The Dallas Cowboys have a long list of unrestricted free agents who will officially hit the open market in a little less than two months. Of those, six or seven were significant contributors in 2024, meaning the Cowboys have some difficult decisions ahead of them in the coming weeks.
Today’s free agent profile series examines a player who wasn’t one of those significant contributors because he barely saw the field last season. That would be quarterback Trey Lance.
Year Review: Trey Lance’s 2024 season with the Dallas Cowboys was characterized by limited opportunities and mixed performances. The 24-year-old quarterback, who the Cowboys acquired in August of 2023, spent nearly the entirety of the regular season as Dallas’ third-string quarterback.
Even when Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending injury in Week 9, Dallas refused to elevate Lance to the starting lineup, leaving him cemented behind Cooper Rush as their clear backup. Lance got some brief playing time during a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10, but after that, he did not see the field for more than one snap until the final week of the regular season.
Dallas gave Lance a chance to start their regular-season finale against the Commanders, and the results were not pretty. The former first-round pick completed just 20 of his 34 passes for 244 yards and consistently struggled to hit open receivers. Lance’s performance made it clear that he currently does not possess the accuracy to become a stating-caliber quarterback at the NFL level.
The decision to trade for Lance has always been a head-scratching move, but not playing him in a lost season until the year’s final game may be even more confusing. Dallas had a golden opportunity to give Lance three or four starts down the stretch to see what he could do in an extended playing period. Instead, they waited until the final week of the year and threw Lance to the fire without their best offensive weapon in CeeDee Lamb.
Regardless, Lance did not take advantage of the opportunity and capped off a very tumultuous season with his poor showing against the Commanders.
Free Agency Outlook: The Cowboys declined Lance’s fifth-year option before the start of the regular season, so he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March.
Given Lance’s lack of playing time, it’s hard to project what the quarterback’s market will look like this spring. With so much inexperience and on-field struggles when he did get a chance to play, it’s not likely a team is willing to give Lance a multi-year contract. The 24-year-old will likely have to sign a one-year deal to hopefully serve as a team’s backup next season.
Even with all the negatives going against him, there could still be some teams that are infatuated with Lance’s potential. His mobility and athleticism could be an intriguing trait to an organization that believes they could fix his accuracy issues.
Last offseason, we saw 23 quarterbacks sign free-agent deals. Despite Lance’s struggles, there will always be a demand for good quarterback play, and teams will always be willing to give players a second chance. Last spring, Mason Rudolph and Carson Wentz signed one-year deals worth $2.8M and $3.2M, respectively. This is likely a good benchmark for where Lance could end up AAV-wise on a potential one-year deal.
Cowboys Verdict: When the Cowboys traded for Trey Lance back in August 2023, the move made little to no sense. Today, the same thing rings true, and his time in Dallas has almost certainly come to an end.
With all Dallas’ other needs to address this offseason, it’s hard to see them allocating even a small amount of cap space to bring back Lance and have him serve as their backup or third-string quarterback. To make a Lance return even more unlikely, Dallas’ long-time backup quarterback, Cooper Rush, is also a free agent this offseason.
Unless a team gives Rush a deal to let him compete for a starting spot, there’s virtually zero chance Dallas would choose to bring Lance back over the veteran. While Rush has not lit the world on fire when he filled in as the starter, he has won some games, and right or wrong, the organization has plenty of faith in his ability to steady the ship if Dak Prescott is to go down again.
Overall, Trey Lance’s tenure as a Dallas Cowboy will end with more questions than answers, as the former first-round pick will search for his next opportunity this March.
Prediction: Trey Lance signs a one-year, $2.5M deal with the New York Jets
As the Dallas Cowboys head into the 2025 offseason, one of the biggest decisions they will have to make is what to do with quarterback Trey Lance, who is set to become a free agent. Lance, who was drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has shown flashes of brilliance during his time in Dallas, but has also struggled with inconsistency.
At just 24 years old, Lance still has plenty of potential and could develop into a franchise quarterback for the Cowboys. However, with his contract set to expire, the team will have to decide whether or not to commit to him long-term.
Prediction:
It is likely that the Cowboys will look to re-sign Lance, as they have invested a lot in his development and see him as a key piece of their future. With a strong supporting cast of offensive weapons and a solid offensive line, Lance has the tools he needs to succeed in Dallas.
Ultimately, I predict that the Cowboys will offer Lance a lucrative contract extension, keeping him in Dallas for the foreseeable future. With the right coaching and support, Lance could develop into one of the top quarterbacks in the league and lead the Cowboys to success in the years to come.

While Aaron Glenn is reportedly in line to be the New York Jets‘ next head coach, he hasn’t officially been offered the job just yet. The Detroit Lions‘ defensive coordinator visited with the team’s brass on Tuesday but left without a deal in place, as confirmed by CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones.
Lance Newmark, the Commanders‘ assistant general manager who has also been linked to New York’s GM vacancy, also visited with the team but also reportedly did not receive a contract.
The 52-year-old Glenn also has a second interview lined up with the New Orleans Saints. He has also spoken with the Jaguars about their head coaching position. Glenn also spoke with the Bears before they hired former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
A former NFL defensive back, Glenn broken into the NFL as an assistant defensive backs coach with the Cleveland Browns. He later became a defensive backs with the Saints before becoming the Lions’ defensive coordinator in 2021. Under Glenn, the Lions went from 32nd in the NFL in scoring during his first season to seventh in 2024. Injuries, however, caught up to Glenn’s defense in the playoffs, as the Lions surrendered 45 points in Detroit’s divisional round playoff loss to the Commanders.
The Jets are once again in the market for a head coach after firing Robert Saleh just five games into the 2024 season. New York went 3-9 under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, who was recently tabbed as the Falcons‘ defensive coordinator.
In a recent update on the New York Jets’ search for a new head coach and general manager, it was reported that both Aaron Glenn and Lance Newmark left the Jets facility without securing deals. The Jets have been actively looking to fill these crucial roles after parting ways with Adam Gase and Joe Douglas.
Glenn, who is currently the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, was considered a top candidate for the head coaching position. However, it seems that negotiations did not progress as expected. Newmark, who is the assistant general manager for the Seattle Seahawks, was also in the running for the GM role but ultimately did not reach an agreement with the Jets.
The search for the right candidates continues for the Jets as they look to turn around their struggling franchise. Stay tuned for more updates on the coaching and GM search as the Jets aim to make the best decisions for their future success.
Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta, told the new president he was, “a day late and a dollar short.”
The first 24 hours of President Donald Trump‘s second term have come with a flurry of executive actions, including orders “restoring” the death penalty and reversing President Joe Biden’s executive order advancing racial equity throughout the federal government.
Just after midnight, following a series of inaugural events on Monday night, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to announce personnel changes to several presidential councils. “YOU’RE FIRED,” wrote the former host of “The Apprentice.”
Formerly Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was among the first names Trump announced as being terminated from their posts. Bottoms was appointed by President Biden to serve on the President’s Export Council, a national advisory committee on international trade.
Though it’s not surprising that Trump focused on Bottoms, a former Biden White House senior advisor, the newly inaugurated president’s move to fire the political appointee was too late as Bottoms had already quit the position. On Tuesday, Bottoms took to Instagram to share a letter of resignation she sent to President Biden on Jan. 4.
“In anticipation of the transition of the Administration, effective January 20, 2025, I am resigning as a member of the President’s Export Council. Thank you for the opportunity to serve,” Bottoms wrote to Biden.
Following Trump’s after-hours Truth Social post, Bottoms slammed President Trump for being “A day late and a dollar short.” She added, “You can’t fire someone who has already resigned.”

“Of all of the things happening in the world, not sure why I am on Donald Trump’s mind at 1:30 am following his Inauguration, but I count it as a badge of honor,” said Bottoms. She continued, “I do hope that his attention to detail will be much more keen when it comes to world affairs. There are real issues that need attention across the globe.”
Mark Milley, an Army general who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under both Presidents Trump and Biden, was also “fired” by Trump in his late-night post. Milley, who clashed with Trump during his first term, was appointed by Biden to the National Infrastructure Advisory Council. Trump also announced the termination of Brian Hook from the Wilson Center for Scholars and Jose Andres from the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.
Though, as president, Trump has the authority and discretion to appoint and unappoint as he pleases, Bottoms noted that there are far more important matters the 47th commander-in-chief should be focused on.
“No matter how you voted, I think we can all agree that targeting me, along with a man who is feeding displaced people in Los Angeles and a decorated military General in the early morning hours via social media is not the best use of time for the President of the United States,” she said.
More must-reads:
In a surprising turn of events, President Trump has announced that he has fired Keisha Lance Bottoms from his presidential council. However, Bottoms quickly took to social media to point out that she had already resigned from the council weeks ago.
In a tweet, Bottoms stated, “I resigned from the presidential council weeks ago, so I’m not sure what the President is talking about. It seems like he is just trying to create controversy where there is none.”
This latest development adds to the ongoing tensions between the President and Bottoms, who has been a vocal critic of Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and racial unrest in the country.
It remains to be seen how this latest incident will impact their already strained relationship, but one thing is for sure – Keisha Lance Bottoms is not one to back down without a fight. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
The New York Jets have scheduled a second interview on Tuesday with former Detroit Lions senior director of player personnel and current Washington Commanders assistant general manager Lance Newmark, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Per that report, Newmark is “said to have a strong relationship with both Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn,” both potential candidates for the Jets’ head-coaching vacancy. The Jets are looking to hire both a general manager and head coach this offseason, with Newmark now among the frontrunners for the former.
This article will be updated soon to provide more information and analysis.
The New York Jets are reportedly set to interview Washington Commanders’ executive Lance Newmark for their general manager position for a second time. This news comes as the Jets continue their search for a new GM to lead the team into the future.
According to reports, Newmark impressed the Jets during his initial interview and is now being brought back for further discussions. He is currently the Vice President of Player Personnel for the Commanders and has been praised for his eye for talent and strong leadership skills.
The Jets are looking to turn their franchise around after a disappointing season, and bringing in a seasoned executive like Newmark could be a step in the right direction. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

The Jets are starting a second round of head coaching interviews on Tuesday and they are also set for a second meeting with one of their General Manager candidates.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Commanders assistant G.M. Lance Newmark is set for another meeting with the Jets. Newmark has also interviewed with the Raiders.
Newmark joined the Commanders in 2024 and was with the Lions for more than two decades before moving to Washington. The quick turnaround that the Commanders were able to pull off after hiring Newmark is something the Jets would like to emulate with anyone they hire.
Newmark’s final three years in Detroit overlapped with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who will have his second interview with the Jets on Tuesday, and the Jets could wind up packaging them together to lead the franchise.
The New York Jets have announced that Lance Newmark, current assistant general manager, will be having his second interview for the vacant general manager position. Newmark, who has been with the organization for the past five years, is highly regarded for his player evaluation skills and strategic thinking.
With the Jets looking to rebuild and reshape their roster, Newmark’s experience and knowledge of the team’s needs make him a strong candidate for the job. Fans are hopeful that he will bring a fresh perspective and help lead the team to success in the upcoming seasons.
Stay tuned for updates on Lance Newmark’s interview and the Jets’ search for their new general manager. #Jets #GMinterview #LanceNewmark
Newmark got his start in the NFL as a staff assistant with the Chargers before joining the Lions’ front office in 1998. He spent 26 years in Detroit and worked his way up to senior director of player personnel.
Washington hired Newmark away as an assistant GM in 2024.
We will have more on Newmark and the Jets as it becomes available.
The New York Jets have scheduled a second interview with Lance Newmark for Tuesday, signaling that he is a top candidate for their head coaching position. Newmark, who currently serves as the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, has impressed the Jets with his innovative offensive schemes and leadership qualities.
The Jets are looking to revamp their coaching staff after a disappointing season, and Newmark could be the fresh perspective they need to turn things around. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the Jets continue their search for their next head coach.
The Washington Commanders haven’t had to worry much about their staff getting alluring glances from elsewhere in recent years. After all, perennial underachievement doesn’t exactly warrant interest.
That is changing.
Washington has gone from a laughingstock to a respectable operation under the new regime. They secured 12 wins and sixth place in the NFC’s playoff seeding after a campaign not many thought possible so early into a drastic rebuild. There is hope for the future and this sleeping giant has awoken much quicker than anticipated.
There is an aura surrounding Washington right now that cannot be ignored. Dan Quinn’s done an exceptional job in Year 1 of his head coaching tenure. General manager Adam Peters’ professionalism and ambition were a breath of fresh air in the front office after the dysfunction under Dan Snyder. The results speak for themselves.
The atmosphere around the organization is night and day to anything fans have experienced for decades. Washington is a trendy team again. They are also going to be an attractive destination for pending free agents when the time comes.
It’s not all good news.
Commanders’ staff being coveted is the price of newfound success
Struggling teams around the league always look to contenders for possible solutions, especially when it comes to any new openings they have to fill. They believe using this hiring method could bring a Midas Touch to their organizations. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t.
The hiring cycle interest in assistant general manager Lance Newmark and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury confirmed the Commanders’ new reality.
Staff members — be it in the front office or the coaching staff — are going to be coveted by others. That’s a good spot to be in because it means the Commanders are doing well. Losing key figures behind the scenes is collateral damage every team in the higher echelons of the league has to cope with effectively.
Newmark recently interviewed for the New York Jets general manager vacancy. Speculation also remains about whether Ben Johnson could look to bring him on board wherever he decides to become head coach thanks to their previous working relationship on the Detroit Lions. If not this year, a top job won’t be far away for the respected front office figure.
As for Kingsbury? He’s scheduled to interview with the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears for their head coaching vacancies in the coming days. Whether he wants to take the plunge again or will do enough for more serious consideration remains to be seen, but it shows that he’s got his foot back in the door after being fired by the Arizona Cardinals.
This is something the Commanders have to navigate. It’s the price of success in a copycat league. Forming the correct contingency plans and ensuring they have replacements lined up for any departure is the only way to keep the momentum going.
So long as the Commanders have Peters, Quinn, and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, they’ll be just fine. There will be comings and goings elsewhere, but this core trio represents the foundation for Washington to flourish in the coming years.
And nobody will be taking them away.
More Commanders news and analysis
The Washington Commanders have made a bold move by hiring Lance Newmark as their new head coach, and the team’s new reality is starting to take shape with the addition of Kliff Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator. The duo’s alluring presence on the sidelines is sure to bring a fresh energy and innovative approach to the team. Stay tuned as the Commanders embark on this exciting new chapter in their franchise history. #WashingtonCommanders #LanceNewmark #KliffKingsbury #NFL
