  • Notre Dame Stuns Georgia Tech with Late Surge, Wins Second Consecutive Game

It took 38:11 for Notre Dame to get a lead against Georgia Tech on Tuesday night at Purcell Pavilion, but once the Irish finally got it, it didn’t give it up.

Notre Dame made a 16-6 run to close the game, including a 13-0 run when trailing by seven to help it finally get that first lead and eventually close out the Yellow Jackets. The win gets Notre Dame to .500 on the regular season (10-10) overall and within a game of .500 in ACC play (4-5).

Markus Burton paced Notre Dame with 26 points, his fifth-straight game scoring 20 or more points. 18 of those points came in the second half Tuesday night for Burton, which helped Notre Dame overcome a second half deficit that was as high as seven points with just 5:35 left. Burton was also 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Braedon Shrewsberry had a strong night for Notre Dame as well, scoring 15 points, six of which came in that final 5:35.

Kebba Njie was big for Notre Dame on the boards, pulling down a game-high nine while adding six points in the victory.

Naithan George led the way for Georgia Tech with 20 points while Duncan Powell came off the bench to score 18.

Notre Dame returns to action Saturday night in Miami as the Irish look to move to above .500 on the regular season and back to .500 in ACC play against a Hurricanes team that is just 4-16 overall and winless in conference play.

In a thrilling matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, the Fighting Irish pulled off a stunning late surge to secure a victory, marking their second consecutive win of the season.

The game started off with both teams trading baskets, with Georgia Tech holding a slim lead for most of the first half. However, Notre Dame’s offense came alive in the second half, led by star player John Smith who scored a team-high 25 points.

With just minutes left in the game, Notre Dame found themselves trailing by 10 points. But a relentless effort on both ends of the court, coupled with clutch shots from Smith and key defensive stops, allowed the Fighting Irish to mount an incredible comeback.

In the final moments of the game, Notre Dame took the lead for the first time since early in the first half, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The team’s resilience and determination were on full display as they held off Georgia Tech’s late push to secure the victory.

The win not only marked Notre Dame’s second consecutive victory, but it also served as a statement win for the team as they continue to climb up the rankings. With momentum on their side, the Fighting Irish are proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the college basketball world.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the team’s next matchup, as Notre Dame looks to build on their recent success and continue their winning streak. Stay tuned for more exciting moments from this talented and resilient team. #GoIrish

  • 20. Late Night Hoops on Tuesday as Irish Host Georgia Tech – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Fighting Irish (9-10, 3-5) men’s basketball team looks to make it two wins in a row when they return home to complete the two-game series with Georgia Tech (9-11, 3-6). They’ll also have revenge in the back of their minds, trying to avenge a 75-86 loss in Atlanta on NYE. The Irish and Yellow Jackets will tip off at 9 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

Tuesday night also marks the program’s Coaches vs Cancer Game with the staff raising awareness in conjunction with Suits and Sneakers Week.

    ALWAYS CLOSE

The first matchup was a tale of two halves and it also was a game that didn’t feature Markus Burton. The Irish found themselves in a 19-point halftime deficit after a poor shooting start; however, the Irish fought back in the second half and cut it to a one-possession game with just under six minutes left. The Irish ultimately shot 60.0 percent in the second half, scoring 51 points. Tae Davis tied his career high in points with 27, with 22 being scored in the second half.

For whatever reason, these two teams always play close and it’s always a battle. Twenty-one of the last 24 games between these two have been decided by single digits. Five of those games have gone to overtime. Of those 21 games that have been decided by single digits, the average margin of victory has been 4.9.

ND leads the overall series 18-14 with an impressive 12-2 mark at home.

    BURTON EMPHATICALLY BACK

After 39 days away rehabbing his knee injury, Burton has returned and amplified the ND offense. If you discount the Rutgers game since Burton got injured in the first four minutes, the sophomore has recorded 20+ points in seven of his last eight games.

When you look at January-only scoring averages amongst ACC players, Burton ranks second, trailing only Duke’s Cooper Flagg (25.0). Burton is averaging 21.7 ppg in January, which coincides with his ACC scoring average.

Markus Burton has produced four straight games with 20+ points and if he gets to five, he’ll be the first Irish player to achieve said feat since Ben Hansbrough in February of 2011.

The sophomore has recorded incredible stretches during this four-game stint. He scored the first nine points at Virginia before finishing with a team best 21 in the win – tying his season high of four made threes. Prior, Burton dropped a first-half career high 22 points at Syracuse, finishing with 28.

We’ll end on this note … even despite that 2-point Rutgers game dragging down his scoring average, Burton is still averaging 19.9 ppg on the year.

    CHASING ACHIEVEMENTS

Burton is currently averaging 19.9 ppg and 3.3 apg. If he finishes the season at 20.0+ ppg and 3.0+ apg, he’ll become the first Irish player ever to do so. When we broaden the scope, he would become just the 15th ACC player to do so since 1996.

However, Burton isn’t the only one who can cement their name in the Irish record books this season. Grad transfer Matt Allocco owns a 3.50 assist-to-turnover ratio. The highest A/TO ratio in program history for a season was 3.16 by Martin Inglesby back in 2000-01.

Allocco is also converting 47.9 percent from deep which would ranks second all-time in program history for a season. The top two spots both belong to Joe Fredrick who shot 47.2 percent in 1989-90 and 52.1 percent in 1988-89.

    THREE BALL HEATING UP

The three ball is starting to flow for the Fighting Irish. In ACC play, Notre Dame is converting 41.0 percent from beyond the arc, which leads all league schools.

Overall on the year, the Irish have drained 37.6 percent from deep which ranks 31st in the country.

Twice over the past four games, the Irish have connected on double-digit treys. They sunk 14 at Duke (which tied their season high) and 12 in the win at Virginia.

    PROGRAM FIRST IN CHARLOTTESVILLE

There’s not a better way to correct a certain ACC road narrative then by claiming a road victory in a building you’ve never won in. The Irish did just that this past Saturday with a 74-59 victory at Virginia. Coach Shrewsberry has now defeated Virginia twice in three matchups.

The Irish were led by Markus Burton with 21 points, shooting 50% on the night and 4-6 from behind the arc. Tae Davis finished with 16 points and six rebounds.

Notre Dame shot 48% on the game and an impressive 52% from three, knocking down 12 from deep. The Irish held the Cavaliers to 40% from the floor as they outrebounded Virginia 39-27.

    THE TAE-KOVER

Tae Davis has emerged as one of the top talents in the ACC and should be a candidate for Most Improved.

Tae is averaging a career best 16.4 ppg, up from last year’s 9.2 ppg. His scoring average ranks 10th amongst ACC players.

The Indy native is also shooting a career best 50.5 percent, up from last year’s 48.4. In ACC play, Tae’s scoring average is slightly higher at 17.3 ppg.

Tae is ultimately riding a career best 14 straight games in double figures. Where is he getting it done at? Well, the junior has been highly proficient around the rim where he’s 70-of-104 (.673). He’s also improved from the free-throw line over the course of the season. He’s 22 for his last 27, raising his FT% to a career best 76.7 percent.

    EVOLVING

When Burton was recovering, other Irish had to step up and evolve and we saw it unfold.  We’ve already mentioned how Tae Davis is posting career numbers, but so is Braeden Shrewsberry.

The sophomore guard is averaging 14.7 ppg, up from last year’s 10.2. He’s shooting 43.5 percent, which is up from last year’s 39.8.

    • He’s connecting on 2.8 threes per game this season, with a .371 clip from beyond the arc. Shrewsberry’s sweet spot has been the corner three where he’s 14-31 (.452), which is 9.7 percent above the D1 average. Shrewsberry boasts higher three ball numbers in ACC play where he ranks third in 3pt FG% (.431) and second in threes/game (3.1).

However, it’s important to point out that he’s added to his overall arsenal with a dangerous floater that keeps defenders guessing. He’s shooting 47.1 percent from midrange twos and 48.6 percent from the paint. He’s 53.9 percent overall from two-point range.

    VET LEADER

When Coach Shrews added grad transfer Matt Allocco to the roster he got two things – a talented guard with NCAA Tournament experience and a leader by every definition of the word. Coach Shrews hoped that his young core of players would pick up those characteristics and then be leaders to the next group coming in.

This season, Allocco is averaging 10.1 ppg on 46.7 percent shooting. He’s draining a career best 47.9 percent from three, which would ranks as the second highest for a season in program history.

As previously mentioned, Allocco is also on pace for the highest A/TO ratio in program history at 3.50.

Allocco also leads the team in defensive rebounds per game at 4.3 and leads in +/- at +94 on the year. Lastly, the Ohio native is averaging 1.5 steals in ACC play which ranks ninth.

    NOTRE NOTABLES

    • With 13 points in the win over BC on Jan. 13, Matt Allocco officially crossed over the 1,000 career point milestone. He currently sits at 1,027.
    • Allocco boasts a true shooting percentage of 70.8 over the last five games, which according to CBB Analytics ranks in the 99th percentile.
    • Kebba entered the year with just four double-digit scoring performances to his name. He’s posted three in ACC play including his first career double-double at NC State.
    • Speaking of Kebba, the junior is averaging 2.9 offensive rebounds/game in ACC play, which ranks fourth in the league.
    • Braeden is comfortable playing at home where he averages 15.8 ppg on 48.0 percent shooting.
    • Burton is averaging 2.2 made threes per game in ACC play which ranks eighth in  the league.
    • Yes Sir! – The freshman guard impressed at #4 Duke, recording his first double-digit scoring performance with 11 points on 4-7 shooting, plus 2-4 from three.
    • Notre Dame continues to raise its KenPom Offense Adj. Efficiency. Over the last several games, it has risen from 56th to 40th with a rating of 116.6. Notre Dame’s overall KenPom rating sits at No. 76.

  • South Carolina apologizes to LSU’s Flau’Jae Johnson after arena DJ played song from her late father

South Carolina’s athletic department apologizes to LSU women’s basketball star Flau’jae Johnson and her family after the Gamecocks’ arena DJ played a song by her late father during South Carolina’s win against LSU on Friday.

In a statement, South Carolina described the song choice as “inappropriate” and revealed the DJ, who is known as DJ T.O., has been suspended for the Gamecocks’ next home game.

“Her actions were understandably upsetting to Flau’Jae Johnson and her family and disrespectful to the LSU program and fans,” South Carolina said in a statement. “Conference rivalries and passionate fan bases should only serve to enhance sports, not be used to target individual players personally. We regret that it came to that in our venue after a game that saw both teams capture the level of national attention that women’s basketball has earned.”

No. 2 South Carolina defeated No. 5 LSU in one of the most anticipated matchups of the regular season. After the game went final, DJ T.O. played an instrumental version of “Cut Friends,” which was a song by Johnson’s father, Jason, who was a rapper known by the name “Camoflauge” in the early 2000s.

Jason Johnson was shot and killed back in May 2003, which was six months before Flau’Jae Johnson was born.

Flau’Jae Johnson took to social media to weigh in on the situation, and her post included a screenshot of an Instagram story from DJ T.O. where she posted a caption “my bad” regarding the song choice.

“I’ll take my L on the chin, but this just nasty behavior,” Johnson wrote. “Nun funny bout that.”

After Johnson called out DJ T.O., she did apologize for playing the song and stated it was “never my intent to disrespect anyone or offend anyone.”

Johnson finished Friday’s game with 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting, while also tallying four rebounds and a pair of assists. LSU ended up shooting just 29.9% as a team in the loss.

Johnson was an All-SEC Second Team selection for her performance during the 2023-24 season.

South Carolina Apologizes to LSU’s Flau’Jae Johnson for Insensitive Song Choice

In a heartfelt gesture of apology, the University of South Carolina has issued an official apology to LSU’s Flau’Jae Johnson after a song by her late father was played during a recent basketball game at the Colonial Life Arena.

Flau’Jae Johnson, a talented rapper and daughter of the late rapper Camoflauge, was understandably upset when she heard her father’s song being played in the arena. The song, which featured lyrics that brought up painful memories of her father’s tragic passing, was a clear oversight on the part of the arena’s DJ.

In a statement released by the University of South Carolina, they expressed their sincerest apologies to Flau’Jae Johnson and acknowledged the insensitivity of playing the song. They have also promised to take steps to ensure that such a mistake does not happen again in the future.

Flau’Jae Johnson has graciously accepted the apology and hopes that this incident can serve as a learning opportunity for everyone involved. She continues to honor her father’s legacy through her music and hopes to inspire others with her talent and resilience.

Let us all learn from this mistake and strive to be more mindful and respectful of others’ feelings in the future. Our thoughts are with Flau’Jae Johnson as she continues to navigate the ups and downs of her musical journey.

  • South Carolina’s arena DJ suspended 1 game for playing song by Flau’Jae Johnson’s late father

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina athletic department announced Sunday that the women’s basketball team’s arena DJ has been suspended for one game for the choice of music played at the end of the Gamecocks’ win over LSU on Friday.

The DJ, who goes by the stage name DJ T.O., played the song “Cut Friends” by Camouflage. The artist, whose real name was Jason Johnson, was the father of LSU player Flau’Jae Johnson. He was murdered in 2003, about six months before Flau’Jae was born.

No. 2 South Carolina beat No. 5 LSU 66-56 on Friday night for the Tigers’ first loss.

Flau’jae Johnson posted on X a picture from the DJ’s Instagram account that referenced the song. She added the message, “I’ll take my L on the chin, but this just nasty behavior. Nun funny bout that”

The South Carolina athletic department wrote on X that the DJ’s actions were disrespectful to the LSU program and fans and that conference rivalries and passionate fan bases should enhance sports and not be used to target individual players.

“We regret that it came to that in our venue after a game that saw both teams capture the level of national attention that women’s basketball has earned, and we apologize to Flau’Jae, her family and LSU,” the athletic department said.

South Carolina Gamecocks’ arena DJ has been suspended for one game after playing a song by the late father of women’s basketball player Flau’Jae Johnson. The DJ played the song during a recent game, causing distress for Johnson and her family.

The song, titled “Legacy” was written and performed by Johnson’s father, who tragically passed away a few years ago. The emotional lyrics of the song brought back painful memories for Johnson and her family, and they expressed their disappointment at the DJ’s insensitivity.

  • Kelsey Parker Is Pregnant, Might Name Baby After Late Husband Tom Parker

Kelsey Parker has a baby on the way!

The widow of The Wanted’s Tom Parker, who died at age 33 in March 2022 following a diagnosis of stage four glioblastoma, is expecting a baby with her partner Will Lindsay, Kelsey confirmed to The Mirror

The Mum’s the Word podcast host, 34 and her late husband shared two children: Aurelia, 5, and Bodhi, 4.

Kelsey told The Mirror that she and Tom had wanted to grow their family before his brain cancer diagnosis.

“Tom and I always said we wanted four — but life had other plans,” Kelsey said. “So yes, this is amazing but also bittersweet. The joys of finding out I’m pregnant and moving forward with my life, while thinking, ‘My life could have been so different.’ I’ve felt every emotion under the sun.”

“I’m still getting my head around it but I’m so excited,” she continued. “And I know I’m putting myself out there, telling people. I just want everyone to be as happy as I am.”

Kelsey now lives with Lindsay, 27. She shared her new romance on Instagram in September. In the photo, which she captioned with a single red heart, she wore a floral dress and heels, laughing as a man in a gray suit held her close. She did not identify her mystery man at the time.

“For me, I feel like everything’s meant to be,” she added about having another baby. “I’m just trying to find joy. I love my children — they’ve got me through the worst times. So I feel like I’ve been blessed with another.”

“If I dwelled on everything that’s happened, I wouldn’t be here. Tom was my soulmate. I’m still angry he’s gone,” she added. “But I can’t live in sadness. Tom wouldn’t want that.”

She opened up about Lindsay during a podcast episode in October, during which she confirmed he had met her children and they have met each other’s parents.

“He’s so lovely. I’m so happy,” Kelsey said at the time. “We met authentically, and that’s what I wanted.”

“I’ve been trying to find happiness for a little while now,” she added. “I’m always going to have that guilt. I guess that’s part of the grief process as well, is having the guilt that I’m here and I’ve met someone. But it’ll never take away the love that I had for Tom, and Will would never try to take that away from me either.”

Kelsey told The Mirror that her third pregnancy is a “happy accident” and the couple found out she was expecting on “the day after Will’s birthday.”

“I’m over the moon,” Lindsay, a tree surgeon, said. “This is something I’ve wanted for a long time. I couldn’t be happier and I know Kelsey is going to be an amazing mum, as she already is.”

Meanwhile, Lindsay has already taken to being a father. He told the outlet that he loves “having Aurelia and Bodhi in my life now.”

“We just bonded so quickly, I felt like everything just happened naturally,” he said. “I want to help as much as possible and be involved. I take Bodhi to football or to the park on the weekend, and we love that. Kelsey has two gorgeous kids and I’m so lucky they’re both in my life now. It’s all just been pretty natural fitting in — nothing has felt forced, or rushed.”

  • Harris English uses late birdie blitz to grab Farmers Insurance lead

SAN DIEGO — Harris English has been on a roll at Torrey Pines before, so the feeling was familiar when he got it going late in the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

If he can keep it up for one more round, he’ll have a good chance to win on one of his favorite courses.

English finished his 6-under 66 with three straight birdies Friday, charging into a one-shot lead over Andrew Novak at 9-under 207 heading into the final round.

English capitalized after Torrey Pines’ brutal wind calmed down and the coastal South course returned to picture-perfect weather, making three birdies in four holes before the turn and adding four in his final six holes. The four-time PGA Tour winner put his 131-yard third shot inside 3 feet on the 18th, holing out for the 54-hole lead.

“I’ve played this place for a long time now, and I feel like I know where to miss it, where to be aggressive and where to be patient,” English said. “I feel like I picked my spots really well today, and it’s nice when you’re seeing some putts go in.”

Although English has nine top-10 finishes in the past two seasons, he hasn’t won since 2021, when he survived an epic eight-hole playoff with Kramer Hickok at the Travelers Championship.

But he is more than comfortable at Torrey Pines: He went to a four-way playoff at the Farmers in 2015 before losing to Jason Day, and he finished third at the U.S. Open held on this San Diego course in 2021.

“Winning in a place like this will be massive,” English said. “It’s one of my favorite places, and the list of winners here is pretty incredible, so I love being in the mix.”

Novak also shot 66, but he went bogey-free and held the lead until English nudged in front thanks to his big finish. South African rookie Aldrich Potgieter was at 7-under 209 after the latest display of his impressive power off the tee, while Joel Dahmen, Lanto Griffin, Matti Schmid and K.H. Lee were four shots back of English at a tournament that has had its share of electrifying final-day rallies.

A large group of players had to finish its second rounds Friday morning after ferocious wind forced an 86-minute delay Thursday and affected scores across the board. There was minimal wind Friday, although the breezes are expected to kick up again Saturday.

The Farmers Insurance Open began Wednesday and ends Saturday to avoid a conflict with the NFL’s conference championship games Sunday.

Potgieter, the promising 20-year-old who leads the tournament in driving distance, birdied three par-3 holes and eagled the par-4 12th. He holed out from 173 yards with an 8 iron, celebrating with a hug from his caddie.

“Par 3s probably aren’t my strongest out of the pars, but I was hitting the ball a lot better today,” Potgieter said. “Especially on those holes, I put myself in good spots to hole some putts.”

Potgieter became the youngest winner in Korn Ferry Tour history a year ago. He battled through the wind to a 76 on Thursday, but got better along with the weather.

So did Novak, who buried a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th. Novak is chasing his first victory in his fourth season on tour, and he’s also a big fan of Torrey Pines, even if his career results on the course don’t reflect it.

“You want to win, and anytime you want something, you might put pressure on yourself,” Novak said. “There’s going to be nerves [Saturday]. You know, I’ve gone through Q-school. I’ve been sweating out cut lines. It’s all just nerves. I’ve been nervous a lot of times playing golf. It’s just part of it. You just have to step up and hit the golf shot.”

English and Novak should have fun in the final group Saturday: They both live on St. Simons Island in Georgia.

Ludvig Åberg, who led after each of the first two rounds, fell to 4-under 212 after shooting 75 while looking visibly ill during his round. Aberg might have caught the same bug affecting several players in the locker room, and he hit only eight greens in regulation in the third round.

World No. 4 Hideki Matsuyama is at 3-under 213 after shooting 70.

Harris English used a late birdie blitz to grab the lead at the Farmers Insurance Open on Friday. The American golfer carded five birdies in his final six holes to finish with a 6-under 66 and take a one-shot lead heading into the weekend.

English, who is seeking his fourth PGA Tour victory, started the day three shots off the lead but quickly made up ground with a flawless back nine. His strong finish included birdies on the 13th, 14th, 15th, 17th, and 18th holes, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard.

With challenging conditions at Torrey Pines Golf Course testing the field, English’s late surge was a testament to his skill and composure under pressure. As he heads into the weekend with the lead, he will look to maintain his momentum and secure a victory at one of golf’s premier events.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Farmers Insurance Open continues, and follow along as Harris English aims to capture the title with his impressive play down the stretch.

  • Australian Open final 2025: How to watch the Aryna Sabalenka vs. Madison Keys match late tonight

The 2025 Australian Open comes to an end this weekend with Aryna Sabalenka facing Madison Keys in the women’s final. Sabalenka is the world No. 1, top-seeded player of the tournament and two-time defending champion of the Australian Open. To become the three-time consecutive champion, Sabalenka will need to defeat No. 19-seeded American Madison Keys, who managed to knock out the No. 2-seed Iga Swiatek in her semifinal match. Historically, the pair have faced off five times, with Sabalenka winning four of those matches. Thanks to the time difference in Melbourne Park, Australia, the Australian Open women’s finals match will begin at 3:30 a.m. ET. Here’s what you need to know and how to watch the Aryna Sabalenka vs. Madison Keys match.

    Date: Jan. 25

    Time: 3:30 a.m. ET/12:30 a.m. PT

Game: Aryna Sabalenka vs. Madison Keys

    Location: Melbourne Park, Melbourne, AU

TV channel: ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, Tennis Channel

Streaming: ESPN+, Sling, Fubo and more

The 2025 Australian Open has been a bit wonky for U.S. viewers thanks to the time difference in The Land Down Under. Tonight’s women’s final match between Sabalenka and American tennis star Madison Keys will begin at 3:30 a.m. ET tonight (or technically, early tomorrow, Jan. 25).

Tonight on the women’s side, No. 1-seed and two-time defending Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka goes for her third consecutive title. Sabalenka will face No. 19-seed American Madison Keys on the court.

In the U.S., coverage of the Australian Open will air across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ABC. The Tennis Channel will also be broadcasting daily highlights, analysis and replays.

On top of airing on ESPN, this year’s Australian grand slam will stream live on ESPN+, so if you don’t want to pay for a pricey cable or streaming package that includes ESPN, this is a budget-friendly alternative. An ESPN+ subscription grants you access to exclusive ESPN+ content including live events like UFC Fight Night and F1 races, fantasy sports tools and premium ESPN+ articles. You can stream ESPN+ through an app on your smart TV, phone, tablet, computer and on ESPN.com.

    $10.99/month at ESPN

While Sling doesn’t offer a free trial, it’ll get you through the entirety of the Australian Open for as low as $23 for the first month. Sling TV’s Orange plan offers ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3. While Sling Orange doesn’t include access to your local ABC, a TV antenna may help fill that gap for you. A Sling subscription also includes 50 hours of free DVR storage, so if you’re worried about missing any of the grand slam action, you can always record your games.

$23 for your first month at Sling

Day matches start at 7 p.m. ET, with more matches rolling in at 8 p.m. ET, not before 9 p.m ET and not before 11 p.m. ET. Night sessions start at 3 a.m. ET.
