‘Wicked’ Director Explains Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth’s Cameos

With two of the most anticipated movie cameos of the year, Jon M. Chu had his work cut out for him.

The Wicked director recently recounted how he conceived an appearance for the original Broadway musical’s stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth during the song ‘One Short Day’, performed with their successors Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

“It was a tightrope that we all had to talk about a lot, with Stephen [Schwartz] and Winnie [Holzman] as well, where’s the best place,” Chu told CinemaBlend. “And we had them as cameo roles at some point, like, ‘maybe they’re Galinda’s parents’ or ‘maybe they’re this or that.’ And those were all fine and good, but every time we thought of it more, it didn’t feel — they’re at the top of their game right now. They’re at the top of their game right now. They’re not like some people who don’t do it there. [If] they are there, you want them to do their thing, and I always felt like as a fan myself, if I see them in this movie, I’m going to want them to do their thing.

The director explained that he envisioned a “Wizomania” type of ride when the two women arrive in Oz, inspired by the Disney ride ‘It’s a Small World’, “where you get into a boat and it takes you through the history of Oz.”

“And it was going to be a performance that happens around them and all this stuff and then sends you back to the Wizard’s palace,” he said. “So, we had that, because we needed to set up what the show didn’t have too much about, that we had to do, which was set up the Grimmerie, why the Wizard was here, what the prophecy is — we had a lot of information to give.”

Wicked becomes biggest stage musical adaptation ever worldwide

Chu continued, “And it was during those conversations that Stephen and I were talking, and I suggested, ‘We have this section anyway, that’s sort of outside of the narrative that we need to give. Maybe that’s where you do it, so you can add a little sugar to the information.’ And he was like, ‘Give me one night.’ And he rewrote the whole thing as a performance for these girls. It was so fun, that’s where it felt like this is a great moment of sort of a send-off.”

Menzel and Chenoweth originated the roles of Elphaba and Galinda when Wicked premiered on Broadway in 2003, earning the former a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical, for which her co-star was also nominated.

“Wicked” Director Explains Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth’s Cameos

Fans of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked” were thrilled to see original stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth make cameo appearances in the recently released film adaptation. Director Jon M. Chu sat down with us to explain how he was able to bring these iconic actresses back to the world of Oz.

Chu revealed that he knew from the beginning that he wanted to include Menzel and Chenoweth in the film in some capacity. “Their performances as Elphaba and Glinda are so ingrained in the hearts of fans, I knew we had to find a way to honor that legacy,” he said.

The director explained that Menzel and Chenoweth were more than willing to make a cameo appearance, despite their busy schedules. “They both love ‘Wicked’ as much as the fans do, so they were excited to be a part of the film in any way they could,” Chu shared.

As for their cameos, Chu kept details under wraps to surprise fans. “I wanted their appearances to be a special moment for the audience, so I won’t give too much away,” he teased. “But I can promise that their performances will bring a smile to your face and a tear to your eye.”

With the inclusion of Menzel and Chenoweth, “Wicked” fans can rest assured that the film adaptation stays true to the magic and heart of the beloved musical.

Shayna’s Favorites: Kristin Chenoweth and pickleball take over Boston

Chenoweth chose Boston for the world premiere of her Broadway-bound musical, ‘The Queen of Versailles’

DOES IT EVER GET OLD TO SEE YOUR FACE, YOUR NAME ON THE MARQUEE? NO. I AM AN ACTRESS. YOU KNOW, MUSICAL MEGASTAR KRISTIN CHENOWETH TAKES OVER BOSTON’S EMERSON COLONIAL THEATER FOR THE WORLD PREMIERE OF HER BROADWAY BOUND MUSICAL, QUEEN OF VERSAILLES. INSIDE, WE SIT DOWN TO TALK ABOUT THE SHOW, AND I’M TREATED TO A PREVIEW OF THE VOICE THAT WON OVER CRITICS LONG BEFORE HER BREAKOUT ROLE AS THE ORIGINAL GLINDA IN THE MUSICAL WICKED. OKAY, SO THAT LITTLE THING THAT YOU JUST DID. I’M NOT EVEN GOING TO TRY TO PRETEND YOU’RE A TRAINED OPERA SINGER. I WENT TO OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY AND I HAD A GREAT MENTOR THERE, AND I WAS JUST GOING TO DO GOSPEL COUNTRY MUSIC THEATER, AND SHE SAID, NO, I SEE SOMETHING ELSE. I STILL TRAIN THAT WAY. THAT’S WHY I DO EIGHT SHOWS A WEEK STILL, AND I LOVE IT. I’M A CLASSICAL GIRL AT HEART, BUT I’M AN ACTRESS FIRST. SO TELL US ABOUT THE SHOW. THERE WAS A DOCUMENTARY IN 2012 CALLED THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES. IT IS BASED ON THE SIEGEL FAMILY, SPECIFICALLY JACKIE SIEGEL. SHE’S A COMPLICATED CHARACTER WHO IS BUILDING THE LARGEST PRIVATE HOME IN AMERICA. I HAVE BEEN SO LUCKY, GRATEFUL, BLESSED ALL THE THINGS IN MY CAREER. THUS FAR WITH CHARACTERS THAT I’VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH. THIS IS NO DIFFERENT. HAVING HEARD ABOUT KRISTEN, THE ACTRESS, I DECIDED TO DIG INTO KRISTEN, THE PERSON WITH A ROUND OF RAPID FIRE OKLAHOMA COUNTRYSIDE OR NEW YORK CITY SKYLINE. YOU’RE KILLING ME. I AM ME. AT THE END OF THE DAY, I’LL PROBABLY DIE IN NEW YORK CITY HAPPILY, BUT I’M ALWAYS GOING TO WANT TO BE IN THE OKLAHOMA COUNTRYSIDE. HEELS OR FLATS? HEELS. EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. RED CARPET EVENT OR QUIET NIGHT AT HOME. QUIET NIGHT AT HOME. YOU’RE ONE OF THOSE REASON THESE THINGS. HEELS. ALL RIGHT. THIS IS THE TOUGH ONE. GO TO KARAOKE SONG. HOW DO I GET THROUGH ONE NIGHT WITHOUT YOU? I DON’T WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU. WHAT KIND OF LIFE WOULD THAT BE? OH, I LOVE YOU. I LOVE THAT SONG. OH, MY GOD, I LOVE THAT SONG. AND IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH, KRISTIN GUIDES US BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE EMERSON COLONIAL THEATER, WHERE FINISHING TOUCHES ARE BEING PLACED ON A SET RUMORED TO BE AS GRAND AS THIS VENUE. SO THIS IS OUR SET. AND YOU KNOW WHAT? YEAH, NO, YOU’RE GONNA HAVE TO COME BACK AND SEE THE SHOW. SORRY. I’LL SEE YOU LATER. BYE. YOU HEARD HER. WE GOT TO SEE THE SHOW. IT’S TAKEN OVER OUR PARKS AND IS MOVING INTO OUR MALLS. THREE. SEVEN. ONE. HERE IT IS. OH, YEP. IT’S EVEN FOUND ITS WAY BEHIND BARS. PICKLEBALL, THE FASTEST GROWING SPORT IN THE COUNTRY. BUT RAPID EXPANSION HAS LED TO TURF WARS. THE PICKLEBALLERS SAY WHEN THEY CAME BACK ON MONDAY, THEY FOUND FOUR OF THEIR SIX NETS SLASHED. AND GROWTH DOESN’T COME WITHOUT GROWING PAINS. IF YOU’RE LIVING WITHIN 150FT OF THESE COURTS, IT MAKES YOU NUTS. STILL, CRIES OF PROTESTS ARE STRUGGLING TO BE HEARD OVER THE MOUNTING POP POP POP OF A NATION OBSESSED. THERE’S NOT ENOUGH COURTS NOW. THIS SPORT WANTS SAFELY CONFINED TO SUNNY RETIREMENT COMPOUNDS IS COMING FOR OUR YOUNG. I WAS ON A CALL WITH MY FRIEND AND HE SAID, PICKLEBALL, WHERE ARE YOU? 90 AND MORE AND MORE FAMILIES HAVE HAD TO CONFRONT A LOVED ONE. I TOLD YOU, I’M TRYING MY BEST WITH THAT DIFFICULT QUESTION. IS IT AN ADDICTION? ARE YOU AN ADDICT WHEN NO ONE’S LOOKING FOR ONE? IT’S EASY TO PICK UP AND ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP. THE THING ABOUT PICKLEBALL IS THAT IT’S LIKE EATING A POTATO CHIP. OH, IN IN IN. WHY DON’T YOU GET OUT THERE? AND WHY DON’T YOU GET A GOOD SHOT? YOU SAY, I WANT TO DO THAT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. NICE. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. IT GIVES ME GREAT PRIDE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO MY MOTHER, CHARLENA SEYMOUR, PROFESSOR EMERITA OF COMMUNICATION DISORDERS, FORMER UNIVERSITY PROVOST. AND THESE DAYS, TOTAL PICKLEBALL FIEND. OH, NICE ONE. THEY CALL THEMSELVES THE HOT SHOTS. MY MOM’S REGULAR PARTNERS, KATHY, BRENDA AND HELENE, HAVE BROUGHT THEIR SKILLS AND THEIR MATCHING PICKLEBALL SOCKS TO THE VILLAGE SPORTS CLUB IN PLYMOUTH. HOW CAN THAT BE A NICE POINT? THEY WON IT. YEAH, IT’S A FEISTY GROUP. DO YOU GUYS GET COMPETITIVE? YES. LISTEN, EVERYBODY IN THE GROUP LIKES TO WIN. THERE’S NO IFS, ANDS AND BUTS ABOUT IT. I SCREW UP MY COURAGE AND STEP INTO THE LION’S DEN. SOMETIMES I HAVE A HARD TIME TELLING MY FRIENDS WHO PLAY TENNIS THAT I PLAY PICKLEBALL BECAUSE THEY SAY, OH, YOU’VE GONE TO THE DARK SIDE. JUST HOW BIG A PICKLE FANATIC IS MY MOTHER? WELL, FOR HER 80TH BIRTHDAY, SHE DECIDED THERE WAS ONLY ONE WAY TO CELEBRATE. OUR ENTIRE CLAN WAS TO GATHER FOR A FULL DAY OF, YOU GUESSED IT, PICKLEBALL. I SAID, WHAT CAN WE ALL DO? AND WHAT CAN I BE? THE BEST AT? WHAT CAN I BEAT? EVERYBODY AT? SO IT WAS PICKLEBALL. THAT’S FOR SURE. OH, MOMMY AND IF PICKLEBALL WILL KEEP YOU LOOKING GOOD AND IN HIGH SPIRITS AT 80, SIGN ME UP. BACK TO KRISTIN CHENOWETH, THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES. RUN WAS IN BOSTON, IS NOW OVER. IT IS EXPECTED ON BROADWAY DURING THE 2025 TO 2026 SEASON.

Bright lights, glowy city, and Kristin Chenoweth

Dec. 28—In a short time, we’ve seen enough performances at the Lensic Performing Arts Center to believe every concert is going to be memorable.

I’m not qualified or talented enough to join the Pasatiempo staff as a performing arts reporter, so take my assessment of Kristin Chenoweth’s recent concert from the perspective of a transplanted, former Oklahoman who understands her y’alls.

Kristin, simply put, made her Mama proud on a Saturday night with the Plaza in festive mode.

The versatile entertainer, who starred in the original Wicked on Broadway and showed her acting chops and comedic timing on West Wing, brought that voice, that drawl and that lovable persona to a sweetly paced performance.

Kristin professed to the audience her love of binging on The Real Housewives of (insert large city/place, exotic or otherwise) series and mused there couldn’t be a Real Housewives of Santa Fe because everyone here is so nice.

(Saturday Night Live did a Real Housewives of Santa Fe skit in September, but they dined on fake fajitas instead of blue corn enchiladas with Christmas blend and posole, so the authenticity was soooooo New York.)

It was a remarkable, meaningful concert. So, too, was the experience of getting there and back.

If you haven’t seen the Plaza at night, do so before the lights come down.

I watched city of Santa Fe crews cordoning off sections of the Plaza for what felt like weeks. Even on Saturdays, crews were there in the crisp cold mornings, meticulously stringing lights section by section.

Why the effort? It’s a reasonable question for anyone who overthinks logic.

The Plaza landscape isn’t dominated by evergreens. Can naked branches with scattered bulbs put everyone in a Silent-Night-meets-Santa-Claus-Is-Comin’-To-Town mood?

We won’t make you read to the end of the column. Why, yes, naked branches can glow. And when glowy naked branches create a truly lit choir with other glowy naked branches, you’re transcended by the ethereal feeling.

The Northern New Mexico night sky has been clear, and the lights create an imaginary canopy that enhances the Plaza’s significant mystique. Children race around. Couples hold hands. It’s a lifelong moment — meaning everyone takes selfies.

So credit city employees and visionaries for all the reasons that make the holidays special here. The world knows.

Livability, Conde Nast Traveler, Vogue, The Travel, Newsweek, and Travel + Leisure are among the publications that have mentioned Santa Fe for its holiday experiences this year.

Conde Nast Traveler this year also ranked Santa Fe as No. 2 on its list of “The Best Small Cities in the U.S.” and No. 3 among “The Friendliest Cities in the U.S.” in the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Other accolades have come from Michelin Guide, Moviemaker Magazine, Time, Travel + Leisure, and USA TODAY’s 10 Best.

Santa Fe isn’t perfect, but that’s not breaking news.

Some in the city administrative ranks spend too much time obsessing whether news coverage is “positive” or “negative” when public accountability always has been a blend. Take the bad with the good. That’s reality when you’re in public service.

Anyone could benefit from channeling some Chenoweth-ness.

For more than 90 minutes, she delighted a capacity crowd with songs, stories and self-deprecation. Of aging. Of missed opportunities. Of realizing the world is meant to be different.

How we respond in those moments — with reason, courage or humor — matters the most.

Here’s to finding your inner Kristin in 2025.

When you wonder about the improbable, look for the glowy branches.

Bright lights, glowy city, and Kristin Chenoweth: A magical night in New York City

Last night, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a concert featuring the one and only Kristin Chenoweth in the heart of New York City. As I made my way through the bustling streets, the city lights seemed to twinkle with an extra sparkle, as if they too were excited for the night ahead.

As I entered the venue, I was immediately struck by the warm glow of the stage lights, casting a soft halo around Kristin as she took the stage. Her voice, as always, was pure magic, filling the room with a sense of joy and wonder.

Throughout the evening, Kristin shared stories from her life and career, each one more charming and inspiring than the last. Her humor and grace shone through in every moment, drawing the audience in and creating a sense of intimacy that was truly special.

As the concert came to a close, the applause was thunderous, the energy in the room electric. And as I made my way back out into the city streets, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience of being in the presence of such a talented and radiant performer.

Bright lights, glowy city, and Kristin Chenoweth: a night I will never forget.
