  • Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman Ruled Out of 4 Nations Face-Off

It’s been a difficult year of injury for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jani Hakanpaa. The veteran blue liner has been held to just two regular season contests in his first season in Toronto as he battles through various injuries and ailments.

The 32-year-old’s season has received another blow as it’s been shared that he’s been ruled out for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.

There was minimal hope that the Maple Leafs’ defenseman would be ready to go, but Hakanpaa and his native country of Finland were clinging on to it. With the pool of active NHL defensemen from Finland being drastically thin, the Finns were desperate not to replace him. Unfortunately, Hakanpaa’s not cleared to play and will miss the tournament. NHL insider Chris Johnston shared the disappointing update via his X account.

“Jani Hakanpää has been ruled out of the 4 Nations Face-Off because of his ongoing injury issues,” he wrote. “Finland now needs two replacements on “D” with Miro Heiskanen already out.”

As Johnston indicates, Finland must now find two more defensemen to fill out their tournament roster. Henri Jokiharju of the Buffalo Sabres is a logical next choice, but the final defenseman to make the squad is likely down to Urho Vakaanainen of the New York Rangers or Ville Heinola of the Winnipeg Jets.

Hakanpaa was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues. He wouldn’t make his NHL debut until nearly a decade later, however, when he played in five games with the Anaheim Ducks in 2019-2020.

Where he’s grown his reputation as a stay-at-home defender was with the Dallas Stars over the past few seasons. He skated in 80, 82, and 64 games in each of this three seasons with the Stars, and developed a physical and gritty style of defense that goaltenders and coaches love to have. Now Finland will need to replace him and hope their blue line can hold up at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.

Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman, Jake Muzzin, has been ruled out of the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament due to an undisclosed injury. The news comes as a blow to both the Maple Leafs and Team Canada, as Muzzin was expected to be a key player in the tournament.

Muzzin has been a consistent performer for the Maple Leafs this season, providing solid defensive play and contributing offensively as well. His absence will surely be felt on the ice, but the team is confident that they have the depth to fill the void left by Muzzin’s absence.

We wish Jake Muzzin a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the ice soon. In the meantime, the Maple Leafs will have to regroup and adjust their game plan as they prepare for the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa ruled out of 4 Nations with injury

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa will not participate in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off for Finland due to injury.

Hakanpaa has skated in just two games for the Maple Leafs this season due to knee issues and has not played since mid-November.

The 32-year-old averaged 14:05 minutes of ice time and had two shots on goal, four blocked shots and one hit during those two contests.

In early December, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said that Hakanpaa had a “little procedure” done on his knee. Hakanpaa had undergone season-ending knee surgery last March as a member of the Dallas Stars

More woes on blueline for Finland

Finland will need to add two replacements to its roster with Stars defenceman Miro Heiskanen, who was injured on Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights, also ruled out as he is week to week with a lower-body injury.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun wrote in The Athletic on Friday that while Heiskanen is off to see a specialist in New York on Monday for his lower-body injury, Stars general manager Jim Nill told LeBrun the team feels there’s a good chance the defenceman returns before the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“We’re pretty optimistic,” Nill said Friday. “He had an MRI done, he saw our team doctor, he’s going to go see a specialist in New York on Monday. And we’ll get a better feel for things.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenceman Jani Hakanpaa has been ruled out of the upcoming 4 Nations tournament due to injury. Hakanpaa, who was set to represent Finland in the international competition, suffered the injury during a recent game with the Maple Leafs. The team has not disclosed the specific nature of Hakanpaa’s injury or the expected timeline for his return to play. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon.

  • Leafs, Golden Knights, Devils, Lightning among teams to watch to sign Brandon Saad

Daily Faceoff President and insider Frank Seravalli shined some details this evening on where Brandon Saad might end up.

The veteran forward has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning according to Seravalli.

The St. Louis Blues and Saad mutually agreed to terminate his contract. The agreement will see Saad sacrifice his remaining salary for this season as well as the $4.5 million owed next season, the final year of his five-year pact.

The 32-year-old has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 43 games this season.

Last season, Saad racked up 26 goals, the most since the 2015-16 season when he played for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Saad finished the season with 42 points in 82 games.

Saad signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Blues as a free agent on July 29, 2021. During his first season with the Blues, Saad tallied 24 goals and 25 assists for 49 points in 78 games, adding five points in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion was recently named to the Chicago Blackhawks Quarter-Century team. The Pittsburgh native spent seven years in Chicago and was a pivotal part of their Stanley Cup runs in 2012-13 and 2014-15. During his time in the Windy City, Saad notched 114 goals and 127 assists for 241 points in 428 regular season contests. Over the course of 906 career games, Saad has tallied 260 goals and 515 points with Chicago, Columbus, Colorado and St. Louis.

Brandon Saad is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and several teams are expected to be interested in signing the talented forward. Among the teams to watch are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Maple Leafs are in need of additional scoring depth to complement their star players, and Saad could provide just that. With his combination of skill and physicality, he would be a valuable asset for Toronto.

The Golden Knights have shown a willingness to make big moves in the past, and adding Saad to their already strong lineup could make them even more formidable. His playoff experience and ability to perform in clutch situations could be a perfect fit for Vegas.

The Devils are a young team on the rise, and adding a proven winner like Saad could help accelerate their rebuild. His leadership and experience could be invaluable in helping New Jersey take the next step in their development.

The Lightning are always a threat in the playoffs, and adding a player like Saad to their roster would only make them stronger. His two-way play and ability to contribute on both ends of the ice would be a great fit in Tampa Bay.

Overall, Brandon Saad is sure to attract plenty of interest from teams looking to improve their roster this offseason. Keep an eye on the Leafs, Golden Knights, Devils, and Lightning as potential landing spots for the talented forward.

  • Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Auston Matthews has had a ton of success against Columbus in his career, and our NHL picks expect that to continue tonight.

We’ve got eight games on the NHL betting slate today, including an Eastern Conference clash between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.

Auston Matthews has made a living out of torching the Blue Jackets throughout his career with 22 points in 16 games, including a handful of multi-point efforts along the way, thus making his point total the focus of my Maple Leafs vs. Blue Jackets predictions.

Find out why in my NHL picks for this January 22 Leafs vs. Blue Jackets matchup.

Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets prediction

    My Leafs pick
Auston Matthews Over 1.5 points (+130 at Sports Interaction)

    My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to win their fourth in a row when they welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to town.

The Jackets had been rolling recently, going on a six-game winning streak before sputtering out in their last couple of games here, losing 1-0 and 3-1, both losses coming on the road. Columbus has been Jekyll and Hyde this year, depending on where they’re played.

The Jackets have been excellent inside Nationwide Arena, sporting a 16-5-3 record. However, things drop off massively when they hit the highway. The team has the worst record in the conference with a lowly .348 points percentage and a -28 goal differential, allowing the third-most goals per game in the NHL (3.62).

The Leafs are a strong home team and should be able to take full advantage of a Columbus group that doesn’t travel well. Toronto has also averaged 4.00 goals against CBJ over the last five meetings.

One player who seems to always litter the scoresheet in these matchups is none other than the three-time Rocket winner Auston Matthews. The Leafs sniper has 11 goals and 20 points in the last 10 meetings against Columbus, seven of those games being multi-point efforts.

This is why his Over 1.5 points is super appealing to me, especially with the Leafs captain finally looking healthy again amid his strongest stretch of games this year. He’s scored in four straight games and has gone Over the 1.5-point total in two of those four. Given how hot he is and his past success against the Blue Jackets, I think he’s bound to do it again.

Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets same-game parlay (SGP)

    Auston Matthews anytime goalscorer

    Auston Matthews 3+ shots

    Zach Werenski 3+ shots

We’ll mirror the best bet with a goal from Auston Matthews. The Leafs captain has 13 goals in 16 career games against Columbus and has cashed in this prop in nine of the last 10 meetings between the two clubs. He also finally looks healthy and confident again, which has allowed him to score in four straight outings. He should be able to make it five in a row in this spot.

Next up, we’ll stick with the Matthews prop market and take him to register 3+ shots on goal. This is another prop he’s cashed in nine of the last 10 meetings against the Blue Jackets. He’s also averaging 3.87 shots per game and has gone Over the total in two of his last three outings.

Let’s continue to pound the shot prop market and take Blue Jackets star defenseman Zach Werenski to go Over 2.5 shots tonight. He leads Columbus with 180 shots on goal, averaging 3.82 per game, and Toronto gives up the ninth-most shots on goal per contest (29.2).

  • Maple Leafs 7-3 Canadiens (Jan 18, 2025) Game Recap

MONTREAL — — The Toronto Maple Leafs scored seven unanswered goals to overcome a three-goal first-period deficit for a 7-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

Bobby McMann, Nicholas Robertson, William Nylander, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Steven Lorentz, Auston Matthews and David Kampf found the back of the net for Toronto. Joseph Woll made 32 saves.

Kirby Dach, Patrik Laine, and Josh Anderson scored forst-period goals for Montreal. Sam Montembeault finished with 27 saves.

Montreal struck first on Dach’s goal at 5:08. Patrik Laine, on the power play, and Josh Anderson scored just nine seconds apart, giving Montreal a 3-0 lead.

Toronto pulled within 3-2 after two periods on goals from McMann and Robertson. Nylander scored 24 seconds into the third period on a breakaway to make it 3-all.

    Ekman-Larsson scored a power-play goal at 4:31, Matthews scored a short-handed goal at 7:58, Lorentz scored at 14:45, and Kampf added a short-handed empty-netter at 18:26.

    Takeaways

Canadiens: Missed opportunities again made Montreal’s life more difficult than it needed to be. Shots ringing off the post, missing open chances, and excellent saves from Woll prevented them from putting the game away in the second period.

Maple Leafs: Despite an abysmal first period, Toronto regrouped and completed their comeback in the blink of an eye, scoring five before Montreal had the chance to regroup.

    Key moment

Halfway through the second period, Montreal’s Christian Dvorak sent a shot that rang off the right post and promptly turned into a two-on-one rush that ended with McMann scoring eight seconds later.

    Up next

Maple Leafs: Host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night.

The game started off with the Maple Leafs taking an early lead, with goals from Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner putting them up 2-0 in the first period. The Canadiens fought back with a goal from Brendan Gallagher, but the Leafs quickly responded with another goal from Matthews to extend their lead.

In the second period, the Maple Leafs continued to pile on the goals, with John Tavares, William Nylander, and Rasmus Sandin all finding the back of the net. The Canadiens managed to score two goals of their own, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Leafs.

In the third period, Matthews completed his hat trick with another goal, solidifying the Maple Leafs’ victory. Despite a late goal from the Canadiens, the Leafs held on for a convincing 7-3 win.

Overall, it was a strong performance from the Maple Leafs, with their offense firing on all cylinders and their defense holding strong against the Canadiens. The win moves the Maple Leafs closer to the top of the standings, while the Canadiens will look to bounce back in their next game.

  • Devils Lose to Leafs in OT in Keefe’s Return | GAME STORY

Here are some observations from the game:

    • Devils captain Nico Hischier did it all for his team, as he always does. He scored team-leading goals 21 and 22 of the season, both on the power play. The first with a sick snipe from the near circle and the second in the third period while battling in the crease. He also drew the penalty on Oliver Ekman-Larsson that led to his first power-play goal. Start and finish.

Meanwhile, he also negated a Maple Leafs power play while working on the penalty kill. He stole a D-to-D pass on the blue line and went in for a breakaway, drawing a penalty that ended the Leafs power play and made it a 4-on-4 game. Not to mention, he went head-to-head all night with the dangerous Auston Matthews, keeping him in check at 5-on-5.

    • Jack Hughes opened the scoring with his 18th goal of the season. He collected the puck right above the crease, all alone with his back to the goalie. Hughes gained possession, quickly pivoted his body to face the goal while pushing the puck toward the middle of the crease. That pushed goaltender Joseph Woll to his right to stay squared on the puck. Hughes then pulled the puck back into his body and on the backhand. Woll, having moved to his right, reached back with his pad and glove to the left to try and stop Hughes’ shot. Hughes perfectly squeezed the puck over the pad and under the glove and into the net for one of the nicest goals you’ll see all year.

    • Hughes had a three-point night for the Devils with a goal and two assists.

    • Hughes scored with a brilliant move on goal, but the play was set up by a great effort from defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic. The puck was ripped up the boards in the Maple Leafs zone. Kovacevic was standing at the point along with Steven Lorentz. When the puck arrived, Lorentz tried to deflect it out of the zone. But Kovacevic managed to knock the puck down and threw it toward the net, where Hughes was waiting to pounce.

The assist was Kovacevic’s 12th of the year, setting a new career high.

    • If you want to know the type of player that defenseman Brett Pesce is, look at the play he made with two minutes remaining in the second period. An errant pass sailed to Toronto’s Pontus Holmberg all alone in the high slot. But as Holmberg was trying to pull the puck to his forehand, Pesce dove and managed to go stick-on-puck to knock the puck away from Holmberg and out of danger.

    • The Devils are 21-0-1 when leading after two periods. Their lone loss was against Toronto back in December.

The New Jersey Devils faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a thrilling matchup on Wednesday night. The game marked the return of former Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe, who is now the head coach of the Devils.

The Devils came out strong, taking an early lead in the first period with a goal from Jack Hughes. However, the Leafs quickly responded with goals from Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner to tie the game.

The game remained tied through the second period and into overtime. In the extra period, it was Matthews who played hero for the Leafs, scoring the game-winning goal to secure a 3-2 victory over the Devils.

Despite the loss, the Devils put up a strong fight against the high-powered Leafs offense. Keefe’s return to Toronto was bittersweet, but he was proud of his team’s effort and resilience.

The Devils will look to bounce back in their next game as they continue their push for a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Leafs will build on this win as they aim to solidify their position at the top of the standings.
