The Thing’s Forgotten Comic Book Adaptations Rescued Kurt Russell’s MacReady

John Carpenter‘s “The Thing” has one of the greatest horror movie endings of all time, but it also baffled audiences upon its initial release. After buckets of body horror and enough suspense to make your blood run cold, Carpenter left the world dangling by a thread, hoping that just like MacReady (Kurt Russell) and Childs (Keith David) in the movie’s final moments, we’d simply wait it out a while and see what happens. Nothing ever did, though, and you know what? For many, it’s why the film’s ending is perfect, leaving us to dread that the titular alien had consumed one or even both of the survivors of Outpost 31. More determined “Thing” fans still needed answers, however, and they actually got them courtesy of the Dark Horse comic book series “The Thing from Another World” (along with the other stories that spawned from it).

Debuting in 1991, “The Thing from Another World

John Carpenter’s 1982 film “The Thing” is a beloved cult classic that has stood the test of time as one of the greatest horror films ever made. However, what many fans may not realize is that this iconic movie was actually based on a comic book adaptation that helped rescue Kurt Russell’s character, MacReady, from obscurity.

The Thing originally debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics in 1982, just a few months before the film’s release. Written by Bill Mantlo and illustrated by Brent Anderson, the comic book adaptation delved deeper into the story of MacReady and the other occupants of Outpost 31 as they battled against the shape-shifting alien creature.

While the film was met with mixed reviews and struggled at the box office, the comic book adaptation was a hit with fans and helped keep MacReady’s character alive in the minds of audiences. The comic book provided additional backstory and character development that was not fully explored in the film, giving fans a deeper understanding of MacReady’s motivations and struggles.

Thanks to the success of the comic book adaptation, Kurt Russell’s portrayal of MacReady became a cult favorite and helped solidify his status as a genre icon. The comic book also helped introduce a new generation of fans to the world of The Thing, ensuring that this timeless tale of paranoia and survival would continue to live on for years to come.

So the next time you watch John Carpenter’s The Thing, take a moment to appreciate the forgotten comic book adaptation that helped rescue Kurt Russell’s MacReady and keep this chilling tale alive for generations of fans to enjoy.

  • Kurt Angle Says He Had a Hard Time Returning To WWE In 2017

Kurt Angle says it wasn’t easy to get back to WWE in 2017 after his run in TNA. The WWE Hall of Famer spoke about making his return to the company during his interview with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, noting that he decided it was time to go back because TNA couldn’t pay what he wanted but that his reputation made him an issue for WWE.

“I could be safe to say that the money was running out [in TNA] and I could see that, and I was making seven figures a year, so they were paying me handsomely,” Angle recalled (per Wrestling Inc). “I figured if they wanted to keep me they would have to pay me another seven figures, and I didn’t think they were going to be able to do that, so that’s when I decided this might be the right time.”

He continued, “I tried to go back to WWE and Vince McMahon said ‘bad reputation,’ because I had four DUIs. That’s when I was making really horrible choices and I had four DUIs, so Vince had me sit and I waited for about a year and a half, two years before they brought me.”

Angle would make his return in 2017 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame, then was appointed the GM of Raw. He wouldn’t return to the ring until TLC 2017.

Kurt Angle, the Olympic gold medalist and WWE Hall of Famer, recently opened up about his struggles with returning to WWE in 2017. Angle, who had been away from the company for over a decade, spoke about the challenges he faced in adjusting to the fast-paced world of professional wrestling once again.

In an interview, Angle revealed that he initially had a difficult time getting back into wrestling shape and had to work tirelessly to regain his in-ring abilities. He also mentioned the pressure he felt to live up to the high expectations of fans and fellow wrestlers.

Despite these challenges, Angle ultimately made a successful return to WWE and even had a memorable run as Raw General Manager. He proved that with hard work and determination, he could overcome any obstacles in his path.

Fans of Angle will always remember his triumphant return to WWE in 2017 and the impact he made during his time back in the squared circle. His story serves as a reminder that even the greatest athletes face struggles, but with perseverance, they can achieve greatness once again.

  • WWE And TNA Legend Kurt Angle Explains His Decision To Retire Early

Some professional wrestlers will try and wrestle well into the years when they should be thinking about pensions rather than wrestling moves, but not Kurt Angle, as he retired from in-ring action in 2019 at the age of 50

Angle had a decorated 21-year career, but what led him to hang up the boots for good was his desire to be remembered fondly by the fans, as he explained during an appearance on “Story Time with Dutch Mantell.”

“[WWE] wouldn’t even have me wrestle, they wouldn’t let me wrestle, I think they thought of me as a liability,” Angle said.

He explained that he thought his run was booked backward as he thought he would wrestle, then become a general manager, and finish in the Hall of Fame, which ended up happening the opposite way around.

“They didn’t have any plans to put a title on me, nothing, and I was wrestling extremely well when I got there, but when I got there and I became the GM for nine months, I was inactive for a whole nine months, never got in the ring. When I eventually got in the ring, I wasn’t the same person, I felt like that I look like an old man wrestling in the ring, that’s how bad it was, and that’s why I retired early, because I didn’t want the fans to remember me as this broken down old man,” revealed the Olympic gold medallist.

Angle also believes that the reason he was booked the way he was in WWE during his final run was due to how he originally left the company in 2006. He stated that when someone leaves a company like WWE in the way that he did, the company, and more specifically Vince McMahon, won’t forget that in a hurry.

After years of dominating the wrestling world in both WWE and TNA, Kurt Angle shocked fans by announcing his decision to retire early from the sport. Many were left wondering why the Olympic gold medalist would hang up his boots so soon. In a recent interview, Angle opened up about his decision and explained his reasons for retiring.

The 52-year-old wrestling legend revealed that his body simply couldn’t keep up with the demands of the sport anymore. Years of hard-hitting matches and intense training had taken a toll on his body, leading to a number of injuries that were starting to affect his quality of life. Angle admitted that he was no longer able to perform at the level that he wanted to, and felt that it was time to step away from the ring before things got worse.

Despite his decision to retire, Angle expressed his gratitude for the opportunities that wrestling had given him and the amazing memories he had created throughout his career. He also reassured fans that he would still be involved in the wrestling world in some capacity, whether it be through coaching or mentoring younger talent.

While fans may be disappointed to see Angle retire, it’s clear that he made the decision with his long-term health and well-being in mind. As one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, Kurt Angle will always be remembered for his incredible skills, dedication, and passion for the sport.

  • WWE Legend Kurt Angle Says He Was Contacted For Royal Rumble Festivities

The annual WWE Royal Rumble is taking place tomorrow in Indianapolis, Indiana, and wrestling fans are undoubtedly aware that there’s a strong chance of some surprise debuts and returns at the event. Though Kurt Angle wrestled his final match nearly six years ago at WWE WrestleMania 35, rumor has it that the promotion is interested in bringing the performer in this weekend. According to a report from Fightful Select, Angle has told people close to him that he was asked to appear at the Royal Rumble, though it’s unclear if Angle has agreed.

It’s also not yet apparent what his appearance would entail, with the report’s sources emphasizing that they didn’t know if he was asked to wrestle in the Royal Rumble itself or if WWE wanted to bring him in for a different segment. Since the end of his in-ring career, Angle has made numerous appearances for WWE, most recently during the 30th anniversary celebration for “Raw” in 2023.

Angle was already scheduled to be in Indianapolis this weekend, as the WrestleCon convention is set to take place there, bringing a long list of current and former wrestlers to the city. In addition to Angle, former WWE stars Matt Cardona, Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, and many more will be in attendance.

Though there is still apparently at least the possibility of an in-ring return this weekend, Angle has been vocal about his physical struggles following the end of his wrestling career, including surgeries on his knees and neck. An appearance in the Royal Rumble could be short and wouldn’t require too much work, but it would still force Angle to be thrown over the top rope, presuming he doesn’t win the match.
