  • Preview: Hatayspor vs. Galatasaray – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday’s Turkish Super Lig clash between Hatayspor and Galatasaray, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

A clash between a title favourite and a relegation candidate will unfold at Mersin Stadium when Hatayspor host Galatasaray on Friday to kick off the second round of matches in the 2024-25 Turkish Super Lig season.

Both sides faced off on the opening weekend of this campaign, with two late goals from Mauro Icardi and Michy Batshuayi securing a comeback 2-1 victory for Cimbom on home soil.

Hatayspor will be led by their third full-time manager of the season – Murat Sahin, who steps into his first head coach role after serving as an assistant in the past, aiming to steer the team clear of relegation in what is shaping up to be a challenging season.

Yilmaz Bal‘s brief interim tenure ended after two consecutive 2-1 defeats—first to Fenerbahce in their opening match of the year, and more recently against Caykur Rizespor last Saturday.

The Star of the South are enduring a dire run of form, winless in seven straight league matches and managing just one victory in their last 18 Super Lig outings, a dismal record that leaves them second-bottom in the table with nine points, a daunting 11 points adrift of safety.

However, a strong performance and any positive result on Friday could reignite their survival hopes, and encouragingly for the hosts, they boast an impressive home record against the visitors, winning four of the last five encounters at Mersin Stadium, including a 2-1 triumph in their most recent meeting at this venue.

Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk at a press conference on August 26, 2024© Imago

Meanwhile, Galatasaray are battling external distractions stemming from Fenerbahce’s accusations of refereeing bias, but despite the noise, Cimbom remain focused on defending their Super Lig crown.

Okan Buruk‘s side overcame poor weather conditions and a resilient Istanbul Basaksehir team, previously unbeaten at home, with a Baris Yilmaz brace sealing a 2-1 victory, marking his ninth and tenth of the season, making him the club’s joint-top scorer alongside Victor Osimhen.

Following the match, Fenerbahce issued a fiery statement, alleging that the game had been “gifted” to Galatasaray, claiming VAR had favoured Basaksehir, and calling on the Turkish Football Federation to intervene.

Galatasaray responded with a defiant statement, saying: “In spite of those who are kept in the race by the power of VAR… the immoral people who believe their own lies; in the end, the good guys will win again!”

Despite the off-field drama, Galatasaray’s flawless away record of eight wins in eight matches underscores their dominance this season – however, a trip to a historically tricky ground adds another layer of intrigue to this contest.

Hatayspor will be without midfielder Jonathan Okoronkwo, who remains sidelined with a foot injury until next month.

Galatasaray continue to cope with the absence of Icardi, who is out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

Midfielder Gabriel Sara has joined Icardi on the sidelines, ruled out until next month with a hamstring issue.

    Hatayspor possible starting lineup:
Bekaj; Alici, Calvo, Kilama, Corecki; Parmak; Diack, Pedro, Boutobba, Fernandes; Aboubakar

  • Preview: Al-Taawoun vs. Al-Nassr – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday’s Saudi Pro League clash between Al-Taawoun and Al-Nassr, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

After securing a bounce-back win in their first outing of the year, Al-Nassr travel to Al-Taawoun this Thursday for round 15 of Saudi Pro League.

The Knight of Najd ended 2024 on a bad note, losing their last two matches across all competitions, but snapped that run with a 3-1 league victory against Al Okhdood at Al-Awwal Park last Thursday, leaving them third in the standings, nine adrift of first-placed Al-Hilal and second-placed Al Ittihad.

    Match preview

Al Nassr head coach Stefano Pioli on September 15, 2024© Imago

Al-Nassr were staring down the barrel of a third straight loss when Saviour Godwin scored in the sixth minute to hand their opponents the lead, but a Sadio Mane brace coming either side of Cristiano Ronaldo‘s penalty ensured a turnaround win.

The veteran attacker, with less than a year left on his contract, has now tallied 11 goals in 13 outings in this season’s top flight, placing him just one behind Aleksandar Mitrovic, who leads the Golden Boot race.

Aware of his immense value, the Riyadh-based outfit are keen to keep their most prized asset beyond this season and are reportedly in advanced talks with the 39-year-old, who is set to bag another lucrative deal.

With their latest triumph, Al-Nassr have now collected 28 points from 14 games in the top flight, having won eight, drawn four and lost two.

Half of those victories have come on the road, leaving them with the fourth-best away record in the division, having picked up 13 points from a possible 18.

Al-Nassr will hope this statistic counts for something as they embark on another adventure to the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium, where they recorded a 4-1 victory against Al-Taawoun on their last league visit, though triumphs at this ground have not come too often.

A win on Thursday will see Stefano Pioli‘s side record consecutive away victories against the hosts in the top flight for just the second time ever, having achieved this feat between December 2011 and August 2012, when they emerged 2-1 winners in both encounters.

Al-Taawoun, however, had the last laugh in this fixture, eliminating Al-Nassr in this season’s King Cup round of 16 with a 1-0 victory at Al-Awwal Park.

The Wolves themselves saw their journey in the competition come to an end in the next round with a humbling 3-0 loss to Al Qadisiya on home turf on January 7.

That defeat marked a second consecutive setback across all competitions, following a 4-2 league loss to Al Ahli SC in front of their fans, though they snapped that streak in dramatic fashion.

Just four days after their cup exit, Al-Taawoun travelled to the Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium and exacted revenge on Al Qadisiya with an identical 3-0 scoreline, restoring pride after that humiliating defeat.

In their dominant revenge win, the Wolves wasted no time getting down to business, with Musa Barrow opening the scoring barely a minute into the game, followed by a Waleed Al-Ahmad strike in the 33rd minute before the former completed his brace in the 75th.

With their latest triumph, Al-Taawoun sit eighth in the standings, having collected 21 points from 14 matches, six adrift of the visitors, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.

The Sugar of Al-Qassim will hope to make it two wins in a row when they welcome Al-Nassr on Thursday, though back-to-back home defeats across all competitions may dampen their hopes despite four wins from seven top-flight outings on their ground.

    Team News

Abdullah Al-Khaibari remains sidelined with a muscle tear, with his expected return set for later this month, while long-term absentees Sami Al-Najei (cruciate ligament) and Ayman Yahya (leg) continue their recovery.

Marcelo Brozovic is expected to return to the starting XI after missing the last outing due to accumulated yellow cards.

Ronaldo has netted five goals in his last four league games for Al-Nassr, and the prolific veteran will look to continue his rich vein of form when he leads the line on Thursday.

As for the hosts, Mohammed Mahzari received his marching orders in the 51st minute of their win last time out, making the 22-year-old unavailable as he serves his suspension.

This will force manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena to make adjustments to his five-man backline from the previous game, potentially reverting to a three-man defence with Al-Ahmad, who scored in that match, pairing with Awn Al-Saluli and Andrei Girotto.

Following his brace against Al Qadisiya, Barrow has now tallied nine goals, making him the fourth-highest scorer in the league, and he is expected to lead the line once again on Thursday.

    Al-Taawoun possible starting lineup:
Maylson; Al-Ahmad, Al-Saluli, Girotto; Al Nasser, Fajr, El Mahdioui, Bahusayn, Al-Abdulrazzaq, Al Hosawi, Barrow

    Al-Nassr possible starting lineup:
Bento; Al Ghanam, Simakan, Laporte, Boushal; Brozovic, Otavio; Angelo, Al Ghareeb, Mane; Ronaldo

    SM words green background

    We say: Al-Taawoun 1-2 Al-Nassr

With five goals in his last four league games, Ronaldo’s form could be pivotal as Al-Nassr seek consecutive league victories.

The Knight of Najd have claimed four wins from six trips in the league, while Al-Taawoun’s back-to-back home defeats across all competitions hint at another possible setback for the hosts.

Bournemouth vs Everton: Preview, predictions and lineups

Seventh-placed Bournemouth start the new Premier League year with a visit from Everton on Saturday afternoon.

The Cherries finished 2024 in impressive form, securing three wins and three draws in December. Two of those victories came against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United as Andoni Iraola’s high-octane approach punished the struggling giants.

Bournemouth could climb as high as fifth should they taste victory this weekend and other results go their way, but Everton will prove a stern challenge. The Toffees secured impressive draws against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City on the bounce during December, results that have helped them move two points clear of the relegation zone.

The reverse fixture served up one of the most dramatic comebacks in Premier League history. Everton were two goals ahead until the 87th minute at Goodison Park but conceded three times in the closing stages in a gut-wrenching defeat.

    Justin Kluivert

Justin Kluivert returns from suspension / James Gill – Danehouse/GettyImages

Bournemouth welcome Justin Kluivert back from suspension after he missed the Fulham clash and Iraola has confirmed that Tyler Adams is available after a knock ruled him out last weekend. However, the Spanish coach confirmed no other absentees will make their comebacks against Everton.

That means that Adam Smith, Marcos Senesi and Julian Araujo are all missing in the backline, while Marcus Tavernier, Alex Scott and Luis Sinisterra are unavailable further forward.

Bournemouth predicted lineup vs Everton (4-2-3-1): Kepa; Hill, Zabarnyi, Huijsen, Kerkez; Adams, Christie; Ouatarra, Kluivert, Semenyo; Evanilson.

    Dwight McNeil

Dwight McNeil is likely to miss out / James Gill – Danehouse/GettyImages

Sean Dyche has revealed that Dwight McNeil is almost certain to miss out on the trip to Bournemouth having been sidelined since early December. Seamus Coleman is also missing due to a muscle injury but his issue “is nothing too serious” according to his manager.

Long-term absentees Tim Iroegbunam and James Garner are both unavailable for selection. They’re back on the grass but remain some way off making their comebacks.

Everton predicted lineup vs Bournemouth (4-4-1-1): Pickford; Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Harrison, Mangala, Gueye, Ndiaye; Doucoure; Calvert-Lewin.

Bournemouth have been largely impressive on home soil this season and have beaten the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Spurs at the Vitality Stadium. However, their intense and gung-ho approach may ironically prove less effective against Everton’s stubborn low block.

The Toffees will seek to frustrate their hosts and have done a stellar job of restricting their opponents in recent weeks. However, the return of Kluivert completes a menacing Cherries forward line, who should have enough quality to bypass Dyche’s defensive unit.

    Prediction: Bournemouth 2-1 Everton

  • Chicago Blackhawks vs. Montreal Canadiens NHL January 3, 2025: Preview, how to watch, lineups

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Montreal Canadiens NHL January 3, 2025: Preview, how to watch, lineups

The Chicago Blackhawks look to end a five-game skid on Friday night as they host the Montreal Canadiens at the United Center.

The Canadiens are on a nice little run, going 7-3-0 in their last 10, including a current three-game winning streak. Their latest three wins have been pretty impressive, too: they outscored the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Vegas Golden Knights to an aggregate tune of 12-4. Against the Golden Knights, the Canadiens showed resiliency by overcoming a two-goal deficit and scoring three unanswered goals to win 3-2 on Tuesday. Cole Caufield, Emil Heineman, and Kirby Dach were the goal scorers for the Canadiens and Sam Montembeault made 27 saves for Montreal. It was also their third game in four nights, and puts Montreal just three points out of a playoff spot.

Speaking of Caufield, he’s the scoring leader for the Canadiens with 19 goals as well as second on the team in points with 34 in 39 games. Nick Suzuki has a couple more points (11 G, 25 A) in the same span for team lead in points. After those two, Montreal’s top-six is solid but there’s a a gap in production. Patrik Laine is the next closest with his 0.77 points-per-game rate in 13 games while Jake Evans and Juraj Slafkovsky each have a 0.62 PPG rate.

However, during the current run of success, it’s really the fourth line of Joel Armia, Jake Evans, and Emil Heineman that have been having quite an impact. In their last seven games, for example, Armia has been on the ice for half the goals scored by the Canadiens (11 of 23) while his two linemates have been on for nine goals each. Conversely, the trio has only been on ice for one goal against.

On defense, the story has of course been rookie Lane Hutson, who’ll likely be a Calder finalist with his 26 points (2 G, 24 A) in 37 games while playing the second most minutes (22:26 per game) among the Habs’ defensemen behind Mike Matheson (24:19, with 18 points in 35 games). The top-four is rounded out by Alexandre Carrier, who was acquired from the Nashville Predators on Dec. 18 and has four assists in six games, and Kaiden Guhle, his up-and-coming young partner.

The Canadiens will likely run the same lines and pairings as they did on Tuesday against VGK:

One final thing for the Blackhawks to look out for: the Canadiens are one of the most penalized teams in the league, but they’ve killed 20 of 21 penalties over their latest seven-game run, making them a top-10 penalty kill team.

Unlike the Canadiens, the Blackhawks finished the 2024 year on a whopper of a bad note, losing five straight while being outscored 27-12 in that span. This included their 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues in the Winter Classic on Tuesday, when the play on the ice was closer than the score indicated, but it was still an embarrassing outing. Taylor Hall and Tyler Bertuzzi each scored. Connor Bedard also picked up an assist, extending his point streak (3G, 4A) to five games — a season high.

The Blackhawks held an optional morning skate on Friday with only several of the younger players attending — specifically, Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar, Colton Dach, Lukas Reichel, Philipp Kurashev, and Louis Crevier — along with Petr Mrazek, so they’ll likely roll the lines they did Thursday. Arvid Soderblom will star in net. Connor Murphy, who still needs to have his groin injury evaluated, has been ruled out for Friday night, and Wyatt Kaiser will draw back into the lineup on a pairing with Seth Jones.

Rant incoming … The issue with sitting Reichel because he need more of an “attack mentality,” as Anders Sorensen stated Thursday, is that it’s like they want Reichel to be a player he’s not and then also put him in a situation where that is difficult to achieve. Reichel absolutely does need to shoot more, but who on his line is passing him the puck much? Nazar, who is also a playmaker first, has only a marginally better shot rate (3.4) than Reichel (3.2) at 5-on-5, but he’s absolutely has better linemates and also has zero finish so far since the coaching change. Pat Maroon has a better shots rate but nearly 70 percent of those are preceded by a touch from Reichel. On top of that, despite shooting less, Reichel’s so-so expected goals rate of 0.46 is exactly the same as Nick Foligno (0.46) and basically the same as Connor Bedard (0.47) and Teuvo Teravainen (0.48) in the same span. Considering Reichel, Bedard and Teravainen are all the primary acting playmakers on their lines, it’s no wonder their rates are similar — there’s less of an excuse for Foligno.

None of this is to say that Reichel has fully proven he’s an NHL player or that he doesn’t have issues in his game, but this is a rebuild — play the young players — and there’s no objective way to say Reichel has been the worst player on the ice. As Mark Lazerus of The Athletic pointed out, “this feels like the Kaapo Kakko thing: ‘I have not been the worst guy.’” The concern is that Reichel will be re;egated to the press box for long periods like Kurashev, who has only played in two games since Dec. 15. As long as this is a temporary “get your head straight” kind of thing, it’s fine. Too much beyond that and it’s makes me worry about how the Blackhawks will handle all their mid-first round picks who aren’t immediate plug-in successes.

    Alright, rant over.

The big story of the game is the call-up of Colton Dach: injuries derailed his first professional season in 2023-24, but he’s been a consistent force for the Rockford IceHogs, and it’ll be exciting to see him in action. Dach is being slotted on a line with former IceHogs linemate Frank Nazar, a duo that had strong chemistry with Rockford.

One final thing to watch out for Friday will be how much playing time and where Jones is used. He’s still listed on the top pairing, but he’s been playing slightly less than Alex Vlasic the last couple of games, with the Winter Classic being Jones’ lowest TOI (20:29) of the season. Considering the penalty kill and power play were both doing better without Jones on them, it might be in the Blackhawks best interest if they could lower his involvement somewhat. He’s struggled mightily on the defense side of things since coming back from injury, which is not unexpected, so easing him into a bigger role may be the more prudent strategy.

Preview: Pontevedra CF vs. Mallorca – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday’s Copa del Rey clash between Pontevedra CF and Mallorca, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Mallorca will be aiming to book their spot in the last-16 stage of the Copa del Rey when they tackle Pontevedra CF on Friday evening.

The visitors entered the winter break in Spain off the back of successive wins over Girona and Getafe, which moved them into sixth spot in the La Liga table, while fourth-tier outfit Pontevedra have been victorious in each of their last five matches in all competitions.

    Match preview

Pontevedra have already claimed two big scalps in this season’s Copa del Rey, beating Levante and Villarreal to reach the round of 32, and they will be bidding to record another huge win in the competition on Friday night.

Yago Iglesias‘s side are enjoying an excellent season across the board, and they will enter this clash off the back of five straight wins, including four in the league, which has left them at the top of the Segunda Division RFEF Group 1 on 39 points.

Ponte have not been present in the last-32 stage of the Copa del Rey since 2007-08, while they have not been in the round of 16 since 1971-72, which is an indication of what is on offer for the hosts here.

Pontevedra are unbeaten in their last seven matches in front of their own supporters, recording six wins in the process, and having beaten Villarreal at home in the competition last time out, they will be full of confidence entering this clash.

Mallorca head coach Jagoba Arrasate on September 23, 2024© Imago

Mallorca, meanwhile, entered the international break in Spain off the back of successive wins over Girona and Getafe, which moved them into sixth position in the La Liga table on 30 points, six points outside the Champions League spots.

The Pirates were 15th in Spain’s top flight last term but have the look of European challengers this term, and there is no question that their main focus will be on the league in the coming months.

However, they reached the final of last season’s Copa del Rey, losing to Athletic Bilbao, and Los Bermellones won the competition back in 2002-03.

Jagoba Arrasate‘s side will take on Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup on January 9 ahead of a potential final against either Athletic Bilbao or Barcelona on January 11.

Mallorca are back in league action against Villarreal on January 20, meanwhile, and it will be fascinating to see what the team can achieve this season, as there is a lot of talent in the squad.

    Team News

Mallorca's Sergi Darder on August 18, 2024© Imago

Dalisson de Almeida has been Pontevedra’s outstanding performer this season, scoring nine goals and registering one assist in 19 appearances, and the 24-year-old should start for the home side in this clash.

Chiqui has also been in excellent form, managing five goals and three assists in 18 appearances, and the 27-year-old is set to be another starter for the fourth-tier outfit in the clash with Mallorca.

No injuries have been reported from the team’s 2-1 win over Real Avila before the winter break, so it is expected to be the same squad available for the Copa del Rey fixture with Mallorca.

The visitors could be without the services of Samu Costa due to a muscular problem, but head coach Arrasate could otherwise have a full squad, with Manu Morlanes and Vedat Muriqi available after recent suspensions.

There will be changes from the side that started against Getafe before the winter break, with Robert Navarro, Copete, Abdon Prats, Toni Lato, Mateu Morey among those set to come into the XI.

There is also expected to be a spot between the sticks for Ivan Cuellar, as Arrasate prepares to ring the changes, but Sergi Darder is likely to retain his spot in a wide midfield position.

    Pontevedra CF possible starting lineup:
Vizoso; Fontan, Garay, Gomez, Hernandez; Mayo; Dali, Novo, Pino, Chiqui; Lopez

    Mallorca possible starting lineup:
Cuellar; Morey, Valjent, Copete, Lato; Navarro, A Sanchez, Mascarell, Darder; Larin, Prats

    SM words green background

We say: Pontevedra CF 1-3 Mallorca

Pontevedra are a strong outfit in good form, and we are expecting the hosts to give their fans a goal to cheer on Friday night, but Mallorca’s superior quality all over the field should allow them to advance to the next stage of the competition.
