  • Manchester City targeting Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez as Monday transfer deadline looms

Manchester City are working to complete the signing of Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez before Monday’s transfer deadline with a view to boosting Pep Guardiola’s faltering midfield. The English champions are yet to reach a breakthrough with Porto in talks that began on Sunday and there is no guarantee that they will be able to secure an agreement before the window closes at 6 p.m. ET.

Gonzalez has a release clause in his contract understood to be worth $61.5 million and City would have the option to simply activate that if they cannot find a breakthrough in talks with Porto. That would require them to pay the lump sum in one go, something which would be within their means but would constitute a serious commitment. Historically City are not a club willing to overpay to add to their squad.

Equally, City’s midfield evidently needs strengthening after Sunday’s 5-1 demolition at the hands of Arsenal. Gonzalez is a strong, dynamic presence in the center of the park, his five goals and three assists suggesting a player who can make a big contribution in the penalty area as well.

Complicating matters for Porto is the presence of a sell on clause to Barcelona, through whose academy Gonzalez developed before making his senior debut. It is believed that the Portuguese side would be obliged to hand 40 percent of any sale fee to Barcelona, heightening the pressure for them to receive as big a fee as possible.

Amid onfield struggles, City have been notably active in January, adding three players to Guardiola’s squad already for a combined $150 million. Defenders Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Juma Bah have already arrived, the latter joining Lens on loan. Forward Omar Marmoush was also signed from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Manchester City are reportedly eyeing up Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez as the Monday transfer deadline approaches. The Premier League champions are said to be keen on adding the Argentine youngster to their squad before the window closes.

Gonzalez, who is just 19 years old, has been impressing at Porto with his performances in midfield. City see him as a potential long-term prospect who could develop into a key player for the club in the future.

With just days left before the transfer deadline, City are said to be working hard to secure a deal for Gonzalez. The midfielder is believed to be open to a move to the Etihad Stadium and could provide valuable depth in City’s midfield ranks.

It remains to be seen whether City will be able to complete a deal for Gonzalez before Monday’s deadline, but fans will be hoping that they can get the deal over the line in time. Stay tuned for further updates as the transfer deadline looms.

  • Sterling fails to shine as Arsenal’s Champions League draw looms

Sterling fails to shine as Arsenal’s Champions League draw looms

Here’s Ian Mills with his latest Three Things We Learned after Arsenal’s Champions League  win at Girona

We secured a top three finish in the Champions League ‘League’ phase with a win in Spain in our final game of the opening eight fixtures.

Here is Ian Mills’ latest Three Things We Learned series piece below:-

1 – Nwaneri keeps on getting better –

A first Champions League start and a first goal for our wonderfully gifted Hale End graduate with the man of the match award to boot.

He has now scored in every competition he has played in this campaign and took his overall goalscoring tally to six so far with a great strike which was bent into the bottom corner for what tuned out to the winner in this entertaining clash.

He has taken to the right-wing position with aplomb and already offers a genuine goal threat in every game he plays.

At 17 he is clearly only going to get better and what a great time all us Gooners are going to have watching him blossom into a major first team star.

2 – Impressive Champions League form offers a chance of silverware –

Whilst finishing in third place in the League format was great to see, our record from eight games was really good, with six wins, a draw and a single defeat.

We conceded only three times and kept five clean sheets in total. While some of our fixtures were not overly entertaining (a fair summation of quite a lot of games in this new format) our strong defence helped to see us over the line and is the foundation upon which our Champions League hopes are built this season.

3 – Loan players fail to shine once more –

When we were awarded our second penalty of the evening, I assumed that either Martin Odegaard or Kai Havertz would take the spot kick.

You would have got long odds on Raheem Sterling being most Gooners first choice, and I was not at all confident he would score.

As it turned out, it was a reasonable save (albeit a good height for the Girona goalkeeper) and the taker looked crestfallen.

Whatever his confidence levels before the penalty, they are certain to have nosedived further still.

While Sterling was struggling in attack, Neto was having a debut to forget in goal. Having been caught out way off his line for Girona’s goal he then inexplicably tried to save it while out of his area.

I accept he has warmed our bench all season so far which is never an easy thing to do, however it is to be hoped that the injury that kept David Raya of the matchday squad is not too serious and that he can return for the crucial with Manchester City at the weekend.

The bid for Ollie Watkins shows that the club have money to spend on them right type of forward – let’s hope can either sign him or someone else to help us score the goals we are going to need for the remainder of the season ahead.

As the UEFA Champions League draw approaches, all eyes are on Arsenal and their star player Raheem Sterling. However, Sterling has failed to shine in recent matches, leaving fans concerned about the team’s chances in the upcoming tournament.

Despite his impressive performances in the past, Sterling has struggled to find his form this season. His lackluster performances have been a cause for worry among Arsenal supporters, who were hoping for a standout player to lead the team to victory in the Champions League.

With the draw looming, Arsenal’s hopes for a successful campaign rest on Sterling’s ability to rediscover his best form. The team will need him at his best if they are to compete with the top clubs in Europe and make a deep run in the competition.

As the pressure mounts, all eyes will be on Sterling to deliver when it matters most. Only time will tell if he can rise to the occasion and help Arsenal achieve their Champions League dreams.

  • A state of ‘purgatory’: John Collins reacts to latest trade rumors as deadline looms

SALT LAKE CITY — John Collins tries to avoid the NBA news at this time of year.

At this point, how could he not? It’s become an annual tradition to see his name floating around the trade market; a rite of passage that the NBA season is entering the second half of the season.

So while he’s heard whispers and rumors over the last few weeks, he hadn’t yet heard the latest report: He was apparently pretty close to being a Sacramento King.

According to Kings beat reporter James Han, things were so close that the Kings had actually told players they were on the move but didn’t ultimately pull the trigger.

“I definitely didn’t hear that,” Collins said. “Whatever Sacramento is doing there, that’s their prerogative, if it involves me or not. Obviously, I would have found out, but I’m kind of happy I just didn’t have that news. Nothing against Sacramento, just kind of happy I didn’t have that news in my phone. So, you know, just got to continue to be the best professional I can be and continue playing basketball.”

Collins is having a standout year in his second season with the Jazz, averaging 18.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and shooting 44.6% from 3-point range. He’s also passing at a much higher rate and has been used as a creator against mismatches to pretty good success.

Those are all things that should pique the interest of teams with the trade deadline looming next Thursday. The Kings and Warriors have both been heavily mentioned in talks — and a team like the Lakers, Nuggets or Spurs could make some sense, too.

So what does he think of moving to a team further up the standings?

On one hand, such a move would offer a better chance to compete in the playoffs. On the other, it’s still an unknown situation. And that comfort is important to Collins — as evidenced by his play this season after an inconsistent first year with the Jazz.

“This is not an easy thing mentally to think about whether it might be a better situation or worse situation, or whatever situation is out there — it’s not my current one,” he said. “So it’s hard for me to think about that and focus. So I just try not to think about it. Just try to be the best pro I can. Because I really have no control over when or where that is to. Whenever that would happen, I have to restart again.”

Though, there are times he lets the NBA fan in him come out — feeling the excitement of the trade season.

“In a weird way, sometimes it’s fun,” he said. “Sometimes I feel like a kid.”

But reality usually sets in shortly after.

“It just puts you in a little bit of a purgatory — you’re just in a little bit of a mundane (state) and don’t know how to feel,” he said.

But that’s been his basketball life over the last few years.

“It’s been a part of my career and something I’ve had to deal with,” Collins said. “So it just is what it is. And again, I will continue to be the best pro I can be while I’m here. whatever happens to happen. Again, I have no control.”

As the NBA trade deadline approaches, Philadelphia 76ers forward John Collins finds himself in a state of uncertainty. Rumors have been swirling about potential trades involving Collins, leaving him in what he describes as a state of ‘purgatory’.

In a recent interview, Collins expressed his frustration with the ongoing trade speculation, stating that it has been a distraction for him and his teammates. He emphasized his desire to stay with the 76ers and continue to contribute to the team’s success.

Collins acknowledged that trade rumors are a part of the business of professional sports, but he admitted that it has been difficult to focus on his game with all the uncertainty surrounding his future. Despite the challenges, Collins remains committed to giving his best effort on the court and helping the 76ers compete at the highest level.

As the trade deadline looms, Collins is hopeful that a resolution will come soon, whether it involves him staying with the 76ers or moving on to a new team. In the meantime, he is doing his best to stay focused and prepare for whatever comes next in his NBA career.

  • Pete Carroll draws surprise 49ers interest as Raiders decision looms

Would Pete Carroll be desperate enough for a return to the NFL to settle for a defensive coordinator job?

It’s a thought that has at least crossed the mind of one of the Super Bowl-winning ex-Seahawks coach’s rivals, as Carroll’s name “has come up inside 49ers HQ as an interesting idea,” The San Francisco Standard reported Wednesday.

The 49ers, with head coach Kyle Shanahan entering his ninth season, want to bring fired Jets coach Robert Saleh back into his old job, but Saleh is squarely in the mix for the Jaguars head coaching job after Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen bowed out of the race — which preceded Jacksonville’s firing of general manager Trent Baalke.

Carroll, however, is now the Raiders’ top option for their head coaching vacancy, according to The Athletic, after they missed out on Ben Johnson, the Lions offensive coordinator who just took the Bears head coaching job — a position Carroll interviewed for.

The 73-year-old stepped down as Seahawks head coach following the 2023 season after 14 years, which included 10 playoff appearances and a 137-89-1 record.

The last time he was a defensive coordinator was with none other than the 49ers in 1995 and ’96 after his lone season as the Jets head coach in ’94.

Carroll left San Francisco to follow Bill Parcells as the Patriots’ head coach but was fired after three seasons.

He’d go on to become the third coach ever to win both a college national championship and a Super Bowl, leading USC to a title in 2004 and the Seahawks to a Super Bowl win 11 years ago.

On Wednesday, the Raiders hired John Spytek as their new general manager, someone with ties to Las Vegas minority owner Tom Brady as they worked together with the Buccaneers, where Spytek was assistant general manager.

It’s unclear whether Spytek will have a major influence on the coaching hire, or if Brady and majority owner Mark Davis will be making the call.

The NFL coaching carousel is in full swing, and one unexpected name has emerged as a potential candidate for the San Francisco 49ers: Pete Carroll. The longtime Seattle Seahawks head coach has drawn interest from the division rival 49ers as they continue their search for a new head coach.

Carroll, who led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory in 2013, has a reputation for being a player-friendly coach and a strong defensive mind. His success in Seattle has made him one of the most respected coaches in the league, and his experience could be a valuable asset for a team like the 49ers.

Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders are also in the market for a new head coach after parting ways with Jon Gruden earlier this season. The Raiders are expected to make a decision soon, and Carroll could be a candidate for that job as well.

As Carroll’s future in Seattle remains uncertain, it will be interesting to see where he ends up next. Whether it’s with the 49ers, the Raiders, or another team altogether, Carroll’s name is sure to be one to watch in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Zach Martini in stride as Penn State looms

On Thursday afternoon, just a few hours before Rutgers basketball took the court at Nebraska, Zach Martini’s phone started blowing up with bad news.

Filmmaker David Lynch, who was the subject of Martini’s senior thesis at Princeton University last year, had died.

“One of my inspirations in life,” Martini said of Lynch, whose movies “Twin Peaks” and “Mulholland Drive” are surrealist classics. “My thesis was 80 pages about him. I was listening to the music in his movies before the game.”

Sufficiently motivated, Martini turned in his best performance since arriving at Rutgers, scoring 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting as the Scarlet Knights upset Nebraska on the road.

It seems like a Hollywood turn of events, but the truth behind Martini’s emergence, as Rutgers takes a two-game winning streak to a crucial showdown at Penn State Monday (6:30 p.m., Peacock), is more straightforward.

“I know I have less than two months of college basketball left,” he said. “I’m going to go down fighting.”

As the Penn State Nittany Lions prepare to face off against the Ohio State Buckeyes this weekend, all eyes are on star quarterback Zach Martini. Martini has been in top form this season, leading his team to an impressive record and solidifying his place as one of the top players in the nation.

Martini has been a force to be reckoned with on the field, using his speed, agility, and football IQ to outsmart and outmaneuver his opponents. His ability to make split-second decisions under pressure has earned him the respect of fans, teammates, and opponents alike.

As the game against Penn State looms, Martini shows no signs of slowing down. He is focused, determined, and ready to lead his team to victory. With his strong arm and quick feet, Martini is sure to give the Nittany Lions a run for their money.

Penn State better be ready, because Zach Martini is in stride and ready to take on whatever challenges come his way. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an electrifying game this weekend. #GoBuckeyes #ZachMartini #PennStateLooms

  • Bernstein sees upside in Robinhood stock as crypto business expansion looms By Investing.com

On Tuesday, Bernstein analysts reaffirmed their positive stance on Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:), maintaining an Outperform rating and a $51.00 price target. The brokerage firm views the stock as the “Best Idea for 2025” within its Global Digital Assets coverage. Currently trading at $42.10 with a market cap of $37.1 billion, Robinhood’s shares have witnessed a significant surge, delivering an impressive 259% return over the past year.

Analysts believe that the momentum is likely to continue through 2025, driven by robust revenue growth of 36% and rising profitability.According to InvestingPro analysis, Robinhood maintains a “Good” financial health score, with particularly strong momentum metrics. InvestingPro subscribers have access to 12 additional investment tips and comprehensive financial analysis for HOOD.

Robinhood has taken a cautious approach in its cryptocurrency offerings, listing approximately 20 tokens. This conservative strategy is attributed to the stringent stance of the current SEC team regarding the classification of tokens as securities. This approach contrasts with its competitors, such as Coinbase (NASDAQ:), which lists over 250 tokens.

Analysts anticipate that the regulatory environment will become more favorable for cryptocurrencies under a Trump administration, leading to clearer rules for digital asset classification. This shift could enable Robinhood to expand its token listings and increase its market share in spot crypto trading, potentially building on its strong gross profit margin of 86%.

The company recently reached a settlement with the SEC, agreeing to pay $45 million to resolve regulatory issues that originated in 2018. The settlement amount was fully accrued in the previous year, 2023. Bernstein’s analysts remain optimistic about Robinhood’s prospects, citing the settlement as a resolution to past regulatory challenges and a potential catalyst for future growth.

The positive outlook for Robinhood is further supported by expectations of a pro-crypto stance from the SEC, which could provide a more conducive environment for the company’s crypto business expansion. With the anticipation of a more favorable regulatory landscape and the company’s strong performance in the previous year, Robinhood is positioned to potentially capture a larger share of the crypto trading market. Analyst targets range from $29 to $60, with a consensus recommendation leaning toward Buy.

The $51 price target reflects confidence in Robinhood’s ability to leverage these opportunities and continue its upward trajectory in profitability and market presence.Get deeper insights into Robinhood’s valuation and growth prospects with a comprehensive Pro Research Report, exclusively available on InvestingPro, along with advanced financial metrics and expert analysis.

In other recent news, Robinhood has settled charges by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), agreeing to pay $45 million in civil penalties.

The settlement addresses allegations of multiple regulatory violations in Robinhood’s brokerage operations, including inaccuracies in reporting trading activity and insufficient measures to safeguard customer information. In further developments, Robinhood’s stock has been upgraded by JPMorgan analysts from Underweight to Neutral. This follows the company’s successful diversification of its operations and strong financial performance, with revenue growing 35.7% and earnings per share of $0.60 over the last twelve months.

Robinhood has also introduced several new products aimed at attracting more engaged and active users. Despite this, the company’s average account size remains smaller compared to its peers, leading to questions about its long-term profitability potential. Other firms such as Piper Sandler and Goldman Sachs have maintained positive ratings on Robinhood, citing strong trading volumes and revenue growth.

Bernstein sees upside in Robinhood stock as crypto business expansion looms

Investment firm Bernstein is bullish on Robinhood’s stock, predicting potential upside as the company expands its crypto business. With a growing interest in cryptocurrency trading, Robinhood has been making moves to capitalize on this trend.

The popular trading app has recently added new cryptocurrencies to its platform, offering users more options to trade and invest in digital assets. This expansion into the crypto market has caught the attention of analysts like Bernstein, who see it as a promising opportunity for Robinhood to attract more users and drive revenue growth.

In a recent report, Bernstein highlighted the potential for Robinhood’s stock to see upside as the company continues to expand its crypto business. With the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies and the increasing demand for trading platforms that offer access to digital assets, Robinhood is well-positioned to benefit from this trend.

Investors who are looking to capitalize on the growing interest in cryptocurrency trading may want to consider adding Robinhood stock to their portfolio. With Bernstein’s positive outlook on the company’s future growth prospects, now could be a good time to invest in Robinhood as it continues to expand its presence in the crypto market.

  • Michigan Football awaits decisions from 3 upperclassmen, as NFL Draft deadline looms

With the 2025 NFL Draft deadline looming, Michigan Football awaits decisions from three upperclassmen on defense heading into next season.

Neither redshirt junior defensive lineman Rayshaun Benny, junior linebacker Jaishawn Barham nor senior safety Rod Moore have made public announcements on their future intentions, with the draft deadline ending on Wednesday, Jan. 15. NFL teams will will receive an initial list of the players who have declared tomorrow, Jan. 16.

Roughly a month ago, a report surfaced that suggested Barham would return to Michigan and switch positions from linebacker to edge rusher. However, no official word has come from either Barham or the Wolverines as to whether that is still the plan for the one-time transfer from Maryland.

In addition to Benny, Barham and Moore, there’s been some back-and-forth news regarding Michigan edge rushers Derrick Moore and T.J. Guy. Both players are expected to return for the 2025 season, especially after two tweets from Michigan’s official NIL partner, Champions Circle, announced both Derrick Moore and Guy would be back. However, both tweets were deleted by the collective minutes after being posted.

The decisions from these five players will have massive implications for Michigan’s defense in 2025, as all five are expected to either start or play a considerable role for the Wolverines next fall. With the deadline approaching, we’ll find out soon how many will return to Ann Arbor with ‘Team 146’.

For additional coverage of University of Michigan athletics:

As the NFL Draft deadline approaches, the Michigan football team is anxiously awaiting decisions from three key upperclassmen. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, safety Daxton Hill, and wide receiver Ronnie Bell are all considering their options as they weigh the possibility of declaring for the draft.

Hutchinson, a dominant force on the defensive line, is projected to be a first-round pick in the draft. His decision will have a significant impact on the Wolverines’ defense next season. Hill, a dynamic playmaker in the secondary, is also garnering attention from NFL scouts. His departure would leave a void in the defensive backfield.

On the offensive side of the ball, Bell is a reliable target for Michigan’s quarterbacks. His decision to enter the draft would leave a void in the receiving corps.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh and the rest of the coaching staff are hopeful that these players will choose to return for another season in Ann Arbor. However, they understand that the lure of the NFL can be strong.

As fans anxiously await the decisions of these three key players, one thing is certain: the future of Michigan football hangs in the balance. Stay tuned for updates as the NFL Draft deadline looms.

Second-string New Zealand look to hold off resurgent Sri Lanka as Champions Trophy looms

Where ODIs were once beloved of broadcasters, particularly during bilateral tours, they are now the format boards scramble to fit into the calendar when a major tournament is on the horizon. The Champions Trophy is roughly seven weeks away, and New Zealand have played only three ODIs in the last year. They must now hasten to find their most effective combinations, fine-tune strategy, and gain some momentum in this format. All of this, however, is made more complicated by the the fact that as many as six top players – Kane Williamson, Finn Allen, Adam Milne, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert – are away at either the Big Bash League or the SAT20.

Can Sri Lanka do it overseas?

Although Sri Lanka didn’t qualify for the Champions Trophy on account of their dismal 2023 World Cup, they seem to have turned their ODI game around in 2024. They won five out of the six series they played in 2024, including against New Zealand and India. Eleven of their 12 ODI wins last year, however, came at home, often on big-turning surfaces. Although Sri Lanka have swelled their silverware collection significantly, many fans are tempering expectations until they begin winning on the more batting-friendly surfaces they tend to encounter abroad.
Jacob Duffy has played only eight ODIs, but comes into this series having been outstanding in the T20Is. He took eight wickets and returned an economy rate of 5.50 across the three matches, and was usually tight with his lines. He has been part of New Zealand’s ODI rebuild after the 2023 World Cup, and a good series here will help push his case for a place in their XI for the Champions Trophy, even after the likes of Ferguson and Milne return. He has decent figures against Sri Lanka in this format too – he took 3 for 41 in a high-scoring ODI in Dambulla in November.
In the last three months, Mitchell Santner has taken 13 wickets in New Zealand’s spectacular demolition of India in Pune; scored 125 runs and taken seven wickets in the huge Test win over England in Hamilton; and become New Zealand’s permanent white-ball captain. For so long the allrounder who gave the side balance without setting the world alight, Santner is showing signs of maturing into an out-and-out match-winner. He will need to do some serious wrangling to get this New Zealand team Champions-Trophy-ready, however.

Will Kamindu raise his ODI game?

In Tests, he averages 74 and tends to score his runs rapidly. In this format, however, Kamindu Mendis has crossed fifty only once in 13 innings. Partly this has been because he has often batted down the order, coming in as low as No. 8 at times. But so successful has he been in Tests and so well-suited does his game seem to limited-overs cricket that there are likely thoughts within the Sri Lanka team management to push him up the order for a more permanent role.

As the ICC Champions Trophy draws near, all eyes are on the second-string New Zealand team as they face off against a resurgent Sri Lanka in their upcoming match. With key players like Kane Williamson and Trent Boult missing due to injury, the Black Caps will be relying on their depth and talent to secure a victory.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be looking to capitalize on their recent good form and make a statement against a depleted New Zealand side. Led by the experienced campaigners like Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga, the Lions will be aiming to pull off an upset and gain momentum heading into the prestigious tournament.

The match promises to be an exciting and closely contested affair, with both teams eager to prove their worth ahead of the Champions Trophy. New Zealand will need to rely on their young guns to step up and fill the void left by their injured stars, while Sri Lanka will be looking to continue their winning streak and build confidence for the upcoming challenges.

Fans can expect a thrilling encounter as these two teams battle it out on the field, with both sides hungry for victory. Stay tuned for all the action and drama as the second-string New Zealand team look to hold off a resurgent Sri Lanka in this crucial match.
