The Miami Heat are suspending Jimmy Butler for two games, per multiple reports, including ESPN. Butler missed the team’s flight on Wednesday for Thursday’s matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks, but had plans to join the team Wednesday evening. However, the team decided instead to suspend him from the upcoming two-game road trip, which also includes a game against the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday.
This is the second time Butler has been suspended this month, and the latest twist in a weekslong saga about Butler’s future in Miami. The previous suspension was a seven-game ban for “multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team.” It ended last Friday, and Butler had appeared in the Heat’s last three games. If he’s still on the Heat roster by next week, Butler would be eligible to play again on Jan. 27 against the Magic.
In December, rumors started swirling about Butler possibly wanting a trade out of Miami. Heat exec Pat Riley said on Dec. 26 that the team would not be trading Butler. Butler then publicly made comments in early January saying he had no interest in being part of the Heat organization, and in the Heat’s formal announcement of his first suspension they said “Through his actions and statements, [Butler] has shown he no longer wants to be part of the team.”
The Phoenix Suns are seen as the leading candidate to land Butler in a trade ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline and his reported preferred destination. Though a deal with the Suns would be difficult as they lack the assets Miami wants in return for Butler. As of right now there haven’t been any other reported teams interested in taking on Butler, who has played in just 25 games and is averaging 17 points, his lowest point total since the 2018-19 season.
Ironically, that was when Butler requested a trade from Minnesota to Philadelphia in a situation where he made headlines for, in part, leading the third-string Timberwolves players to a win in practice over the starters. That came after Butler was away from the team for three weeks after requesting a trade, which eventually came to his preferred destination of the Sixers.
While Butler isn’t using the same antics with the Heat as he did in Minnesota, he’s still causing enough of a headache for Miami to want to suspend him. For Butler’s part, this could be seen as a tactic to try and pressure the Heat into getting a deal done quickly, though there’s no reason for Miami to rush this process.
The Heat have maintained that they want players who can help the team win right now, and given the team’s history they’re unlikely to budge on that. If Phoenix is where Butler wants to go, the Suns will need to do all the heavy lifting to get a trade package put together that will undoubtedly require the help from at least a third, possibly fourth or fifth team to get a deal done.
The Miami Heat have reportedly suspended Jimmy Butler for the second time in the latest twist of his ongoing trade saga. The disgruntled star has been punished by the team for his actions, which have caused tension within the organization.
Butler’s suspension comes after he expressed his desire to be traded from the Heat, citing a lack of support from the front office and his frustration with the team’s performance. This is the second time the Heat have suspended him in recent weeks, as they look to maintain control over the situation.
The decision to suspend Butler is a bold move by the Heat, who are clearly sending a message to their star player that his behavior will not be tolerated. While Butler’s future with the team remains uncertain, it is clear that the Heat are taking a firm stance in this trade saga.
As the situation continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how Butler responds to his suspension and whether or not he will be able to mend his relationship with the Heat. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
The Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline is 15 days away, so we’re right in the thick of when all the rumors around the league will start to pick up. Jimmy Butler is the most talked about trade piece right now, with the Phoenix Suns being eyed as the frontrunner to land him if a trade were to transpire. But there’s other names around the league that have been circulated, which will only continue as the window closes on teams being able to make moves in hopes of improving their title odds right now, or positioning themselves for the future.
Here’s the latest around the league on Butler’s trade status, as well as everything else circulating before the trade deadline on Feb. 6.
Suns don’t have ‘specific’ move lined up after swapping picks
The Phoenix Sunsmade a trade Tuesday night that has everyone around the league wondering if a bigger move could be on the horizon. The Suns sent their only tradable first-round pick (in 2031) to the Utah Jazz in exchange for three future first-round picks. The picks heading to Phoenix are the least favorable of several picks owned by Utah in 2025, 2027 and 2029.
It was one of those moves that makes you wonder what other move is around the corner, because a fringe championship contender doesn’t swap around picks without it leading to the potential of landing a player, or players. Especially since the Suns have been long rumored to covet Jimmy Butler, who has grown disgruntled with the Miami Heat. Tuesday’s move could be seen as Phoenix taking a big step in trying to acquire Butler, but it’s not a foregone conclusion.
The Suns made the trade Tuesday night “without a specific follow-up move lined up,” according to NBA insider Marc Stein. Take that however you want, but we’ve seen our fair share of smoke and mirrors by teams, agents and players in the past only for the exact opposite to happen.
While it may be difficult to believe that Phoenix just wanted to flip one draft pick for three, Stein did note that the Suns still have not yet presented any trade ideas to Bradley Beal, who would need to be the one shipped elsewhere if Phoenix wanted to land Butler. Beal’s no-trade clause gives him all the power, and both he and the Suns have lamented that there have been no discussions about moving him. However, if the right situation presented itself, Beal would reportedly waive his no-trade clause.
Jimmy Butler mock trades: Suns in position for blockbuster, but they’ll need help from Bucks and others
Sam Quinn
But even if Beal agreed to be traded elsewhere, and the Suns had enough to get Butler, the other piece to this puzzle is it would almost certainly need to include a third, possibly fourth and maybe even fifth team to get this done. Because the Suns are a second- apron team, they’re limited in how they’re able to conduct trades. Phoenix can’t aggregate players in any trades and it can’t take on more money than its sending out, which makes this whole situation complicated.
However, if what Stein is reporting is true, and the Suns aren’t just focusing on trying to land Butler, they could use those three first round picks to improve the roster in other ways. It would still likely include sending Beal (and possibly Jusuf Nurkic) elsewhere, but maybe it’s not for another aging star with injury issues, but rather a couple quality role players that amount to the same price.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Once mid-January rolls around, LeBron James becomes a bit more expressive to the media about the current status of his team, which serve as not-so-subtle messages to the Lakers front office to improve the roster around him. This time, though, LeBron isn’t the only one sending messages in L.A.
According to ESPN, both James and Davis are “growing concerned” about L.A.’s ability to significantly improve its roster by using its two tradable first-round picks. The Lakers have been holding onto those picks for dear life over the years, and famously elected to not use either at least season’s deadline despite the lackluster collection of talent surrounding their two star players. In all fairness, the Lakers are in a tough spot. If they trade two first-round picks (in 2029 and 2031) to get James and Davis some supplemental help, only for James to retire after next season, they will have mortgaged their future for the sake of two years. If they don’t use those picks, then they’ll be wasting the twilight years of LeBron as well as the last few years of Davis’ prime.
Both Davis and James have reportedly expressed to the front office that they want the team to make moves in order to contend for a title, but up to this point, the Lakers have not done so. We’ll have to see if this is the year they finally go all-in an spend those picks.
Lakers’ LeBron James has seemingly begun his annual campaign to convince the team to make a trade
Sam Quinn
The Bulls may finally get that full reset after all. Both LaVine and Vucevic have been available for some time, yet there have been no buyers for either. The Bulls tried to move LaVine last season — with the Lakers previously interested — but an injury to the sharpshooting guard ended that plot point. Now, though in the midst of strong seasons from both players, Chicago is getting calls from teams around the league for potential trades, per ESPN.
That doesn’t mean the Bulls will be successful in trading both or even one of these guys, teams could just be doing their due diligence and kicking the tires. But it’s a positive note that there’s a chance of Chicago getting off at least one of those contracts and finally entering a new era. The Bulls have been in a desperate need of a hard reset, and trading LaVine and Vucevic is the first step in accomplishing that. They’ve already won too many games to take themselves out of the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes, but if they manage to get rid of just one of their two highest-paid players, it will help them not lose their top-10 protected pick in next June’s draft.
The NBA trade rumors mill is always churning, and two of the biggest names in the league are reportedly feeling uneasy about their current situations.
According to sources, LeBron James and Anthony Davis are said to be “concerned” about the direction of the Los Angeles Lakers and their chances of contending for a championship. Despite their star power, the Lakers have struggled in recent seasons and failed to make a deep playoff run.
This has led to speculation that either James or Davis could be looking to make a move in the near future, especially if the Lakers are unable to turn things around quickly.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns are reportedly still in pursuit of Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler. The Suns have been linked to Butler in trade rumors for several months now, and it appears that they are still keen on acquiring the All-Star forward.
With the NBA trade deadline looming, it will be interesting to see how these rumors play out and if any big moves are made in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more updates on the ever-evolving landscape of the NBA trade market.

Snow covering roads | 9:32 p.m. update
As the Wilmington area enters the Winter Storm Warning time frame, snow was already coating many roads.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office posted photos on its Facebook page and noted the wintry mix snow is “coming down hard, and conditions are going downhill faster than a sled on a steep hill.”
It resulted in two Brunswick bridges being closed Tuesday night.
The Holden Beach Bridge was closed by officials, citing on the town’s Facebook page that “a near collision and loss of control has pushed us to make the tough decision to close the bridge to all traffic. We will advise the public as soon as conditions allow for safer travel.”
The Odell Williamson Bridge at Ocean Isle Beach is also closed to all traffic. Increased accumulation of winter precipitation has created unsafe traveling conditions.
After lull, snow returns | 7:43 p.m. update
After a brief lull, precipitation began to pick up after 7 p.m. in the Wilmington area. Snow showers are expected to accelerate after 9 p.m., according to The Weather Channel. Chances of snow will be above 80% from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m. Up to six inches of snow is expected to fall throughout the night until the storm clears around 6 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, if the area sees more than five inches of snow it’ll mark the largest snowfall since a 1989 storm brought Wilmington a white Christmas.
Temperatures will continue to drop into the low 20s as the storm moves through the region. Skies will be cloudy on Wednesday morning with little chance of precipitation throughout the day.
Snow arrives | 5:20 p.m. update
Precipitation arrived in the Wilmington area after 4 p.m. Sleet was reported in Leland before snow began to fall around 5 p.m.
Snow started falling in Wilmington just after 5 p.m. Occasional snow is likely to continue over the next few hours, according to The Weather Channel.
Cell service outages | 3:45 p.m. update

A timeline shows snowfall projected to last throughout the night along with temperatures as low as 22 degrees.
Residents have reported cellphone outages across the Wilmington area ahead of the arrival of the winter storm. Outages are affecting both AT&T and Verizon customers. Verizon is aware of the issue and is working on a solution, according to the company’s website. The outage impacted three NWS radio transmitters in Winnabow, Aynor and St. Pauls but have all since been returned to service.
Here is a map of the reported AT&T outages in the area:
No known internet outages have been reported at this time.
All classes at the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Wednesday are canceled. The UNCW campus will remain closed through Wednesday.
Increasing snow expectations | 2 p.m. update

The Winter Storm Warning from the weather service in Wilmington remains in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Many municipality and county facilities are closing up early today and remaining closed tomorrow. Some towns, like Carolina Beach, are planning to reopen Wednesday afternoon depending on the weather.
If driveways need to be shoveled, the weather service in Wilmington reminds people to dress warm, stay hydrated, take breaks and be cautious. Shoveling wet, heavy wet snow could lead to injuries or a heart attack.
Drivers needing to travel during the snowfall are advised to pack an extra flashlight, food and water in the vehicle in case of an emergency.
The latest road conditions for the state can be obtained by calling 511.
With snow and ice in the forecast for the Wilmington area, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is spraying anti-ice solution and preparing roads for the winter weather.
Department workers began spreading salt brine, a mixture of salt and water, along roads on Sunday to prepare for the potentially snowy weather, New Hanover County NCDOT Maintenance Engineer Blake Jacobs said.
All NCDOT departments keep salt on hand for winter weather like this, he said. Salt is used to create the “anti-ice” solution to prepare roads for snow and again used to de-ice roads after icy weather hits.
The NCDOT engineers ask drivers to watch out for NCDOT vehicles treating roads and stay home once ice or snow start falling.
Latest school closings and schedule changes | 11 a.m. update
Schools in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties have announced schedule changes for this week because of the impending winter weather. You can see the latest information here.
Possibility of snow accumulation increases | 9 a.m. update
In its Tuesday morning briefing, the National Weather Service in Wilmington said the highest accumulation rates are expected Tuesday night, with precipitation ending Wednesday morning.
Most likely amounts are 1 to 3 inches, but locally higher amounts, especially along the coast, are possible, the weather service said.
The snow is expected to create dangerous driving conditions, and snow covering walkways, steps, and other areas will enhance the risk for slips/falls, according to the briefing.
“Very cold air will reside across the area today, and the abnormally cold temperatures will persist through the week,” the weather service said. “Make sure people and pets exposed to the cold are safe, and pipes/plants are protected.”
It’s a bone-chilling morning as dipped into the 20s. Temperatures in the Wilmington area on Tuesday are not expected to break 40 degrees.
Snow is expected to begin falling between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service in Wilmington announced.
“Due to moisture offshore shifting closer to the coast, expected snowfall totals have increased a bit,” the weather service posted early Tuesday morning.
Drivers should drive with caution starting tonight, as slippery road conditions are expected to begin at around 6 p.m. and continue into Wednesday.
Potential for freezing rain later in the week has decreased, the weather service said. But it is still a possibility.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is holding a media briefing at 10 a.m. to discuss preparation for the winter weather. More information on the department’s plan will be published following the press conference.
How much snow will we get in Wilmington? | 6 a.m. update
As of Tuesday morning, the weather service was predicting up to three inches of snow across the Cape Fear region. Amounts could be higher in some localized areas.
Temperatures had dropped to around 25 degrees and are expected to reach just above freezing Tuesday afternoon.
Th greatest chance of snow is between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday, the weather service said.
Prior to the recent flurries, the National Weather Service last recorded snowfall in Wilmington on Jan. 29, 2022 — reporting a total half inch, according to the Wilmington N.C. Snowfall Database.
Also, on Jan. 10, a system brought sleet to the area before turning into rain.
What’s the largest snowfall ever recorded in Wilmington?
The largest snowstorm to hit Wilmington since 1870 brought 15.3 inches — known as the Great Christmas Blizzard of 1989, according to the National Weather Service Wilmington N.C. Snowfall Database. Two other notable storms have hit the area: a snowstorm in February 1896, bringing 12.1 inches of snow, and a blizzard in February 1973, bringing in 12.5 inches.
Since 1870, 241 inches of snowfall has made its way to Wilmington, though the annual mean snowfall is merely 1.6 inches.
The majority of snowstorms are seen in Wilmington in January and February, with both months accounting for a combined total 66% of all events.
Even without snow and ice, cold weather by itself can still cause some safety and health issues. Here are some tips for staying safe:
Keep your gas tank at least half full.
To prevent pipes from freezing, allow your faucets to drip slightly and open cabinet doors.
Have extra blankets, sleeping bags, and/or warm winter coats ready to use.
Ensure your vehicle’s antifreeze, brakes, heater and defroster, tires, and windshield wipers are checked to ensure they are in good shape.

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson will be introduced to the media on Wednesday, but he still needs to put together his new staff in the Windy City.
Johnson, 38, will take over the Bears as his first head coaching job after three successful years running the Detroit Lions’ offense, and it seems likely he’ll want to bring some coaches with experience onto his staff.
Here’s how things are currently situated as Johnson looks to put together his coaching staff.
Offensive Coordinator:
While Johnson will undoubtedly call plays with the Bears, there are rumblings that he could end up bringing over one of his fellow coaches with the Lions to work on his staff in Chicago.
Thomas Brown, who was the Bears’ interim offensive coordinator before he was promoted to interim head coach, could potentially join the staff of the New England Patriots if he doesn’t land a job elsewhere, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
According to reports, Brown had interviewed with the Patriots for their vacant offensive coordinator position before Josh McDaniels landed the job on Tuesday.
Defensive Coordinator:
The Bears’ defensive coordinator search is still taking shape, but according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a frontrunner for the job could be former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen.
Before Allen was promoted to head coach of the Saints, his defenses ranked in the top-five in NFL in scoring, according to ESPN.
Eric Washington, who served as Matt Eberflus’ defensive coordinator in Chicago during the 2024 season, has reportedly been interviewed by the Green Bay Packers for their open defensive line coaching position, according to Jones.
Special Teams Coordinator:
Questions remain over whether the Bears will retain Richard Hightower as their special teams coordinator.
If Hightower isn’t retained by the Bears, Chicago Tribune reporter Brad Biggs has reported that he could end up heading to the Miami Dolphins to work under Mike McDaniel.
Johnson has reportedly been linked to Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi, who was New Orleans’ special teams coordinator before he was promoted after Allen’s firing in Nov. 2024.
The latest rumors on Ben Johnson’s Chicago Bears coaching staff
According to sources close to the Chicago Bears organization, a major shakeup is expected to take place within the coaching staff under new head coach Ben Johnson. Rumors have been swirling about potential changes to key positions on the coaching staff, including offensive and defensive coordinators.
One name that has been floating around as a potential addition to the Bears coaching staff is former NFL head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy, who most recently served as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, is rumored to be in talks with Johnson about potentially joining the Bears as either the offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach.
Another name that has been mentioned in connection with the Bears coaching staff is former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. Urlacher, who was a nine-time Pro Bowler and the 2005 Defensive Player of the Year, is rumored to be in consideration for a coaching position on the defensive side of the ball.
While these rumors have not been confirmed by the Chicago Bears organization, they have certainly generated a lot of buzz among fans and analysts alike. It remains to be seen how the coaching staff will ultimately shake out under Ben Johnson, but one thing is for certain – changes are on the horizon for the Chicago Bears. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation continues to develop.
The Arkansas Razorbacks (11-7, 0-5 SEC) are back home in Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday and still searching for that first SEC victory when they face the Georgia Bulldogs (14-4, 2-3 SEC). If the Razorbacks are going pick up a win, they’ll have to do it without star freshman guard Boogie Fland, who’s listed as out on the first availability report on Tuesday night.
Following Arkansas’ loss to Missouri on Saturday, head coach John Calipari revealed Fland was battling a hand injury he suffered during the loss to Florida a week prior. The freshman had his right hand tapped up and was seen playing through obvious pain at certain points of Arkansas’ 83-65 loss. In the postgame press conference, Calipari didn’t seem confident they’d have the guard in the immediate future.
“Boogie’s hand, he fell in the game at our place against Florida … His hand is pretty bad,” Calipari said after the game. “Don’t know what we’ll do going forward, but we’ve got to make sure that we get that thing right.”
On his radio show Monday night, Calipari mentioned Fland was “doubtful at best” for Wednesday night’s game. That sentiment was echoed by assistant coach Chin Coleman on Tuesday afternoon during his media availability session. Without Fland, Coleman revealed the Hogs would use a guard committee to replace the lost production before he singled out guards DJ Wagner, Johnell Davis and Billy Richmond as players who would have to step up.
“Obviously, it’s natural for DJ to move into that role,” Coleman said. “He’s done it his whole life. He’s done it in his career. So it’s an easy fix for him just moving to that role. But committee wise, Johnell will have to take some of that responsibility, and Billy Richmond, who has played that position some in high school. It’s different obviously on this level. But he has played the position so we’re going to ask for him to take some of that.”
The Razorbacks will be the first unranked SEC team Georgia has faced all season. The Bulldogs enter Fayetteville on the heels of a close, 70-68 loss to No. 1 Auburn this past Saturday. Tip-off from Bud Walton Arena is set for 8 p.m. (CST) on Wednesday night, and SEC Network will have television coverage of the game.
This year for all SEC football, basketball and baseball games, the conference requires teams to release player availability reports prior to league games. The initial report for men’s basketball is due at 7 p.m. (CST) the night before every conference game, and each player will be listed as Available, Probable, Questionable, Doubtful or Out. The Game Day Update is due two hours before tip-off and each player will be listed as Available, Game Time Decision or Out.
Latest injury update on Arkansas guard Boogie Fland:
Arkansas guard Boogie Fland suffered a sprained ankle during practice earlier this week. The team’s medical staff is currently evaluating the severity of the injury and Fland’s availability for upcoming games. Stay tuned for further updates on his recovery timeline. #ArkansasBasketball #BoogieFland #InjuryUpdate
According to Fischer, in their conversations with certain teams about Johnson, the Nets have sought as many as two first-round picks to go along with a young player. It remains to be seen whether any team will meet that price. If not, the question will be whether Brooklyn ultimately decides to make an in-season deal for a slightly more modest return or opts to hang onto Johnson into the offseason.
Here are a few more updates from Fischer on one of the NBA’s top trade candidates:
Following up on a report from The Athletic identifying the Cavaliers as a team with interest in trading for Johnson, Fischer says that interest appears “preliminary at best.” While Fischer confirms that Cleveland inquired on Johnson, he’s not sure the Cavs have the assets to appeal to Brooklyn, since they can only trade one first-round pick and it wouldn’t convey until 2031. People around the league believe the Cavs are more likely to make a minor move that reduces their luxury tax bill, Fischer notes.
Fischer is prepared to cross the Thunder off of the list of suitors for Johnson after having reported himself last month that Oklahoma City was keeping an eye on the Nets sharpshooter. While there’s still some chatter around the league about the potential fit between Johnson and OKC, there has been no “credible evidence” that the Thunder have talked to Brooklyn about a deal, Fischer explains. Like the Cavaliers, the Thunder seem reluctant to make a significant move that shakes up their roster and risks disrupting their chemistry, given their success so far this season, Fischer adds.
The Pacers and Kings are among the teams to continue to watch as possible suitors for Johnson. One Western Conference executive who spoke to Fischer believes a Sacramento package of Kevin Huerter, Trey Lyles, and a first-round pick is viewed by some people around the league as the early benchmark to beat. That doesn’t necessarily mean the Nets would accept that offer if it’s the best one they have at the deadline, but it sounds like it might be the best one they have so far.
Cameron Johnson, the sharpshooting forward for the Phoenix Suns, has been making waves in the NBA with his impressive performances. Johnson has been a key player for the Suns this season, providing valuable scoring and outside shooting.
In his latest game, Johnson scored a career-high 26 points, including six three-pointers, in a win against the Golden State Warriors. His shooting ability has been a major factor in the Suns’ success this season, as he is shooting over 40% from beyond the arc.
Johnson’s development has been a pleasant surprise for the Suns, who acquired him in a draft-day trade in 2019. He has quickly become a fan favorite in Phoenix, with his smooth shooting stroke and high basketball IQ.
As the Suns continue their quest for a playoff spot, Cameron Johnson will be a key player to watch. His ability to stretch the floor and knock down shots will be crucial for the team’s success in the postseason.
Stay tuned for more updates on Cameron Johnson and the Phoenix Suns as they make their playoff push.
