Stripe Accidentally Sends Duck Image to Staff in Layoff Email
- Stripe accidentally sent an image of a cartoon duck to some staff in a layoff email, BI has learned.

The payments-software company Stripe accidentally emailed an image of a cartoon duck to some employees when notifying them that they had been laid off, Business Insider has learned.
The company laid off 300 employees on Monday, equivalent to about 3.5% of its workforce. Those roles were primarily in product, engineering, and operations, according to a leaked memo obtained by BI.
The image, which was attached as a PDF, showed a yellow duck with brown feathers on its wing and accompanying text that said, “US-Non-California Duck.”
The company also sent impacted staff an incorrect termination date in an email.

A Stripe spokesperson confirmed the duck image and incorrect dates were sent in error and pointed BI to a follow-up email from Rob McIntosh, the company’s chief people officer.
“I also want to note that some impacted Stripes received a notification error to their personal email accounts Monday evening PT,” McIntosh wrote.
“I apologize for the error and any confusion it caused,” he added. “Corrected and full notifications have since been sent to all impacted Stripes.”
In a separate email to staff confirming the layoffs, McIntosh said Stripe still planned on growing its head count to about 10,000 employees by the end of the year.
In an internal Stripe group on the Blind app for professional communities seen by BI, one employee asked whether others had received the duck image.
One person responded that they had and that it was another “indication the comms to those laid off were flubbed completely.”
Another employee, seemingly joking, wrote, “Wonder if there’s a california duck.” A different employee wrote, “Quick, make a slack emoji out of the duck.”
Stripe, which provides payment software to millions of businesses, has had other rounds of layoffs in recent years.

Veteran D John Klingberg signing with Oilers after long layoff due to injury
Veteran defenceman John Klingberg is returning to the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports.
Klingberg was a free agent and has not played an NHL game since Nov. 11, 2023.
Dreger reported on Tuesday’s edition of Insider Trading that several teams had interest in Klingberg, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.
Klingberg spent last season with the Maple Leafs after inking a one-year, $4.15 million deal as a free agent earlier that summer. He had five assists and was a minus-7 in 14 games with the team before undergoing season-ending surgery on his hip.
Drafted 131st overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2010 draft, Klingberg has 81 goals and 412 points in 633 career games split between the Stars, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and Maple Leafs.
The Gothenburg, Sweden, native represented his country four times at the World Championship and helped his country win back-to-back gold medals in 2017 and 2018.

Nets’ Cam Thomas ‘felt great’ coming off injury layoff
If there was one positive takeaway from the Nets’ disappointing loss to the Magic on Sunday afternoon, it was the return and sustained health of top scorer Cam Thomas.
Thomas, who had been out since Nov. 25 with a hamstring strain, “felt great” in his first game back in which he scored a game-high 25 points to go with six assists and six rebounds in the 102-101 loss.
The fourth-year guard did note some soreness, which wasn’t unexpected after the 25-minute effort.

Obviously a little sore, you know playing, come back and playing high intensity like that,” Thomas said following the game. “So I am a little sore right now, but at the end of day, I feel good. Felt great, playing out there. Just got to do the other things for game rhythm, conditioning and fatigue. Just getting all that back to where I was, but until I get back to that, I’ll feel good. Be ready. Be CT again.”
“His first half was great; 14 points, five assists … it was on pace for an amazing game,” head coach Jordi Fernandez said. “I really liked his aggressiveness. It looked like he was just back, and shots were going and was looking great. And I’m happy that he’s back on the court.”
Thomas said it will take him a few games to get back to his vintage self after he shot 33 percent from the field on Sunday (6-for-18), which is a dip from his 45 percent shooting average of the season.
The high-scoring guard also missed the final shot of the game — a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer — but Thomas believes it was a shot he would make if he had a few games back under his belt since the injury.
“Got a great look. You know, a shot that I’m pretty sure everybody believes that I can make,” Thomas said. “You know, still my first game back. Trying to get my legs up under me. So pretty sure if I shot that shot a few games down the road, it would go in.
“Some of the shots I was missing today, I don’t normally miss those. I think some of that is just, you know, obviously fatigue and legs, and just getting back to playing these kind of minutes with the defense, you know, keying in on it, almost, I just got to get back in the flow, in the flow of things.”
Across the 13 games Thomas missed due to injury, the Nets went 4-9.
Cam Johnson (left hip soreness) left the game against the Magic during the fourth quarter and did not return.
Following the loss, Fernandez did not have an update on the sixth-year forward.
Johnson finished with nine points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals across 25 minutes.
