to a standstill and was dropped a year later after the alleged victim stated she didn’t want to cooperate.

But this decision was frustrating for the prosecution who said in the film that justice was not done and that Bryant ‘knows what he did’.

According to Colorado District Court Chief Judge Ingrid Bakke, the victim had been ‘beat up for so long’ that she had ‘reached her breaking point’.

Bakke joined the prosecution’s team on the Bryant case in 2003. She had considerable experience working on sexual assault cases.

The allegation came during the middle of his career. He had a wife, a baby daughter who was five months old – and he could have been jailed for at least four years if found guilty

According to Bakke, one of the ‘strongest pieces’ of evidence was that the victim told a colleague right after the incident and said she didn’t want to speak out because ‘no-one’s going to believe me’.

Despite her hesitance, the woman went to police the next day and gave a statement.

The documentary reproduces whole chunks of the interview with Eagle County Sheriff Doug Winters, who is shown asking the victim where exactly Bryant was grabbing her butt and chest.

The victim said: ‘When he took off his pants, that’s when I started to kinda back up and to try to push his hands off me and that’s when he started to choke me.

‘He wasn’t choking me enough that I couldn’t breathe, just choking me to the point I was scared.’

Detective Winters asked the woman if she said anything during the incident. She replied: ‘I was scared and I said no a few times.’

The victim confirmed that Bryant heard her and said she knew because ‘every time I said no he tightened his hold around me’.

‘And then he would lean his face real close to me and ask me questions (like) you’re not going to tell anybody, right?’ the woman added.

When Bryant was first called by police he denied everything and said that his wife not finding out was ‘all I care about’.

But then he admitted involvement with the woman and said he did have his hand around her neck.

Bryant told police: ‘I had my right hand like this, and my other hand like that.’

When asked how hard he was holding her, Bryant said: ‘I don’t know. My hands are strong.’

In the documentary, Hulbert describes the case as strong and said the victim had ‘the details right up front’, unlike most sexual assault victims who were too traumatized to have a clear memory.

After the charges were filed, Bryant appeared at a press conference holding hands with Vanessa and saying he was ‘innocent’ but he admitted adultery and said he was ‘furious at myself’.

‘I love my wife with all my heart,’ Bryant said, turning to Vanessa and saying: ‘She’s my backbone, you’re a blessing’.

Bakke says that when she saw the press conference, her view was that Bryant was ‘so scared and I’m saying this because I have to say this’.

Bryant’s life in the documentary will, according to the outlet, put a light on the ‘unseen forces’ that shaped Bryant’s life until his untimely death in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles in 2020 at the age of 41.

His 13-year-old daughter Gianna died alongside him. He was survived by Vanessa, 42, and three other daughters Natalia, 22, Bianka, eight and Capri, five.

The sexual assault allegation came during the middle of his career, he had a wife, a five month-old daughter and he could have been jailed for at least four years if found guilty.

But the mood turned against the prosecution almost immediately with the public showing support towards Bryant who was given the Choice Male Athlete of the Year award just 14 days after he was charged.

Bryant bought his wife a $4million, eight carat diamond ring which earned him some ridicule.

Bakke described how as the case got going, Bryant’s lawyers threw ‘everything’ they could at the victim to ‘break her down’.

That included Bryant’s lawyer repeatedly naming the victim during one hearing, despite an agreement not to do so.

Bryant’s lawyer even suggested that the victim could have gotten her injuries from having sex with three men over three days – even though nobody had ever suggested that.

In a devastating blow, the judge in the case ruled that the woman’s past sexual history could be brought up during the trial.

Hulbert said the woman had been ‘resolute’ at the start of the process but the rulings and the attacks just ‘wore her down’.

Then, in September 2004, as the jury was being chosen, Hulbert got a call from the victim who said ‘I don’t want to do this anymore’.

He said: ‘She had been so beat up for so long she’d reached her breaking point and had enough.’

According to Hulbert, in the wake of the case being dropped, there was a ‘significant’ plummet in the number of women reporting sexual assaults in Eagle County.

The woman did sue Bryant in a civil case, and as part of the settlement he issued an apology.

Bryant said: ‘After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.’

In the documentary Bakke dismissed the apology, saying it was ‘well crafted’.

Bakke said in the film: ‘Do I think justice prevailed? Absolutely not…he knows what he did.’

Among the other details in the film are insights into Bryant’s ‘Black Mamba’ alter ego which was inspired by a scene with a killer snake in the movie ‘Kill Bill’.

Friends reveal that Bryant used the hate that he got after the sex assault case to fuel his game, rather than letting it eat him up.

Journalist Scoop Jackson, a close pal of Bryant, said that a ‘switch was flipped and the Black Mamba was born’.

‘It got him through the darkest time of his life,’ he said.

Lakers fitness coach Gary Vitti said: ‘Nobody had rage like him, nobody, adding that Bryant was ‘like a dragon, the angrier he gets the more he’s going to douse you’.

DailyMail.com has contacted Bryant’s lawyers and representatives for comment.

  • Kobe Bryant once won a $5000 bet and one-up LeBron James

Kobe Bryant once won a $5000 bet and one-up LeBron James

Chris Duhon played his final year in the NBA with Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers. The Lakers acquired him in a four-team trade that saw Dwight Howard land in Hollywood. Duhon retired following the 2012-13 season.

On the “KarterKast” podcast, the former NBA player shared a never-before-heard Bryant story regarding a $5000 bet, which Bryant won. Duhon said:

“When you get on the plane, you can get the sheets from all the scores and stats from everyone that’s played on that day. We’re kind of going through it and I was sitting next to him at that time. He was like, ‘LeBron (James) gets another triple-double.’

“I was like, ‘S**t, you ain’t never get one of them because your a** don’t pass.’ And he starts laughing, and he was like, ‘Alright, I bet you $5,000 I get a triple-double the next game (which he eventually did).’ I’m like, ‘Bet it.’ Sure enough, he was one assist and one rebound shy at halftime. Every time he was doing it, he was just looking at me and winking.”

The game Duhon likely referred to was against the Dallas Mavericks on Apr. 2, 2013. Kobe Bryant finished the game with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, four steals and two blocks, leading the LA Lakers to a 101-81 win. KB24 was two rebounds and an assist shy of a triple-double by halftime.

LeBron James had a game three nights after Bryant had recorded a triple-double. King James led the Miami Heat to a 106-87 win over the Orlando Magic. He ended the game with 27 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Kobe Bryant finished that season with two triple-doubles, while LeBron James, named the NBA MVP, had four.

Kobe Bryant reportedly once claimed that he could record a triple-double every game

Chris Duhon didn’t end his story with Kobe Byrant winning the $5,000 bet. The former backup guard added:

“We talked after the game. … He was just like, ‘If I wanted to, I can get a triple-double every game. But, my team needs me to score. I wanna take the hearts out of anyone that’s guarded me and the other team knowing that they can’t stop me.

The Mamba Mentality. That was just his mentality. He wanted to go out, compete at the highest level and make sure that you know that he was the player on the court at all times.”

A big part of Kobe Bryant’s legend was his unrelenting desire to succeed and improve his game. He was fiercely competitive and had a no-holds-barred approach against opponents. The Duhon story told a familiar theme about how Bryant competed.
