  • Lamont accuses Eversource, UI of campaign to oust PURA chair

Gov. Ned Lamont fired back against the state’s largest utilities on Friday, publicly accusing them of waging a campaign to oust his appointed chairwoman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, Marissa Gillett.

“There’s a full-court press to get her out of there, I mean the lobbyists, the publicists, the lawyers,” Lamont told reporters following an unrelated event at the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

“Thank God all those costs are not in the rate base or your electric prices would really be through the roof,” he added, referring to legislation passed two years ago that prohibited utilities from recovering certain costs through electric rates paid by customers.

The governor’s comments came a day after two of the state’s largest utilities — Eversource and United Illuminating — filed a lawsuit against PURA, accusing Gillett of overstepping her authority and making unilateral decisions in hundreds of cases involving the companies’ businesses.

In a recent press conference, Governor Ned Lamont accused utility companies Eversource and United Illuminating (UI) of launching a campaign to oust the chair of the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).

Lamont claimed that Eversource and UI are trying to remove PURA Chair Marissa Gillett because of her tough stance on holding the utilities accountable for their actions, particularly in the wake of the controversial rate hikes and power outages last year.

The governor went on to say that he fully supports Gillett and her efforts to protect consumers and ensure fair and transparent utility practices in the state. He also warned the utilities that any attempts to undermine PURA’s independence and authority would not be tolerated.

Eversource and UI have denied the allegations, stating that they respect the role of PURA and are committed to working collaboratively with the regulatory authority to address the needs of Connecticut residents.

The situation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen how it will unfold in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Kentucky basketball injury update: Lamont Butler sidelined with shoulder injury

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — One starter in, one starter out for Kentucky basketball.

Fifth-year senior guard Lamont Butler, who has an injured shoulder, won’t play Tuesday night versus Tennessee. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound California native was listed as “out” on the SEC’s availability report, which posted at 5 p.m. ET Tuesday, two hours before the Wildcats and Volunteers were set to square off at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Tuesday will be the third game this season Butler has missed because of injury. He sat out consecutive games (Gonzaga and Colgate) last month.

Butler paces the Wildcats in assists (4.8) and steals (1.76) per game. His 13.2 points per outing is No. 2 among UK players, trailing fellow guard Otega Oweh‘s 15.9.

While Butler won’t take the floor, another fifth-year senior, forward Andrew Carr, is back after a one-game absence. Carr started UK’s first 18 games this season before sitting out last week’s loss at Vanderbilt with a back injury.

Carr averages 10.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 27 minutes per game. He’s made more than half his shots (53.9%; 69 for 128) from the field during the 2024-25 campaign. That’s the second-best percentage on the team after center Amari Williams at 56.3% (67 of 119).

Kentucky basketball injury update: Lamont Butler sidelined with shoulder injury

The Kentucky Wildcats are facing another setback as guard Lamont Butler has been sidelined with a shoulder injury. Butler suffered the injury during a recent practice and is expected to be out for at least a few weeks.

Head coach John Calipari expressed his disappointment over Butler’s injury, stating that he was looking forward to seeing the sophomore guard continue to develop and contribute to the team this season.

Butler, who played in all 31 games last season, averaged 4.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. His absence will create a void in the Wildcats’ backcourt rotation, forcing other players to step up and fill the void.

The team is hopeful that Butler will make a swift recovery and be able to return to action as soon as possible. In the meantime, fans are encouraged to support Butler and the rest of the team as they navigate through this injury setback. Stay tuned for more updates on Butler’s recovery progress.

  • Kentucky’s Lamont Butler to miss Tuesday game vs. Tennessee

Kentucky senior Lamont Butler, who has started 17 games for the Wildcats this season, is out for Tuesday night’s trip to Tennessee.

Butler has been dealing with a shoulder injury, and coach Mark Pope said after Saturday’s loss to Vanderbilt that he’s not 100%.

“Lamont, he’s got a lot right now. We all know what a warrior he is,” Pope said. “He is giving us everything he’s got right now. But it’s hard for him, physically, right now.”

Butler, who transferred to Kentucky last spring after four seasons at San Diego State, has been one of the best guards in the SEC. He’s averaging 13.2 points, 4.8 assists and 1.8 steals, shooting 40% from 3-point range.

Earlier this season versus Louisville, Butler had 32 points and six assists, shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the field and 6-for-6 from 3-point range. He also had 19 points and eight assists in an early-January win over Florida.

Without Butler, look for Jaxson Robinson to shoulder more of the ballhandling responsibilities. Robinson had five assists against Gonzaga when Butler was out earlier this season and also ran the offense against Colgate in a game both Butler and Kerr Kriisa missed.

Kentucky is looking to regain some consistency, having lost two games in a row to Alabama and Vanderbilt and going just 4-4 in its past eight games after starting out with 10 wins in its first 11 games.

In addition to Butler being out, the SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report listed forward Andrew Carr as questionable. Carr missed the Vanderbilt game with a back issue that has hampered him for a few weeks. Kriisa, who underwent ankle surgery in December, is also out.

    No. 12 Kentucky (14-5, 3-3 SEC) heads to No. 8 Tennessee (17-3, 4-3 SEC) on Tuesday (7 p.m., ESPN).

Kentucky’s Lamont Butler to miss Tuesday game vs. Tennessee

Kentucky Wildcats guard Lamont Butler will be sidelined for Tuesday’s game against the Tennessee Volunteers due to a nagging ankle injury. Butler, a key contributor for the Wildcats, has been dealing with the injury for the past week and has not been able to fully participate in practice.

Head coach John Calipari expressed disappointment in Butler’s absence, stating, “Lamont has been a valuable player for us all season and we will miss his presence on the court. However, we want to prioritize his health and make sure he is fully recovered before returning to action.”

The Wildcats will look to adjust their game plan in Butler’s absence and rely on other players to step up and fill the void. Despite this setback, Kentucky remains confident in their ability to compete and secure a victory against the Volunteers.

Fans are encouraged to show their support for Butler as he works towards a speedy recovery and a return to the court. Stay tuned for updates on his status for future games.

  • Governor Lamont Activates Connecticut’s Severe Cold Weather Protocol Beginning Sunday Night

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont today announced that due a weather forecast indicating that Connecticut will experience a period of brutally frigid conditions over the coming days, he is directing the state’s severe cold weather protocol to go into effect beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2025, and remaining in effect through 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025.

During this period, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the daytime hours and overnight temperatures are anticipated to drop into the single digits and possibly below zero.

Anyone in need of shelter or warming center is urged to call 2-1-1 to get connected to these services, or they can visit 211ct.org to read a list of available locations. Transportation can be provided if necessary.

“Right now, meteorologists are telling us that this coming week may bring the coldest weather that Connecticut has experienced so far this season, so we want to get the word out that being outdoors in these frigid conditions for extended periods can be dangerous and even life threatening,” Governor Lamont. “Shelters and warming centers are available across Connecticut, and transportation can be arranged if needed. We also want to remind everyone that leaving pets outdoors in these conditions can cause frostbite and hypothermia just like in humans, which is why everyone should protect their pets from this harsh weather.”

The purpose of the state’s severe cold weather protocol is to ensure that the most vulnerable populations receive protection from the severe cold, which could be life threatening if exposed to the elements for extended periods of time. While enacted, a system is set up for state agencies and municipalities to coordinate with United Way 2-1-1 and Connecticut’s network of shelters to make sure that anyone in need can receive shelter from the outdoors, including transportation to shelters.

The following actions are implemented while the protocol is enacted:

    • The Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection’s Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security uses its WebEOC communications network, which is an internet-based system that enables local, regional, and state emergency management officials and first responders to share up-to-date information about a variety of situations and conditions. The system is used to monitor capacity at shelters across the state, enabling 2-1-1 to act as a clearinghouse to assist in finding shelter space for those who need it. Local officials, working through WebEOC, can alert 2-1-1 and the state when they open temporary shelters or warming centers.
    • The Connecticut Department of Social Services, Connecticut Department of Housing, and Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services coordinate with 2-1-1 and the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness, along with community-based providers, to provide transportation for people seeking shelter.

For emergency management news and resources, visit the state’s CTPrepares website at ct.gov/ctprepares.

Governor Lamont has activated Connecticut’s Severe Cold Weather Protocol, which will be in effect starting Sunday night. This protocol is put into place to ensure that the state’s most vulnerable populations are safe during extremely cold weather conditions.

With temperatures expected to drop significantly in the coming days, it is important for everyone to take precautions to stay warm and safe. The protocol will ensure that emergency shelters are open and available for those in need, as well as provide resources and assistance to those who may be at risk due to the cold weather.

It is crucial for everyone to take the necessary steps to stay warm and safe during this time. Make sure to dress in layers, stay indoors as much as possible, and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors to ensure they are safe as well.

If you or someone you know is in need of assistance during this cold weather, please do not hesitate to reach out to local authorities or emergency services. Let’s all work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all Connecticut residents during this cold snap. Stay safe and warm, everyone!

  • Andrew Carr and Lamont Butler will play vs. Alabama

Update 2: Lamont Butler is in the starting lineup, so he’s good to go today.

Update: The final injury report for this game is out.

For Kentucky, Lamont Butler is listed as a game-time decision.

As expected, Andrew Carr will play.

And for Alabama, Derrion Reid is out.

Now the BBN will have to wait it out, to see if PG1 will take the court. Butler will be needed to help slow down, Mark Sears.

The SEC injury report is out for the Kentucky Wildcats and Alabama Crimson Tide ahead of their Saturday matchup.

Alabama enters this game with several players banged up. Talented forward Derrion Reid missed Tuesday’s loss to Ole Miss with a lower-body injury. Reid is questionable to play on Saturday. He’s averaging 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in 15 appearances.

The Crimson Tide are already without guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr., who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury back in November. He was averaging 11.5 points per game in eight appearances this season.

Reserve guard Houston Mallette has also missed time due to a knee injury and is out for this one. He’s averaging 3.2 points in six appearances this season.

For the Wildcats, it was pretty much a given that forward Andrew Carr would be on the injury report, where he’s been the last two games due to a back injury while missing practice time.

For Saturday’s game against Alabama, Carr is considered probable to play.

The real news is starting point guard Lamont Butler is questionable to play. It’s not a big surprise after watching Butler get dinged on multiple occasions in Tuesday’s win over Texas A&M. He left the game briefly with a shoulder injury before eventually returning.

Kerr Kriisa remains out while recovering from foot surgery.
