  • Kendrick Lamar halftime, SZA, more

Super Bowl LIX is shaping up to be one for the books.

Kendrick Lamar was announced as the halftime headliner for Feb. 9’s game back in September. On Thursday, official halftime show sponsor Apple Music revealed via a cheeky teaser trailer for the performance that Grammy winner and frequent Lamar collaborator SZA will join the rapper on stage at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome.

In the clip, Lamar paces around a greyscale football field, idly chatting on the phone with a friend. “This field a lot bigger than what it looks,” he remarks. Unbeknownst to the Compton-born musician, SZA creeps up behind him, shouldering a sloshing watercooler. She then dumps the sparkling blue, Gatorade-like contents of the cooler onto Lamar with a mischievous grin.

This is Lamar’s first time headlining a Super Bowl halftime show, but it isn’t his first time performing in one. He appeared as a special guest during Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre‘s 2022 West Coast-themed Super Bowl spectacle. He and SZA also aren’t the only announced performers.

The NFL has tapped four Louisiana natives to fill out the night’s festivities: jazz singer and multi-instrumentalist Jon Batiste will perform the national anthem; Christian singer Lauren Daigle and jazz musician Trombone Shorty will perform “America the Beautiful”; and R&B legend Ledisi will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

There are likely plenty of surprise guests to come, but for now, here’s the full slate of announced performers set for the 2025 Super Bowl.

Kendrick Lamar had one of the biggest years of his career in 2024. He achieved a resounding victory over Drake in one of the most vicious rap battles in the genre’s history, released a song that stayed at the top of the charts for months and that’s now led him to multiple Grammy nominations, and he released his sixth critically-acclaimed album, GNX, in November. Headlining the Super Bowl halftime show is as much an auspicious start to the new year as it is a victory lap for the decorated rapper and musician.

“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date,” Lamar said in a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly in September. “And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”

In a video coinciding with the Sept. announcement, Lamar stands before a massive American flag, feeding footballs into a throwing machine. “My name is Kendrick Lamar, and I’ll be performing at Super Bowl LIX. Will you be pulling up? I hope so,” he says to camera.

If Kendrick had a stellar year, SZA’s 2024 was super-galactic. The St. Louis-born musician born Solána Imani Rowe spent the year touring her acclaimed, Grammy-winning album SOS, which won her three Grammys. She released the deluxe version of that album, titled Lana, complete with a music video starring Ben Stiller. She also geared up for her acting debut in the Issa Rae-penned, Keke Palmer-costarring One of Them Days, which took the No. 2 spot at the MLK weekend domestic box office.

She and Kendrick also maximized their joint slay threefold, collaborating on three songs across their respective new albums (“gloria,” “luther,” and “30 for 30”), announcing the joint-headlining “Grand National Tour,” and, in February, taking the Super Bowl by storm together.

Another Super Bowl performer plucked straight from the 2024 Grammys (six nominations, but sadly no wins), Jon Batiste has been selected for the distinguished honor of performing the national anthem at Super Bowl LIX. Batiste succeeds American sweetheart, The Voice coach, and noted survivor Reba McEntire , who sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at last year’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas.

Batiste was born and raised in New Orleans, and belongs to a locally-revered family of jazz greats, including Milton Batiste, a former trumpeter in the Olympia Brass Band, and Lionel Batiste, the former assistant leader of the Treme Brass Band. His first album, released when he was only 17, is called Times in New Orleans. Batiste launched his first solo concert tour in 2024, dubbed “The Uneasy Tour.” His Super Bowl performance will be accompanied in American Sign Language (ASL) by the actress Stephanie Nogueras.

Like Batiste, R&B mainstay and Grammy-winning singer Ledisi was born and raised in New Orleans. She also hails from an influential family in the local jazz scene, and began singing in the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra when she was only eight. She’s gone on to release 11 albums, win major industry awards, tour the world with her band, and earn her spot as one of the greatest vocalists in the history of the genre, alongside Patti Labelle, with whom she starred in the documentary American Soul, and Mahalia Jackson, who she’s appeared on screen as twice, in Ava DuVernay’s Selma and Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story.

Ledisi has been tapped by the NFL to perform the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Colloquially known as the “Black national anthem,” the song was written by author and NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson in 1900, but was taken up as a rallying cry during the Civil Rights movement.

Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews is another New Orleans native. The world-touring trombonist has been performing since the age of four when he made his debut at the city’s annual Jazz Fest accompanying Bo Diddley. Shorty attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts with Batiste. The two will reunite at Super Bowl LIX, but Shorty is performing with the Christian recording artist Lauren Daigle, who will sing “America the Beautiful.”

Lauren Daigle is the final Louisianian in the announced group of Super Bowl LIX performers. Born in Lake Charles and raised in Lafayette, Daigle rose to prominence in 2015, when her debut album, How Can It Be, topped Billboard’s Christian albums chart. She’s since become one of the most successful contemporary Christian recording artists in America, with two Grammy awards. She will sing “America the Beautiful” during the Super Bowl pregame lineup, accompanied by Trombone Shorty.

Super Bowl LIX airs on Sunday, Feb. 9 on Fox and streams on Fubo and the Fox Sports app. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, with the halftime show likely to begin between 8 and 8:30 p.m. ET.

Willy Chavarria takes no days off. Just as the press was beginning to settle on his brilliant Paris Fashion Week debut, the Mexican-American designer gave the industry another reason to publish his name in bold text: an upcoming ready-to-wear collaboration with Kendrick Lamar tied to his upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance.

The duo, who first connected two years ago when the GNX rapper sported Chavarria’s designs on his Big Steppers Tour, has crafted a limited-edition collection of fan-inspired gear to celebrate the monumental show. Notably, the collaboration is a three-way partnership between the NFL, Lamar’s pgLang label and Chavarria.

Elsewhere, the collection houses lightweight practice jerseys and drawstring mesh shorts, as well as Super Bowl LIX hoodies and T-shirts with Felipe Merida-designed graphics featuring Lamar’s “tv off” lyrics — “Foot Up On The Gas But Somebody Gotta Do It” — on the body.

The Willy Chavarria x Kendrick Lamar collection will become available to shop online on Wednesday, January 29. Proceeds from the collection will be donated to organizations and individuals impacted by the Los Angeles fires. Prices will range from $55 USD to $750 USD. • Kendrick Lamar Felt Like ‘Goku’ Recording ‘Hey Now,’ Says Mustard

Kendrick Lamar went Super Saiyan on his GNX album as Mustard revealed that K. Dot channeled his inner-Goku while recording “Hey Now.”

Mustard caught up with the Recording Academy earlier this week ahead of the Grammy Awards, where he opened up about some of his conversations with Lamar surrounding GNX, who took things to Dragon Ball Z.

“I had heard ‘Hey Now’ during the ‘Not Like Us’ video shoot; he played me a snippet. I asked him, ‘Man, what made you do that,” Mustard recalled asking Lamar. “And he said, ‘When I heard the beat, I just felt like Goku or something.’ I was like, ‘What?’ And he explained, ‘Yeah, when I hear certain s— on your beats, it brings out something else in me, so I just did whatever I felt.’ I was like, ‘Wow, that’s crazy.’”

“Hey Now” features fellow L.A. rapper Dody6 and serves as one of the album’s highlights with a snarling Kendrick at the helm having fun on the mic while powering up like Goku. The Mustard-produced track ended up reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In a separate interview with People, Mustard revealed that plenty of stars previously passed on the “Hey Now” beat, including close friends Ty Dolla $ign, YG and Quavo. The producer explained he was trying to make a “West Coast version of [Clipse’s] ‘Grindin.’”

“That’s why it’s so empty like that. That’s why it’s just weird sounds,” he explained. “[YG] didn’t end up doing it … I played it for Quavo, and I’m like, ‘Quavo man, if you get this if you can connect to this song, I’m telling you,’ he’s like, ‘What the hell you want me to do to it? You want me to whisper on the beat?’ And I’m like, ‘Alright.’ So I didn’t force it on him.”

Mustard is up for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical at the 2025 Grammy Awards, while K.Dot boasts seven nominations in total ahead of Sunday’s show (Feb. 2).

In a recent interview, producer Mustard revealed that Kendrick Lamar felt like ‘Goku’ while recording their collaboration track ‘Hey Now.’ The song, which was released in 2014, showcases Lamar’s incredible lyrical abilities and unique flow.

Mustard explained that Lamar approached the recording session with an intense focus and energy, comparing the rapper to the powerful and determined character Goku from the popular anime series Dragon Ball Z. Lamar’s passion and dedication to his craft were evident throughout the recording process, and his performance on ‘Hey Now’ is a testament to his talent and skill as a musician.

Fans of Kendrick Lamar and Mustard’s work will undoubtedly appreciate the insight into the creative process behind ‘Hey Now,’ and the comparison to Goku only adds to the mystique and allure of Lamar’s artistry. With his unparalleled talent and dedication, Lamar continues to solidify his status as one of the greatest artists of our time.

  • Kendrick Lamar Shares How He Felt Making “hey now”

Kendrick Lamar channeled his inner Goku when he first heard Mustard’s beat for “Hey Now,” one of the standout tracks from his surprise sixth studio album, GNX. On Monday (January 27), the West Coast producer reflected on Lamar’s energetic response to the beat during an interview with the Grammy Awards.

“He played me a snippet before it dropped,” Mustard revealed, recalling how Lamar shared the track during the “Not Like Us” video shoot. “I asked him, ‘Man, what made you do that?’ And he told me, ‘When I heard the beat, I just felt like Goku or something.’” For those unfamiliar, Goku is the central hero of the legendary Dragon Ball manga series.

Mustard admitted he was caught off guard by the comparison. “I was like, ‘What?’ And Kendrick explained, ‘Yeah, when I hear certain stuff in your beats, it brings out something different in me. So I just went with what I felt.’ I thought, ‘Wow, that’s wild.’”

Both Mustard and Lamar are primed for success at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. “Not Like Us” has racked up nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Song. Mustard is also vying for Producer of the Year (Non-Classical). Other highlights from GNX include the SZA-assisted “Luther,” the hard-hitting “Squabble Up,” and “TV Off,” a track widely regarded as one of Lamar’s finest moments on the album. The latter features a memorable shoutout to Mustard, an intense outro by Lefty Gunplay, and a production style that seamlessly balances chaos and creativity.

During the interview, Mustard shared an intriguing detail about “TV Off.” The track’s dramatic beat switch, which divides the song into two distinct sections, was Kendrick’s brainchild. “The first half and the second half are two completely different beats that he connected,” Mustard explained. “I didn’t send it to him like that. Out of five beats I sent, he picked two and made it work.”

With GNX, Kendrick Lamar continues to prove why he’s one of hip-hop’s most innovative artists. His collaboration with Mustard is yet another example of how he pushes boundaries, crafting music that resonates both emotionally and sonically. As fans eagerly await the Grammy results, it’s clear that Lamar and Mustard’s creative synergy has delivered another unforgettable chapter in their respective legacies.

Kendrick Lamar recently opened up about his experience creating his hit song “hey now” and shared how he felt during the process. The acclaimed rapper revealed that he was in a very reflective and introspective state while writing the lyrics for the track.

Lamar explained that “hey now” was a very personal song for him, as it delved into his own struggles and innermost thoughts. He wanted to convey a sense of vulnerability and honesty in the lyrics, which is why he poured his heart and soul into the writing process.

The Grammy-winning artist also mentioned that the production of the song played a significant role in capturing the mood and emotion he wanted to convey. The haunting melody and atmospheric beats helped to create a sense of introspection and contemplation that resonated with listeners.

Overall, Kendrick Lamar revealed that making “hey now” was a cathartic experience for him, allowing him to express his emotions and connect with his audience on a deep level. The song has since become a fan favorite and a standout track in his discography.

  • Kai Cenat Says Kendrick Lamar Destroyed Drake In Rap Beef

Kai Cenat might be cool with Drake, but he is well aware that Kendrick Lamar came out on top in their scathing rap beef. On Monday (Jan. 27), the live streamer told Billboard that watching them trade diss tracks was the “most fun experience” he has ever had.

“We never experienced something like that,” Cenat told the publication. “It was a good week. Everybody had their opinions. I was literally hopping on stream and had like 60,000 viewers. As soon as they dropped, my s**t spiked to like 100,000.” Across his YouTube channel, the New York native pulled in a massive 30 million views by simply reacting to records like “euphoria,” “Family Matters,” and arguably the most popular from the feud, “Not Like Us.”

When asked who took the crown in their high-profile exchange, Cenat surprisingly sided with the Compton MC. He explained, “I’m cool with Drake. So, people would expect me to be on Drake’s side, but I’m not going to lie, Kendrick won that battle.”

He added, “It was good. I loved every second of it. I was just appreciating the moment. Like, bro, we got bangers right now that [are] dropping back-to-back, and everybody’s talking about them. It was definitely fire.” As Billboard notes, Drake reportedly blocked the streamer after his less-than-positive reaction to “THE HEART PART 6,” the last song to come out of their beef.

Earlier in the month, Cenat was among the many YouTubers named in Drake’s defamation suit against Universal Music Group. The Canadian star accused the record company of “whitelisting” Lamar’s “Not Like Us” so it could ultimately spread even further.

“What the f**k?! I’m getting sued? I was told to stay on stream! That n**gga is cap,” the Streamer of the Year winner said before quickly recognizing he wasn’t actually the one being indicted: “Oh, I’m good! So, he’s just using us as an example of [people who were] spreading misinformation type s**t? I mean, if I’m not getting sued, n**ga …”

In a recent interview with XXL Magazine, rising hip-hop artist Kai Cenat made a bold statement about the ongoing rap beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. According to Cenat, Lamar completely destroyed Drake in their lyrical feud.

Cenat, who has been making waves in the rap scene with his introspective lyrics and unique flow, expressed admiration for Lamar’s ability to craft intricate rhymes and deliver powerful messages through his music. He cited Lamar’s diss tracks aimed at Drake as evidence of his superior skills on the mic.

While the rivalry between Lamar and Drake has been a hot topic in the hip-hop community for years, Cenat’s declaration is sure to reignite the debate among fans. Whether you agree with him or not, there’s no denying that this rap beef has left a lasting impact on the genre.

  • Will the NFL Stop Kendrick Lamar From Dissing Drake?

What’s Drake going to do about the Super Bowl? The Canadian rapper just launched a blockbuster defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group for releasing and promoting Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” a diss track that disparages Drake as, among other things, a “certified pedophile.” In less than three weeks, Lamar is slated to headline the Super Bowl halftime show, where he’s expected to perform “Not Like Us” in front of 65,000 fans in New Orleans and 100 million-plus watching on TV. Could Drake attempt to push the NFL and Fox to prevent Lamar from performing the song?

That’s hard to say. Theoretically, repeating something false qualifies as a republication, and if the NFL, Fox, or the halftime show’s producer, Jay Z’s Roc Nation, gave Lamar the microphone to tell new audiences about Drake’s supposed sins, they could be as potentially liable as UMG. (Especially now that Drake has made everyone aware of the falsity of the statements, if they are indeed false.) However, Drake’s endgame here is… murky. It’s unlikely he’s after a payout—he’s already loaded, and the lawsuit only amplifies Lamar’s insult. Meanwhile, both Drake and Lamar have record deals with UMG units: Lamar with Interscope, Drake with Republic. Some speculate that Drake might be aiming to wiggle out of his record deal, although this would be a strange way to do it. Quite a few lawyers have emphasized to me that Drake’s lawsuit is targeting only Lamar’s label, not Lamar directly. The decision to not go after the speaker most responsible for the trash talk seems… calculated.

In a recent feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, many fans are wondering if the NFL will step in and put an end to the diss tracks being released by Lamar. The two artists have been going back and forth with insults and jabs in their music, causing tension between their fan bases.

With the NFL being a major platform for both artists to showcase their talent through performances at halftime shows and other events, there is speculation that the league may intervene to prevent any further escalation of the feud.

However, it is unclear if the NFL will actually take action to stop Kendrick Lamar from dissing Drake, as both artists have the right to express themselves through their music. Ultimately, it will be up to the artists themselves to decide if they want to continue the feud or move on from it. Only time will tell if the NFL will play a role in this ongoing feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake.
