Hong Kong launches tourism blueprint set to boost economy by HK$120 billion

Hong Kong has rolled out a much-awaited tourism blueprint that highlights themes such as pandas, horse racing, mega-events and smart initiatives among updated strategies aimed at boosting the economy by HK$120 billion (US$15.5 billion) and employing 210,000 people in five years.

The document released on Monday lays out four development strategies, 16 implementation directions, 59 action plans and 133 measures to reinforce Hong Kong’s role as a hub for international and multi-destination tourism and as a city where East meets West.

Upon implementation, the tourism industry could generate HK$120 billion in economic value, the blueprint said, noting the sector accounted for 5 per cent of Hong Kong’s gross domestic product in 2018 and 2.6 per cent last year.

It said employment in the sector was expected to rise to about 210,000 in five years from 145,600 in 2023, a 44 per cent increase.

“Tourism was paralysed during the pandemic. Following the pandemic, tourists’ travel patterns have changed and we have to reform the industry,” Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said on Monday.

“The blueprint will set the scene for the industry’s development for the next five years.”

Key strategies of the blueprint include developing new tourism products and experiences, enhancing infrastructure and connectivity, and promoting Hong Kong as a premier destination for business and leisure travelers.

The government is also focusing on leveraging technology to improve the visitor experience, such as implementing smart tourism initiatives and digital platforms to provide personalized recommendations and information to visitors.

With the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacting the tourism industry, the launch of this blueprint signals a renewed effort to drive growth and recovery. By investing in new initiatives and promoting Hong Kong as an attractive destination, the city aims to not only revitalize the tourism sector but also stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities for residents.

Overall, the tourism blueprint sets ambitious goals to position Hong Kong as a leading global tourism destination and drive economic growth in the years to come.

  • Bangkok Post – Thai PM Launches Soft Power Initiative for Food Sector

Bangkok Post – Thai PM Launches Soft Power Initiative for Food Sector

Ambitious plan aims to create 75,000 jobs and generate 3.5 billion baht by 2027.

Thailand is making bold strides to establish itself as a global food hub through an ambitious initiative designed to transform its rich culinary heritage into a world-class soft power asset. This project, part of the “One Family One Soft Power” (OFOS) policy, aims to elevate Thai food’s global profile while creating over 75,000 jobs and contributing 3.5 billion baht to the economy by 2027. By combining tradition with technology, the initiative seeks to position Thailand’s vibrant food culture as a cornerstone of its international influence.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra officially launched the programme, which underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging soft power in the food sector. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Industry through the Department of Industrial Promotion (DIPROM), the project focuses on four key activities:

    1. Upgrading One Village, One Thai Chef – Enhancing culinary skills and certifying chefs to meet global standards.
    2. Developing Community Chef Restaurants and Local Thai Food – Empowering communities to strengthen their culinary potential.
    3. Upgrading Community Food Innovation Centres – Promoting the use of regional agricultural resources and advanced technology to create high-value products.
    4. Promoting Innovation in the Food and Beverage Industry – Boosting the global competitiveness of Thai food through innovation and creativity.

Minister of Industry Akanat Promphan highlighted the importance of soft power in generating significant economic value across 14 fields, including food, film, fashion, and tourism. Thai cuisine, he noted, is more than just sustenance; it embodies Thai culture, lifestyle, and creativity while reflecting a commitment to sustainability.

Aligned with the Ministry’s mission to “reform the industry into a modern, clean, convenient, and transparent economy,” the initiative’s 2024–2027 operational plan includes collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society to build a robust ecosystem for the Thai food industry. The plan not only aims to create jobs and careers but also to strengthen Thailand’s global reputation as a culinary powerhouse, ensuring opportunities for Thai people at all levels of society.

The Ministry of Industry, through the Department of Industrial Promotion (DIPROM), has developed a comprehensive guideline for advancing soft power under the Soft Power Development Strategy Plan. This strategy is built on five key pillars:

    1. Study and creatively develop resources and cultural capital.
    2. Develop personnel to drive Thai soft power initiatives.
    3. Enhance business capabilities to support sustainable growth in the soft power sector.
    4. Promote Thai soft power on a global scale.
    5. Provide supportive measures to strengthen efforts in soft power promotion.

Under this framework, DIPROM’s soft power promotion project in the food sector includes four primary activities:

    1. Upgrading One Village, One Thai Chef: This initiative focuses on imparting culinary knowledge, improving food quality, and securing certifications from professional qualification institutes to develop participants into professional chefs.
    2. Developing Community Chef Restaurants and Local Thai Food: Target communities are selected for training and support, empowering them to enhance their culinary potential in alignment with the One Family One Soft Power vision.
    3. Upgrading Community Food Innovation Centres: These centres provide knowledge on food standards, encourage the adoption of advanced technology and innovation, and utilise regional agricultural raw materials to create high-value products.
    4. Promoting Innovation in the Food and Beverage Industry: By focusing on innovation, technology, standards, and creativity, this activity aims to boost the global competitiveness of Thai food businesses sustainably.

This multi-faceted approach underscores the Ministry’s commitment to transforming Thailand’s food industry into a global soft power asset.

Minister of Industry Akanat Promphan highlighted that the project not only aims to elevate Thai cuisine to international acclaim but also serves as a New Year’s gift for the Thai people. The initiative seeks to create jobs, enhance livelihoods across all sectors—from farmers to large enterprises—and position Thailand as a global food hub by attracting foreign investment and increasing exports of Thai food products.

The event featured interactive zones showcasing Thailand’s culinary innovation:

    • Zone 8 Food Station: Offered 16 exclusive menus crafted by renowned celebrity chefs, showcasing culinary excellence and innovation.
    • Food Genius Center Zone: Displayed innovative food products and processed ingredients from local communities, highlighting their potential.
    • Local Chef Restaurant Zone: Presented four signature dishes representing Thailand’s four regions, offering an authentic culinary experience.
    • Innovation Zone for Thai Food and Beverages: Featured creative beverages developed by professionals, reflecting Thai creativity and offering a variety of unique flavours.

The project also marks a collaborative effort between DIPROM and seven key agencies, including the Ministry of Higher Education, the Department of Health, and the Digital Government Development Agency. This partnership aims to improve food quality standards, drive research and development, and promote Thai food exports, ensuring that Thai cuisine becomes a globally recognised and respected force.

With this initiative, Thailand is poised to solidify its position as a global leader in the culinary world, blending tradition and innovation to create a lasting impact on the international stage.

In a bid to boost Thailand’s global presence in the food industry, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has launched a soft power initiative aimed at promoting Thai cuisine and food products on the world stage.

The initiative, titled “Flavors of Thailand,” will focus on showcasing the unique flavors and culinary traditions of Thailand to international audiences. It will also aim to position Thailand as a hub for food innovation and sustainability.

With the global food industry becoming increasingly competitive, the Thai government sees the promotion of its food sector as a key strategy for enhancing the country’s soft power and economic growth. By highlighting the diversity and quality of Thai food products, the initiative aims to increase demand for Thai food and create new opportunities for Thai food producers and exporters.

Through a series of promotional activities, including food festivals, culinary competitions, and international trade shows, the government hopes to raise awareness of Thai cuisine and encourage consumers around the world to choose Thai products.

As Thailand continues to navigate the challenges of the post-pandemic world, the “Flavors of Thailand” initiative represents a bold step towards establishing Thailand as a global leader in the food industry. With its rich culinary heritage and commitment to sustainability, Thailand is well-positioned to capture the hearts and taste buds of food lovers worldwide.

  • Marianne Williamson launches bid for DNC chair

Marianne Williamson launches bid for DNC chair

Marianne Williamson, an author and former Democratic presidential candidate, announced Thursday that she is launching a campaign to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee.

“I am announcing I’m running for DNC chair,” Williamson said in a video announcing her candidacy, “because I feel that I can bring a level of expertise to the process of lifting up this possibility of victory over the next two and four years in a way that will not occur if we are only looking traditional means of politicking in order to make that happen.”

Williamson added that she’s been talking to Democratic voters about what they’d like to see from their party.

“I’ve traveled extensively throughout this country, and I’ve seen how much pain there is out there,” she said. “I’ve been up close and personal with people who didn’t have health care, who couldn’t survive on just one job, who were so depressed about so many of the conditions in their lives that were, in fact, at least indirectly due to bad public policy, and too many of them didn’t feel like the Democratic Party had their back.”

Williamson is the latest candidate, and the first woman, to jump into the race to succeed outgoing DNC Chair Jaime Harrison.

She joins a wide field of candidates who previously announced their bids for chair, including former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, Minnesota Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler, New York state Sen. James Skoufis and former Maryland Senate candidate Robert Houton.

So far, most of the candidates say that they would seek to begin a new term as DNC chair by learning what went wrong for their party in 2024 and conducting what is often called a postmortem” analysis of the election.

Williamson agreed with that strategy in her video, saying, “We need to know what it was that made people feel that their wallets were more important than their pain. We need to understand what it is that has made people emotionally and psychologically disconnect from a sense that the Democratic Party was part of a great legacy in American history.”

There have been no public forums yet where the candidates have met and taken questions from members of their party, but those meetings are slated to start in the new year. The official election for the next DNC chair will be held on Feb. 1.

In her video, Williamson added that her goal as chair of the DNC would include connecting the problems in voters’ lives to public policy solutions.

“I want to help people connect with the political issues that are going on in their lives in a very real and personal way. And I want to help people understand that by connecting to the Democratic Party, they can truly make a difference,” she said.

Marianne Williamson, best-selling author and spiritual leader, has announced her bid for the chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Williamson, known for her messages of love and unity, believes that her unique perspective can help bring the party together and lead it to victory in future elections.

In a statement released on her website, Williamson said, “I believe that the Democratic Party needs a leader who can inspire and unite the American people. We need to move beyond the divisive politics of the past and focus on creating a better future for all. As DNC chair, I will work tirelessly to ensure that our party stands for love, compassion, and justice.”

Williamson’s bid for DNC chair has already generated excitement among progressives and spiritual seekers alike. Many believe that her message of love and unity is exactly what the party needs to heal and move forward.

As the race for DNC chair heats up, it will be interesting to see how Williamson’s message resonates with party members and voters. Stay tuned for updates on her campaign and the future of the Democratic Party.

Marianne Williamson launches bid for Democratic National Committee chair

Washington — Marianne Williamson, a self-help author who twice ran for president, announced Thursday that she is running for chair of the Democratic National Committee.

In an open letter to DNC members posted online, Williamson laid out her plan for the party as it seeks to move forward after losing the White House and Senate in November. She urged Democrats to sign a petition to allow her to participate in candidate forums that will be held in January.

DNC members will elect the party’s new chair and other officers at its winter meeting Feb. 1. There will also be a series of four forums to allow those running for DNC chair to speak with party members and lay out their vision for the Democratic Party.

“As chairwoman, I will work to reinvent the party from the inside out,” Williamson wrote in her pitch to DNC members. “For if we want a new president in four years, and a new Congress in two, then we must immediately get about the task of creating a new party.”

She said under her plan, the Democratic Party will be one that “listens more, and makes people feel that their thoughts and feelings are as important as their wallets” and “advocates unequivocally for the working people of the United States.” Williamson said the party will have “the humility to recognize we need to look in the mirror, and be willing to reinvent ourselves.”

“We won’t just fight; we will inspire. We will create a surge of patriotic fervor, and a connectedness of the American heart to the great historical legacy of this country,” she wrote. “Our ultimate success will be creating in people’s minds a sense that in order to further that legacy, your smartest move is to vote for Democrats.”

Williamson joins a field of candidates that includes Martin O’Malley, former governor of Maryland; Ken Martin, leader of the Minnesota arm of the Democratic Party; and Ben Wikler, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. Jaime Harrison, the current DNC chair, is not seeking reelection.

Williamson, 72, sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 and 2024. She was the first Democrat to launch her presidential bid during the most recent election, becoming the first primary challenger to President Biden.

A spiritual adviser and author, Williamson suspended her presidential campaign in early February, but rejoined the race several weeks later. After the primaries ended in June, she posted on social media that she was “no longer a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president.” Mr. Biden dropped out of the race in July, with the Democratic Party ultimately nominating Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a surprise announcement today, spiritual author and activist Marianne Williamson has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the position of Democratic National Committee chair. Known for her inspirational speeches and advocacy for social justice issues, Williamson is seeking to bring a new vision and energy to the Democratic Party.

In a statement released on her website, Williamson said, “I believe that the Democratic Party is in need of a major shake-up. We need leaders who are willing to think outside the box and challenge the status quo. As DNC chair, I will work tirelessly to unite our party, inspire grassroots activism, and push for progressive policies that truly benefit all Americans.”

Williamson’s candidacy is sure to shake up the race for DNC chair, which has so far been dominated by more establishment figures. With her unique blend of spirituality and progressive politics, Williamson could energize a new generation of Democrats and bring fresh ideas to the party.

Stay tuned for updates on Marianne Williamson’s campaign for DNC chair and her vision for the future of the Democratic Party. #WilliamsonforDNCChair
