    Mets could go cheap at first base and sign $119 million star if Pete Alonso leaves


    The New York Mets added Juan Soto this offseason and are trying to land Pete Alonso as well. However, if Alonso leaves, the Mets could pivot to a cheaper option in free agency to replace him.

    Newsweek’s Drew VonScio suggested that the team could turn to veteran Josh Bell to fill their need at first base should Alonso leave. Spotrac projects Bell to sign a one-year, $5.2 million deal. A cheaper option like Bell would add a solid bat while allowing them to spend on a third baseman like Alex Bregman.

    “Signing Bell would give the Mets a chance to add a solid bat while also consuming a lot less of the budget. Therefore, they could sign other big-time players — Alex Bregman perhaps– to help make the lineup much more well-rounded,” wrote VonScio. “If they could get Bell back to his 2021 production with the Washington Nationals, Bell could turn into a steal on the first base market.”

    The Mets do not have to sign anyone really to play first base if they lose Alonso. They could move Mark Vientos to first base. However, signing Bell would allow them to trade Starling Marte and his contract as Bell could serve as the DH as well.

    Adding Bregman would help replace Alonso’s production. Spotrac projects Bregman to sign a four-year, $119 million deal. He hit 26 home runs last season with a .260/.315/.453 slash line.

    Additionally, Bell is no slouch at the plate. He is an All-Star and Silver Slugger. He hit 19 home runs and had 71 RBIs last season. He has bounced around the league but has 171 career home runs. Losing Alonso would be a big blow. However, adding Bregman and Bell could give the Mets two solid bats to help replace him.

    The New York Mets could be facing a major decision at first base this offseason if reigning Home Run Derby champion Pete Alonso decides to leave in free agency.     Could De’Aaron Fox team up again with Bam Adebayo? “Tea leaves are reading that (he) is going to ask out.”


    The Sacramento Kings have fired head coach Mike Brown, doing so immediately following the franchise’s first two winning seasons in two decades, one of which earning him unanimous Coach of the Year honors for the first time in NBA history. After a 13-18 start sitting on a five-game losing streak in his third year with the team, he was canned.

    To say it was a controversial decision would be an understatement. Denver head coach Michael Malone said the franchise had “no class, no balls” by firing Brown. Indiana’s Rick Carlisle added that Brown is “one of the standard bearers for integrity for our profession” and he is “just absolutely shocked” Sacramento made the move. Golden State’s Steve Kerr shared similar “really shocking” verbiage before thanking the Warriors for being a franchise that “really values continuity and that allows our team and our staff and our group to get through the rough patches.”

    Point being, the Kings found their greatest run of success in the modern era under Brown, and that has overlapped with the greatest run of success De’Aaron Fox has found in his NBA career. He’s averaged 25.8 points per game in three years while never shooting below 46.5 percent from the field or 32.4 percent from three — plus at least 5.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game in all three seasons.

    With Sacramento an absolute train wreck — and seemingly forever a train wreck — will Fox make the correct long-term career move and get the hell out? One NBA insider seems to think so.

    ESPN’s Tim MacMahon says the tea leaves are ‘pretty clearly’ trending toward a trade request from Fox. And if he does ask out, one move could have him teaming back up with Bam Adebayo in Miami.

    “Look, if it sets up — the tea leaves are reading that Fox is going to ask out. Like, come on. It’s pretty clearly reading that way,” he said. “… If he does ask out, certainly San Antonio and Houston — keep an eye on those two. I’ve heard Lakers, but it’s hard to tell how much of that is just people jumping to conclusions because he’s a Klutch client. I’ve heard Miami with the Bam connection there. Who knows what other suitors might or which of these teams will actually be suitors if it comes to that.”

    A pairing with Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio would be a blast and we could see him alongside Reed Sheppard in Houston — assuming the former Wildcat wouldn’t be used as trade bait to get Fox there — but I’m sure everyone would want to see the 2016-17 Kentucky teammates back together again with the Heat. Maybe Sacramento can include Malik Monk, who is also having a career year in purple and black?

    Whatever it takes to get our guys away from that dumpster fire.

    Now, the Patriots have seen star cornerback Christian Gonzalez leave the game due to a head injury.

    Gonzalez is the clear-cut best player on the defensive side of the football for New England. Losing him would be a devastating blow for the Patriots.

    Hopefully, just like with Maye, he is able to get back in the game this afternoon.

    Defending against Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ offense is no easy task. Having to defend against them without Gonzalez would make things much more difficult for New England.

    At just 22 years old, the sky is the limit for Gonzalez. He has legitimate superstar potential for the future.

    Honestly, the Patriots would be much better off losing their last two games. For the future of the franchise, being able to land the No. 2 or No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft would be a huge step in the right direction.
