    By Lee Gyu-lee

JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, BigHit Music, and other K-pop agencies are preparing to launch new groups in 2025, promising another successful year for the K-pop music scene.

JYP is the first on the list, finally announcing the start of pre-debut promotions for its new seven-member boy group, KickFlip.

During the 2024 MAMA Awards, held in Los Angeles last November, the agency’s head Park Jin-young unveiled the group, saying he is “finalizing preparations for the debut of KickFlip set to launch next year.”

The group’s name refers to a skateboarding technique, in which a rider rotates the board 360 degrees with the toes.

“The seven-member group KickFlip, which has become JYP’s new face, will make a spectacular start to 2025 with the ambition to forge new ways without being bound by existing conventions, just like rotating a board forward,” the agency said in the release.

Among seven members, four of them are the finalists from the 2021 music survival show “LOUD,” which Park joined hands with PSY to scout members to make their debut. The top five finalists for JYP Entertainments were Lee Gye-hun, Amaru, Keiju, Lee Dong-hyeon, and Yoon Min. But Yoon left the agency last year to debut as a solo under another label, Howtouse.

The group was scheduled to begin its debut project on Wednesday and drop promotional content. However, due to the tragedy of the Jeju Air plane crash, the agency has postponed the schedule to Jan. 6.

SM Entertainment also announced that it will be debuting a new girl group within the first quarter as it announced big plans for its 30th anniversary this year. This will be the first girl group in five years since aespa.

“SM has been building intellectual properties (IP) of artists across all generations of K-pop through not only existing artists but also continued debuts of new artists. And we will strengthen our artist lineup further through the debut of a new girl group,” Jang Cheol-hyuk, the co-CEO of the agency said in the release.

“As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we plan to present various projects including concerts, albums, and merchandise for the many fans who have loved SM, so please look forward to it.”

SM’s first British boy group, dearALICE, is also set to make its official debut. Last November, the agency announced that it had inked a partnership with the U.S. label gamma. to release the five-piece act’s debut single in the coming months.

BigHit Music and Starship Entertainment are preparing to make their next boy group. BigHit held a global audition in 2023 to scout for talents to follow BTS and Tomorrow X Together, and IVE’s agency, Starship, launched an open audition “2025 New Kids On The STARSHIP,” last July, with the goal to debut a new boy group in 2025.

Star composer and producer Yoon Il-sang will be presenting a new girl group, UDTT, this year. The five-pieced group is comprised with contestants from survival shows “Girls Planet 999,” “Universe Ticket,” and “My Teenage Girl.”

It has been gearing up for its official debut with a webtoon, following the group’s debut story, and releasing a pre-debut single “RETRY” to draw fans’ anticipation.

The finalists from the music competition show “Make Mate 1” are set to make their debut under the name NouerA. The seven members — Gihyeon, Junpyo, Hyunjun, Yuseop, Lin, Fan and Miraku — inked a deal with the agency Nouer Entertainment, led by the former BigHit Entertainment head CEO Chae Young-gon, who spearheaded the rise of BTS.

The group has been gaining attention even before its official debut this month, thanks to its popularity from the audition show. It held its first fan meeting event in Japan in September and released a pre-debut single, “MU,” in December.

The new virtual boy group, SKINZ, is set to make debut, according to Bridge Entertainment. The seven-membered group is preparing for its debut album, joining hands with the star producer EL CAPITXN, who previously worked with BTS, IU and NCT.

The group recently unveiled a teaser during SBS’ year-end music festival Gayo Daejeon on Dec. 25, giving a glimpse of its energetic and mischievous concept.

Are you ready for the next big K-pop group debut rush? Top agencies are gearing up to introduce new talent to the industry this year, and fans are eagerly anticipating what these groups have to offer.

With the success of groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, and TWICE, the K-pop industry is more competitive than ever. Agencies are putting in the work to train and promote their trainees, hoping to create the next big sensation.

From powerhouse companies like SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment to rising stars like Big Hit Entertainment and JYP Entertainment, everyone is vying for a piece of the K-pop pie.

Keep an eye out for teasers, debut announcements, and more as these agencies prepare to showcase their newest groups to the world. Who will be the next breakout stars in the K-pop scene? Stay tuned to find out!

Three minor girls stage kidnapping to meet K-Pop band BTS; found safe and returned to parents

Three minor girls from Dharashiv’s Omerga staged their own kidnapping on December 28 in a bid to fulfil their dream of meeting global K-Pop supergroup BTS. However, the police were quick to step in, track them down and return them safely to their families.
On Monday, it was reported that the girls, aged 13 and 11, were avid fans of BTS and followed the band on social media. According to Superintendent of Police Sanjay Jadhav, their fascination with the boy band led them to plan a journey to South Korea. “The girls intended to go to Pune first, earn money, and then fund their travel to South Korea to meet BTS,” Jadhav explained.
The three boarded a bus to Pune from Omerga on the evening of December 28. Before departing, one of the 13-year-olds called her parents, claiming that she and her friends had been kidnapped. “The call was made to prevent their parents from worrying about their delayed return home,” Jadhav added. The parents immediately contacted the local police, who used mobile phone tracking and located the girls within 30 minutes. The bus they were travelling in was intercepted near Mohol in Solapur, approximately 115 km from Omerga.
“The girls were safely removed from the bus and brought back to Omerga,” Jadhav confirmed to TOI.
The next day, the police enquired with the girls, who confessed their plan to work in Pune to earn enough money to then head to South Korea to meet the boyband.

Upon their return to their parents, the police reportedly counselled the girls on the risks of their actions and the effects of excessive social media exposure. Their parents were also counselled and advised to monitor and limit their children’s screen time to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Early this month, another group of teens made headlines when they ran away from a school hostel in Visakhapatnam after being inspired by the movie ‘Lucky Baskhar’. The four minor boys, who fled from their hostel in a big to become rich and buy cars, were rescued by the police from Vijayawada railway station.

In a bizarre turn of events, three minor girls who staged their own kidnapping in order to meet their favorite K-Pop band BTS have been found safe and returned to their parents.

The girls, aged 13 to 15, went missing from their homes in Seoul, South Korea, prompting a massive search effort by authorities and concerned parents. It was later revealed that the girls had planned and executed their own disappearance in a bid to meet BTS, whom they idolized.

The girls were found in a hotel room in a nearby city, where they had been hiding out and following updates on their favorite band. They were unharmed and returned to their families, who were relieved to have them back safe and sound.

While the incident may have seemed harmless on the surface, authorities have warned against such behavior, emphasizing the importance of communication with parents and seeking help from adults in times of trouble.

Despite their misguided actions, the girls’ love for BTS remains unwavering, and they have vowed to continue supporting the band in a more responsible manner. The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of obsession and the importance of seeking help when needed.

Rosé and Bruno Mars’ ‘APT.’ becomes fastest K-pop music video to hit 700 million views, breaking Psy’s 12-year record for ‘Gangnam Style’

SEOUL, Dec 29 — Rosé’s collaboration with Bruno Mars, “APT.”, has surpassed 700 million views on YouTube, breaking a 12-year K-pop music video record previously held by PSY’s “Gangnam Style”.

Released on October 18, 2024, as the lead single from Rosé’s debut solo album Rosie, the track has been steadily climbing charts and setting new milestones since its release.

The video hit the 700 million-view mark in just 70 days and 13 hours, outpacing “Gangnam Style”, which took 118 days to achieve the same feat.

This makes “APT.” the fourth-fastest music video in YouTube history to reach the milestone, following behind Adele’s “Hello”, Nicky Jam and J. Balvin’s “X (EQUIS)”, and DJ Snake’s “Taki Taki”.

In addition to its YouTube success, APT has dominated global charts.

On December 23, Billboard confirmed the song’s reign at number 1 on the Global 200 chart with 142 million streams, while also topping the Global Excl. US charts for a ninth consecutive week. It became the longest-running number one hit of 2024 on the Global 200.

The song’s success was further cemented on December 27, when it won Song of the Year (Daesang) at the Asia Artist Awards 2024.

Inspired by a South Korean drinking game, “APT.” has become a defining anthem of the season, showcasing both artists’ immense global appeal.

For Rosé, the track also signifies a new chapter in her career, following her departure from YG Entertainment in 2023 and her first solo release in three years.

Rosé and Bruno Mars’ ‘APT.’ Breaks K-pop Record with 700 Million Views!

In an exciting turn of events, Rosé and Bruno Mars’ collaboration track ‘APT.’ has officially become the fastest K-pop music video to reach 700 million views on YouTube. This incredible achievement not only solidifies the global popularity of K-pop but also marks a significant milestone in the industry.

The music video, which features stunning visuals and catchy choreography, has captivated fans all around the world since its release. With Rosé’s powerful vocals and Bruno Mars’ infectious energy, ‘APT.’ has proven to be a chart-topping hit that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.

This record-breaking success also means that ‘APT.’ has surpassed Psy’s iconic ‘Gangnam Style’ music video, which held the title for 12 years as the fastest K-pop video to reach 700 million views. The fact that Rosé and Bruno Mars have managed to achieve this feat in such a short amount of time speaks volumes about the impact of their collaboration and the dedication of their fans.

As we celebrate this momentous occasion, it’s clear that ‘APT.’ is not just a song but a cultural phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. Congratulations to Rosé, Bruno Mars, and everyone involved in creating this incredible music video! Let’s continue to support and celebrate K-pop’s continued success on the global stage.

Squid Game season 2 finally arrived on Netflix on December 26, 2024, pulling viewers into a new set of deadly children’s games played for a life-changing prize. While the season includes returns from original cast members, from Lee Jung-jae and Wi Ha-joon to Lee Byung-hun and Gong Yoo, it dedicates most of its time to introducing a new set of desperate, debt-ridden players.

Among the new season 2 cast, one actor surprising fans with their dark comedic performance is Choi Seung-hyun as the pill-popping, retired rapper Thanos (Player 230). Choi’s casting became an immediate topic of conversation among K-pop fans, as he’s known as the former member of one of Korea’s most successful idol groups. For anyone unfamiliar with the actor and rapper, read on to learn more about Choi Seung-hyun, a.k.a. T.O.P, and his decades-long entertainment career. (And once you finish watching the new episode, check out our breakdown of Squid Game season 2’s ending and our guide to the forthcoming season 3.)

Choi Seung-hyun, a.k.a. T.O.P, is a former member of BIGBANG.

Choi, 37, is best known among music fans as T.O.P, the former lead rapper and visual for the iconic boy group BIGBANG. The musician began his career as an underground rapper before debuting with BIGBANG in 2006. The group went on to sell over 140 million records worldwide, and their song “Fantastic Baby” was the first K-pop music video to hit 300 million views on YouTube. Choi also released solo singles, including “Turn It Up” and “Doom Dada.”

After a tumultuous extended hiatus (more on that below), Choi left YG Entertainment in 2022, before officially withdrawing from BIGBANG in June 2023. Though he hasn’t recently released solo music, he did participate in co-writing the group’s 2022 single “Still Life.”

He’s an award-winning actor who made his debut in 2007.

Choi won his first acting role just a year after his music debut, with a role in the romantic K-drama I Am Sam. The star actually collaborated with some of his Squid Game co-stars earlier in his career. He worked with Yang Dong-eun in I Am Sam, and in 2009, Choi and Lee Byung-hun starred in the popular thriller K-drama Iris.

In 2010, Choi received two Best New Actor awards for his performance in the Korean War movie 71: Into the Fire, from Korea’s prestigious Blue Dragon Film Awards and Baeksang Arts Awards.

His other notable credits in the years since include the 2013 action film Commitment, the 2014 crime movie Tazza: The Hidden Card, and the 2015 romance drama The Secret Message. Squid Game season 2 is Choi’s first acting role since the 2017 Chinese film Out of Control.

He’s an art collector and the grand-nephew of a pioneering Korean artist.

Choi was born into an artistic family; his great-uncle is the famed Korean abstract artist Kim Whanki, whose piece “Universe” became the first-ever Korean painting to sell for over $10 million at a 2019 auction.

Now Choi is an avid art collector himself. He and his BIGBANG bandmate (and childhood friend) G-Dragon were listed on ARTnews’ 2019 list of 50 Art Collectors to Watch. Choi also occasionally shares the new art he’s acquired on his Instagram.

In addition to his art hobby, the actor is an entrepreneur who owns the brand T’SPOT Wine. He was also formerly set to go to space as part of Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa’s dearMoon civilian mission, but the project was canceled in June 2023.

He served 10 months in prison for illegal marijuana use.

Choi took a hiatus from his entertainment career in early 2017, as he began serving his mandatory military service as a conscripted policeman. That June, he was accused of smoking marijuana, which is an illegal substance in South Korea that holds a sentence of up to five years in prison.

Choi pleaded guilty to using marijuana four times; the judge sentenced him to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years since the actor showed regret for his actions, and publicly apologized to his fans. Choi served his probation for two years and completed his military service as a public service worker in July 2019.

‘Squid Game’ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has defended his casting.

In an interview before Squid Game season 2’s release, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk defended his choice in casting Choi, arguing that the actor was “necessary” for the show.

“In the case of Choi Seung-hyun, it was quite a while when I decided to cast him,” he told Maeil Business Newspaper. “The sentence was already handed down, the probation period was over, and if that time had passed, I thought it would be time to start something like this again.”

Hwang added, “[Choi] showed a lot of effort and talent when he worked hard and sent me acting videos and verified them once again when he was nervous while reading…I can’t tell you in detail what kind of character it is, but it takes a lot of courage for Choi Seung-hyun to play this role. That’s why I personally thought this actor was the best fit for me.”

Choi Seung-hyun, also known by his stage name T.O.P, is a well-known Korean actor and former K-pop idol who has recently stirred up controversy with his role as Thanos in the highly anticipated ‘Squid Game’ Season 2.

Seung-hyun first rose to fame as a member of the popular boy band Big Bang, where he gained a large following for his charismatic personality and powerful vocals. However, he soon transitioned into acting and has since starred in several successful dramas and films.

His casting as Thanos in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 has caused quite a stir among fans, with many expressing mixed feelings about his portrayal of the iconic Marvel villain. Some have praised his performance, noting his ability to bring depth and complexity to the character, while others have criticized the decision to cast him in such a high-profile role.

Despite the controversy, Seung-hyun remains a talented and versatile actor, known for his dedication to his craft and his ability to bring characters to life on screen. Fans of ‘Squid Game’ are eager to see how he will bring his unique interpretation to the character of Thanos in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates on Choi Seung-hyun and his role in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2!

Squid Game Director Calls Season 2 K-Pop Star T.O.P.’s ‘Comeback’ After Marijuana Scandal (Exclusive)

K-pop star T.O.P is making a comeback thanks to Squid Game.

In July 2017, Choi Seung-hyun, who made his mark as T.O.P in mega hit K-pop band BIGBANG, was given a 10-month jail sentence and a two-year suspension from his mandatory military service after he was found guilty of using marijuana, an illegal substance in South Korea, per Korean news outlet, Yonhap.

Following the scandal, the rapper and actor was blackballed from the Korean entertainment industry until his most recent appearance in Squid Game season 2 as Thanos, a famous rapper turned erratic Player 230 who uses drugs while competing in the deadly games.

Choi Seung-hyun aka T.O.P in ‘Squid Game’ season 2.

    Netflix

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk opens up about his decision to cast the controversial actor and admits he was blown away by his performance in the K-drama series.

“As you may know, the actor Seung-hyun, about nine years ago got involved in a marijuana scandal in Korea and wasn’t able to do any projects for the past nine years in Korea,” he explains. “And so this is a comeback after quite a long hiatus, and particularly because he portrays a character that’s a rapper and also someone who is on drugs.”

“I feel that it took him a lot of guts, in a way, to portray a character, especially someone who shares a lot of similarities that are quite negative to him as a person too,” Hwang admits. “So I think it took him a lot of courage to take on that role.”

“Despite the long hiatus, I have to say, as a director, he performed very impressively and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character,” he adds.

Upon Choi’s indictment on June 5, 2017, he released a handwritten apology to his fans on his agency YG Entertainment’s website.

“First of all, I would like to extend my sincere apology to many of you for causing huge disappointment and disturbance,” he wrote, per the Korea Herald. “I feel so embarrassed that I can’t show myself in front of you to apologize.”

“I have no excuses and deserve any kind of punishment. I feel very regretful and fearful for having left an irreparable scar in everyone’s hearts, including our members, my agency, friends and family. I will reflect on my wrongdoing over and over again,” the outlet reported. “Once more, I apologize for not being able to apologize to everyone personally.”

Just one day after his indictment, Choi was hospitalized when he was found unconscious after overdosing on prescribed tranquilizers during his mandatory military service, where he was working as a policeman in Seoul.

At the time, YG Entertainment shared a news article by Sports Chosun to their website, reporting that he had regained consciousness and had been transferred to another hospital where he was receiving psychiatric care.

When he received his sentence in July of that year, Choi addressed the Korean public and issued another apology for his actions.

“I’m truly sorry that I disappointed my fans and the public. I will do my best to make a fresh start and not to make such a mistake again with what I’ve learned from this lesson,” he told reporters at the time, according to Yonhap.
