  • Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek doping cases ‘disgusting’ for tennis – Nick Kyrgios

Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek doping cases ‘disgusting’ for tennis – Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios says the high-profile doping cases involving Grand Slam winners Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek are “disgusting” for tennis.

Italian men’s world number one Sinner still faces the threat of a possible suspension after he twice tested positive for an anabolic steroid in March.

Swiatek, also 23, served a one-month suspension after testing positive for a banned heart medication in August, when the Pole was women’s world number one.

“I just think that it’s been handled horrifically in our sport,” said Australian Kyrgios, 29.

“Two world number ones both getting done for doping is disgusting for our sport.

    “It’s a horrible look.”

Kyrgios is preparing to make his return to competitive action at the Brisbane International, following an 18-month injury-enforced absence since contesting the Stuttgart Open in June 2023.

In that time, the sport’s leading players in both the men’s and women’s games have become involved in controversy over respective failed tests.

While the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) cleared Sinner of wrongdoing after he twice tested positive for clostebol, the case was taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) after the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) launched an appeal.

Swiatek accepted a one-month ban, which ended on 4 December, after the ITIA accepted her positive test for trimetazidine (TMZ) was caused by contamination of the regulated non-prescription medication melatonin.

The treatment of those two players has led to accusations of double standards, with two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep saying there were “completely different approaches” to those cases compared to her own.

However the ITIA strongly denies handling these cases any differently.

Kyrgios said: “The tennis integrity right now, and everyone knows it but no one wants to speak about it, is awful.

“It’s not okay. I know that people don’t like when I just speak out about things, be honest about things.”

In addition to making his singles return against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Kyrgios is set to partner Novak Djokovic – chasing his 100th Tour-level title in Brisbane – in the men’s doubles competition.

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has spoken out against the recent doping cases involving rising stars Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, calling them ‘disgusting’ for the sport of tennis.

In a recent post on social media, Kyrgios expressed his disappointment and frustration over the news of the two young players testing positive for banned substances.

“Doping has no place in tennis or any sport for that matter. It’s a betrayal of the values and principles that we hold dear in our sport,” Kyrgios wrote. “To see two promising young players like Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek involved in doping cases is truly disgusting and disheartening.”

Kyrgios urged tennis authorities to take strong action against players who cheat by using performance-enhancing drugs, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity and fairness of the sport.

“We need to send a clear message that doping will not be tolerated in tennis. It’s not fair to the players who compete clean and work hard to achieve success,” Kyrgios added.

The outspoken Australian player called on his fellow athletes to stay vigilant and report any suspicions of doping within the tennis community.

“We must all do our part to protect the integrity of our sport and ensure that doping has no place in tennis. Let’s stand together against this kind of cheating and uphold the values of fair play and sportsmanship,” Kyrgios concluded.

  • Nick Kyrgios slams Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek for doping-related issues ahead of Brisbane comeback

“I (pay) my team hundreds and thousands of dollars to be the professionals they are, to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Kyrgios said. “So they knew it happened. Why did they wait five to six months to do anything about it? He kept his team for five months … that doesn’t make sense.”

Kyrgios will take on 21-year-old Giovanni Perricard of France in the first round in Brisbane.

It will be the first tour-level appearance by Kyrgios since the Stuttgart Open in June 2023. Kyrgios has been mostly sidelined with career-threatening wrist and knee injuries since the 2022 U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Kyrgios is also entered in the Australian Open beginning Jan. 12. It would be his first Grand Slam singles tournament in more than two years.

Kyrgios, who won the Brisbane International in 2018, will partner Novak Djokovic in doubles in Brisbane. Djokovic beat Kyrgios in the 2022 Wimbledon singles final.

Djokovic is the No. 1-seeded player at the Brisbane International and will play Australia’s Rinky Hijikata in the opening round following the singles draw held Saturday.

Kyrgios and Djokovic are in the top half of the singles draw and are not slated to play each other until the semifinals should they both win through.

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has taken aim at rising stars Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, accusing them of doping-related issues ahead of his comeback at the Brisbane International.

In a scathing post on social media, Kyrgios slammed the young players for their alleged involvement in doping, calling them out for tarnishing the sport of tennis. Kyrgios, known for his outspoken nature, did not hold back in his criticism of Sinner and Swiatek, labeling them as “cheats” and questioning their integrity.

The accusations come as Kyrgios prepares to make his return to competitive tennis after a lengthy absence. The Australian has been sidelined with injury and personal issues, but is set to make his comeback at the Brisbane International.

Kyrgios has always been a controversial figure in the world of tennis, but his latest comments have sparked a heated debate among fans and players alike. While some have supported his outspoken stance against doping in the sport, others have criticized him for making unsubstantiated claims without evidence.

As Kyrgios gears up for his return to the court, it remains to be seen how his comments will impact his relationships with fellow players and the tennis community as a whole. One thing is for certain – the Australian is not afraid to speak his mind, no matter the consequences.

  • Alex de Minaur using United Cup as springboard for successful 2025, excited for Nick Kyrgios return

Alex de Minaur using United Cup as springboard for successful 2025, excited for Nick Kyrgios return

Alex de Minaur says it is “super exciting” to have Nick Krygios back in action, and expects him to be the centre of attention in both Brisbane and Melbourne over the next month.

De Minaur, who will compete for Australia in the United Cup team competition in Sydney from January 28, said he was looking forward to having Kyrgios back on court.

“I think it’s super exciting for Australian fans to have him back,” the 25-year-old de Minaur told reporters in Sydney.

“I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of eyeballs on him getting started in Brisbane.

“It’s great to have Australian tennis going out so strongly and showing that we are a very strong force to be reckoned with.”

Kyrgios has played just one match on the ATP Tour since the 2022 US Open quarterfinals due to career-threatening wrist and knee injuries.

In the 15 months since surgery, Kyrgios has frequently toyed with giving up the sport, only to make a return ahead of this year’s Australian Open at the Brisbane International, and qualified for the Australian Open using a protected ranking from prior to his injury.

In his absence, De Minaur has been going from strength-to-strength, ending the year a career-high ninth in the world despite dealing with a debilitating hip injury that hampered him throughout the ATP Finals, and saw him forced to withdraw from Wimbledon.

De Minaur won two tournaments in 2024, on grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch and on the hard courts of Acapulco, reached a career high ranking of sixth in the world and knocked over a number of the world’s top 10 players on the way, including Novak Djokovic at last year’s United Cup.

The Sydneysider noted there was little time to enjoy his accomplishments: “This old tennis world, there’s not a lot of time to unwind,” he said with a grin.

But he did say he was able to reflect on what had been a superb season, while targeting more in 2025.

“I have enjoyed the moment, I’ve done my best to relish the achievements we’ve had this year,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of highs and a lot of lows, with the injuries.

“More than anything it’s just given me a lot of hunger to build for better things.

“This whole preseason I’ve been motivated because I want more. I want to keep pushing myself and hopefully I can accomplish that this year.”

Now, mercifully injury free, De Minaur said he was looking forward to competing in Sydney.

“I’m feeling great. It was a tough year dealing with that [groin injury],” he said.

“I’m glad to finally put it on the backburner and forget about it.

“I’ve felt very good in this off-season, we’ve put in a lot of good work, the body is feeling very comfortable.”

De Minaur will take on Argentina, featuring world number 39 Tomás Martín Etcheverry, and Great Britain in Group F.

Given De Minaur’s long-term partner Katie Boulter will suit up for Britain, the match up is not necessarily ideal for the Australian: “Not my ideal kind of interesting,” he said of the draw with a smile.

But personal relationships aside, De Minaur said the one-week tournament was perfect preparation for the Australian Open — and the entire year ahead.

“I think it was extremely important,” De Minaur said of Australia’s run to the quarterfinal last year.

“I think I was able to use the confidence that I gathered in the first week of the year and basically had my best year to date, so obviously it was a very important week for me,” he said.

“It’s great coming at the start of the year and basically tuning right from the start.

“I’ve been blessed with playing some of the best players in the world at the start of the year, and it is the perfect way to get ready for the Australian Open and seeing where your level’s at.”

De Minaur has reached the fourth round at the Australian Open but, given he made the quarterfinals of the other three slams this year and unwilling to detail any firm targets for 2025, he has set his sights higher this summer.

“Keep improving,” De Minaur said of his main goal.

“Going deep in the slams, playing the best guys in the world, trying to almost every week.

“I’ve had a taste for it this year and now it’s about tweaking a couple of things and now it’s about doing that on a almost weekly basis.

“I learnt a lot about myself, how to overcome certain situations when I haven’t been feeling my best, physically, I’ve learnt a lot about my competitive nature and of course, I learned what I need to do against the best players in the world.

“It’s always going to be really tough but it’s about taking it to them and not being afraid of the battle.”

Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur is using his recent success at the United Cup as a springboard for a successful 2025 season. De Minaur, who led Team Australia to victory at the prestigious tournament, is feeling confident and motivated heading into the new year.

“I couldn’t be happier with how I performed at the United Cup,” de Minaur said. “It was a great opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the world and to come out on top with my teammates was truly special. I’m feeling really good about my game right now and I’m excited to see what I can achieve in 2025.”

One player de Minaur is especially looking forward to competing against is his fellow Australian, Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios, who has been sidelined with injury for the past few months, is set to make his return to the court in the coming weeks, and de Minaur is eager to face off against his friend and compatriot.

“Nick is a great player and a great guy, and it’s always fun to compete against him,” de Minaur said. “I know he’s been working hard to get back to full fitness, and I can’t wait to see him back out there on the court. It’s going to be a great challenge and I’m looking forward to it.”

With his confidence riding high and a strong start to the year under his belt, de Minaur is poised for a successful 2025 season. Keep an eye on this rising star as he looks to make his mark on the tennis world.
