Marvel Rivals players have issued advice for those struggling to climb the ranked ladder, and while it may sound like common sense to some, it’s an important tip to note.
Ranked in Marvel Rivals can be a hell of a grind, particularly following the seven-tier drop at the start of season one, and a bad streak can quickly derail your climb—but taking on one piece of advice from the community may help.
In a post on Reddit, players were advised not to select a character they have no experience with simply because a teammate asked for them to activate a team-up ability–and this single piece of advice could help you in a slump.
It’s no secret that there are top-tier team-ups to utilize, including the trio of Doctor Strange, the Hulk, and Iron Man, but choosing a character you have little to no experience with is not the way to go about it. Instead, stick with someone you know.
Although the right team-up can be a game-changer, sticking with a hero you know and playing them well is always better than choosing a character you are not comfortable with and having a mid game—so don’t give into peer pressure. As someone said, team-ups aren’t worth handicapping your team.
The post attracted over 3,000 upvotes and over 450 comments, full of good tips. While playing someone you don’t know in ranked isn’t ideal, it’s a good idea to be familiar with a few characters so that you can switch when required—but you should do this in Quick Play.
It’s also worth learning different roles and characters, enabling you to switch to Vanguard from Support, for example, if the team composition calls for it. Again, though, don’t do this in ranked mode.
I’d also highly recommend learning a character in the vs. AI mode. While it won’t challenge your skills too much, it will allow you to learn the abilities and cooldowns in an environment that isn’t anywhere near as stressful.
I’ll also throw another tip into the mix: don’t pick a character just because you’ve seen someone else play them well. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, so yours may be vastly different from whoever you saw shine.
Finally, another tip is not to play ranked while tilted. Take a break if you’re getting frustrated and on a loss streak! Nothing good ever comes out of playing full of rage, and it can do significant damage to your placement.

Kia Rookie Ladder: Stephon Castle, Jaylen Wells take hold of Top 2 spots
Stephon Castle played well in the NBA Paris Games to spur his rise to No. 1 in the Kia Rookie Ladder.
Eight of the 10 players on this week’s Ladder were chosen to compete in the Castrol Rising Stars event at All-Star Weekend. The other two in the official rookies pool have made multiple appearances here: Philadelphia’s Jared McCain (injured) and the Lakers’ Dalton Knecht.
A breakdown of the 10 rookies reveals five lottery picks and five prospects selected later, including lone second-rounder Jaylen Wells. A sixth lottery pick, Houston’s Reed Sheppard (No. 3 overall), got his invitation to the event as a member of the NBA G League group despite appearing in only three games for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

It’s a throwback role to the NBA of the 1980s and 90s, but Ja Morant revived it when talking with reporters about Grizzlies center Zach Edey.

Movement was limited this week on the Kia Rookie Ladder, with Stephon Castle climbing a spot, No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher slipping a couple and Portland’s Donovan Clingan returning with some heavy work on the boards.
Washington’s Alexandre Sarr hung onto the top spot for a second week with highlights at both ends. The 7-footer from Bordeaux, France, ranks fourth in points, second in rebounds, fifth in assists, second in blocked shots and 10th in steals among rookies.

• Sarr and fellow Washington rookies Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George have combined to play 1,898 minutes, way out in front of any other team’s group of newbies. The Wizards are only the seventh team since 1997-98 to deploy three or more rookies at least 25 minutes or more per game.
• Yves Missi is no one-off, as far as hoops skills in his household. His parents played for Cameroon’s national men’s and women’s teams. His brother Steve Mondou-Missi played at Harvard a decade ago. Said Sheppard: “The biggest thing was just getting my confidence back, going down and being able to get up and down the court. Kind of play free, play loose, really, just play the game of basketball and enjoy it.”
Storyline to watch
No spell stops the wall. The Wizards’ rookie crew has already been feeling the effects of NBA scheduling, and it soon dials up further still. After facing Phoenix on Thursday, Washington hits the road for six games against the West in 10 nights. The Wizards return home for a back-to-back, then head out again to open February with three more on the road. And Carrington already said: “I’ve never played this [many] games, never played this [many] minutes as well. So it’s definitely taken a toll.”
