Tom Izzo’s travel trouble anger provides valuable lesson about Spartans
EAST LANSING – After picking up a rare win at Madison Square Garden on Saturday afternoon, Tom Izzo had plans for the evening.
The Michigan State coach intended to get back on campus and attend the hockey game before preparing for the team’s next matchup. Initially expecting to be back in East Lansing about 6:30 p.m., the Spartans didn’t return until about 3:30 a.m. due to flight delays.
“As crazy as it sounds,” Izzo said on Monday, “after the game and yesterday, I learned as much about my team as I did in five games of competition.”
After topping Rutgers 81-74 on Saturday for their 12th straight win to snap Izzo’s five-game skid at MSG, the No. 7 Spartans (17-2, 8-0 Big Ten) left New York for their charter flight out of Newark. Then maintenance delays piled up both on the tarmac and at a local hotel before the wheels finally went up about 1:20 a.m.
“I didn’t have one guy complaining. … The coach was complaining, I promise you that,” Izzo said. “There were people that got a few ear loads of what I thought of the whole deal because I didn’t think it was handled right, people were lying to us about things.”
It was the team’s second straight road trip with travel problems, following delays getting in and out of Chicago earlier this month for a game at Northwestern. Senior guard Jaden Akins spent the downtime in Newark watching film and movies and getting a little sleep. The Spartans returned to the court on Sunday with an altered schedule amid a quick turnaround before hosting Minnesota (11-9, 3-6), which has won three straight, on Tuesday (8 p.m., Peacock) at the Breslin Center.
“The meetings were great, the practice we cut it short but we got at it a little bit and they were great,” Izzo said. “I think that was a sign of maturity. The head coach was immature, the players were very mature.”
Even with some private flight problems, a lot of people would gladly take Michigan State’s team travel accommodations. There will be a lot bigger challenges ahead for the Spartans, who are wildly exceeding preseason expectations. So far.
“I think we’re building a base that’s good enough to handle a lot of things,” Izzo said. “We’ll see if that’s true.”

In an exclusive interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff for Collider Forces, pop legend Robbie Williams opened up about his creative process for Better Man, the musical biopic chronicling his life, and revealed a fascinating behind-the-scenes story about his approach to the film’s soundtrack. As it turns out, even global superstars like Williams sometimes need a reality check.
Better Man chronicles the life of Williams, who has been a pop idol and icon in the United Kingdom for around 30 years now. It follows his early days as a member of the boyband Take That to his rise as a solo superstar, and also explores the darker aspects of Williams’ life, including his struggles with mental health, addiction, and fame. Oh, and he’s also portrayed as a CGI chimpanzee in the movie.
Discussing his involvement in shaping the music for the film, Williams shared that he initially pushed for certain songs to be included — only to later realise they didn’t fit the tone of the movie. Williams recalled making the mistake, referencing his work putting together the soundtrack with director Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman). He told Collider:
“I was sending these songs over that I’m like, ‘That’s a banger. That’s a banger. You are wrong,’. And I’d heard this story about ‘Lose Yourself’ in 8 Mile and how the director had sent that back, and Eminem was right. And I’m like, ‘I’m Eminem in this moment. That one’s the song, and you are wrong.’”
Robbie Williams Realized the Music Needed More of a Delicate Touch
However, as Williams eventually discovered, Gracey’s vision for Better Man required a more delicate touch. “Then I saw the finished version, and I was like, ‘I totally get why those songs weren’t the ones chosen, and I totally get what you need there.’ What I was sending wasn’t a cuddle. What I was sending wasn’t soothing. What I was sending wasn’t healing,” he admitted.
Williams ultimately found the right musical balance with the help of songwriter and producer Freddy Wexler. Reflecting on the collaboration, Williams expressed gratitude for the learning experience, saying, “Then we delivered, thank God. Me and a wonderful songwriter and producer called Freddy Wexler. Incredibly talented. Namaste. Love him.”

During a press conference on Thursday, Harbaugh declared that he has a bunch of “young, healthy” athletes with “hearts that pump warm blood” before describing how blood travels throughout the body.
“We had a little rainfall last week at practice,” said Harbaugh. “That was great to have that. Most all of us have played in those kinds of games or grew up in that kind of weather. The bottom line is these guys are young. They are healthy and their heart pumps warm blood. Pumps it from the arteries to the veins to the tributaries to the capillaries. Throughout their whole body. You just play ball. That’s been my experience.”
Harbaugh then reminded everyone he is not a doctor, which was already made clear when he referenced “tributaries.”
“I might have gotten that in the wrong order there,” he said. “It’s well-documented, I am not a doctor. But I know it’s warm blood that young, healthy, athletic guys are able to generate.”
