    LeBron James says the wildfires that have killed at least 25 people and destroyed thousands of homes have taken a toll on his mental health.

    His Los Angeles Lakers had lost three games in a row before their home victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night, and James acknowledged the fires had affected him personally. “I have a couple of dear friends that have lost their homes in the Palisades,” James said. “Obviously, my heart goes out to all of the families, all across not only the Palisades, but all across LA county and all the surrounding areas because of the fire. … It’s been a lot of emotions. Kind of been off. Personally, I’ve been off.

    “I’ve just been completely off for obvious reasons, but hopefully things are contained or continue to be contained. And hopefully, at some point, we can start to push forward and move forward and put it behind us and rebuild our city, rebuild this beautiful city.”

    The fires have disrupted the Lakers’ schedule, with the team forced into a six-day layoff before resuming play on Monday, while the team’s coach, JJ Redick, lost his home to the fires. James said he hopes the team can offer some comfort for the city.

    “I hope that by us going out on the floor and us playing the way we played tonight … and hopefully the next few months or whatever it is, years, until the city is back up, that we as a Lakers franchise and the players that are playing for the Lakers give a sense of hope and pride and excitement,” James said. “Sports has always given people an opportunity to temporarily forget about whatever they may have been going through.   • LeBron James, forced to evacuate home, opens up about impact of Los Angeles wildfires


    LeBron James and his family are among the more than 150,000 Los Angeles area residents forced to evacuate their homes at points in the past week as wildfires ravaged the area, leaving at least 25 people dead and destroying more than 12,300 structures.

    For the first time, LeBron James opened up about having to evacuate their Brentwood home and the impact of the fires, speaking to reporters after his Lakers beat the Heat Wednesday night (quotes via Jovan Buha of The Athletic).

    “There’s been a lot of emotions,” James said. “I have a couple of dear friends that have lost their homes in the Palisades. Obviously, my heart goes out to all of the families, all across not only the (Pacific) Palisades, but all across L.A. County and all the surrounding areas because of the fire and things of that nature. It’s been a lot of emotions.

    “Personally, I’ve been off,” he continued. “Personally, my family, we’ve been evacuated since Thursday night, so I’ve been in a hotel since pretty much when we got back from Dallas. So, just figuring it out. But staying strong for one another. Obviously, that’s most important.”

    LeBron had to evacuate his home due to fires once before, back in 2019.

    “We had that experience and was able to lean on that a little bit,” James said. “The difference between ’19 and today, the one in ’19 was in the middle of the night so we had to get going right away. We had a little bit more time before we had to evacuate, so we were able to get some things, get some belongings or whatever the case may be, get some things that meant things to us. But our home has definitely not been touched since the moment we left, but it’s still standing and we’re grateful for that.”

    The fires have impacted several Lakers. Coach J.J. Redick had the home he, his wife and two sons rented in Pacific Palisades burn down. Fortunately, the family was safe, but he had previously talked about an emotional toll. Among the memories lost were his sons’ growing NBA memorabilia collections, but Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama helped them restart that collection.

    Firefighters are still working to fully contain the wildfires in the region, particularly the sprawling Palisades fire (which is the one that threatened LeBron’s home and burned Redick’s). Fortunately for those efforts, the strong winds that had fanned the flames have died down.

    LOS ANGELES — Speaking for the first time since the Southern California wildfires forced him and his family to evacuate their home last week, LeBron James acknowledged Wednesday that the fires — which have burned through 60 square miles and killed at least 25 people — have taken a mental toll.

    “I have a couple of dear friends that have lost their homes in the Palisades,” James said after the Los Angeles Lakers‘ 117-108 win over the Miami Heat. “Obviously, my heart goes out to all of the families, all across not only the Palisades, but all across L.A. County and all the surrounding areas because of the fire. … It’s been a lot of emotions. Kind of been off. Personally, I’ve been off.

    “I’ve just been completely off for obvious reasons, but hopefully things are contained or continue to be contained. And hopefully, at some point, we can start to push forward and move forward and put it behind us and rebuild our city, rebuild this beautiful city.”

    His team has also not looked like the group that was seemingly building momentum just a couple of weeks ago, winning eight out of 11 games and fortifying its roster by trading for a coveted 3-and-D wing in Dorian Finney-Smith.

    L.A. had lost three games in a row and was trailing the Heat by 12 at halftime when James checked his phone in the locker room during the break.

    A family friend sent him a clip of a young girl sitting courtside in a replica James No. 23 jersey who was overcome with emotion when the Lakers star acknowledged her in the first quarter.

    “Thank goodness that I actually looked at my phone at halftime, or I wouldn’t have even seen the reaction when I waved to her in the first half,” James said after the game. “I waved to her, and then I got back to play. So, to have that type of connection with someone, where they can have that type of reaction, I think that’s what it’s all about. And I’ve always tried to be a role model and someone that kids can look up to. … Try to make them proud and want to come see me play or if they’re not able to see me play, hopefully some of the things that I do off the floor continue to inspire them.”

    Perhaps it was the connection James needed to switch back on.

    He scored 15 of his 22 points after halftime — including seven straight in the fourth quarter to stretch L.A.’s lead from two with 3:51 remaining to nine with 1:52 to go — and the Lakers held on to beat Miami.

    “His comfort level closing the basketball game is obviously very high,” said Lakers coach JJ Redick — one of James’ friends who lost their homes in the Pacific Palisades.

    On Monday, the first game the Lakers played following a six-day layoff because of the fires, L.A. lost 126-102 and was outscored by 33 points in the second half by the San Antonio Spurs. At shootaround in preparation for the Heat game, Redick said, he challenged his entire team to provide better leadership in their own way. L.A. responded with a team effort, with James one of six players to score 14 points or more in the win.

    James said the Lakers’ performance against Miami, and more games like it in the future, is something he wants Los Angeles to be able to draw some positivity from.

    “I hope that by us going out on the floor and us playing the way we played tonight — not the way we played against San Antonio — but the way we played tonight and hopefully the next few months or whatever it is, years, until the city is back up, that we as a Lakers franchise and the players that are playing for the Lakers give a sense of hope and pride and excitement,” James said. “Sports has always given people an opportunity to kind of just like temporarily forget about whatever they may have been going through.     After the final buzzer, James beelined over to the girl sitting courtside before she and her family exited the arena. He took off one of his I Promise wristbands and placed it on the girl’s wrist and crouched down on one knee so his 6-foot-9 body would fit in the frame next to her while they posed for a photograph.

    “I think it will be something that hopefully she will never forget,” James said. “I’m happy to be a part of her life now and that small little moment, but such a bigger moment. And hopefully she brags about it in school.”

    It was a night to remember for Sierra Canyon’s Bryce James. He has missed a handful of high school basketball games over the course of his career mainly due to being ineligible, with the son of Lakers star Lebron James having bounced around a few times throughout his time as a prep player. But on Thursday night, none of that mattered as James suited up on his school’s senior night and delivered a strong performance.

    With the whole James family in attendance, Bryce lead Sierra Canyon to an 84-42 victory over Loyola, scoring 12 points and recording five rebounds and four assists in the contest. Committed to play college basketball at the University of Arizona starting next year, the 6-foot-4 James is rated as a three-star prospect in spite of his limited appearances in high school.

    In earning the win, Sierra Canyon improves to 15-3 on the season and continues to be in the upper echelon of the California high school basketball scene. With the program currently ranked No. 17 in the state and with games still left to go against powerhouses such as Harvard-Westlake, the Trailblazers will look to stay dialed in ahead of what could be a very pivotal point of the season for their playoff chances.

    Officially committing to Arizona on New Years Day, James received offers from three other programs as well, with Ohio State, USC and Duquesne all showing interest. USC is the same school in which Bryce’s older brother, Bronny, played his lone NCAA season before turning pro. While Lebron never went to college, Ohio State is a school that he is a fan of given that he is a native of Ohio.

    Overall, Bryce has been ranked as the 47th-best shooting guard in the nation for his class while also being ranked as the 29th best overall player in California. But as he looks to finish his prep career strong ahead of joining the Big 12, James will attempt to prove the doubters wrong in the process and show that he can hang with anybody.

    LeBron James stepped into a three-point shot on the far side of the court, the ball perfectly rotating through the Friday night air, before it swished through the net. As he ran down the court, he shook his head and gritted his teeth.

    Then, James got to the right block, the Atlanta defender on his back, before he spun and swished a midrange jumper. After a stop, he took a step closer to the Atlanta bench, got back to almost that same spot, spun and swished another fadeaway, running past the Hawks as their coach, Quin Snyder, frustratingly called a timeout to try to put a stop to it.

    A day after James scored 38 points to lead the Lakers to a shorthanded win against Portland, he was at it again, this time against a dangerous Atlanta team. Looking ageless against a parade of young, athletic, long wings helplessly trying to stop him, James led the Lakers to a 119-102 win — their 20th of the season.

    James’ 30 points — the final two of which forced Snyder into that late timeout — gave him his 563rd 30-point game, one more than Michael Jordan for the most in NBA history.

    James, who starred without Anthony Davis against Portland, got Davis back on Friday. Davis scored 18 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, anchoring a terrific defensive performance.

    Austin Reaves scored 20 to go with seven rebounds and six assists, and Rui Hachimura and Dalton Knecht each added 13. Dorian Finney-Smith also hit a pair of corner threes on his way to eight points off the bench.

    The win, the Lakers’ seventh in their last nine games, was one of the team’s better all-around performances outside of 19 turnovers against Atlanta’s aggressive perimeter defense.

    While Trae Young scored 33 points, Max Christie harassed him for most of the game. The Lakers held Atlanta to just six-of-34 shooting from three while outrebounding Atlanta by 17.

    The Lakers now head to Texas for a pair of tough games, first with Houston on Sunday and then with Dallas on Tuesday before returning back to Los Angeles for their next eight games (seven at home and their first at the Intuit Dome).

    LeBron James climbed two historic rungs in one game in the Lakers’ 119-102 win over Atlanta on Friday.

    By taking the court, James passed one-time opponent and Hall of Fame forward Dirk Nowitzki for fourth all-time in games played. James, who turned 40 years old last week, has suited up in 1,523 total games and now trails only Robert Parish (1,611), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,560) and Vince Carter (1,541) in that category.

    James’ achievements in participation give way to production. His 30-point effort in Friday’s win propelled him past Michael Jordan for the most career 30-point games in NBA history.

    James hit an 18-foot jumper midway through the fourth quarter to secure the 563rd 30-point game of his 22-year career, breaking the record set in 2003 by his childhood idol.

     

    The top of the league’s record books are increasingly replete with James’ name. The 20-time All-Star and former No. 1 overall pick ranks first all-time in scoring and total minutes, fourth in assists, seventh in made 3-pointers, eighth in steals and eighth in defensive rebounds.

    LeBron James stepped into a three-point shot on the far side of the court, the ball perfectly rotating through the Friday night air, before it swished through the net. As he ran down the court, he shook his head and gritted his teeth.

    Then, James got to the right block, the Atlanta defender on his back, before he spun and swished a midrange jumper. After a stop, he took a step closer to the Atlanta bench, got back to almost that same spot, spun and swished another fadeaway, running past the Hawks as their coach, Quin Snyder, frustratingly called a timeout to try to put a stop to it.

    A day after James scored 38 points to lead the Lakers to a shorthanded win against Portland, he was at it again, this time against a dangerous Atlanta team. Looking ageless against a parade of young, athletic, long wings helplessly trying to stop him, James led the Lakers to a 119-102 win — their 20th of the season.

    James’ 30 points — the final two of which forced Snyder into that late timeout — gave him his 563rd 30-point game, one more than Michael Jordan for the most in NBA history.

    James, who starred without Anthony Davis against Portland, got Davis back on Friday. Davis scored 18 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, anchoring a terrific defensive performance.

    Austin Reaves scored 20 to go with seven rebounds and six assists, and Rui Hachimura and Dalton Knecht each added 13. Dorian Finney-Smith also hit a pair of corner threes on his way to eight points off the bench.

    The win, the Lakers’ seventh in their last nine games, was one of the team’s better all-around performances outside of 19 turnovers against Atlanta’s aggressive perimeter defense.

    While Trae Young scored 33 points, Max Christie harassed him for most of the game. The Lakers held Atlanta to just six-of-34 shooting from three while outrebounding Atlanta by 17.

    The Lakers now head to Texas for a pair of tough games, first with Houston on Sunday and then with Dallas on Tuesday before returning back to Los Angeles for their next eight games (seven at home and their first at the Intuit Dome).

    LOS ANGELES — LeBron James surpassed Michael Jordan’s NBA record for 30-point games during the Los Angeles Lakers‘ 119-102 win against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night.

    With an 18-foot jumper with 5:58 to play, James scored at least 30 points in the regular season for the 563rd time in his career, breaking the record established by Jordan in 2003. Jordan set the record in 1,072 career games over 15 seasons, while James broke the mark in his 1,523rd appearance over 22 seasons.

    James idolized Jordan during his childhood in Akron, Ohio, and when he passed Jordan for fourth place on the NBA’s career scoring list back in March 2019, the moment moved him to tears on the Lakers’ bench. He called Jordan “an inspiration” and “the lightning in a bottle for me, because I wanted to be like him.”

    Coincidentally, James also passed Dirk Nowitzki (1,522) for the fourth-most games played in the regular season in NBA history during the Lakers’ visit from the Hawks.

    James turned 40 last week, and he is among the few remaining active players who personally witnessed Jordan in his 1990s prime with the Chicago Bulls.

    But James shows absolutely no signs of slowing in his record-tying 22nd season: He scored 38 points against Portland one night earlier to tie Jordan’s 30-point mark.

    James hit seven 3-pointers against the Blazers while putting up the third-most points ever scored by a player over 40 — trailing only two games played by Jordan shortly after he turned 40 with Washington.

    James became the NBA’s career scoring leader last season, and he holds several additional longevity records. He has scored at least 10 points in 1,253 consecutive games over the past 18 years, obliterating the record set by Jordan from 1986 to 2001 (866).
