  • Everything LaNorris Sellers said previewing the Citrus Bowl

Everything LaNorris Sellers said previewing the Citrus Bowl

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers met with the media on Sunday. What did the Gamecocks’ star have to say about Citrus Bowl prep?

We have an edited transcript of his remarks here:

On his level of excitement for the game…

“I’m very excited. I mean, we’ve still got two days. We’ve just got walk-throughs tomorrow, then we got the game day. So, I’m excited and ready to play.”

On balancing activities with focus for the bowl…

“I’s just something I had to get used to. I was talking to my roommate about it yesterday. I was just like, it’s weird. It’s like kind of laid back, but like we’re preparing for a game at the same time, so it’s something I get used to.”

How sharp has the team looked in practice?

“We’ve looked pretty good. I mean, still like as much as fun as we’re having, like we put a lot in our practice, still getting good work in, but having fun at the same time.”

    On Illinois’ defense…

“Yeah, they mix in a little bit of swipe, a lot of man coverage. They’re kind of like an SEC defense. They do a lot. They’ve got a good front seven. So, we’ve got to take what we can.”

On Rocket’s absence and other backs stepping up…

“I feel really good about it. It comes down to really the offensive line, me, the wide receivers blocking stuff. As long as we do our job, we’re good.”

Will he run more during the game?

“I’m not really sure. I guess we’ll see on Tuesday.

    On improving for next season…

“This season, I’m just focusing on what’s working on this season. Then after the season, like after a game the Wednesday, we look at the film and just start from there.”

On his working with center Vershon Lee…

“Pretty good. It was smoother than I thought it was going to be but I knew from last year, I talked to a lot of guys last year so we just built up from last year and that was just close.”

On Josh Simon becoming his top receiver…

“He was a bigger body, experienced guy, so you know you can go to him. He’s been in college games and stuff. As the season progressed and stuff, we just got better and better.”

    On Shula’s transition to OC…

“He’s been there, been an OC before, so it’s not really a a big change for him but I mean he’s just going into it just getting comfortable with everybody and stuff like that.”

On last time an OC has called plays on field with him and if it’s a change…

“High school. High school’s the last time. Maybe for them, for me, it’s not. I mean, I just talk to them to see what they’re thinking.”

On whether or not schools had direct contact with him regarding NIL/transfer…

“No, I didn’t. No. I mean, not really like one-one-one talking like that, just rumors and all that.”

On guys playing their last game for USC and how special it is…

“Yeah, a lot of people care. Like we hear it around the hotel, the fun events like, man, it’s my last one, I want to go out with a win, I want to go out with a win. I want to get a double-digit win for the season for the first time in forever. It’s special to everybody, we’re just taking it as that.”

    On Illinois’ secondary…

“Just take what they give us. Don’t try to force anything. They try to like play games, disguise stuff real good. So just take what’s there and not really get fooled by it.”

What he likes about the team going forward…

“Really leadership and energy, like how we play together, like we come together with team bonding activities and all that. So I feel like the more closer we get, the better we’ll play. So, we’ve just got to build on that.”

Does he think about how important he is to the team?

“I don’t really think about it like that. I just think about it as like it’s our team. We just got to do what we got to do to win. Like we’re going out there, we’re playing. And like you said, playing quarterback, I’ve got to be the offense, do what we’re supposed to do, but also build up the team around me.”

On two new quarterbacks joining the room next year…

“I mean, it’s just like you said, it’s competition. So, just got to do what I supposed to do, focus on me, just let everything flow with me.”

Will he get sick of Cheez-Its after this?

    “Probably. A lot of Cheez-Its.”

    On his billboard…

“It was their idea. They just came, they talked, and it was like, hey , you want to do this Cheez-It thing It’s what we do for the Citrus Bowl and all that. I was like, yeah, I’ll do it. And then they came out here with a truck and everything. So, it’s exciting.”

LaNorris Sellers and brother will bring backyard ball to USC | Columbia

    Brother ball

Big and little brother played with each other in 2022 at South Florence, and Jayden is ready to join the fold, taking his talents to the collegiate level. But if LaNorris’ play has shown anything, this shouldn’t be a problem, and the people that have watched Puppy perform know that, too.

“(USC’s) getting an explosive athlete, a guy who can really accelerate quickly, has great hands, can catch the ball in traffic,” South Florence coach Drew Marlowe said. “He’s not afraid of anything.”

Jayden is a three-star recruit, a low rating considering how he has performed on the field. LaNorris was also a three-star when he flipped from Syracuse to South Carolina, so it must run in the family. Maybe subverting expectations is a Sellers tradition.

“He’s a hard worker, and he’s definitely true to his craft,” Norris Sellers, the father of both, said. “The biggest adjustment would be him being away from home. But for him to step up and be an important part of the team, I don’t think that’s hard for him.”

When Jayden joins the roster, he will be the third set of brothers that Beamer has. The others are Ronnie and Rondarius Porter, and Jalon and Gerald Kilgore.

“I love this aspect of it, that’s three sets of brothers we now have on our team. That makes a huge statement of what this program is about,” Beamer said at his signing day conference. “You have three brothers that their families felt good enough about the experience that their older son was having that wanted their younger son to be a part of this program.

“Even if mom and dad felt that way and it wasn’t real, the older brother could have been like, ‘This isn’t the place for you,’ but they all said, ‘No, come on down,’ and that’s what I am really proud of. So, I’m excited about Jayden coming to be a part of our program along with LaNorris.”

    South Carolina Clemson Football

LaNorris Sellers darted, cut, raced and out-paced Clemson defenders to the end zone for the game-winning touchdown, firmly planting himself into rivalry lore.

    Following suit

Dad had more questions about USC regarding LaNorris than he did with Jayden. He then saw what the Gamecocks were becoming, which confirmed his confidence in his other son playing a part.

Exciting news for USC | Columbia students and the local community! LaNorris Sellers and his brother are teaming up to bring backyard ball to the university campus.

LaNorris Sellers, a former college football player, and his brother have a passion for sports and want to create a fun and inclusive environment for students to come together and play backyard games like football, basketball, and even kickball.

They believe that physical activity and friendly competition can bring people together and create lasting memories. Their goal is to provide a space where students can relax, have fun, and build relationships outside of the classroom.

The Sellers brothers are working closely with the university to secure a location on campus for their backyard ball events. They are also planning to host tournaments, workshops, and other activities to engage the community and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

Stay tuned for more information on how you can get involved in the backyard ball movement at USC | Columbia. Get ready to grab your friends, lace up your sneakers, and join LaNorris and his brother for some friendly competition and good times!

  • Luke Doty and LaNorris Sellers on Mike Shula’s smooth transition to offensive coordinator

Luke Doty and LaNorris Sellers on Mike Shula’s smooth transition to offensive coordinator

Mike Shula’s recent promotion to offensive coordinator has resulted in nothing but praise from South Carolina quarterbacks. Both quarterback LaNorris Sellers and athlete Luke Doty say the transition has been smooth so far.

Doty, a redshirt senior, has spent some time with Shula thanks to his part-time quarterback role. However, he says that the relationships Shula has built with his players are strong and that he doesn’t expect anything different now that the former analyst is the Gamecocks’ offensive coordinator.

“I don’t think it’s changed a bit,” Doty said. “Shula’s been very involved. He was involved even when D-Lo (Dowell Loggains) was here. He definitely has done a great job with LaNorris as far as mechanics and stuff and D-Lo did a great job earlier this year, pretty much throughout the entire season. But Shula has definitely stepped in and took that role.”

With Shula’s help this year, Sellers has grown and developed into one of the country’s top rising stars. Shula’s guidance is something noticed by other players like Doty.

[Join GamecockCentral: $1 for 7 days]

“You can definitely tell just where he’s helped out and obviously D-Lo, too,” Doty said. “Just the things they have taught [Sellers] and just preparation for not only practice, meetings, but the game. How he approaches it, that all comes from those guys and Shula’s been great for him. He’s definitely been another set of eyes for LaNorris.”

For Sellers, Shula’s involvement made the transition a smooth one. Not much has changed for QB1 with Shula’s promotion.

“It’s not really a big change for him,” Sellers said. “He’s just growing into it, getting with people, everybody.”

During the Citrus Bowl, Shula will be calling plays from the field as the offensive coordinator. However, this doesn’t seem to pose any unfamiliarity for Sellers.

“Maybe for them [it might be different]. For me, I can just talk to him, see what he’s thinking,” Sellers said.
