Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell slams bishop who lectured Trump for ‘theological malpractice’
Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who attended the National Prayer Service with President Donald Trump, was highly critical of Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde due to her sermon devolving into political sentiments.
“It was theological malpractice on every angle,” Sewell, the pastor of 180 Church in Detroit, Michigan, told Fox News Digital on Wednesday.
“There is nowhere in Scripture that we see that a leader would stand up without God’s permission and speak to someone who is in authority… What happens in the midst of our Christian tradition is that we think that we can stand before kings and just act like we can say whatever we want, how we want in the name of God.”
Rev. Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington was among several faith leaders who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday. She was a previous critic of Trump and the U.S. government following George Floyd’s death.

DETROIT PASTOR LORENZO SEWELL ARGUES IT’S ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ FOR CHRISTIANS TO BE ‘POLITICALLY NEUTRAL’
Budde’s sermon first focused on “unity,” but then her remarks turned to immigrants and LGBTQ youth.
Budde spoke directly to the president, saying “Let me make one final plea, Mr. President, millions have put their trust in you, and as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic and Republican and Independent families, some who fear for their lives.”
Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance appeared to be irritated by the bishop’s sermon.
Budde explained further that “the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals.”
“They pay taxes and are good neighbors,” Budde said. She went on to say, “They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues… and temples.”

The bishop asked Trump to have “mercy on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away, and that you help those who are fleeing war zones of persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome, our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to a stranger.”
Afterward, Trump took to Truth Social to blast Budde’s performance, suggesting that she and her church should apologize to the public.
Sewell was in the audience “sitting with the first family” while Budde delivered the sermon. He described her speech as a “political agenda.”
“She not only did she not preach the texts of Scripture, not only did she not use her opportunity to preach to death, to bear on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but she, quite frankly, took a political agenda, superimposed it, and acted as if she was speaking for God,” Sewell said.
“She said, in the name of our God, as if God was speaking through her. As it pertains to immigration, as if God was speaking through her, as it pertains to the LGBTQ+ community. She was speaking as if God was speaking through her to the president of the United States of America.”
Sewell told Fox News Digital that “we have to make sure that our faith communities are educated.”
“Now, if she would have had a solution, if she would have spoke about how the church and how the state could work together to make sure people could get a clear pathway to citizenship, that would have made sense,” he said.
Sewell also shared with Fox News Digital what it was like praying for the country after Trump was sworn in during the 60th Presidential Inauguration on the same day as Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Sewell frequently emphasized Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

“It was Dr. King’s birthday. What does it look like for Black Americans to get out of the nightmare that they’re in in order for us to live the dream? Remember, Dr. King, he passed legislation through his spiritual and political activism,” he told Fox News Digital.
“The Bible says faith without works is dead. So my prayer was prophetic. But my prayer was also very practical as it pertains to what we expect through our 47th president in this amazing administration.”
He told Fox News Digital that Trump personally asked if he could pray at the inauguration.
Sewell, a Republican, spoke at the last Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July. He endorsed Trump in the 2024 presidential election and hosted the then-GOP presidential candidate at his church in Detroit last summer.
Detroit Pastor Lorenzo Sewell recently took to social media to slam Bishop Mariann Budde for her comments towards former President Donald Trump. In a scathing post, Pastor Sewell criticized Bishop Budde for accusing Trump of ‘theological malpractice’ during his time in office. In his post, Pastor Sewell argued that it is not the place of a bishop to pass judgment on someone’s theological beliefs, especially in such a public manner. He also questioned Bishop Budde’s motives for calling out Trump, suggesting that it was more about politics than genuine concern for theological integrity.
Many supporters of Pastor Sewell have rallied behind him, praising his boldness in speaking out against what they see as a hypocritical and politically motivated attack on Trump’s faith. Others, however, have criticized Pastor Sewell for his defense of the former president and accused him of overlooking Trump’s controversial actions while in office.
Regardless of where one stands on the issue, Pastor Sewell’s post has sparked a heated debate within the Detroit community and beyond about the role of religious leaders in politics and the importance of maintaining a sense of unity and respect within the church.

Australian Open 2025 results: Jannik Sinner thrashes Alex de Minaur after Ben Shelton beats Lorenzo Sonego
Anticipation was high among the Australian fans arriving at Rod Laver Arena that De Minaur could cause a shock – particularly given the uncertainty about Sinner’s condition.
A pale-looking Sinner was visibly shaking in his chair during his fourth-round win over Rune and benefitted from an enforced 20-minute break when the net broke.
But Sinner looked healthy in a performance where he proved again to be a class above De Minaur.
The world number one struck the ball sweetly and consistently to outlast De Minaur in the rallies.
Clinching six breaks of serves, and saving just the one chance for De Minaur in the second set, illustrated his dominance.
Afterwards Sinner said he had “a very easy day” on Tuesday, hitting with his coaches for only “half an hour or 40 minutes” to maintain rhythm.
“I felt ready for today,” Sinner added.
“When you play a night session you try to sleep as long as you can and eat healthy.”
De Minaur came into the match with a terrible record against his opponent, losing all nine of their previous meetings and winning just one set in the process.
The 25-year-old Australian was looking to end that unwanted run and become the first home player since 2005 to reach the men’s singles semi-finals.
But what was expected to be a raucous atmosphere failed to materialise on a cool Melbourne night.
It was testament to Sinner’s assured display that he largely silenced the majority of the 15,000 fans.
“Right now my worst match-up on tour is Jannik. The head to head doesn’t lie,” said De Minaur.
“In these types of conditions where it’s a little bit colder and you can’t really get the ball out of his strike zone, he can just unload and not miss. It’s tough.”
In a stunning turn of events at the Australian Open 2025, rising star Jannik Sinner showcased his talent by thrashing Alex de Minaur in a dominant display of skill and precision. The match ended in a convincing victory for Sinner, cementing his place as a force to be reckoned with in the tennis world. But the surprises didn’t stop there, as Ben Shelton pulled off a major upset by defeating Lorenzo Sonego in a thrilling match that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Shelton’s impressive performance solidified his status as a rising star in the sport, and left spectators buzzing with anticipation for what he will achieve next.
With these unexpected results shaping the early stages of the tournament, the Australian Open 2025 is already proving to be a competition full of excitement and drama. Stay tuned for more updates as the action continues to unfold on the courts of Melbourne.

In the Australian Open quarterfinals, No. 21 seed Ben Shelton of the United States defeated Lorenzo Sonego and will play No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. (Photo by Mark Avellino/Anadolu via Getty Images) The 2025 Australian Open semifinals are set. Wednesday’s matches finalized the opponents, and there is one American left standing in men’s singles: 22-year-old Ben Shelton.
Shelton, the No. 21 seed, won a grueling quarterfinal against unseeded Cinderella Lorenzo Sonego, defeating him 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4). Sonego and Shelton were well-matched as competitors and every set was hotly contested, right down to the tiebreak at the end. And if anyone wondered how 29-year-old Sonego, currently ranked No. 55 in the world, made it to the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career, all they had to do was watch. Sonego had been making extraordinary points over the entire tournament.
But on Wednesday, points like that weren’t enough for Sonego to get past Shelton. Shelton has been a slowly simmering talent on the tour for the past few years, and now he seems poised to boil over and maybe even muscle his way closer to the top of the ATP rankings.
Jannik Sinner, the No. 1 seed and defending Aussie Open champion, had an easier time against No. 8 seed Alex de Minaur. As the last Australian standing in both men’s and women’s singles, the crowd was firmly on de Minaur’s side, but Sinner still cruised to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win in under two hours.
Now Shelton, appearing in his second career Grand Slam semifinal and first Australian Open semifinal, will have to face down the world No. 1. And unfortunately, history is not on his side. Sinner has played 14 Americans in Grand Slam tournaments and defeated every one of them. Though the odds are stacked against him, Shelton will try to get a win for the USA and make it into his first-ever Grand Slam final.
Then, of course, in the final, Shelton would have to play either Novak Djokovic or Alexander Zverev, who face off in the other semifinal match on Friday.
Earlier on Wednesday, American No. 12 seed Madison Keys made it through to the semis, where she’ll face No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek. In the other semifinal, No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will take on No. 11 Paula Badosa.
In a thrilling match at the Australian Open, No. 21 seed Ben Shelton emerged victorious over Lorenzo Sonego to advance to the semifinals. With a display of impressive skill and determination, Shelton secured a hard-fought victory to set up a showdown with No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner in the next round.Shelton’s performance has been nothing short of spectacular throughout the tournament, and his win over Sonego further solidifies his status as a top contender. Fans can expect an exciting matchup between Shelton and Sinner, as both players bring their A-game to the court.
As Shelton prepares to face off against the formidable Sinner in the semifinals, tennis enthusiasts are buzzing with anticipation. Will Shelton continue his winning streak and advance to the finals, or will Sinner prove to be too tough a challenge? Stay tuned to find out as the action unfolds at the Australian Open.

#Australian #Open #Ben #Shelton #defeats #Lorenzo #Sonego #face #Jannik #Sinner #semifinalsAustralian Open Best Bet: Ben Shelton vs. Lorenzo Sonego
INTERVIEW: Lorenzo Sonego on his “fearless” attitude, and tattoo
When it comes to raw power and athletic ability, not many players can top Shelton. He punishes the ball from the baseline and has a great set of wheels for his size.
Beyond that, the tennis we’ll see should also favor the American. Shelton is one of the best servers on tour, with a monster 90.0% hold percentage on hard courts over the last 52 weeks. His serve should only to look better against Sonego, whose 13.5% break percentage in 2024 was absurdly low. His inability to consistently put returns in play played a huge role in Sonego’s 22-30 record last year. His statistics last year make it hard to believe in his hot start to 2025.
I also believe Shelton has done some valuable prep work in the offseason. His return game definitely needs some more seasoning, but his backhand looks a little better, and he’s making better decisions in key moments. The latter should serve him very well in a match like this, which could feature some tight sets —and possibly even a couple of tiebreakers. Shelton will need to be smart in pressure points, and there’s no reason to believe he won’t be right now.
There just isn’t much that Sonego does better than Shelton, so it’s hard to imagine him doing too much damage against the American on his favorite surface.
Pick: Shelton -1.5 Sets (-141)
The Australian Open has heated up with some thrilling matches, and one that promises to be a close contest is between Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Sonego. Both players have shown great form throughout the tournament, making it a tough call to pick a winner. However, if we had to place a bet on this match, our best bet would be on Ben Shelton. The Australian player has been in impressive form, displaying a strong serve and powerful groundstrokes. He also has the home crowd advantage, which can often give players an extra boost.
On the other hand, Lorenzo Sonego is a talented player with a well-rounded game and has the ability to cause an upset. It could go either way, but we believe that Shelton’s current form and home advantage will give him the edge in this match.
So, if you’re looking to place a bet on the Australian Open, consider backing Ben Shelton in his match against Lorenzo Sonego. It’s sure to be a thrilling encounter, and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds on the court.

ATP Australian Open Picks
The Australian Open Grand Slam continues in Melbourne, and in this round of 16, Italian Lorenzo Sonego takes on Hungarian Fabian Marozsan for a place in the last 16. One thing is certain: one of the two players will qualify for the last 16 of the Australian Open for the first time in his career. Lorenzo Sonego is taking part in the Australian Open for the 7th time in his career and is in the 3rd round for the second time. He had a fine first-round performance against former top 5 Stan Wawrinka, then came from behind to beat recent ATP Next Gen Finals winner Joao Fonseca in the second round.
Fabian Marozsan, meanwhile, is taking part in this tournament for the second time in his career. And the least we can say is that he didn’t let up in either of his first two rounds. The Hungarian put up a 4-hour, 5-set battle in the first round against world #79 Thiago Seyboth Wild, before springing a surprise in the second round by stopping the #17 seed, Frances Tiafoe, once again in a 5-set match.
Lorenzo Sonego vs Fabian Marozsan Picks & PredictionIn an exciting match-up between two talented tennis players, Lorenzo Sonego will face off against Fabian Marozsan. Sonego, the Italian sensation, has been on a hot streak lately and will be looking to continue his winning ways. On the other hand, Marozsan, a rising star from Hungary, will be looking to make a name for himself with a strong performance against Sonego.
When it comes to picking a winner for this match, it’s a tough call. Both players have shown a lot of promise and have the skills to compete at a high level. Sonego’s powerful serve and aggressive playing style make him a formidable opponent, while Marozsan’s speed and agility on the court can also pose a threat.
Ultimately, I believe that Sonego will come out on top in this match. His recent form and experience on the tour give him a slight edge over Marozsan. However, I expect a close and competitive match between these two players.
Prediction: Lorenzo Sonego wins in a tight three-set battle.

Just breathe: Is meditation key to Sonego’s success?
Italian into the third round at Melbourne Park
January 17, 2025
Peter Staples/ATP Tour
Lorenzo Sonego is making his seventh appearance in the Australian Open.
By Andrew EichenholzJust breathe.
It is a common piece of advice coaches give their athletes across many sports. It is also easier said than done, especially under pressure on the world’s biggest stages.
But breathing exercises have become part of Lorenzo Sonego’s daily routine, and they were certainly helpful on Thursday at the Australian Open.
The Italian battled past #NextGenATP phenom Joao Fonseca in a five-set thriller that lasted three hours and 37 minutes. The spotlight was even brighter than normal on the match following Fonseca’s stunning performance against Top 10 star Andrey Rublev in the first round.
But instead of panicking when Fonseca won the fourth set, Sonego remained focused, saved a break point with a big serve in the decider and emerged victorious.
“I do some exercises, breathing and it helps me,” Sonego told ATPTour.com. “I stay calm on the court and the attitude is different than last year, and I am really, really calm on court.”
It was a raucous atmosphere on 1573 Arena at Melbourne Park. The stands were packed and it felt like a massive occasion.
“I like the atmosphere like that,” Sonego said. “It’s like playing in the football stadium and I like that. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and I like when the people are crazy for someone. It was really nice.”
There was also plenty of pressure on both players. Fonseca was in position to continue his breakthrough in his first major main draw after ousting Rublev as a qualifier, while Sonego was playing a crowd on his opponent’s side with a place in the third round on the line.
“Joao, he’s amazing. He’s an amazing player,” Sonego said. “The talent is incredible. And I think we will see him in the top level in a few months.”
Staying calm was crucial. It has become such an important part of Sonego’s life, that he went to Sri Lanka during the offseason for meditation.
“I started last season to work with some people that helped me with the breathing,” Sonego said. “We do something every day and that’s good for the recovery, for the mind and for staying focused every time during the match. It helps me a lot.”
Off court, Sonego is a big basketball fan. He is especially fond of Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors’ legend. “He is the best player. I think he changed basketball,” Sonego said. “They play with just three-pointers because of him.”
The No. 55 player in the PIF ATP Rankings is also a renowned vocalist. He has three songs on Spotify and one of them, Un Solo Secondo, has earned more than 1.525 million plays.
But the tennis court is where Sonego shines brightest. The 29-year-old, who debuted at Melbourne Park in 2018, will play Fabian Maroszan to make the fourth round at the tournament for the first time.
“This was the first Grand Slam in my life, and I think one of the best tournaments,” Sonego said. “It’s nice to be in the third round again, and I want to continue in this tournament.”
Italian tennis player Lorenzo Sonego has been making waves in the ATP Tour with his impressive performances on the court. Many fans and analysts have been wondering what the key to his success is, and some are pointing to his meditation practice as a possible factor.Sonego, who has been vocal about his meditation routine, credits it with helping him stay focused, calm, and mentally sharp during matches. In a sport as mentally demanding as tennis, having a clear mind and the ability to control one’s emotions can make a significant difference in performance.
Meditation has been proven to reduce stress, improve concentration, and enhance overall well-being. It can also help athletes manage their nerves and anxiety, allowing them to perform at their best under pressure.
While physical training and technique are essential in tennis, the mental aspect of the game is equally important. Sonego’s dedication to meditation may be playing a significant role in his recent success on the court.
So, the next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or stressed, take a cue from Lorenzo Sonego and just breathe. Who knows, it might just be the key to unlocking your full potential.

Preview: Australian Open: Ben Shelton vs. Lorenzo Musetti – prediction, head-to-head, tournament so far
Sports Mole previews Saturday’s Australian Open third-round match between Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Musetti, including predictions, head-to-head and their tournament so far.
Expect entertainment and impressive ball-striking when Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Musetti battle in Saturday’s Australian Open third-round contest.
The Italian is undefeated against the effervescent United States player, and extending that winning run will take the 16th seed into the fourth round Down Under for the first time.

Shelton and Musetti have similarities en route to this year’s third round at Melbourne Park: both men have defeated countrymen, dropped one set apiece and faced tie-breaks in rounds one and two.
The 21st seed defeated Brandon Nakashima in his tournament opener in straight sets before needing four to seal a round-two triumph over Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta despite losing a third-set shootout; the American clinched the fourth to seal a 6-3 6-3 6-7(4) 6-4 victory.
Following that success is a match-up with his first seeded opponent in Australia, with success for Shelton taking him one win away from matching his 2023 quarter-final run.
Although reaching the last eight may require beating in-form countryman Taylor Fritz if the United States No. 1 player defeats Gael Monfils, Shelton cannot afford to look that far ahead, given his losing record against Saturday’s opponent.
Despite exiting at this stage last year, the 22-year-old’s 80% win rate in Australia ranks above the US Open (70%), Wimbledon (67%) and Roland Garros (50%), and he aims for a ninth career win Down Under at Musetti’s expense.

The Italian player can be tagged this year’s tie-break man due to his 100% record in four shootouts in rounds one and two to eliminate compatriot Matteo Arnaldi (7-6[4], 4-6, 7-6[5], 6-3) and Denis Shapovalov (7-6[3], 7-6[6], 6-2).
Musetti raising his level in those shootouts bodes well for his prospects against the booming serve of the American as he bids for a round-four place in Australia.
This year’s run has already outdone the 22-year-old’s previous three involvements at Melbourne Park, where he suffered tournament-opening exits in 2022 and 2023 before exiting in the second round 12 months ago.
With two victories this year, Musetti has doubled his previous tally of wins at the opening major of the tennis season, thus improving on his 25% win rate before the tournament’s commencement – significantly lower than his French Open results (67%), Wimbledon (64%) and the US Open (56%).
The one-time Grand Slam semi-finalist has never lost to Shelton in two match-ups, and he aims to record a third straight success over the leftie for a fourth-round contest with Fritz or Monfils.
Tournament so far
Ben Shelton:
First round: vs. Brandon Nakashima 7-6[3] 7-5 7-5
Second round: vs. Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3 6-3 6-7[4] 6-4Lorenzo Musetti:
First round: vs. Matteo Arnaldi 7-6[4] 4-6 7-6[5] 6-3
Second round: vs. Denis Shapovalov 7-6[3] 7-6[6] 6-2
Head To Head
Miami Masters (2024) – Round of 32: Musetti 6-4 7-6(5)
Queen’s Club (2023) – Round of 16: Musetti 6-4 4-6 6-4
Musetti has won both matches against Shelton on the ATP Tour, though Saturday’s encounter will represent the pair’s first at a Grand Slam.
The Italian won their only meeting on hard courts in Miami last year in two tight sets, notably clinching a second-set tie-break.
The 16th seed holds a 25-16 win-loss record against lefties, with Thursday’s win over Shapovalov snapping a two-match losing run against such opponents.
While Shelton enters this weekend’s match 8-19 against players ranked in the top 20, the American player has notched three wins in his last four against opponents in that category, losing only to Jannik Sinner in Shanghai – his wins were against Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Arthur Fils.
We say: Musetti to win in five sets
Saturday’s meeting between these 22-year-olds could go either way, despite Musetti’s 2-0 advantage in their head-to-head.
We anticipate the match going all the way, with the Italian player taking the decider to extend his winning streak in five-setters to four following last year’s wins over Luciano Darderi, Fritz (both at Wimbledon) and Miomir Kecmanovic at the US Open.
