Takeaway: After Kleber’s injury, Gafford lone remaining healthy center
While all the centers around him unfortunately have been falling like dominoes this season, Daniel Gafford has been that one stabilizing
force in the middle for the Dallas Mavericks.
Not only has Gafford (along with guard Spencer Dinwiddie) played in a team-high 44 of the Mavs’ 46 games this season. But Gafford also is averaging a career-best 12.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks, and ranks fourth in the NBA in field goal shooting at a gaudy 69.9 percent.
Overall, it’s the best season of Gafford’s six-year career.
“Honestly, I’m really just motivated right now,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of things that’s going through my head when it comes to the team, and a lot of guys are encouraging me to just keep my head about it.
“I don’t worry about mistakes. I don’t worry about the play before or anything like that. I just have a next-play mentality, and I try to be able to do my job at an elite level and make sure I talk on defense, block shots (and) grab rebounds. Do everything that I was brought here to do at an elite level every night.”
Gafford certainly played at an elite level during Saturday’s 122-107 loss to the Boston Celtics when he poured in 19 points, collected a game-high 15 rebounds (eight offensive) and blocked a game-high three shots in 33 minutes. He also has a flair for flexing his muscles and energizing the
crowd, especially when he powers home a slam dunk with authority, as was often the case against the Celtics.
“I just feel like it gives us that extra push,” Gafford said. “If we don’t have enough energy, my energy is going to be able to just push guys. The dunks, the blocked shots, the screaming, that creates momentum for us.
“And throughout the course of the game, that helps us a lot because now we’re not worried about mistakes that we made beforehand. I’m just having fun.”
The fun for Gafford and the Mavs ceased with less than five minutes left in the third quarter when backup center Maxi Kleber fractured his right foot. With centers Dereck Lively II (right ankle stress fracture) and Dwight Powell (right hip strain) already sidelined, Kleber’s injury meant Gafford is the lone healthy center on the roster.
What’s more, Gafford has played 30 or more minutes in four of the past six games since Lively was injured Jan. 14 against Denver. Before that, Gafford had played at least 30 minutes in a game only once this season, Nov. 10 at Denver while Lively sat out with a shoulder injury.
Gafford usually has a tag-team job with Lively at center. But that’s not the case anymore with the injury.
“His minutes have definitely gone up,” coach Jason Kidd said, referring to Gafford. “We’re
stretching him. We’re running out of centers.
“It’s a heavy load for him to carry, but he’s one that has to pick up some more minutes here. He can score and rebound as well (and) he’s doing that for us, playing at a high level. But we’re going to have to lean on him, because he’s one of the last of the centers standing.”
As his minutes increase, Gafford doesn’t feel pressured to step up all areas of his game. However, he knows the Mavs are depending on him to hold down the fort in the middle on both ends of the court until the cavalry gets healthy.
And as he has the back of his injured teammates, Gafford tried to put this season in its proper perspective.
“It’s a lot of ups and downs in a season and we get flustered in certain situations, so I had kind of gotten in the mix of a lot of that,” he said. “So, I just took a step back, re-assessed a lot of stuff and just took a deep breath and was like, ‘It’s going to be OK,’ because one bad game does not make a season.
“A couple of bad games don’t make a season. At the end of the day, we’ve got another game after that bad game or after that good game. We just got to keep up.”
Here are the three takeaways from the Mavs’ 15-point loss to the Celtics.
IRVING HAS SOLID GAME: While playing a game-high 42 minutes against his former team, Mavs guard Kyrie Irving scored a team-high 22 points, grabbed four rebounds, distributed five assists and blocked a shot on Saturday. Irving has had to take on a bigger role – especially when it comes to initiating the offense — since Luka Dončić has been sidelined after suffering a left calf strain in the Dec. 25 game against Minnesota.
CELTICS A REBOUNDING MACHINE: The Celtics held a slim 51-49 edge over the Mavs in the rebounding department during Saturday’s game. That includes a 17-13 advantage in offensive rebounds. Six members of the Celtics grabbed at least five rebounds: reserves Luke Kornet (nine), Payton Pritchard (nine) and Al Horford (six), and starters Jaylen Brown (eight), Jayson Tatum (six) and Derrick White (five). Horford also had four offensive rebounds, while White, Pritchard and Kornet each had three.
RAINING THREES FOR BOSTON: Boston ended up doing what it does best. And that’s shoot three-pointers. The Celtics jacked up a lot of them (52) on Saturday and a lot of them (20) found their way through the basket. Boston converted just 2-of-10 three-pointers in the first quarter, then added 7-of-15 shots from downtown in the second quarter. That trend continued when the Celtics nailed 8-of-18 triples in the third quarter and wound up making 3-of-9 three-pointers in the fourth quarter.

The injury bug has struck the Dallas Mavericks once again, as center Maxi Kleber has been ruled out indefinitely with a lower back injury. This leaves Daniel Gafford as the lone remaining healthy center on the team’s roster.Gafford, who was acquired in a trade with the Washington Wizards earlier this season, has shown flashes of potential in limited minutes. However, with Kleber sidelined, he will now be thrust into a much larger role and will need to step up his game to help fill the void left by the injured big man.
The Mavericks will need Gafford to provide solid defense and rebounding in the absence of Kleber, as they look to maintain their position in the Western Conference playoff race. It will be interesting to see how Gafford handles the increased responsibility and whether he can rise to the occasion in this challenging situation.
As the Mavericks navigate through this injury setback, fans will be watching closely to see how Gafford performs as the team’s primary center. Only time will tell if he is up to the task, but one thing is for certain – the spotlight is now on him to deliver for the team in Kleber’s absence.

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ Showrunner Teases Paul Strickland Finale Arc: ‘We Went Out Swinging’
While we’re not sure who will survive in “apocalyptic” series finale of “9-1-1: Lone Star,” which will follows as an asteroid hurtles towards Austin, Texas, the two-episode arc for Brian Michael Smith’s trans character Paul Strickland will fulfill a promise made all the way back in the pilot for the Fox spinoff series.
Ahead of the two-part finale, which begins Monday, Jan. 27, showrunner Rashad Raisani told TheWrap how the show comes full circle from the conversation Owen Strand (Rob Lowe) had in the very first episode when he recruited Paul to Station 126: That a fellow trans person could see him as a role model.
Watch an exclusive clip from the episode below:
“Brian Smith, who’s a trans man, his character is obviously fundamental to the show. He came to me and said, ‘Hey, if you look at the pilot of ‘Lone Star,’ Rob Lowe, has a line where he’s trying to recruit Paul to come to Texas. He says, ‘Somewhere there is a kid out there in this town, just like you, who feels like they don’t matter and they’re not seen and one day you might come across them.’ And Brian said, ‘Could we do that as a story before the show is over?’”
Raisani teased how that story plays out in the concluding episodes. “Paul runs into a kid who knows Paul’s transness, and the fact that Paul lives with pride and dignity and courage would have a huge impact on this young person and teach them about feeling that they’re enough and that they can accept themselves.”

He added that he wanted to do Paul’s character justice before the show wraps: “I’m not trans, but Brian is somebody I care about. So when he tells me, ‘This is my lived experience…’ it just feels like I’m telling a story with Brian. We’re just trying to tell a human story. I hope and wish that people could see it that way, that it’s about human beings and telling stories of shared humanity.”
As anti-trans messaging becomes more prevalent in politics, Raisani told TheWrap, “I feel like we went down swinging” in showing the character’s positive impact on the community.
“9-1-1: Lone Star” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

Lone Democrat Votes for GOP-Backed Abortion Bill
Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas was the only House Democrat who joined Republicans to pass the Born-Alive Act on Thursday.
Newsweek reached out to Cuellar’s office for comment via email.
Why It Matters
The Born-Alive Act is the latest battle in the decades-long fight over abortion rights, a crucial political issue for millions of voters across the country. Supporters of abortion rights have raised concerns about access to abortion under the second Trump administration, though he has said he doesn’t support a national ban.
Abortion became particularly salient for Democrats after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that guaranteed abortion rights, in 2022—and a flurry of GOP-controlled states quickly moved to ban the procedure. Despite a wave of abortion-fueled backlash at the polls later that year, Republicans managed to stage a comeback in 2024.
Now, Republicans are tasked with striking a balance between appeasing their base without alienating moderates who backed President Donald Trump and other conservatives in last year’s election to avoid similar backlash in upcoming midterms. Democrats like Cuellar, from swing districts, are similarly walking a fine line on the issue.

What to Know
The Born-Alive Act, if passed, would require health care providers to provide the same level of medical attention to infants born alive during or after an attempted abortion as they would to any other newborn.
Critics of the legislation, however, say it is not necessary because doctors are already required to do that, arguing the bill is simply an attempt to further chill abortion rights.
All present Republicans, along with Cuellar, voted in support of the bill. Representative Vicente Gonzalez, another Texas Democrat, voted “present.” All other Democrats voted against it.
Cuellar and Gonzalez both represent South Texas districts that are former Democratic strongholds that have zoomed to the right in recent years, backing Trump in 2024.
Both have been moderates and have sparred with more progressive colleagues over some cultural issues, but have long maintained their districts had a socially moderate streak. They both voted in favor of a bill that would prohibit transgender girls and women from playing in girls and womens’ sports.
What People Are Saying
Representative Pramila Jayapal, a Washington Democrat, in a statement: “The so-called Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would do nothing other than create a situation where doctors cannot properly care for high-risk patients.”
Representative Tom Cole, an Oklahoma Republican, in a statement: “This legislation is simple: if a baby is born alive following an attempted abortion, then it is required that the infant be provided the same standard of medical care as any other newborn. Put plainly, it is just common sense and basic human decency.”
Representative Ann Wagner, a Missouri Republican, in a statement: “I am so grateful the House passed my vital legislation to ensure babies who survive an abortion are afforded lifesaving medical care. Innocent children deserve the opportunity to live and thrive – period. It’s up to us to be the voice for these babies who are at their most vulnerable and ensure they get the love and care they need.”
Senator John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, on X: “I’ve always stood on the side of Roe and a woman’s right to make her own health care choices. It’s absurd to mandate criminalization because of those choices. Any bill that does so, including the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act, is a NO from me.”
What Happens Next
The bill was already blocked by the Senate, where any progress is dim due to the filibuster, which would require 60 Democrats to vote to advance it; no Senate Democrats have signaled support for the bill.
In a surprising turn of events, a lone Democrat has broken ranks and voted in favor of a controversial GOP-backed abortion bill. The bill, which seeks to impose strict restrictions on access to abortion services, has sparked heated debate and division among lawmakers. The Democrat, who has not been named, cited personal beliefs and constituents’ views as reasons for their vote. This move has caused uproar within the Democratic party, with many members expressing disappointment and betrayal.
The GOP, on the other hand, has welcomed the unexpected support and hailed it as a victory for their cause. They see this as a sign of growing bipartisan support for their anti-abortion agenda.
The fallout from this vote is sure to reverberate in the days and weeks to come, as both parties grapple with the implications of this unexpected turn of events. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Texas governor touts Operation Lone Star success
AUSTIN, Texas — Law enforcement agencies across Texas have seized more than 622 million lethal doses of fentanyl – enough to kill every man, woman, and child in the United States, Mexico and Canada combined, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s office said Friday.
Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas National Guard continue to work together to secure the border; stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons and people into Texas; and prevent, detect and interdict transnational criminal activity between ports of entry, the release said.
Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to more than 530,600 undocumented migrant apprehensions and more than 50,000 criminal arrests, with more than 43,000 felony charges.Texas has decreased illegal crossings into the state by 87% because of its historic border security mission, Abbott’s office said.
“Fewer illegal crossings into Texas means fewer migrants to transport to sanctuary cities.”
Since the start of Texas’ transportation program, the state has transported:
Texas Governor Greg Abbott is celebrating the success of Operation Lone Star, a state-led mission to secure the border and combat illegal immigration. Since its launch in March, Operation Lone Star has resulted in over 1,500 criminal arrests, the seizure of more than 70 firearms, and the apprehension of thousands of pounds of drugs.Governor Abbott praised the efforts of law enforcement officers and National Guard troops who have been working tirelessly to protect Texas communities from the dangers posed by illegal immigration. He also emphasized the importance of securing the border to prevent human trafficking, drug smuggling, and other criminal activities.
Operation Lone Star has been instrumental in reducing crime and enhancing public safety in Texas. Governor Abbott’s commitment to border security has been unwavering, and he continues to advocate for stricter immigration policies to protect the state’s residents.
As the operation continues to make progress, Governor Abbott remains dedicated to ensuring that Texas remains a safe and secure place for all its residents. Operation Lone Star is a testament to the governor’s strong leadership and his commitment to upholding the rule of law.

OTTAWA, Ontario — Eriks Mateiko scored the lone goal of a shootout in the eighth round to give Latvia a 3-2 victory over Canada on Friday night in the world junior hockey championship.
Mateiko beat Jack Ivankovic to the blocker side to end the tiebreaker after the first 15 shooters failed to score.
“We found a way,” coach Artis Abols said after Latvia’s third victory in 38 games in the tournament. “In one hockey game, everything is possible.”
Mateiko and Peteris Bulans scored late power-play goals in the Group A game at Canadian Tire Centre. Mateiko tied it at 1 with 6:42 left and Bulans evened it at 2 with 2:29 to go.
“They battled,” Canadian coach Dave Cameron. “Credit to them.”
Linards Feldbergs stopped 55 shots for Latvia in its tournament opener.
“Crazy,” Feldbergs said. “Can’t believe what we did. I’m still in shock.”
Calum Ritchie and Jett Luchanko scored for Canada. Ivankovic made 24 saves.
Canada took a penalty for too many men on the ice in 3-on-3 overtime, but survived that short-handed situation to force the shootout.
“Devastating,” Canadian defenseman Tanner Molendyk said. “An eye-opener. It’s not one you want to lose, not one you see yourself losing.”
Ivankovic became the third 17-year-old goaltender to play for Canada at the under-20 tournament, and the first to start a game since Jimmy Waite in 1987.
In the other group A game, Finland beat Germany 3-1. Emil Pieniniemi, Arttu Alasiurua and Jesse Kiiskinen scored and Petteri Rimpinen made 31 saves to help Finland rebound from an opening 4-0 loss to Canada on Thursday night.
