Jan. 22 (UPI) — Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was named the 2024 NFL MVP by the Pro Football Writers of America, the organization announced Wednesday. Jackson earned the honor for a third time, including last season.

Voters also selected Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley as the PFWA Offensive Player of the Year. Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II was named the PFWA Defensive Player of the Year.

Jackson became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 4,000 yards and run for more than 800 yards in a single season during his 2024-25 season.

He completed 66.7% of his passes for 4,172 yards, 41 scores and just four interceptions over 17 starts for the 12-5 Ravens. The Ravens totaled the most yards in the NFL while led by Jackson, running back Derrick Henry and the league’s top rushing offense.

Jackson led the NFL with a 119.6 passer rating. He also ran for 914 yards and four scores, and last month passed Michael Vick to set a record for the most career rushing yards for a quarterback in NFL history. He pushed his total to 6,173 yards over seven seasons. Vick ran for 6,109 yards over 13 seasons.

He registered the highest offensive rating and passer rating among NFL quarterbacks, according to Pro Football Focus.

Barkley, who joined the Eagles last off-season, totaled a career- and NFL-best 2,005 rushing yards and 13 scores on 345 carries in 16 starts. He also totaled 278 yards and two scores on 33 catches for the 14-3 Eagles, who owned the No. 2 rushing offense in the NFL.

  • Lamar Jackson Wins Pro Football Writers of America MVP Award

Lamar Jackson will find out next month if he wins the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award for the third time, but he appears to be on his way.

Writers who cover the league most regularly have given him their nod. The Professional Football Writers of America named Jackson the 2024 NFL’s Most Valuable Player in voting conducted by PFWA members.

It’s another indication that Jackson is the favorite to be named the league’s MVP again during Super Bowl week. When he was named the league’s MVP in 2019 and 2023, Jackson was also named the PFWA’s MVP.

Leading Baltimore to its second straight AFC North title, Jackson was first-team All-Pro and set career highs for passing yards (4,172), touchdown passes (41), quarterback rating (119.6) and completions (316).

He led the league in rushing yards by a quarterback (915) and became the first player in league history with at least 4,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards. He also became the league’s all-time rushing leader at quarterback with 6,173 yards, surpassing the previous record held by Michael Vick (6,109).

Jackson’s third MVP from the PFWA ties him with quarterback Tom Brady (2007, 2010 and 2017) for second-most in the organization’s history. Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers received the award four times from the PFWA.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who led the NFL with 2,005 rushing yards, was named PFWA Offensive Player of the Year. Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who surrendered the fewest receiving yards at his position when targeted by opposing quarterbacks, was named PFWA Defensive Player of the Year.

Lamar Jackson Wins Pro Football Writers of America MVP Award

In a historic moment for the NFL, Lamar Jackson has been named the Pro Football Writers of America MVP for the 2019 season. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback had a phenomenal year, leading his team to a 14-2 record and securing the top seed in the AFC playoffs.

Jackson’s electrifying playmaking ability and dynamic dual-threat skills set him apart from the competition, as he became the first player in NFL history to throw for over 3,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. His 36 touchdown passes and 7 rushing touchdowns solidified his status as the league’s most valuable player.

The PFWA MVP award is a prestigious honor voted on by members of the media who cover the NFL, making it a true testament to Jackson’s exceptional performance on the field. With this latest accolade, Jackson cements his place as one of the brightest young stars in the league and a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Congratulations to Lamar Jackson on this well-deserved recognition as the PFWA MVP, and here’s to many more incredible seasons ahead. #LamarJackson #PFWA #MVP #NFL

  • Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley, Lamar Jackson among AP NFL MVP finalists

Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley, Joe Burrow, Jared Goff and Lamar Jackson are finalists for The Associated Press 2024 NFL Most Valuable Player award.

Barkley, Burrow and Jackson also are finalists for Offensive Player of the Year and Burrow is also in the running for Comeback Player of the Year.

The winners will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 6. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league completed voting before the playoffs began.

Here are the finalists, in alphabetical order, for the eight AP NFL awards:

Most Valuable Player: Allen helped the Bills win their fifth straight AFC East title. He threw for 3,731 yards, 28 TDs and had six picks for a 101.4 passer rating. Allen ran for 531 yards and 12 scores.

Barkley ran for 2,005 yards (the eighth-best total in NFL history). He sat out Philadelphia’s final regular-season game when he needed 101 yards to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season record. Barkley helped the Eagles win the NFC East and advance to the conference championship game.

Burrow led the NFL with a career-high 4,918 yards passing and 43 TDs, but the Cincinnati Bengals finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs.

Goff threw for 4,629 yards, 37 TDs and nine interceptions and led Detroit to the No. 1 seed in the NFC. The Lions were eliminated in the divisional round by Washington.

Jackson, the reigning winner, is seeking his third MVP award after leading the Ravens to an AFC North title. Jackson had career highs with 4,172 yards passing, 41 TDs (to just four interceptions) and a 119.6 passer rating, which led the NFL. He was a first-team All Pro for the third time and also ran for 915 yards and four TDs. The Ravens were knocked out of the divisional round by Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

Offensive Player of the Year: Barkley, Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Derrick Henry and Jackson are finalists for the award.

Chase won the receiving triple crown, leading the league with 127 receptions, 1,708 yards and 17 TDs. The Bengals star wide receiver was a unanimous selection for All-Pro.

Henry, the 2020 Offensive Player of the Year, had 1,921 yards rushing and 16 TDs in his first season with the Ravens.

Defensive Player of the Year: Eagles linebacker Zack Baun went from mostly playing special teams for the Saints to earning All-Pro honors in his first season in Philadelphia.

All-Pro edge rusher Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, had 14 sacks for the Cleveland Browns.

Bengals All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson led the NFL with 17 1/2 sacks.

Broncos All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II allowed just 37 receptions, had four picks and opposing quarterbacks had a 61.1 passer rating throwing against him

Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt, the 2021 winner, had 11 1/2 sacks and forced six fumbles.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Raiders tight end Brock Bowers set a rookie record with 112 receptions and his 1,194 yards receiving were the most by a first-year player at his position.

Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels led the team to an eight-win improvement and has them one win away from a Super Bowl appearance. He threw for 3,568 yards, 25 TDs and posted a 100.1 rating. Daniels also ran for 891 yards and six scores.

Giants receiver Malik Nabers had 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven TDs.

Broncos QB Bo Nix helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time in nine years. He had 3,775 yards passing, 29 TDs, 12 picks and ran for 430 yards and four scores.

Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr. caught 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 TDs.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean was among the highest-rated players in the slot, holding opponents to 50 receptions. He had five pass breakups and quarterbacks had an 82.2 passer rating against him.

Rams defensive tackle Braden Fiske led the team and all rookies with 8 1/2 sacks. He had 51 pressures, two forced fumbles and recoveries, 10 tackles for loss and 10 quarterback hits.

Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell allowed 40 receptions, had nine pass breakups and quarterbacks had an 87 passer rating against him.

Dolphins edge Chop Robinson had six sacks, 20 pressures and eight tackles for loss.

Rams edge Jared Verse had 4 1/2 sacks but led all rookies in quarterback hits (18), pressures (77) and hurries (56). He also had 11 tackles for loss.

Coach of the Year: Detroit’s Dan Campbell, Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell, Denver’s Sean Payton, Washington’s Dan Quinn and Kansas City’s Andy Reid are the finalists.

Campbell guided the Lions (15-3) to the NFC’s No. 1 seed. Connell led the Vikings (14-4) to the playoffs despite the departure of Kirk Cousins in free agency and losing rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy to a season-ending knee injury in training camp.

Payton helped the Broncos (10-8) overcome salary-cap woes stemming from the decision to release Russell Wilson and ended a nine-year playoff drought.

Quinn took over a 4-13 team and turned the Commanders into a 12-win playoff team.

Reid had the Chiefs (16-2) back atop the AFC as the No. 1 seed in a quest for a third straight Super Bowl victory.

Assistant Coach of the Year: Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Vikings DC Brian Flores, Lions DC Aaron Glenn and Lions OC Ben Johnson made the list.

Comeback Player of the Year: Burrow, Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold, Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins, Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez and Bills safety Damar Hamlin are the finalists.

The Associated Press has announced the finalists for the NFL MVP award, and among them are three young stars who have taken the league by storm this season: Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley, and Lamar Jackson.

Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, has had a breakout season, leading his team to a division title and a playoff berth. Allen has showcased his arm strength and accuracy, as well as his ability to make plays with his legs. His leadership and poise in big moments have been instrumental in the Bills’ success this season.

Saquon Barkley, the dynamic running back for the New York Giants, has been a force to be reckoned with on the field. Barkley’s combination of speed, power, and elusiveness has made him one of the most electrifying players in the league. Despite facing injuries this season, Barkley has still managed to put up impressive numbers and make a significant impact for his team.

Lamar Jackson, the dual-threat quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, has been a revelation this season. Jackson’s ability to make defenders miss in the open field and his pinpoint accuracy as a passer have made him a nightmare for opposing defenses. Jackson has led the Ravens to the best record in the league and has solidified himself as one of the most exciting players in the NFL.

The winner of the AP NFL MVP award will be announced in the coming weeks, but one thing is for certain: all three of these young stars have bright futures ahead of them in the league.

  • NFL News: Former Lamar Jackson teammate joins Josh Allen’s Bills ahead of playoff game vs Ravens

The 2025 NFL playoffs will bring us a highly anticipated meeting early in the postseason, with the Buffalo Bills taking on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Needless to say, all eyes will be on quarterbacks Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, who lead the race for this year’s MVP award.

While the Bills head into this game with a slightly better record in the regular season, which gives them home-field advantage, it’s hard to tell who are favorites. Buffalo, therefore, has seemingly employed a special tactic to prepare for this opponent.

The AFC East champions decided to reunite with a player who’s also familiar with the Ravens just days before taking on Jackson and company. We’re talking about quarterback Anthony Brown.

On Wednesday, the Bills announced that they signed Brown to their practice squad, in a move that may help the team, especially the defensive unit, to prepare for Baltimore in the days prior to Sunday’s game.

Anthony Brown #12 of the Baltimore Ravens looks on against the Washington Commanders during the second half of a preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium on August 27, 2022 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Anthony Brown #12 of the Baltimore Ravens looks on against the Washington Commanders during the second half of a preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium on August 27, 2022 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Anthony Brown’s experience with Jackson’s Ravens

Brown, 26, spent his rookie season with the Ravens after going undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. After months on the practice squad, he was elevated to the active roster to serve as Tyler Huntley’s backup, with Jackson on the sidelines.

With Huntley also getting injured, the Oregon product ended up taking the field the same week he was activated, going three-of-five for 16 yards in the Ravens’ 16-14 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 14.

John Harbaugh once again turned to Brown in Week 18 of the 2022 NFL season, since both Jackson and Huntley were out. With 286 yards and three turnovers from the quarterback, Baltimore lost 16-27 to the Cincinnati Bengals.

After being released by the team in 2023, Brown started to bounce around the league. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of the 2024 NFL season, but was waived way before Week 1.

Returning to Buffalo to help the Bills prepare for Jackson

It didn’t take him long to find a new home in Buffalo, but the Bills cut him only a few days later. Brown eventually landed on the Arizona Cardinals, forming part of their scout team until the end of the regular season.

    Josh Allen and Sean McDermott

Josh Allen and Sean McDermott before a game.

His practice squad deal expired as the Cardinals missed the playoffs, which came in great timing for the Bills. With Brown, Sean McDermott and company get a player who can mimick Jackson with the scout team in practice.

“If you just put a mobile person back there planning on scrambles, the defense know it’s one of those plays. So in order to hide that, what Anthony brings is both. He can throw it and run it. A true, honest look, down in and down out,” McDermott said after adding Brown.

It’s safe to say that this is the only reason Brown is returning to the Bills, who already have Mitchell Trubisky and Mike White behind Allen on their 53-man roster. But if he can help them stop Jackson and the Ravens on Sunday, it will be more than worth it.

In a surprising move, the Buffalo Bills have signed former Louisville Cardinals wide receiver Jaylen Smith to their practice squad ahead of their highly anticipated playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens. Smith, who played alongside Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in college, brings a familiarity with the reigning MVP that could provide valuable insights for the Bills defense as they prepare to face him in the postseason.

The addition of Smith to the Bills roster adds an interesting dynamic to this weekend’s matchup, as he can offer valuable intel on Jackson’s tendencies and playing style. This insider knowledge could prove to be a game-changer for Buffalo as they look to advance in the playoffs and potentially upset the top-seeded Ravens.

It will be intriguing to see how Smith’s presence impacts the Bills’ game plan against Jackson and the Ravens, and whether his familiarity with his former teammate gives Buffalo an edge in their quest for a playoff victory. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Bills and Ravens prepare to face off in what promises to be an exciting playoff showdown.

  • Bills sign former Ravens quarterback to mimic Lamar Jackson ahead of divisional round matchup

While no one is Lamar Jackson, the Buffalo Bills are doing their best to emulate in practice what they will be facing when Jackson and the Ravens come to town for Sunday night’s AFC divisional round showdown.

The Bills have signed Anthony Brown, a three-year veteran quarterback who broke into the NFL with the Ravens back in 2022. Brown played in two games that season, throwing for 302 yards with two interceptions while completing just 44.9% of his throws. Like Jackson, Brown is capable of extending and making plays with his mobility, which is the main reason why Bills head coach Sean McDermott signed him.

“If you just put a mobile person back there when you’re planning on working on the scrambles or the quarterback run game (in practice), the defensive players know this is one of those plays, right?” McDermott said. “If you just have to sub out one of our normal quarterbacks for a mobile player like that.

“In order to hide that, what Anthony brings to the table is both. He can throw it, he can run it, and so there’s a little bit more of a true, honest look. … Whether he’s handing it off, dropping back or and some of the things, conceptually, at least, that Lamar does.”

As McDermott alluded to, Brown can “conceptually” provide similar looks to what Buffalo’s defense will see on Sunday night. But no NFL player can mimic what Jackson does on a football field. Jackson is, after all, the most prolific running quarterback in NFL history having broken Michael Vick’s career rushing record for quarterbacks earlier this season.

In Saturday’s wild-card round win over the Steelers, either Jackson or Derrick Henry carried the ball on all but one of a 13-play, 85-yard drive that was done entirely on the ground. Jackson, running the read option to near perfection, ran for 81 yards on 15 carries. Henry rumbled for 186 yards and two touchdowns while tying Hall of Famer Terrell Davis’ postseason record by recording his fourth game of at least 150 rushing yards.

He isn’t Jackson, but Brown will nonetheless help Buffalo’s defense prepare for what could be an instant classic. After years of trying and coming up just short, both teams are hoping to get over the hump while superseding the Chiefs as this year’s AFC representative in the Super Bowl

The Buffalo Bills have made a strategic move ahead of their divisional round matchup by signing former Baltimore Ravens quarterback to mimic Lamar Jackson. With the Bills set to face off against the Ravens in a highly anticipated showdown, they are pulling out all the stops to prepare for the dynamic playmaking abilities of Jackson.

The newly signed quarterback, who has experience playing in a similar dual-threat style to Jackson, will be tasked with emulating the elusive speed and agility that makes the Ravens quarterback such a force to be reckoned with. By bringing in a player who can replicate Jackson’s unique skill set in practice, the Bills are hoping to gain a competitive edge and be better prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

As the Bills continue to fine-tune their game plan and hone in on their defensive strategies, this signing serves as a clear indication of their commitment to leaving no stone unturned in their quest for victory. With the divisional round matchup looming large, all eyes will be on how this strategic move pays off for the Bills as they look to advance in the playoffs.

  • Bills’ Von Miller Confirms Plan to Stop Derrick Henry as Lamar Jackson Rejects Josh Allen’s Friendship

The Ravens will visit the Bills at an AFC divisional playoff showdown on Jan 19. And this is the game ahead of the game—THE MIND GAME. A face-off between MVP favorites, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, will make for the craziest storylines in the making, yes. But for 35-year-old LB Von Miller to be facing his 31-year-old workout buddy RB Derrick Henry, scheming against the El Tractorcito did not necessarily mean digging up facts and stats but simply erred on the side of caution!

But we do understand Miller’s urgency to plot. At 31, the guy’s defying every law of football physics. According to Pro Football Focus, Henry’s 2024 season was his best ever: 325 carries, 1,921 yards, and 18 touchdowns. Not bad for someone supposedly past his prime, right? Miller, the man tasked with stopping this freight train, had some thoughts.

“Me and Derrick Henry are exactly the same size, as far as height and weight. I think my 40 time was a little bit faster, I think he jumps a little bit higher, though I got a lot of respect for Derrick. We work out together in Dallas in the offseason, so it’s you gotta have population,” Miller joked on the Rich Eisen Show. Translation: it’s not a one-man job. And why not? After all, Henry is a running back who can make a linebacker appear ‘normal’! And guess what? not just looks, even numbers support that. Look back to 2016, the year Henry was drafted.

    Article continues below this ad

After Henry’s impressive workout, The NFL Network flashed a graphic showing the running back’s closest NFL comparison by combine workout. Not Eddie Lacy, Adrian Peterson, or Marshawn Lynch. But it was none other than the then-Denver Broncos Von Miller! Many had initially thought that it was a mistake. Take a look at the detailed side-by-side stats.

    Henry Miller
    Year 2016 2011
    Height 6′ 2 5/8″ 6′ 2 5/8″
    Weight 247 246
    40-yard dash 4.54 4.53
    Bench Press 22 21
    Vertical 37 37
    Broad jump 1010 1006

Long story short: tackling Henry is like trying to bring down a linebacker. For instance, back in 2015, Henry had once flipped over Michigan State defensive lineman Shilique Calhoun with a vicious stiff-arm and it was so hard that Calhoun front flipped to the ground. There are two possible explanations for this.

Either Henry was strong enough after 20 carries and 75 yards against the Michigan State defense that he could lift an All-Big Ten defensive end and toss him to the ground like a doll, or Calhoun was finally so tired of trying to tackle the Heisman Trophy winner that he tried to take him down with Guile’s flash kick from Street Fighter II Turbo. Either way, it didn’t end well for Calhoun.

Well, Von Miller does not necessarily need to dig up these facts and stats. Because he knows firsthand how tough Henry is—they work out together at the SandersFit Performance Center in Dallas. And apparently, Henry’s a beast not just on the field but in the gym, too.

“Keeping up with him in the weight room is harder than the football field,” Miller admitted. The guy’s got multiple workouts a day, a recovery routine that sounds straight out of a sci-fi movie, and an intensity level that’s borderline terrifying. No wonder he runs like a man possessed every Sunday.

    via Imago

Remember back in September when Henry and Jackson tag-teamed the Cowboys for a clutch Ravens 28-25 win? Henry ran for 151 yards and two TDs, while Jackson did his usual MVP magic. Yup, the same game that opened yet another chapter in Jerry Jones’ playbook of ‘What Ifs & Almosts’ as he later admitted, they couldn’t afford Henry. Yeah, no kidding, Jerry… sigh.

Now, as the Bills and Ravens prepare to clash, Miller sums it up perfectly. “They’re hot, we’re hot, and this is what the divisional round is all about.” Do you feel that? That’s the fire. And it’s about to ignite.

Von Miller knows a little ‘TWO’ much about Super Bowl

Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson—rivals or kindred spirits? You decide. Sure, they’re ducking it out, but isn’t it wild how similar their journeys are? Neither has made it to the Super Bowl yet and at this point, we just can’t get tired of taking his name. Of course, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Combined, Allen and Jackson are 0-4 against KC in the playoffs. That just sums it up for almost most of the teams, if not all!

But here we are, and the chatter is deafening. Jackson’s chasing his third MVP, while Allen’s gunning for his first. Yet both quarterbacks want none of the drama. “In the history of football, I’ve never played against another quarterback,” Allen quipped, brushing off comparisons. Jackson? He’s more direct: “I’m trying to beat you. I’m not trying to be your friend.” Straight fire.

See, the thing is, without any doubt, the numbers are favoring the Purple Pain signal-caller. But if the Mafia’s favorite does go the distance, don’t wallow to see the votes going in Allen’s pool.

Now, let’s talk about the man who has been to the promised land: Von Miller. Two Super Bowl rings a Super Bowl MVP trophy, and a knack for making QBs sweat. Miller’s faced legends, but he’s not underestimating Lamar. “You don’t want to rush too conservative, but you don’t want to be reckless either,” he explained. Sounds simple, but against Jackson, it’s like threading a needle in a hurricane.

Miller’s plan? Channel advice from Maxx Crosby, another Lamar-stopper. “You can’t rush scared,” Crosby said. “Respect him, but don’t fear him.” That’s the vibe: calculated aggression. Because let’s be real. If you let Lamar roam, he’s running wild.

But hey, the Ravens aren’t just about Jackson. Derrick Henry’s in the mix, and Miller knows the danger. The Bills, with their Super Bowl drought, have a chance to rewrite history. With Miller anchoring their defense, they’ve got a shot. As Miller put it, “You just gotta make a few more plays.” Seems like he’s got the trick to pull a rabbit out of the hat. One, that Allen and Buffalo would be hoping it works on D-DAY!

The upcoming matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans has been heating up as Bills’ linebacker Von Miller confirms his plan to stop Titans’ running back Derrick Henry.

Miller, known for his fierce pass rush and ability to disrupt opposing offenses, is setting his sights on shutting down Henry, one of the most dominant running backs in the league. With Henry’s powerful running style and ability to break tackles, Miller’s task will not be easy. However, the Bills’ defense is up for the challenge as they look to contain Henry and secure a victory against the Titans.

In a separate development, Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson has rejected an offer of friendship from Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen. The two young quarterbacks have faced off on the field in the past, with Allen leading the Bills to victory over Jackson and the Ravens. Despite their competitive rivalry, Allen extended an olive branch to Jackson, but the Ravens’ quarterback declined, stating that he is focused solely on winning games and not making friends with his opponents.

As tensions rise and players prepare for the upcoming game, fans can expect an intense battle between the Bills and the Titans, with Miller aiming to stop Henry and Jackson rejecting Allen’s friendship offer. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting matchup between two talented teams.

  • Buffalo Bills Star Reveals Key to Slowing Down Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is as dangerous a football player as they come, something Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller is well aware of headed into the AFC Divisional at Highmark Stadium.

During a recent podcast appearance with Las Vegas Raiders edge Maxx Crosby, Von Miller talked about the challenge of trying to slow down Jackson, noting that it will take a balanced pass rush to keep him at bay. In Week 4’s 35-10 loss to Baltimore, Miller played just nine snaps on defense before beginning his four-game suspension the following week.

“Going against Lamar Jackson, you don’t want to rush too conservative, but you don’t want to be too reckless at the same time,” Miller said, per the Bills team website. “You just gotta play your game…Cage rushing those guys each and every play is not effective. It’s Lamar Jackson, he’s gonna make plays. So, you just gotta rush. And you gotta be conscious of where you’re rushing and how you’re rushing. But at the end of the day, you just gotta go out there and play your game.”

In that win over Buffalo, it was Ravens running back Derrick Henry ran all over the Bills. One would think that Sean McDermott’s defense will stop at nothing to prevent this from happening again, but this could leave room for Jackson to work his magic even more. In that game, the Ravens star quarterback finished 13 of 18 passing for 156 yards and two touchdowns along with six carries for 54 yards and another score.

The Ravens were able to lean on their ground game for the majority of the game, but Jackson is more than capable of getting into a shootout with Bills star quarterback Josh Allen.

Something will have to give when these two teams kick off from Orchard Park on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

The Buffalo Bills have found success in slowing down Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson, and star player reveals the key to their defensive strategy.

In a recent interview, Bills’ cornerback Tre’Davious White shared that the key to slowing down Jackson is to stay disciplined and maintain gap integrity. He emphasized the importance of not allowing Jackson to break contain and extend plays with his legs.

White also mentioned the need for the defense to communicate effectively and stay focused on their assignments, as Jackson’s ability to make plays with both his arm and legs can pose a significant challenge.

With this insight from one of the Bills’ key defensive players, it will be interesting to see if other teams can adopt a similar strategy to contain the dynamic and explosive Lamar Jackson.

  • Josh Allen vs. Lamar Jackson: The greatest divisional playoff matchup ever

    CNN
     —

The match-up every single NFL fan has been waiting for is here: Josh Allen vs. Lamar Jackson. These two quarterbacks have been neck-in-neck for the league MVP title for months now.

Now, Allen’s Buffalo Bills will host Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens in what I would argue is statistically the greatest quarterback match-up in divisional playoff history.

The greatest of what will be, after this weekend, 229 divisional playoff games in the Super Bowl era.

Football is weird in that no one stat is the be all and end all. Still, it’s pretty clear in the stats that are all encompassing that Allen and Jackson are really good.

Take for instance adjusted net yards per pass attempt. This seeks to measure how many yards a quarterback and touchdowns a quarterback throws for, as well as adjusting that for how many sacks and interceptions they throw.

Jackson was first in the NFL at 9.4 and Allen was third at 8.0 yards. Allen threw for fewer yards and touchdowns than Jackson, but he took fewer sacks. Jackson threw two fewer interceptions, though both were well below the league average.

I went back through the record books to see any other divisional games where both starting quarterbacks had 8.0 or better adjusted net yards per pass attempt during the regular season leading up to the playoff.

There were just two: the 2014 NFC divisional playoff between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Packers and the 2019 AFC divisional playoff between the Ravens (and Jackson) and the Tennessee Titans.

Of course, one of the things that makes Allen and Jackson so special is that they can run the ball with authority. Allen runs like a fullback and picks up a ton of first downs and touchdowns. Jackson runs for yards.

Josh Allen #17 of the Buffalo Bills hands off the ball to teammate James Cook #4 in the third quarter against the Denver Broncos during the AFC Wild Card Playoffs at Highmark Stadium on January 12, 2025 in Orchard Park, New York.

Both men have over 500 yards rushing and at least four rushing touchdowns. Allen is second in the league in rushing touchdowns, while Jackson leads the league in rushing yards.

Again, I decided to look back and see how many divisional playoff games featured two starting quarterbacks who ran for at least 500 yards and 4 touchdowns during that year’s regular season.

There were a mere three: the 2013 NFC divisional playoff between the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers, the 2014 NFC divisional playoff between the Panthers and Seattle Seahawks and the 2022 NFC divisional playoff between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.

In other words, the match-up between Allen and Jackson will mark the first time in an AFC divisional playoff that both team’s starting quarterbacks ran for at least 500 yards and 4 touchdowns that regular season.

What you’ll note is that none of these games with the elite rushing quarterbacks are the same as the games with the elite passing quarterbacks.

Combining passing and rushing statistics for a quarterback isn’t easy. Indeed, as I noted at the start, combining all the passing statistics into one metric is a fraught exercise.

Still, we can make an attempt. One way to do that is through Pro-Football Reference’s approximate value metric.

Allen’s approximate value this year is currently a 20. Jackson’s is slightly higher at a 21. Both of those are elite and are the best and second best in the league.

What’s amazing is this marks the only time in divisional playoff history that both teams’ starting quarterbacks have approximate values of at least 20.

By this metric, this weekend’s game is the greatest match-up of starting quarterbacks in a divisional round playoff game ever.

Lamar Jackson #8 of the Baltimore Ravens throws a pass ahead of Ogbo Okoronkwo of the Cleveland Browns during the second quarter at M&T Bank Stadium.

Now to be clear, this isn’t the only stat that seeks to combine rushing and passing into one metric. You can use ESPN’s QBR or expected points added (EPA) above replacement.

Allen is, for example, slightly ahead of Jackson in ESPN’s QBR, so these stats can differ slightly.

When the great Neil Paine ran the stats, he found the only divisional round playoff with a better combined EPA above replacement for the starting quarterbacks was the 2013 game between the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers.

When you are arguing whether this weekend’s matchup is the greatest or second greatest in divisional playoff history, you know it is historic.

And because both quarterbacks are so good, this game, itself, is historic. Paine calculated that this is the best divisional playoff game in 50 years, when you take into account how good the teams were and how tough their schedules were during the regular season.

My hope as a Bills’ fan is that it is a historically good game for the blue and red. Otherwise, don’t expect me to show up to work on Monday.

As the NFL playoffs heat up, all eyes are on the highly anticipated matchup between Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson in the divisional round. These two dynamic young quarterbacks are set to face off in what many are calling the greatest divisional playoff matchup ever.

Both Allen and Jackson have been electrifying fans all season with their impressive performances on the field. Allen, the Buffalo Bills’ signal-caller, has been putting up MVP-caliber numbers, leading his team to their first division title in over two decades. On the other side, Jackson has been dazzling with his dual-threat abilities, making defenders miss with his speed and agility.

The clash between Allen and Jackson is not just a battle of quarterbacks, but a showdown between two of the most exciting teams in the league. The Bills and the Ravens both boast high-powered offenses and stingy defenses, setting the stage for an epic showdown on the gridiron.

As fans eagerly await kickoff, the buzz surrounding this matchup continues to grow. Will Allen’s arm strength and accuracy be enough to outduel Jackson’s speed and elusiveness? Can the Bills’ defense contain the Ravens’ explosive playmakers? These questions and more will be answered as these two young stars go head-to-head in what promises to be a playoff classic.

So don’t miss a second of the action as Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson square off in what could go down as the greatest divisional playoff matchup ever. Get ready for a thrilling showdown between two of the NFL’s brightest talents.
