  • Two Free-Agent Relievers Off the Board: Jose Leclerc to the A’s, A.J. Minter to the Mets

Although Jed Hoyer and the Chicago Cubs still have time to find that much-needed (and implicitly promised) back-end free-agent reliever this offseason, two solid options just came off the board. This afternoon, news dropped that Jose Leclerc signed a one-year, $10M deal with the Athletics, while AJ Minter is signing a two-year, $22 million deal with the Mets (UPDATE: Looks like he may have an opt-out after one year, which is pretty unusual for a reliever).

When we discussed the Cubs’ plans to sign a top free-agent reliever earlier today, both Leclerc and Minter were part of that list of seven plausible targets: Carlos Estevez, A.J. Minter, Kirby Yates, Tommy Kahnle, David Robertson, Kenley Jansen, Jose Leclerc. But with those two down – and Tanner Scott still likely out of financial range – the list shrinks down to five. I still believe Yates is the guy they’re after, but each of the above has his pros and cons.

As for these deals, in particular, there’s nothing too shocking here (in terms of financials). I think both guys did well, but neither was rewarded so dramatically out of our projected range as to change our expectations for the Cubs. So that’s good, I suppose, for a team whose budget may be tighter than we previously expected.

As for the teams who landed these players, that’s a bit of a mixed bag. I don’t think anyone had the A’s making another (relatively) costly expenditure this offseason, even as they have spent more than usual as they gear up for their move to Vegas. So that’s one good relief target to a team we didn’t expect to sign one (bad for the Cubs’ leverage).

But the Mets are more of a surprise and a potentially/maybe/hopefully good thing for the Cubs. As a reminder, the Mets have been the team most often connected to Tanner Scott of late. And while NY (re: Steve Cohen) obviously still has the money to sign him, this deal for Minter does make that a little less likely and necessary. Scott will have plenty of suitors either way, but I really did think he’d be the next one to go (and to the Mets, specifically). I’m very curious to follow the fallout.

Zooming out one level higher, both of these signings are a bit of a surprise, as most expected Scott to sign before anyone else in this tier of the free-agent relief class. But neither Leclerc nor Minter (nor Jeff Hoffman, for that matter) waited for the top guy to set the market. So maybe others will soon follow suit.

Two Free-Agent Relievers Off the Board: Jose Leclerc to the A’s, A.J. Minter to the Mets

In a surprising turn of events, two sought-after free-agent relievers have found new homes in the MLB. The Oakland Athletics have signed Jose Leclerc, while the New York Mets have acquired A.J. Minter.

Leclerc, a former closer for the Texas Rangers, brings a wealth of experience and a powerful arm to the A’s bullpen. His ability to pitch in high-leverage situations will undoubtedly bolster Oakland’s pitching staff and provide much-needed depth in the late innings.

On the other hand, Minter’s addition to the Mets’ bullpen adds another talented arm to an already formidable relief corps. The left-handed pitcher has shown great potential throughout his career, and his versatility will be a valuable asset for New York as they look to strengthen their pitching staff for the upcoming season.

Both Leclerc and Minter are sure to make an immediate impact with their new teams, and fans can look forward to seeing their skills on display in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more exciting free-agent signings as the MLB offseason continues to heat up.

  • A’s sign relief pitcher, World Series champion José Leclerc to 1-year deal

    CBS News Sacramento

    Live

WEST SACRAMENTO – The Athletics announced Friday afternoon they have signed relief pitcher and World Series champion José Leclerc to a one-year deal.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the deal is worth $10 million.

Leclerc has played eight seasons for the Texas Rangers, posting a 3.27 ERA in 360.1 innings pitched. Last season, he posted a 4.32 ERA in 66.2 innings of work.

He was a part of the 2023 World Series Rangers team, allowing one hit over three innings in the fall classic against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Leclerc is not the only player to join the A’s for their first temporary season in West Sacramento. The team signed its largest guaranteed contract in team history, inking in Luis Severino for three years.

They also signed third baseman Gio Urshela and acquired left-handers Jeffrey Springs and Jacob Lopez from the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Oakland Athletics have made a big move to bolster their bullpen, signing World Series champion relief pitcher José Leclerc to a 1-year deal. Leclerc, who has spent his entire career with the Texas Rangers, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to the A’s pitching staff.

Leclerc, 27, was a key contributor to the Rangers’ bullpen during their 2016 playoff run, and he played a crucial role in helping the team secure their first World Series title in over two decades. Known for his electric stuff and ability to pitch in high-pressure situations, Leclerc will provide the A’s with a valuable late-inning option to help shut down opposing offenses.

The signing of Leclerc is a significant addition for the Athletics, who are looking to build on their success from last season and make a deep postseason run. With a strong starting rotation and now a formidable bullpen, the A’s are shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with in the American League.

Fans can look forward to seeing Leclerc in action in the green and gold this upcoming season, as he looks to continue his winning ways and help lead the Athletics to championship glory. Stay tuned for more updates on the A’s offseason moves as they gear up for another exciting year of baseball.

  • Athletics Agree to Terms with RHP José Leclerc on One-Year Contract

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher José Leclerc on a one-year contract for the 2025 season, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Will Klein for assignment.

Leclerc was 6-5 with a save, a 4.32 ERA and .671 opponents OPS in 64 relief appearances with Texas last year. He struck out 89 batters in 66.2 innings (12.02 per nine innings) and tied for 14th in the majors among relievers in strikeouts. The 31-year-old right-hander had a career high in wins, and his games pitched, innings pitched and strikeouts were the second most of his career and his most since 2019. Leclerc held the opposition to a .227 batting average, including .193 against right-handed hitters, but walked 32 for a .323 on-base percentage.

Leclerc has pitched eight seasons in the majors, all with Texas, and is 12-20 with 41 saves and a 3.27 ERA in 350 career appearances. He has 473 strikeouts in 360.1 innings (11.81 per nine innings) and is the Rangers/Senators franchise record holder for most strikeouts by a reliever. Originally signed by Texas out of the Dominican Republic in 2010 at the age of 16, Leclerc made his Major League debut in 2016. He logged a 1.56 ERA and 12 saves in 59 relief appearances in 2018 and had 14 saves and 100 strikeouts in 68.2 innings over 70 relief appearances in 2019. Leclerc missed nearly the entire 2020 season with a torn right teres major muscle and was out for the entire 2021 season following “Tommy John” surgery. He has pitched in 160 games in three seasons since the surgery and has a 3.36 ERA, .629 opponents OPS and 210 strikeouts in 171.1 innings since his return.

Klein was one of three players acquired from Kansas City in the Lucas Erceg trade on July 30, 2024. He made his Major League debut last year, pitching in five games for the Royals and three for the A’s. The 25-year-old right-hander combined for an 11.05 ERA and .990 opponents OPS in eight games overall. Klein spent the balance of the season at the Triple-A level and was a combined 2-2 with a minor league career-high nine saves, a 3.77 ERA and .645 opponents OPS in 38 relief appearances with Omaha (34 games) and Las Vegas (four games).

The Athletics have reached an agreement with right-handed pitcher José Leclerc on a one-year contract. Leclerc, who was previously with the Texas Rangers, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Oakland bullpen.

The 28-year-old Dominican native has been a reliable and effective reliever throughout his career, boasting a career ERA of 3.19 and 295 strikeouts in 220 innings pitched. Known for his electric fastball and devastating slider, Leclerc has the ability to shut down opposing hitters in high-leverage situations.

With the addition of Leclerc, the Athletics’ bullpen gets a significant boost, adding depth and versatility to an already strong pitching staff. His presence will undoubtedly improve the team’s chances of success in the upcoming season.

Athletics fans can look forward to seeing Leclerc take the mound in the green and gold, as he brings his talents to Oakland and helps lead the team to victory. Stay tuned for more updates as the season approaches.

  • Jose Leclerc contract with Athletics

The Athletics agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher on a one-year contract for the 2025 season, the club announced on Friday. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Will Klein for assignment. Though the team did not disclose financial terms, the deal is worth $10 million, a source told MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos.

A longtime Ranger, Leclerc debuted in 2016 when Texas won the AL West and was on the team that won the club’s first World Series in 2023. After posting a 2.68 ERA and striking out 67 batters in 57 innings in the Rangers’ title season, Leclerc saw his ERA jump to 4.32 in 66 2/3 innings last year.

That ERA, however, might be misleading, as Leclerc’s overall profile didn’t noticeably change. He had a slight uptick in strikeouts and a decrease in both walks and barrels, which is why his 3.57 expected ERA paints his season in a more positive light.

The right-hander mainly relies on four pitches — a four-seamer, slider, cutter and changeup — all of which generate plenty of whiffs. Leclerc ranked in the 96th percentile in whiff rate in each of the past two seasons, with most of his swings and misses coming on a nasty slider that produced an elite 47.2 percent whiff rate.

Because he debuted at 22 years old, Leclerc will be entering his age-31 season next year and should have plenty left in the tank. All of his underlying numbers point to a reliable arm in the back end of a bullpen.

The Oakland Athletics have signed relief pitcher Jose Leclerc to a new contract, solidifying their bullpen for the upcoming season. Leclerc, who previously played for the Texas Rangers, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Athletics’ pitching staff.

The terms of the contract have not been disclosed, but it is expected that Leclerc will play a key role in the Athletics’ bullpen, providing stability and leadership in high-pressure situations. With his impressive track record and proven ability to get crucial outs, Leclerc is sure to be a valuable asset for the team.

Athletics fans can look forward to seeing Leclerc take the mound and help lead the team to victory in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new addition to the Athletics roster!
