    WWE

WWE is back in primetime this weekend with the latest installment of Saturday Night’s Main Event. After the monster success of the debut episode in December, the promotion hopes to replicate the feat with four matches scheduled to take place in San Antonio as well as an intense contract signing between friends turned rivals.

Saturday Night’s Main Event was revived in December after a 16-year absence from WWE programming. The revival is part of a quarterly deal between WWE and NBC to bring the show to prime time. This weekend’s main event is expected to be Jey Uso challenging “The Ring General” Gunther for the world heavyweight title. Uso’s relatives Jacob Fatu and Nia Jax are also on the card.

The card will also see Bron Breakker look to defend his intercontinental title against Sheamus as the Irishman looks to claim the lone title that has eluded him in his storied career. Plus, Ripley takes on Nia Jax after Jax viciously attacked her on Monday Night Raw earlier in the week.

Look below at the confirmed Saturday Night’s Main Event matches. Saturday Night’s Main Event airs live on NBC and Peacock on Jan. 25 with the main card starting at 8 p.m. ET.

2025 WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event matches

World Heavyweight Championship — Gunther (c) vs. Jey Uso: The build to this world title program is straightforward. Uso challenged Gunther and Gunther accepted. Gunther repeatedly downplayed Uso’s merits as a title challenger, but Uso sent Gunther reeling during a brawl on the Jan. 20 episode of WWE Raw.

Intercontinental Championship — Bron Breakker (c) vs. Sheamus: Sheamus is a surefire WWE Hall of Famer, but there’s one accolade hanging over his head. Sheamus has never won the intercontinental title and has fallen short for years. Breakker suggested it’s time for Sheamus to retire, but “The Celtic Warrior” has no intention to do so before collecting his final prize.

Braun Strowman vs. Jacob Fatu: Strowman crossed paths with The Bloodline soon after returning from injury. Strowman has loosely aligned himself with LA Knight and Sami Zayn to take on The Bloodline. At Saturday Night’s Main Event, behemoths Strowman and Fatu battle.

Women’s World Championship — Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Nia Jax: Jax attacked Ripley at the beginning of Monday Night Raw on Jan. 20. Ripley bounced back later that night and put hands on her rival. A fighting champion, Ripley challenged Jax with Ripley’s title on the line.

Undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens contract signing: While it won’t be a match, there’s sure to be fireworks when the two are in the ring on Saturday night. Shawn Michaels will serve as mediator as the two sign on for their ladder match at the Royal Rumble. Every time these two have seen each other has resulted in some sort of brawl. The key hook to Saturday night is that Micheals is charged with collecting both the undisputed WWE title and the retired Winged Eagle title from both men. Be on the look out for some wildness to close the show.

  • Latter-day Saints announce location of planned Huntsville-area temple

Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, popularly known as Mormons, have announced the location of its planned temple for the Huntsville area.

The Huntsville, Alabama Temple, which will serve Mormons who live in the region, will be built on a site of about 21 acres located at the southeast corner of Gillespie and Browns Ferry Road in Madison, church officials announced. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 30,000 square feet.

LDS President Russell M. Nelson, considered a living prophet for the Salt Lake City-based denomination, announced plans for 17 new temples worldwide during the church’s general conference on Oct. 6, 2024.

When opened, it would be the second Mormon temple in Alabama. The Birmingham area temple opened in Gardendale in 2000.

Nelson has announced 185 new temples, more than half of all the previous temples, since 2018.

“Why are we building temples at such an unprecedented pace? Why? Because the Lord has instructed us to do so,” Nelson said. “The blessings of the temple help to gather Israel on both sides of the veil. These blessings also help to prepare a people who will help prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord.”

Latter-day Saints worship weekly at church buildings called wards, which are local congregations. Stakes are groupings of congregations. Members of those congregations have to travel to a regional temple for certain rituals.

Two beliefs of the Latter-day Saints that are key to the temple rituals are baptism of the dead by proxy and the sealing of married couples and their families for eternity.

The church asserts that baptism of the dead restores an ancient practice cited in 1 Corinthians 15:29, in which the apostle Paul says, “Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?”

The theological emphasis on baptizing ancestors has resulted in the Latter-day Saints collecting probably the most extensive collection of genealogical information in the world, much of it available through its popular Web site, www.familysearch.org.

The Latter-day Saints teach that people in the afterlife still have a chance to make a decision for salvation.

The baptism and other rituals done on behalf of the dead are only good if the person in the spirit world accepts it, according to the faith.re

Helping those dead ancestors find salvation requires a lot of research on the family tree.

It’s considered the responsibility of members to trace their ancestry back as far as they can.

Baptism by proxy is done in a large baptismal pool in the temple; members over the age of 12 don white robes and are dunked once for each ancestor they represent. Baptisms by proxy are done by priests.

Those baptized by proxy then go on to the other rituals – receiving eternal rewards through endowments and being sealed to their spouses and children for all eternity. The sealings are done by a staff of about three to six ordinance workers authorized to perform the rituals.

Before the construction of the temple in Gardendale, Mormons in Alabama performed their rituals at other temples, such as the one in Atlanta. Having a second temple will rank as a monumental achievement signifying growth for Latter-day Saints in Alabama.

When the temple in Gardendale was dedicated, President and Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley visited and presided. Hinckley died in 2008. Alabama now has more than 40,000 LDS members in about 75 congregations.

Much of the growth is driven by missionaries who go door-to-door, sharing their faith.

Latter-day Saints believe that the angel Moroni directed founding prophet Joseph Smith to buried gold plates that contained the Book of Mormon in 1823. He published the Book of Mormon in 1830 and founded the church. Smith’s writings are the distinctive theological foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the location of its planned temple in the Huntsville area. The temple will be located on a 16-acre site at the intersection of Pulaski Pike and Oakwood Road.

This announcement comes after years of planning and consideration by church leaders. The temple will serve as a sacred place of worship for Latter-day Saints in the Huntsville area and surrounding communities.

The Huntsville temple will be the first in the state of Alabama, and will provide a place for members to participate in sacred ordinances such as marriages, baptisms, and other ceremonies that are central to their faith.

Construction on the temple is expected to begin in the coming months, with an estimated completion date in the next few years. The temple will be a beautiful addition to the Huntsville community, and will serve as a symbol of the faith and dedication of Latter-day Saints in the area.

We are excited for this new chapter in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Huntsville, and look forward to the blessings that this temple will bring to our community.

  • Variance for new Fidelity location in former Barnes & Noble store headed to Naperville commission – Chicago Tribune

Fidelity Investments needs city permission before it can open part of its new location on the ground level of the former Barnes & Noble store in downtown Naperville.

The company’s request for a code variance for the 47 E. Chicago Ave. site goes before the Naperville Planning and Zoning Commission Wednesday night.

City code requires that the first floor of buildings in Naperville’s downtown district be limited to commercial purposes. Because Fidelity is a financial institution, it needs city permission to proceed with its plans.

Once commissioners offer their recommendation on the request, the issue goes to the Naperville City Council for a final vote. The soonest the matter could appear on a council agenda would be Feb. 4 or Feb. 18, according to Adam Beaver, a community planner for the city.

If approved, Fidelity would be moving from its existing location in the Naperville Investment Center at 1823 Freedom Drive. Its plan is to fill out the former Barnes & Noble building with both retail and office space, with the former taking 2,437 square feet of ground-floor space and offices filling second-floor space, according to a staff report prepared for Wednesday’s meeting.

“As a member of the Naperville business community for nearly two decades, we look forward to continuing to serve our local customers with an expanded space, meeting their growing demand for in-person service, as well as welcoming new customers working towards their financial goals,” a Fidelity spokesperson said in an emailed statement Tuesday.

Per project plans communicated to the city, the retail space would be designed to attract and serve walk-in customers in addition to providing an entrance to second-floor offices. On the first floor, people could work be able to make deposits, conduct account transactions and complete account-related documentation.

Though Fidelity is proposing the ground-level portion of plans to be retail-focused, the company itself is still a financial institution and requires a variance for its first-floor proposal, Beaver said. Due to the walk-in and retail services proposed, staff say they support the company’s request.

Six community members have voiced their opposition to the Fidelity plans in letters submitted prior to the meeting. The city also received one letter of support.

“Approving Fidelity’s appeal for a variance to this zoning code would be a missed opportunity to maximize the potential of this important space,” one opponent said.

“There (are) so many other places a bank can occupy that (are) not in the heart of our beautiful downtown. It’s bad enough the area (has) been under construction for so long,” another said.

Barnes & Noble closed its longtime downtown store in January 2024 when its lease expired. It plans to reopen this spring in the former Pottery Barn location at 9 W. Jackson Ave.

A few months later after the closure, real estate broker Nathan Tonnies — representing 47 E. Chicago Ave’s San Diego-based property landlord LLJ Venture — confirmed that both Fidelity and Wells Fargo had signed long-term corporate leases for different portions of the building.

While Fidelity seeks variance approval, Wells Fargo is going through permitting process, according to Allison Laff, deputy director of Naperville’s Transportation, Engineering and Development department.

Its first permit request was sumbitted Dec. 11 but rejected, Laff said. The city is awaiting the resubmission of technical drawings, she said.

The game was notable because of a power outage in the stadium in the third quarter, with the Ravens leading 28–6 and leading to a 30-minute delay in the game. San Francisco rallied in the fourth quarter but fell short, losing 34-31, giving Baltimore its second Super Bowl championship.

  • Is UFC 311 still taking place in LA this weekend? ‘No chance’ of location change as Dana White gives new update amid wildfires

UFC 311 will take place in Los Angeles this evening despite the ongoing wildfire crisis spreading across the city.

The first major event of the 2025 UFC calendar was thought to potentially have to move location due to the devastating scenes.

LA has been devastated by wildfire over the last few days

A gigantic wildfire has spread through LA and in just a few days, more than 10,000 structures had been impacted, with at least 25 people losing their lives.

Sport then took a backseat, with the risk being too high to play any fixtures in the affected areas as the fire continued to spread.

In the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers called off their games while in the NFL, the LA Rams moved stadium to play.

That left many question marks over the venue for UFC 311 which has been planned to go ahead at the Intuit Dome…

Is UFC 311 still taking place in LA?

UFC 311 is still going ahead in Los Angeles.

That is according to president Dana White who gave a new update on the situation on Wednesday afternoon.

“No, there’s no chance we move,” White told The Jim Rome Show on after being asked about a location switch.

“We’ll be there on Saturday. 100%

“I think this event is definitely going to be a boost for the people who live there [in Los Angeles].”

Those comments came after he remained wary of the event moving if the fires in LA got worse.

White has given a new update on the situation

    2

White has given a new update on the situationCredit: AFP

Speaking on a stream with social media star Adin Ross on Sunday, White said: “Well, if the fire gets bad, we are coming to Vegas.

“Yeah, we’ll move it to Vegas. If it gets too bad. But as of now? It’s all go. The NBA is gonna go this week. We are gonna go.”

The LA Clippers beat the Miami Heat 109-98 in an NBA match at the Intuit Dome on Tuesday.

The LA Lakers also played at the Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday, losing 126-102 to the San Antonio Spurs.

As well as the comments from the UFC boss, the California State Athletic Commission has also spoken about the situation.

They said: “We are watching the ongoing wildfires and the subsequent emergency and disaster response in the Los Angeles area.

‘It’s gone forever’ – LA soccer star Ali Riley crushed by devastating impact of wildfires

“Our hearts are with the residents of the region, and we appreciate the efforts of first responders in keeping the community safe.

“At this time, no decisions have been made about moving UFC 311, but we will continue to work with state and local officials and the UFC to determine the best course of action.”

Since then, nothing has changed, so UFC 311 is taking place in Los Angeles.

The BBC have reported that the winds that have fanned the wildfires are ‘expected to kick up’ this week.

Forecasters have again cautioned ‘extreme fire danger’ in the north-west of the city centre with the Intuit Dome located around 20 miles south of the Palisades fire which is still burning.

Should it go ahead as planned, UFC 311 will get started at 11pm UK time before the preliminary fights start at 1am on Sunday morning.

The main card, which included two title fights, ae expected to get going at around 3am on Sunday UK time.

Islam Makhachev will defend his UFC lightweight title against Renato Moicano while Merab Dvalishvili aims to keep his bantamweight belt against Umar Nurmagomedov.

As wildfires continue to ravage parts of California, many fans are wondering if UFC 311 will still be taking place in Los Angeles this weekend. The good news is that there is “no chance” of a location change, according to UFC President Dana White.

Despite the wildfires causing devastation in the region, White has assured fans that the event will go ahead as planned. The safety of fighters, staff, and fans is always a top priority for the UFC, and White has stated that they are monitoring the situation closely.

So for all you fight fans out there, rest assured that UFC 311 will still be taking place in LA this weekend. Get ready for some epic battles in the octagon!
