  • The hottest player in Los Angeles is definitely not who you think

The hottest player in Los Angeles is definitely not who you think

Is addition by subtraction a myth? Doesn’t appear so. Norman Powell proved the sentiment is true in his December to remember for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Fans and pundits counted the LA Clippers out of playoff contention when Paul George signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in the offseason, combined with Kawhi Leonard’s absence. They stand proudly at 19-13, good enough for the 5th seed behind the brilliance of Powell and James Harden (and team defense).

Harden’s burden was scheduled to be heavier, but Norman Powell — who is averaging nearly 25 points per game — was not on many bingo cards.

Powell has been a capable scorer since his senior year at UCLA, but his dynamite scoring in the league this year has brought attention back to the Clippers.

Since 12/1/24, Powell has been averaging a whopping 27 PPG with a 63.7 TS%. He’s been on a heater all year, and some thought he’d cool down by now. Powell is doubling down, somehow heating up even more. Come off Powell, and he’ll burn you.

Catch and pull-up shooting are critical components of elite 3-point shooting, and Powell shines in both. He’s shooting a blistering 49% on catch-and-shoot 3’s. With Harden setting the table and Powell ready to strike, the two have connected on 52 Harden-to-Powell assists.

Pull-up shooting is even more difficult because these are self-created shots more often than not. It takes a special shooter to connect on 42% of their pull-up 3’s. Powell has been unconscious from everywhere. His shot isn’t the prettiest, but he’s cash with a defender in his face. Powell shoots 36% with a defender between 2-4 feet of him from deep. He forces the defense to stay honest and punishes them with his versatility.

While Powell’s shooting sets the stage, he attacks downhill with some of the best at his position. With teams playing up on Powell due to his shooting ability, he’s able to get easier open lanes to the rim.

Playing off the ball aids his quest to the basket. Watch how he comes off an Ivica Zubac screen and obliterates the defense on the drive.

Powell doesn’t need iso after iso to get going. There’s so much value in an off-ball scorer who can get involved with cuts and movement. That’s partly how he’s crushed opponents in the halfcourt, but transition play has always been a staple in Powell’s game.

You would’ve thought Powell was the 6-foot-8 player who’s strong as a bull. At 215 lbs, Powell effortlessly absorbs contact from a much bigger Aaron Gordon and converts on a trickery euro step. Powell is sixth in the league in transition, averaging 6.6 points per game.

He’s getting out in the open floor, forcing his opponents to play 100 MPH to defend the Powell onslaught.

Part of his surge is opportunity-based. With an older Harden and no Goerge and Leonard, Powell has had the chance to be the No. 1 option.

Kawhi Leonard is slated to return sometime in January, but don’t expect Powell’s numbers to change drastically. He may not average 25 a game because there’s only one ball, but he’s not an on-ball dominator. He’ll still get plenty of looks playing off Kawhi and Harden. Kawhi’s return won’t hurt Powell in transition, either.

If Powell were in the East, there would be much more buzz about a potential All-Star campaign. 25 PPG on 63 TS% is no simple task, regardless of the opportunity one receives. You can’t be that efficient unless you’re a certified bucket-getter. Powell is proving addition by subtraction isn’t just a saying in Clipper Nation.

  • Los Angeles Clippers’ Norman Powell On His Breakthrough Season And His ‘Understand The Grind’ Foundation

Los Angeles Clippers’ Norman Powell On His Breakthrough Season And His ‘Understand The Grind’ Foundation

Los Angeles Clippers star Norman Powell knows all about his motto, “Understand the Grind.” The 31-year-old veteran is having a breakthrough season in his 10th year in the league, leading the Clippers in scoring with 24.6 points per game while posting a scorching 45.9% rate from beyond the arc (fifth in the NBA).

Powell worked his way up from as un unheralded second-round draft pick who wasn’t guaranteed a roster spot with the Raptors, to being a valuable role player with Toronto during their title run in 2019. Fast forward to now where he’s emerged as the lead scoring option for a Clippers team that currently has a 19-14 record without Kawhi Leonard and will likely be contending for a playoff spot in a tough Western Conference.

“I had a big goal in mind,” says Powell in a one-on-one interview. “I had high expectations for myself no matter what was being put out about me and where I would fit and if I’d be able to make it in the league. I always saw myself where I’m at now, being a key guy to a team, helping contribute night in and night out, a No. 1 option, that was always my mindset.”

The 6-foot-3 shooting guard says he always envisioned himself as a lead scoring option, but explains how he had to be a role player during the first half of his career before emerging as one. During Powell’s first four seasons in Toronto, he averaged less than nine points per game. He’s now averaged at least 16 points per game every season ever since.

During the Raptors’ 2018-19 championship season, Powell averaged 8.6 points in 18.8 minutes per game as the ninth-leading scorer on the team.

“At the end of the day, I had to sit back and realize what it takes to get there,” says Powell. “I knew I had to work my way up and fit into a specific role to get on the floor. I was all about winning. I’m still about winning. Whatever the team needs and whatever role they think Im going to be best suited to help this team win, I’m going to do that while still striving for more and then going after my own individual goals and expectations.”

Powell’s surprising emergence as the Clippers’ leading scorer in the aftermath of future Hall of Famers Paul George and Russell Westbrook leaving makes him a potential All-Star player and All-NBA team selection. Those are both key goals of Powell’s as he seeks to cross those off of his checklist for the first time.

“It’s been 10 years being in the league and this is my first year being a one or two scoring option on a team,” says Powell. “It was all about getting better and knowing what I had to do each and every year to take a step forward in the path I had for myself.”

Powell’s “Understand the Grind” motto is a key thought process in his career. When he was drafted in 2015, the Raptors wanted to stash him overseas to earn his contract. However, Powell had no interest in doing that, instead earning his contract through his play in summer league.

The veteran guard details that he would have probably went back to school to become a lawyer if his basketball career didn’t pan out, but admits that there was no real “Plan B” if his career on the hardwood fizzled.

“I didn’t have a Plan B,” says Powell. “If the league didn’t work out, it was like, I’ll probably become a lawyer, go back and go to school. But I wasn’t banking on that. I put everything into this.”

The San Diego and UCLA native explains how his “Understand the Grind” motivational line comes from a conversation he had with his best friends from high school about how not many athletes from their area (Southeast San Diego ) and his generation have been successful.

“One of my friends was like, ‘Yeah, a lot of people don’t understand the grind. They don’t know what it takes to be successful. They always mess up along the path. That’s why we don’t see too many successful athletes or people coming out of Southeast San Diego,’” Powell details. “It stuck with me and we just started using that as a motivational tool whenever we have hard times or challenges and the pursuit of our own career and our own path.”

Powell’s life journey and evolution as a bit role player into a leading scorer on an NBA team has led to him creating his foundation, “Understand the Grind.” The foundation is in its second year and is aimed to help the community, specifically underserved youth.

The foundation has mentorship programs, AAU basketball programs in his hometown of San Diego, and scholarship programs for student athletes helping them make the adjustment from high school to college.

“I thought about ‘Understand the Grind’ because it’s my lifestyle mantra and motto,” says Powell. “It’s what I stand by. It’s the message that no matter what you’re faced on the journey to achieve your career, you have to understand what it takes to be successful, whatever avenue that is. I thought it was fitting to have a foundation called that.”

Powell says the long-term objective is to open up his facility near his hometown where he can help youth with sports and academics.

“It’s all about achieving your dreams and achieving success,” says Powell. “My foundation is all about giving back to the youth and the community. The long-term objective is I want to open up my facility in between San Diego and Los Angeles, somewhere neutral where kids can come and get training in their respective sports and then also the academic side of things, academics was big with my mom.

“That’s the long-term goal right now is raising money to put into these programs that we have, we’re expanding our mentorship program from not Lincoln High School (Powell’s former high school) in San Diego, but other school districts in San Diego,” Powell continues to say.

The 10th-year guard also has a clothing line that echoes his favorite mantra. Unsurprisingly, his two favorite quotes on his clothing line once again preaches understanding the “grind.”

“I have two of them — the grind pays and then the grind continues,” says Powell. “It’s always a constant pursuit of going after your goals. The grind is always continuing moving forward and the grind pays. The hard work that you put in, always pays off.”

The Los Angeles Clippers’ Norman Powell has been making waves in the NBA this season with his breakout performances on the court. The 6’3” shooting guard has been a key player for the Clippers, averaging 18.5 points per game and shooting an impressive 48.7% from the field.

But Powell’s impact goes beyond his stats on the court. Off the court, Powell has been using his platform to make a difference in his community through his foundation, ‘Understand The Grind’. The foundation focuses on providing resources and support for underprivileged youth in Los Angeles, with a focus on education and mentorship.

In a recent interview, Powell spoke about his breakout season and the importance of giving back to the community. “I’ve been blessed to have this opportunity to play in the NBA, and I want to use my platform to make a positive impact,” Powell said. “I know how important it is to have support and guidance growing up, and I want to be able to provide that for kids who may not have the same opportunities.”

Powell’s foundation, ‘Understand The Grind’, has already made a difference in the lives of many young people in Los Angeles, providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed. Powell’s dedication to his community and his commitment to giving back make him a role model both on and off the court.

As Powell continues to shine on the court for the Clippers, his impact off the court through his foundation serves as a reminder of the importance of using one’s platform for good. With his ‘Understand The Grind’ foundation, Powell is not only making a difference in the lives of young people in Los Angeles, but he is also inspiring others to do the same.

But a fun day in the park wasn’t where Renée and Ant’s day ended. Later on, the pair also made time for a grocery run, leaving the store with big smiles and one bag filled with goods.

  • A Chinese spacecraft burned up over Los Angeles. Earthquake sensors mapped its path through the atmosphere.

A Chinese spacecraft burned up over Los Angeles. Earthquake sensors mapped its path through the atmosphere.

On 2 April, a shower of fireballs lit up the night sky over Los Angeles and much of central and Southern California. Onlookers wondered whether they were witnessing a meteor, a failed rocket launch, or even a UFO.

Astronomers later confirmed that the fireballs were space debris from the orbital module of a Chinese spacecraft called Shenzhou-15, first launched in November 2022. The spacecraft’s uncontrolled reentry sparked international complaints about the dangers of space junk plunging to Earth, but the event also inspired a new way for seismologists to use ground signals to track the fate of such debris.

On March 4th, 2023, residents of Los Angeles were treated to a spectacular sight as a Chinese spacecraft burned up upon reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. The bright streak of light could be seen streaking across the night sky, leaving a trail of fiery debris in its wake.

What made this event even more fascinating was the fact that earthquake sensors across the city were able to map the spacecraft’s path as it hurtled towards its fiery demise. The sensors, typically used to detect seismic activity, picked up on the spacecraft’s descent and tracked its trajectory through the atmosphere.

While the exact details of the spacecraft and its mission remain unknown, the event serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges of space exploration. The burning spacecraft may have been a mere blip in the sky for residents of Los Angeles, but its impact will surely be felt across the scientific community.

As we continue to push the boundaries of space exploration, events like this serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers that come with venturing beyond the confines of our planet. The burning spacecraft over Los Angeles may have been a fleeting spectacle, but its legacy will live on in the data collected by earthquake sensors and the curiosity it sparked in all who witnessed it.

Game Preview #41: New Jersey Devils at Los Angeles Kings

The Matchup: The New Jersey Devils (24-13-3) at the Los Angeles Kings (21-10-5).

The Time: 6:00 PM EST; 3:00 PM local

The Broadcast: TV — MSGSN, FanDuel Sports Network West, NHL Network; Audio: Devils Hockey Radio

    No Excuses

It’s easy to punt the second game of a back-to-back when your team is across the continent, expected to play their backup goalie, and going up against a playoff team on New Year’s Day. But after the Devils lost to a bottom team in the NHL in the Anaheim Ducks last night, they do not have the luxury of taking it easy today. The Devils started yesterday’s game off right, but they gave up too many chances when they fell behind and started trying to claw back.

The Kings are 21-10-5 without Drew Doughty, who is still out with an ankle injury. They recently won both ends of a back-to-back, against Edmonton and Philadelphia. If the Devils are going to be a better team in 2025, they need to work hard in the system that won them so many games in December.

    Need a Fourth Line Tonight

I did not have too much of a problem with dressing Kurtis MacDermid over Tomas Tatar last night, but I do not think Sheldon Keefe can keep the same lineup in tonight. The MacDermid-Lazar-Bastian line was only on the ice together for three minutes and 34 seconds, which led to Bastian — who was actually buzzing — taking shifts with other lines. To try to get the fourth line over 10 minutes, I think Keefe should roll Tatar and Dowling out on the ice tonight.

    Selke Match

While it remains to be seen how Jim Hiller will deploy his lines with the last change, Anze Kopitar and Nico Hischier should be facing off against each other at least a few times tonight. While Kopitar is likely to get Selke consideration — he has not won the award since 2018 — he is showing the signs of age. Right now, Nico Hischier is sixth in the league among forwards in expected goals percentage, while Anze Kopitar is 60th, despite some Kings, such as Alex Laferriere (7th), being near the top of the league. Kopitar is slowing down offensively, generating just 1.28 shots on goal per game, down from 1.65 in 2023-24, 2.06 in 2022-23, and 2.59 in 2021-22. This sharp decline in shot production has not sunk his goal-scoring yet, though, as he still has 12 goals on the season — and he looks to set a career high in shot percentage for a third straight year (16.6 -> 19.5 -> currently 26.1). Given the crooked number he is shooting at right now, though, I do not expect this to last forever for Kopitar. So, unless Kopitar magically starts playing like he’s five years younger, I only expect him to get Selke votes on reputation. Just don’t tell the LA Kings’ announcers that.

    Jake Allen

With Markstrom having lost to a red-hot Lukas Dostal last night, the Devils are likely to start Jake Allen tonight. Allen is unfortunately in a four-game losing streak with 16 goals given up over those games, though the first of those starts stretches all the way back to November. I would have liked to see Allen go against the weaker team on shorter rest to build some rhythm back, but instead he’ll see the well-rested Kings, who don’t have to worry about having less than two days off after a game until January 10. So, the Kings can pretty much play this game as hard and fast as they want, and the Devils are managing cross-country travel and a back-to-back. NHL schedulers should all find new jobs.

But anyway, Allen has not been good since October and mid-November. At 5-6-1 on the season, with an .897 save percentage, he needs to step up. He is on track to play just 26 games with his start tonight, and his save percentage has not improved that much since he was a platoon goalie with a heavier workload in Montreal. I think Allen needs to reverse that trend a bit so Tom Fitzgerald doesn’t start considering backup goalie to be a trade deadline position of need, but I have hopes that the guy with two shutouts in 12 games can even out and be more reliable over the next several weeks.

He will have to stop a good, and occasionally very lucky LA team. Adrian Kempe (1) and Anze Kopitar (4) are both top-five in the league in goals for percentage because of their ridiculous shooting percentages, Allen’s counterpart on the other end should be Darcy Kuemper, who is on a seven-game point streak with a 5-0-2 record and .919 save percentage since December 7, when he returned from an injury that made him nearly miss a month. Keumper last played on the 28th, while his backup, David Rittich, won the second half of their back-to-back a day later against the Flyers. Rittich has an .887 save percentage in 20 games this season, though he has already played nearly as much as last season due to Kuemper’s injury in November.
