Larry Krasner says local police can’t be forced by ICE to comply with the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said Friday that local elected officials and law enforcement cannot be forced to comply with the Trump administration’s “Nazi stuff,” referring to the president’s planned crackdown on immigration.
“Local law enforcement can volunteer to do Nazi stuff,” Krasner, a Democrat, said. “I’m sure I stand with all my colleagues up here when we say nope, N-O-P-E, nope. Maybe there are some local law enforcement who want to put on jackboots and gray uniforms and march behind this, but not us.”
The comment came during a news conference Friday at Philadelphia City Hall where state representatives and City Council members condemned President Donald Trump’s actions on immigration, including rescinding guidance that once barred federal agents from entering churches, schools, and hospitals. Reports of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity have reverberated around the Philadelphia area since Trump took office, heightening anxieties for immigrant communities. Earlier this week, ICE agents raided a North Philadelphia car wash, arresting seven people and triggering a protest.
Officials on Friday aimed to make the public aware of Philadelphia’s intentions to protect its immigrant communities in the sanctuary city.
Krasner, who has long positioned himself as and campaigned on being a staunch adversary to Trump, is expected to launch his reelection bid for a third term as DA in the coming weeks. Earlier this month, former Philadelphia Judge Patrick Dugan announced his bid to challenge Krasner.
Krasner said the basis of local officials’ noncompliance with federal orders is supported by the Anti-Commandeering Doctrine, which is based on the Tenth Amendment and says “the federal government cannot require states or state officials to adopt or enforce federal law,” according to SCOTUSBlog.
A memo from Trump’s Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, published in various news outlets last week, threatened consequences for local officials who do not cooperate with Trump’s plans to crack down on immigration, adding that local officials are legally bound to cooperate with the U.S. Department of Justice based on the Constitution’s supremacy clause.
In light of that memo, Krasner said he and his staff would not comply with any immigration orders that break the law.
He expressed a similar sentiment Friday, also acknowledging that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement “is going to do what it is legally and constitutionally entitled to do.
”As a law enforcement officer, we would not interfere with that,” Krasner said.
But Krasner added that his office will not hold back from prosecuting ICE agents in Philadelphia for doing “criminal things that go beyond their rights.”
“Any ICE agent, any Proud Boy who thinks hate crimes are cool, thinks ‘I can get away with anything because there’s a king in D.C.?’ No, you can’t. That’s not how it’s going to work,” Krasner said.
“If you are so inclined to break the law to harm immigrants … if you are inclined to use them as your scapegoat, harm them, be cruel to them, you better do it within the law, and if you don’t, try me.”

Criticism is escalating over what the Federal Aviation Administration knew all along about those mysterious drones that triggered high anxiety in communities across New Jersey in November and December.
Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden expressed disappointment after the White House revealed on Tuesday, Jan. 28 that many of the drones flown in large numbers over the state were authorized by the FAA.
The White House claimed they were for research and various other reasons.
“They should have told the American people,” Sheriff Golden said. “It’s not fair. And certainly they could have quelled it. Somebody from the FAA certainly had to see all the national reporting that was going on, and could have made the phone call. They didn’t.”
According to Golden, this lack of communication meant that numerous law enforcement agencies were kept in the dark about the drones and an unnecessary deployment of resources.
The Ocean County Sheriff’s department launched its own drone surveillance.
Call volume at its 911 center spiked about 50% higher than normal.
“We always tell, the federal government, law enforcement, if you see something, say something. Well, they should have said something,” Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy said.
The National Aerospace Research and Technology Park is situated next to the FAA’s Tech Center in Egg Harbor Township.
The president of the park said he can’t speak specifically to the recent drone activity but says current research at the park involves new approaches to how radar is used.
“The next phase of aviation will involve a degree of autonomous flight,” NARTP president Howard Kyle said. “Radar provides the sort of coverage you need to direct aircraft that might be flying autonomously.”
Monmouth County’s Sheriff says he’s pushing for congressional hearings on how all this was handled and for policy changes to make the notification process more transparent with better coordination.
An FAA spokesperson directed questions to the White House which did not respond to NBC10’s request for comment.

Two people were critically injured Wednesday afternoon when a small plane crashed and burned near Highway 101 in Goleta, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
The aircraft, reportedly a single-engine Cirrus SR22, went down at about 2:15 p.m. on the Bishop Ranch, north of the freeway between Glen Annie Road and Los Carneros Road.
The 4-seat plane caught fire after the crash, and was putting up a large column of black smoke.
Two people — a 29-year-old man and a 32-ear-old woman — were on board the aircraft, according to fire Capt. Scott Safechuck.

The crash sparked a small vegetation fire in the area, which firefighters quickly contained, according to authorities.
The California Highway Patrol briefly closed one northbound Highway 101 lane in the area of the crash, and the Los Carneros Road offramp, causing a traffic back-up.

The crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol also responded to the incident.

Dottin: I came out with a vengeance | Local Sports
Disappointed with the manner in which she was dismissed in the second One Day International against Bangladesh, Deandra Dottin had a point to prove in the opening T20I.
The 33-year-old made right things wrong on Monday night, bludgeoning seven sixes in scoring a 21-ball half-century to help lead West Indies women to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh women at Warner Park. It was the fastest half-century by a West Indies woman in T20 cricket and tied for fifth fastest in Women’s T20 internationals.
Dottin’s seven sixes is also tied for the sixth most by a woman in a T20I innings. Speaking during a post-match interview on Monday, Dottin admitted that she came with a plan to be aggressive from the get-go. She said the fact that the match was being played at Warner Park made her performance even more enjoyable.
“I think this is my favourite venue in the Caribbean after the 2010 World Cup and scoring the fastest hundred. But I basically came out with a little vengeance after getting out early in one of the ODIs, so I just said I was coming out to beat ball. It’s either I get them, or they get me,” Dottin said jokingly.
The Barbadian who came out of retirement last year, has the most sixes in Women’s T20 internationals with 124 sixes in 137 matches. Sophie Devine of New Zealand is second with 114 sixes from 143 matches while Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu has hit 88 sixes in 143 matches.
Dottin explained that her batting approach varied based on the conditions of the pitch and the bowling unit. However, she said she always backed herself to perform regardless of where and who she was playing against.
“Sometimes I do get off to a fast start, sometimes I don’t. It’s just a matter of assessing the pitch and just feeling out the bowlers, kind of getting them comfortable and giving them a false sense of security,” Dottin said. “So just like how I started tonight, I just got comfortable and then after that I picked my areas to hit the ball.
“It’s just a matter of backing yourself, assessing the conditions and the pitch really quickly and taking on the bowlers that are weak in a sense. But like I said, it all boils down to believing in yourself and having that determination and wanting it more,” she added.

The Washoe County School Board has voted to approve a temporary closure of Pine Middle School as a part of the 2023 Facility Modernization Plan.
The school will be shut down during the 2026-2027 school year for the purpose of reconstructing a pre-k through 5th grade facility at that location.
“Tonight we presented the ultimate findings and recommendations basically for a variety of reasons,” said Adam Searcy, Chief Operating Officer of WCSD. “A traditional pre-k through 5th elementary school facility is recommended as best suited to be reconstructed on the current campuses.”
Searcy says this facility will serve Smithridge Elementary, Dodson, Duncan Glenn, Lemelson Stem Academy, and other schools in that area.
He tells us the next steps will be to return with design contracts and other necessities to prepare for reconstruction over the next few years.
In the meantime, Vaughn Middle School is currently being reconstructed and is expected to be done before the closure to allow students of Pine to be rezoned and moved to Vaughn.
The new elementary school would then open in 2028.
“The primary benefit of this new facility is multifaceted. It creates learning environments that are more welcoming and more physically conducive to better outcomes, better attention,” Searcy explains.
He says there’s also still an option to reconstruct the school into a pre-k through 8th grade facility. However, due to safety and social concerns from families and staff, that is not planned but it’s still in the air depending on community input during the designing process.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Pine Middle School will be temporarily shutting down for the 2026-27 school year. The decision was made in order to address safety concerns and ensure the well-being of all students and staff members.During this time, efforts will be made to address any necessary repairs and improvements to the school building. Alternative arrangements will be made for students to continue their education during the closure, with details to be provided in the coming weeks.

HONOLULU (Island News) — Cold fronts come to Hawaii during the winter, sometimes giving the state much needed rain, other times stormy weather can bring dangerous downpours.
A day after heavy rain hit Windward Oahu, dumping up to eight inches of rain in 24 hours, streams were still swollen with runoff.
But the latest round of rain only caused minor flooding on roads or low lying areas.
With the latest stormy weather rushing through Hawaii, areas like Windward Oahu are particularly affected by the flash flood caused by the heavy downpour.
“What really matters for flash flooding is how hard it is coming down, and a rainfall rate of two to three or four inches per hour. That brings the water up quickly and the basins can’t handle it so streams, creeks and urban drainage fill up very quickly,” said NWS Science & Operations Officer Robert Ballard.
A video from Waimea Valley on Oahu’s north shore show this effect. Even though there are only light showers at the time, the tranquil trickling falls turn into a gushing geyser as runoff from the mountains came rushing down the stream.
After a night of heavy rain and stormy weather, mud and dirt was seen rushing through Waimea Falls.
“You don’t want to be near creeks and streams. It doesn’t have to be heavy rain where you are to get flash flooding. The water will come down the mountain and come to you. If you hear thunder or see signs of heavy rain you need to take that seriously,” added Ballard.
Three teenagers on Maui learned that lesson the hard way. The water in Iao Valley turned into a raging torrent trapping them on rocks in the middle of the stream.
They had to be airlifted to safety by Maui Fire Department crews.
When the rain came down on Sunday, so did branches, according to Hawaiian Electric. Those branches then got caught up on power lines and knocked out electricity to tens of thousands of residents.
Kapunahala Elementary was closed even after the rain let up because of a power outage and low water pressure at the school.
Another weather event expected later this week, a kona low passing to the north of us, could cause even more problems.
More flash flooding and not just for the usually wetter windward sides, but also leeward areas. It is also expected to produce some damaging wind.
“Once we get into this event we could see wind gusts of 50, 60 mph from southwest winds as they go up and over the islands and then accelerate as they come down in windward areas,” said Ballard.
While you can’t stop the weather, you can be prepared for it.
Along with staying up to date with the latest forecasts, there are things you can do to get ready for the possibility of severe weather striking.
“If you are in an area where you have had power outages and strong wind events before, you should have non-perishable food, batteries and fuel for your generator or whatever you need,” added Ballard.
Residents of Hawaii should brace themselves for severe weather conditions this week, as the heavy rain experienced over the weekend was just a preview of what is to come. The forecast predicts more rain, strong winds, and possibly even thunderstorms in the coming days.It is important for residents to stay informed and prepared for any potential emergencies that may arise due to the severe weather.
