La Fiscalía General de Ecuador confirmó que los cuatro cuerpos que se encontraron incinerados y con señales de tortura cerca a una base militar correspondían a los de cuatro niños que salieron a jugar fútbol el pasado 8 de diciembre y nunca volvieron a su casa.
Poco antes, un juez había ordenado la captura de 16 miembros de las fuerzas militares del país por su posible rol en el asesinato.
“Con base en los elementos de convicción expuestos por #FiscalíaEc, el Juez de la causa dicta prisión preventiva para los 16 militares procesados por presunta #DesapariciónForzada”, había publicado la fiscalía en su cuenta en la red social X.
El caso ha generado indignación en Ecuador, con cientos de personas que han salido a la calle a pedir el regreso de Steven Medina, de 11 años, Saúl Arboleda de 15, y los hermanos Ismael y Josué Arroyo, de 15 y 14 años.
Luego del anuncio de la fiscalía, en las calles que rodeaban la institución se veían las caras de dolor y rabia por un crimen que cierra de manera violenta el que fue un difícil 2024 en cuestión de seguridad para el gobierno del presidente Daniel Noboa.
El caso se convierte en uno de los momentos más difíciles para un presidente que ha basado su estrategia de lucha contra el crimen en la declaratoria del estado de excepción, el cual le otorga poderes especiales a las fuerzas de seguridad para afrontar a las bandas al margen de la ley.

La indignación por el caso ha hecho que muchas personas salgan a protestar, exigiendo el regreso de los niños sanos y salvos.
Es por eso que horas después de conocerse la identidad de los cuerpos y el escabroso final de los 4 niños, la Asamblea Nacional de Ecuador declaró 3 días de luto por la “desaparición forzada y asesinato” de los menores.
“Exhortamos a las autoridades del Gobierno Nacional y a la justicia ejercer todo el peso de la ley en este caso”, dijo la rama legislativa en un comunicado publicado en X.

La desaparición de los 4 muchachos en cercanías a Guayaquil generó de manera inmediata una polarización entre la población, en parte impulsada por las distintas versiones de los hechos que comenzaron a circular al conocerse el caso.
En una declaración inicial, el ministro de Defensa de Ecuador, Gian Carlo Loffredo, adjudicó la desaparición de los menores a “grupos delincuenciales”.
Pero el lunes, Loffredo cambió la versión y reconoció que los menores fueron detenidos por una patrulla de 16 militares que se movilizaban en dos vehículos.
Los militares “observan a ocho personas que estaban presuntamente robándole a una mujer”, explicó.
“Se bajan los miembros de la patrulla, neutralizan y aprehenden a tres personas y una cuarta es entregada por la ciudadanía que lo había cogido”, señaló el ministro en declaraciones a la radio City.
Esta versión indignó a los familiares, y a miles de ecuatorianos que los apoyaban, e hizo que la gente se fuera a las calles con carteles exigiendo el regreso de los menores, algunos con el lema de “son futbolistas, no terroristas”.
A la hora del anuncio de la fiscalía, muchos de esos manifestantes expresaron su dolor a las afueras del edificio.
Con la detención de los 16 militares, se espera que comience un proceso de esclarecimiento de los hechos para entender qué fue lo que verdaderamente ocurrió esa tarde del 8 de diciembre.

El Gobierno de Ecuador ha reafirmado su “compromiso con la verdad” y ha garantizado que habrá “total transparencia” después de que la Fiscalía haya confirmado que los cuerpos calcinados encontrados la pasada semana corresponden a los cuatro menores desaparecidos en el barrio Las Malvinas durante una operación militar del Ejército en la zona a principios de diciembre.
“El Ministerio de Defensa y las Fuerzas Armadas han asumido el deber de colaborar plenamente con las investigaciones sin reservas ni condicionamientos”, ha indicado en un comunicado, agregando que “la verdad y la justicia son innegociables”, por lo que trabajarán “incansablemente” para esclarecer el caso.
El martes 19 de diciembre, se encontraron cuatro cadáveres calcinados cerca de la base área del Ejército en Taura, a 30 kilómetros de Guayaquil. La Fiscalía ha informado en un comunicado de que, en base a los resultados forenses, los restos se corresponden con los cuerpos de los cuatro menores desaparecidos.
La Justicia ecuatoriana ha dictado prisión preventiva para los 16 militares por presunta desaparición forzada en virtud del artículo 84 del Código Penal. Durante semanas, Ecuador no exigió otra cosa que la aparición con vida de los cuatro niños que el 8 de diciembre fueron detenidos por una patrulla militar. Desde ese momento desaparecieron sin dejar rastro. Este 31 de diciembre, cuando el país ya se preparaba para despedir el año, la esperanza se desmoronó. A unas horas de la medianoche, se confirmó la trágica noticia: los restos incinerados hallados en una zona pantanosa de Taura pertenecen a Steven Medina (11 años), Nehemías Arboleda (15), y los hermanos Ismael (15) y Josué Arroyo (14). La indignación y la rabia, que habían sido la tónica durante este tiempo, se exacerbó con la confirmación oficial de que los niños fueron asesinados y sus cuerpos, quemados.
El dolor se materializó en un grito desgarrador que silenció de golpe la protesta social que se llevaba a cabo esa mañana frente al edificio judicial, al sur de Guayaquil. La Fiscalía había dado la noticia a los familiares: los análisis periciales no dejaban duda. No estaban vivos. La desaparición, que durante 23 días alimentó la exigencia de justicia, se transformaba en una pesadilla irreversible para sus familiares. La Asamblea ecuatoriana ha declarado tres días de luto y ha exhortado al Gobierno de Daniel Noboa a ejercer todo el peso de la ley por el crimen de los menores.
Pocos minutos antes de esta fatídica revelación, un centenar de personas había irrumpido en las afueras del complejo judicial, reclamando a gritos: “¡Los entreguen vivos!” Habían llegado temprano para vigilar la audiencia de formulación de cargos contra los 16 miembros de la Fuerza Aérea de Ecuador involucrados en la desaparición forzada de los menores. En la sala de audiencias, el juez Deniss Ugalde aceptó la solicitud de la Fiscalía y procesó a los militares por desaparición forzada, un delito que, según la ley ecuatoriana, puede conllevar penas de hasta 26 años de prisión. El magistrado dictó prisión preventiva durante 90 días, tiempo en el que se investigará el caso.
El 24 de diciembre, la policía ecuatoriana siguió una pista en la remota localidad de Taura, un pueblo situado a 46 kilómetros de Guayaquil, marcado por la pobreza y la desatención estatal. En este rincón olvidado, el crimen organizado opera con total impunidad a sombras de una base militar. En la conocida zona del kilómetro 26, los agentes de investigación llegaron para intentar dar con el paradero de los cuatro niños desaparecidos, que la última vez que fueron vistos estaban sometidos y eran golpeados en el balde de una camioneta llena de militares. Todo quedó grabado por cámaras de videovigilancia, que fueron la evidencia para que las autoridades del Gobierno de Daniel Noboa, reconozcan la participación de los soldados, tras varios días de negación.
Según la versión de los soldados, ellos llevaron a los niños hasta el pueblo de Taura y los soltaron con vida, sin dar cuenta a las autoridades competentes ni seguir los procedimientos legales establecidos, como la entrega a la policía especializada en menores. Sin embargo, un testigo clave dio otros detalles: un hombre al que han denominado como “el samaritano” fue el único dispuesto a abrir la puerta a los menores. Golpeados, desnudos y aterrados, los niños llegaron hasta él. El hombre les prestó su teléfono móvil para que uno de ellos pudiera llamar a su padre. Eran las 22:59 del 8 de diciembre cuando los chicos tocaron la puerta de su casa.
El “samaritano” les dio agua y unos boxers para que pudieran vestirse. En su testimonio anticipado ante la Fiscalía, detalló que, a pesar de su ayuda, les pidió que no entraran a su casa. Les sugirió que se escondieran mientras esperaban ser rescatados por sus padres. Sin embargo, antes de que una patrulla policial pudiera llegar, la tragedia dio un giro aún más oscuro. Unos minutos después de que uno de los adolescentes llamó a su padre, un par de hombres encapuchados llegaron en motocicleta y se llevaron a los menores. Esa fue la última vez que se les vio, y la dirección en que fueron llevados parecía clara, hacia un río. Allí encontraron la muerte.

A man accused of shooting two people outside a Target store in downtown Los Angeles has been arrested following an hourslong standoff at an apartment in Westlake.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the stand-off started around 11:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Ingraham Street in the Westlake District. The standoff came to an end around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Earlier Tuesday, LAPD said they were searching for the gunman after an armed security guard and store employee who were trying to stop a shoplifter were shot near a Target in a downtown Los Angeles shopping mall.
Officers were called to the 700 block of S. Figueroa Street for a report of a shooting just before 9 p.m. on Monday. Two people were found with gunshot wounds at the FIGat7th shopping mall, where police said the security guard and Target employee tried to stop a shoplifter.
The man seen on store security camera video walked out of the store with unpaid merchandise in a suitcase and was confronted by the guard and employee, police said. The man armed with a handgun opened fire, sending shoppers running for cover.
One of the victims, a 33-year-old armed security officer employed by the mall, returned fire, police said. It was not immediately clear whether the gunman was struck.
The other victim was a 45-year-old Target loss-prevention employee, LAPD Capt. Raul Jovel said.
The armed guard was treated and released from a hospital. The Target employee remained in critical condition Tuesday afternoon.

As 2024 closes, it’s a good time to reflect on how the year treated the San Antonio Spurs. While they certainly started the year on a rough note, they’ve finished strong, going .500 in the new NBA season. On New Year’s Eve, the Spurs will have a chance to finish the year strong and head into 2025 with a record above .500.
They’ll need to overcome a tough Los Angeles Clippers squad in order to do so. The Clips have been a top-5 defense in the NBA without Kawhi Leonard, who has missed the beginning of the season due to injuries. Outside of their leading scorers, James Harden and Norman Powell, LA has some scrappy players like Kris Dunn, Derrick Jones Jr., and Ivica Zubac, who make life tough for opposing teams. Los Angeles is coming off a late-game victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night.
San Antonio lost their previous meeting with the Clippers this season despite jumping out to an early 40-14 lead. The Spurs have played two straight games in which they failed to score over 20 points in a quarter. Another frame like that could be disastrous for San Antonio on Tuesday night.
This game marks a difficult stretch of the Spurs’ schedule in which they’ll only play three games against teams with a losing record in January. Getting a win to end the year could help them build momentum going into what will likely be a difficult month.

What to watch for
The Spurs bench unit
San Antonio has gotten uneven play from its bench lately. Spurs acting head coach Mitch Johnson hasn’t found an answer at backup center, Stephon Castle has struggled, and the wings haven’t given consistent production. Because of this, the Spurs bench rotation has fluctuated over the last few games. The Clippers are a fairly deep squad with contributors like Nic Batum, Amir Coffey, and Kevin Porter Jr. coming off their bench. It will be interesting to see what combination of players Johnson uses to contend with the Clippers’ depth.
Keeping Zubac off the glass
If the Spurs aren’t careful, Zubac will make them pay on the glass. In their last matchup, Zubac snatched up 13 rebounds; 10 were offensive. The Spurs just gave up 11 offensive rebounds to Rudy Gobert on Sunday night. They have to find a way to limit the Clippers’ second opportunities – that starts with making things difficult for Zubac in the paint.
Consistent offense
San Antonio cannot afford to have the offensive droughts they’ve experienced in the last two games. Part of that has to do with the inability of the second unit to create consistent advantages in the half-court. The Spurs’ offense cannot be Wembanyama-or-bust against the Clippers’ defense. Offensive drivers like Chris Paul, Devin Vassell, and Keldon Johnson have to find ways to score, making the Spurs a more dynamic attack. An inefficient night from the supporting cast could bury San Antonio.

How did the Rose Parade start?
The event now associated with the Rose Bowl football game was initially organized by members of the Valley Hunt Club in 1890 as a way to showcase Southern California in the winter. A parade was held before the hunt club competition with flower-decorated carriages. Chariot races, jousting, foot races and a tug-of-war followed the first parade.
“In New York, people are buried in snow,” Prof. Charles F. Holder said at a club meeting, according to the Tournament of Roses. “Here our flowers are blooming and our oranges are about to bear. Let’s hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise.”
The first Tournament of Roses football game wasn’t until Jan. 1, 1902. After an absence for more than a decade, football was permanently reinstated among Tournament of Roses traditions in 1916.

Wednesday’s weather looks to be just about what the original organizers had in mind to showcase Southern California in the midst of winter. Expect a high of 70s with partly cloudy skies. Meanwhile, in New York, the forecast includes clouds, a high of 49 with a 30-percent chance of rain.

Rose Parade camping
There are some rules to know for parade route campers. Foremost, camping overnight along the route will only be permitted the night before the parade — that’s Tuesday night into Wednesday. Campers can start claiming spaces on the sidewalk beginning at noon Tuesday, but all people and property such as blankets and chairs must remain on the curb until 11 p.m. After 11 p.m., spectators can move out to the blue “Honor Line” on the street.
Drones are barred from the Rose Parade route. The Federal Aviation Administration “No Drone Zone” extends to flights over the Rose Bowl during the football game. Anyone who violates the drone ban may be subject to arrest, prosecution, jail and/or fines.

Getting to the Rose Parade
Parking in the area will be limited and sells out early. Organizers have urged visitors to take Metro or other public transportation. Metro will be offering free fares on all of its bus and rail lines beginning at 4 a.m. Tuesday through 3 a.m Wednesday. Additional trains on the A Line will be running during the early morning hours on Wednesday to accommodate parade visitors. There are four Metro A Line stations located within a half-mile of the parade route.

Deputy Mayor Brian K. Williams has been described as “the closest thing to a choir boy,” so on Tuesday, Dec. 17, when reports started coming in that FBI agents searched his home as part of an investigation into whether he made a bomb threat against City Hall, many who know the man found the allegations to be “impossible.”
The office of Mayor Karen Bass released a statement saying that Mayor Bass had been notified of Tuesday’s search at the residence of Williams, who serves as the deputy mayor for public safety overseeing LAPD, LAFD, Emergency Management Department, port police and airport police.
“Our initial investigation revealed that the source of the threat was likely from Brian Williams, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety,” the department said in a statement Wednesday. “Due to the Department’s working relationship with Mr. Williams, the investigation was referred to the FBI. The FBI remains the investigating agency.”
Williams’ attorney, Dmitry Gorin, told the Los Angeles Times that his client “strongly maintains his innocence and intends to vigorously fight the allegations.” The Mayor’s office said that because of these allegations Williams had placed on administrative leave.
“The mayor takes this matter very seriously,” Mayor Bass’s office said in a statement “When the threat was reported, LAPD investigated and determined there was no immediate danger. Following additional investigation, LAPD referred this matter to the FBI for further investigation.”
Williams has not been arrested or charged, and Williams’ attorney said his client was cooperating with investigators.
“He has a lengthy career of public service and is presumed innocent of these allegations,” Gorin said.
Williams has spent nearly two years as a deputy mayor in Bass’ office, working on issues such as police hiring, public safety spending and the search for a new police chief.
As soon as the information came out that Brian K. Williams was being investigated for this many who know came to his defense.
“I am one of hundreds who have known Brian K. Williams as a husband, father, law-abiding citizen, responsible resident, and person of character and integrity, for over 30 years,” said Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker, president of Ward Economic Development Corporation and Metro Commissioner.
“Brian has a history of service and has consistently been a champion in making a positive difference for the larger community and the underserved. He goes beyond the call of duty to correct wrong and advocates for what is right. Brian Williams has been a ‘giver’ and leader in creating a better standard of living for those who are voiceless,” noted Dupont-Walker.
“Most importantly, Brian Williams ‘walks the talk’ and leads with integrity. He has never, ever demonstrated anything other than loyalty and commitment to our city and our community. So, for me, the allegations are unbelievable and nonsensible,” added Dupont-Walker.
Randy McKenzie, who has worked with Williams for years on service projects throughout Southern California and particularly in the Pasadena area where Williams and his family live, had similar comments about Williams.
“I have known Brian for over 15 years. From his work in our fraternity (Alpha Phi Alpha) and our community from Pasadena to Los Angeles he exemplifies manly deeds. He functions with honor whenever I have worked with him. May the truth set him free,” declared McKenzie.
Along with the outpouring of support and disbelief of these allegations Williams’ resume is one that speaks of his impeccable character. Prior to serving in the Bass administration, Williams was the executive director of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Southern California, executive director of Southern California Leadership Network, assistant city manager for the City of Pasadena, and assistant city attorney for the City of Los Angeles.
Williams is a member of the California Bar, a graduate of UCLA Law School, and a member of Ward AME Church, 100 Black Men, The Boulé, and several other community service organizations.
Brandon Lamar, a Pasadena community activist who was recently elected to serve as president of the Pasadena NAACP, said, “This is hard to believe. Brian Williams has been a pillar in our community for years, tirelessly advocating for change and justice. These allegations just don’t align with the person we know. I truly hope the truth comes to light and I hope just as much effort is put into uncovering who might be behind this attempt to defame this man’s character,” added Lamar.
Williams’ pastor, the Rev. Dr. Larry E. Campbell of First AME Church in Pasadena, expressed similar comments, stating that it “strains credulity that a person who served as Deputy Mayor in two different administrations, a decades long member of the California Bar would engage in such an irresponsible (and silly) act as calling in a bomb threat on his workplace.”
Attesting to Williams “outstanding character and strong faith,” Campbell said, “For decades, Brian has not only built a reputation as a dedicated civic leader and extremely competent professional, but also as a loving husband, a faithful father and a resource person for all in the community. His integrity and probity are unquestioned.”
Scott Sanders, recently retired from L.A. County Probation Department and Williams’ friend for more than 30 years, also described Williams as “a man of high morality and upstanding character” as well as a “faithful loving provider for his wife and two sons.”
Noting that Williams is a mentor to young Black men in the community by, Sanders said, “I have witnessed him give of his own time and volunteer at homeless shelters and homes for seniors not for recognition, but because he cares about the lives of people.”
Dr. Campbell raised a point that the allegations may be deliberate considering Williams long career as a public servant who “courageously worked for transparency on behalf of the citizens of Los Angeles County, which has placed a huge target on his back.”
“Given the animus levied towards Mr. Williams by certain agencies he had the duty to oversee, let us also beware of those who muddy the waters ‘intentionally’ with smear campaigns. Careless gossip, unfounded accusations, or malicious intent can destroy years of goodwill and trust – which may, in fact, be the purpose of the allegations! I urge each member of our community to consider the weight of their words before speaking and to strive for kindness and understanding in all interactions,” advised Campbell.
Speaking even more bluntly, Sanders said, “Brian is the best man that I know, and I absolutely do not believe one word of the recent allegations that have been leveled against him. This attack on his character is a travesty and I have no doubt that he will be cleared completely and made whole. I along with a host of others are standing with Brian while the matter is being investigated because we know that these allegations go against who Brian is and what he stands for.”
