Lacey Chabert Talks About Giving The Rom-Com A New, Modern Spin In ‘An Unexpected Valentine’
Lacey Chabert knows a thing or two about the rom-com genre. As she should, given that she has starred in over 40 of them for Hallmark Channel alone. So it makes sense that she is at the helm of a brand-new original movie that celebrates the most romantic day of all.
The Mississippi native stars opposite another Hallmark veteran, Robert Buckley in An Unexpected Valentine. Chabert said that she was drawn to this story because it is something different, or shall we say, unexpected.
“I hadn’t made a Valentine’s movie in a minute and I fell in love with the script. I love the idea that it takes place in one night. Which is an interesting way to film. Only one costume for the entire movie which was such a treat,” she told Southern Living.
Chabert plays Hannah who is rushing around the city, keeping busy with work and keeping her mind off the fact that it’s Valentine’s Day. She hops into a ride share for a quick ride that ends up changing the trajectory of her day and perhaps her life.
“She finds an engagement ring and partners up with the driver of the car to find the owner of the ring because it’s Valentine’s night and of course, there was a special purpose for this ring. And in the course of trying to find the owner, they find themselves on this very unexpected adventure. Get to know each other, they have some laughs. They almost get into a little bit of trouble,” Chabert described.
Finn, the driver, is played by Buckley and the chemistry between the two is evident immediately. As Chabert put it, “there is something about being in the car where it’s very disarming. And they find themselves opening up in a way that is, again, very unexpected.”

Unlike many of the other feel-good films we see on this network, the spark between these two characters isn’t built over baking cookies or at a holiday festival in the center of a small town. This movie largely takes place in the car as Hannah and Finn are searching the city for the ring’s rightful owner.
The story and the pace in which it is told, relies heavily on the interactions between Chabert and Buckley. The pair master the quick-witted banter and evoke the nostalgia of that golden age of Hollywood rom-coms—you know, the ones starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.
“I think when we’re having fun on set, which is almost always, it really translates, especially in a movie like this. And I was really happy that they gave us the freedom to ad lib. We had a wonderful script and when there were times and moments that were unexpected, those were also really fun to play. And I just love these types of rom-coms. I love these types of love stories. It’s about people connecting and I think sometimes when it’s not forced and you aren’t expecting it, that’s when the magic sometimes happens,” Chabert said.
She also gave credit to her co-star. “Robert Buckley was wonderful to work with. So talented. So funny. And he was a wonderful scene partner. We had a blast.”
An Unexpected Valentine premieres on Hallmark Channels on February 1, but that’s not the only thing Chabert is celebrating this week. Earlier in the week, Hallmark announced that there will be a second season of Chabert’s first unscripted series, Celebrations.
“We are underway into production now. We just did our first celebration and the heroes that we will be honoring are just the most incredible people and the way that they are making a difference in their communities is just so incredibly inspiring and touching. I just love it,” Chabert told us.
Each episode, Chabert and her professional party planner pals, Lisa Friedman and Marisa Lainer, select someone who selflessly serves their community in some way to celebrate. They conspire with the hero’s friends and family and plan the ultimate surprise party with a different, unique theme, catered to each recipient’s personal style and interests.
In the first season Chabert was all in and hands on creating the perfect parties with themes from “Barn Bat Mitzvah” to a tea party, and even a red carpet gala. Chabert told us she definitely picked up some ideas for the celebrations she plans in her own life. And it appears that has also led to another new venture.
“I’m so excited about this. I love celebrating every holiday. I have a line coming out with Hallmark this holiday season,” Chabert excitedly told us. The collection will include everything you need to host the perfect holiday soirée including gift wrap, glassware, and serving pieces.
“Everything is inspired by the Hallmark archives. Many of the designs are inspired by the 1950s prints. The designers did an incredible job and I really feel like it represents my style. There’ s a whimsical aspect to it, something vintage, but it’s also updated with pops of color. It’s really elegant and really fun.”

Lacey Chabert’s Massive New Hallmark Deal Includes Product Line
Days before starring in her 41st Hallmark Channel movie, “An Unexpected Valentine,” Lacey Chabert has cemented her status as the Queen of Hallmark.
On January 29, 2025, the corporation announced that the actress has signed an over-arching deal that includes new movies, her first-ever product line with Hallmark Cards, and a second season of her 2024 unscripted series, “Celebrations With Lacey Chabert.”
Lacey Chabert’s New Hallmark Partnership Includes ‘Extending Her Multi-Picture Deal’
Chabert whose first Hallmark movie was 2011’s “Elevator Girl,” has been a perennial favorite among Hallmark fans over the years, including starring in over a dozen popular Christmas movies. In 2024, she surprised fans by also starring in a holiday movie on Netflix, the instant hit “Hot Frosty,” but her new deal guarantees she’ll have a major presence at Hallmark for the foreseeable future.
In addition to the upcoming “An Unexpected Valentine” co-starring Robert Buckley, Hallmark said in its press announcement that Chabert’s new arrangement includes “extending her multi-picture movie deal, where she will star in, develop, and produce Hallmark film projects into 2025 and beyond.”
Her unscripted Hallmark+ series “Celebrations With Lacey Chabert” will also return for a second season, in 2025. In eight new episodes, Chabert and her party planning team — L.A.-based event planners Lisa Friedman and Marisa Lainer — will continue to surprise individuals who’ve been “chosen for their extraordinary efforts to uplift those around them,” per Hallmark.
As in the first season, each everyday hero will be “treated to fabulous, one-of-a-kind celebrations designed to honor their impact in a deeply meaningful way.” It’s not clear if the series will continue to focus on recipients near L.A. Before the series premiere in September, she told Southern Living that she hoped to branch out if the show got renewed.
“We have so many ideas of different places we could go and different types of parties we could throw and I hope we have the chance to tell other people’s stories,” she said.

Lacey Chabert will have her first-ever product line with Hallmark Cards in 2025 On top of continuing her Hallmark movies and series, Chabert, 42, will also launch her first-ever product line with Hallmark Media’s parent company, Hallmark Cards, in 2025.
Building on her love of party planning, the Lacey Chabert Collection will include “holiday must-haves” such as greeting cards, gift wrap and “unique entertaining essentials” that Hallmark said will be available later this year and be “inspired by vintage Hallmark designs.”
After the holiday season, Chabert’s product line will extend into 2026 with “everyday products that help people create joyful memories year-round,” available exclusively at Hallmark Gold Crown Stores.
In a statement, Chabert said, “Ever since I was a little girl, I have sincerely loved the universally positive experience of shopping at a Hallmark store, so to be able to work on this collection that will allow other people and their families to create memories of their own has been such a treat and full circle for me.”

One of Hallmark’s favorite actresses, Lacey Chabert, steps away from the scripts in her new series, “Celebrations with Lacey Chabert.” Besides hosting this series, she is also the executive producer of this 10-episode series on Hallmark+.
Chabert has starred in 38 Hallmark movies and is still working hard at creating dramatic content for the network. In “Celebrations with Lacey Chabert,” she celebrates the accomplishments of people in the community who have made an impact in some way or another.
Through each episode, Chabert is joined by her friends to honor everyday heroes who have no idea they are heroes, and have no idea they are about to be surprised with a celebration just for them.

The actress considers Hallmark her home and has stayed with the network for many years because of the warm feeling she has there. Hallmark has afforded her many opportunities, not least of which is this new series, which she is extremely excited about and proud to bring to the viewers.
Chabert explained, ” I learned as much as I could about the person and their story. And, honestly, most of it is live and on the job because you end up talking to their family members or co-workers or people there that they’ve affected their lives for the better, and they tell you so much about them. And then, you find out so much about this person. And then, finally, with the help of these incredible party planners, Lisa and Marissa, we throw them a huge surprise celebration at the end.”
“I’ve always wanted to do a show that I get to throw these amazing parties because it’s something I love doing in real life, and let’s do it for deserving kids. … And then, here we are. We’ve actually gotten to make that show. And it’s just such a blessing. And I just love that we are all able to creatively have a voice and help bring these things to life. And it’s really just been an incredible journey.”
Viewers will be inspired by the everyday heroes honored in “Celebrations.” It is an uplifting show that in today’s world of difficult times shares the unselfish acts of others.

As someone who played a high schooler at 22 years old, Lacey Chabert knows a thing or two about staying young at heart.
“I think age is just a number,” the Mean Girls star, 42, tells PEOPLE while discussing her new campaign with Philosophy, a skincare brand she credits for her youthful complexion. “Staying young at heart for me is about finding joy in any situation and connecting with people in life. It’s part of the reason I think I enjoy being a storyteller and making movies because I love connecting with people through story.”
Now, Chabert is using her passion for storytelling to tell the ultimate love story, that of a woman and her skincare. In her new campaign, inspired by rom-com movie trailers, Chabert plays the big-city girl who returns to her hometown and realizes the one she’s been searching for has been right in front of her all along—Philosophy’s purity one-step facial cleanser.

“My mom, sisters and I have been philosophy fans for so many years, and I was really excited about this opportunity because I love skincare,” Chabert says about why she signed on to front the campaign. “Being on camera I wear a lot of makeup and my skin goes through a lot, so I’m always searching for the perfect product that takes care of my skin. I love the purity cleanser because it has the capability where it’s strong enough to take off all of the makeup that I wear on camera, but yet it’s gentle on my skin.”
Chabert adds that being in front of the camera since she was seven years old has taught her the importance of taking care of her skin.
“Obviously I wasn’t using a lot of products as a kid or a teenager, but in my early twenties, I really started to be aware of wearing sunscreen and doing things to protect my skin and to try and take as good care of it as I can,” she says.
Partnering with Philosophy was an easy decision for Chabert, especially since it gave her a chance to tap into her Hallmark roots for the romantic trailer. “I love rom-coms because they bring joy and often have relatable storylines that I feel like people can see themselves in,” she says. “So I thought this was a really clever way to advertise the line.”

As she gears up for her 41st Hallmark film, An Unexpected Valentine, premiering on Feb. 1 on the Hallmark Channel, Chabert shares that she and costar Robert Buckley “learn about each other, let our guards down a bit, have some fun and romance might prevail.”
“He’s hilarious and so kind and he comes to work with the best attitude,” Chabert says of Buckley, 43, with whom she embarks on a mission to find the owner of a lost engagement ring on Valentine’s Day. “We’re both parents. We were talking about our kids and FaceTiming with our families and just really hit it off from the beginning. We just had the best time.”

Looking ahead to future projects, Chabert shares there’s one type of film she’s eager to make and one former costar she hopes to reunite with. “I’m from Mississippi and I haven’t gotten to do a movie about the South. I would love to do a southern based movie,” she tells PEOPLE. “And I will say the first person that pops into my head for who I would want to work with is Jennifer Garner. She and I worked together on Ghost of Girlfriends Past many years ago, and it was such a dream to work with her. She’s just so lovely and I love following her on social media.”

The renewal of the unscripted series Celebrations with Lacey Chabert is set to premiere later this year on Hallmark+. Returning to the show for Season 2 are Lacey Chabert (Mean Girls, Haul Out the Holly) alongside her talented party planning team Lisa Friedman and Marisa Lainer. In season 2, the series will continue to spotlight deserving community members with surprise celebrations in recognition of their incredible contributions.
