  • Coworker’s text tipped Mega Millions player to realize he won $1.2 million – NBC Los Angeles

A Southern California man realized he won $1.2 million in the California Lottery Mega Millions after a coworker jokingly texted him about winning.

Michael Chavez said it all happened on election night, Nov. 5, which was also the drawing for the $303 million jackpot.

“I actually woke up in the middle of the night to check the election results to see who won for president, not Mega Millions,” Chavez told the California Lottery.

Chavez said he went back to sleep, but later that morning he remembered he forgot to tell his coworkers that he would not be at work. He then received a funny but life-changing text from his coworker.

“He kidded me if the reason I wasn’t at work was because I had won the million. He even jokingly congratulated me,” Chavez said.

The coworker had even sent him a screenshot of the Mega Millions results.

After taking a close look at the screenshot, Chavez realized he did win the lottery, matching five of the six numbers, a total of  $1,214,818.

“I could not believe my eyes,” said Chavez.

The Mega Millions ticket was purchased at Lake Liquor in Lakewood, who will also get $6,000 for selling the winning ticket. The winning numbers for that drawing were 2-24-25-52-58 and the Mega number was 9.

Chavez said had it not been for that text, he doesn’t know when he would have checked the ticket.

“I’ll never forget election night or especially that text,” he said.

  • How did climate change affect the Los Angeles fires? : NPR

High winds and dry vegetation set the stage for the explosive wildfires in Los Angeles. Scientists are finding that climate change fueled some of the extreme conditions.

In early January, the stage was set for a wildfire disaster in Los Angeles. A long, hot summer had dried out the plants and vegetation, making it more flammable. Drought conditions dragged on, as winter rains had yet to arrive. Then came powerful Santa Ana winds, gusting above 80 miles per hour.

The result was more than 16,000 homes and buildings were destroyed after the fast-moving Eaton and Palisades fires exploded. In those extreme conditions, firefighters had little hope of getting control of the blazes.

New studies are finding the fingerprints of climate change in these wildfires, which made some of the extreme conditions worse. In particular, the hotter temperatures and a drier atmosphere can be linked to heat-trapping gases that largely come from burning fossil fuels, according to two different analyses from the University of California, Los Angeles, and World Weather Attribution, a collaboration of international scientists.

Still, for other extreme conditions that led to Los Angeles’ fires, like the strong Santa Ana winds and lack of rain, discerning the role of climate change is scientifically trickier.

While there may be a connection to climate change, it’s harder to recognize given the state’s highly variable weather, which normally swings from wet to dry years. The powerful computer models scientists use to analyze climate impacts also struggle with very small geographic areas or complex processes, like wildfire behavior.

Climate scientists are developing ways to pinpoint the role climate change is playing in wildfires. Still, the most significant human influence may be how the wildfires started since there were no lightning storms at the time that would have sparked the fires.

“The ignitions were undoubtedly due to human activity,” says Alex Hall, director of the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA. “So fundamentally, I think these fires are anthropogenic. They are human-created. We have to take the prevention of ignitions a lot more seriously, especially when we know that there’s going to be a very dangerous Santa Ana wind event.”

    Thirsty atmosphere

Los Angeles’ summer heat persisted late into the fall last year, including a record-breaking September heat wave. The period from June through December ranked as the third hottest since 1895.

A hotter atmosphere is a thirstier atmosphere. The dry air draws moisture out of plants, making them more susceptible to burning. For small vegetation like grasses, drying only takes hours. For larger things like trees, or even the wood in fences and decks, it can take days or months.

The dryness of Los Angeles’ vegetation before the fires was due to both hotter temperatures and a lack of rain. An analysis by UCLA found that about a quarter of that moisture deficit was due to the extreme heat, which was influenced by climate change.

“The fact that we have a warmer or drier atmosphere today because of global warming very likely causes large fuels like dead logs and fence posts and other materials that you find in urban environments to be drier than they would be otherwise,” says Park Williams, a hydroclimatologist at UCLA. “These fires are very likely more intense and dangerous in urban environments because of global warming.”

Another analysis by World Weather Attribution found that the hot, dry conditions were about 35% more likely because of climate change, as measured by the Fire Weather Index, which looks at temperature, humidity and other weather factors.

    Wind and rain

Winds were the biggest factor for the explosive growth of the Los Angeles fires, sending showers of embers into neighborhoods that ignited homes.

“The wind speeds were incredibly, incredibly strong, and we had an incredibly dry fuel,” says John Abatzoglou, professor of climatology at the University of California, Merced. “So realistically, this was a perfect storm when it comes to conditions for fire disasters.”

The Santa Ana winds blow when there’s an area of high pressure over the Southwestern U.S., which pushes air towards Southern California and funnels it through the mountains near Los Angeles. Often, that warms the air and accelerates the wind speeds, leading to dangerous fire conditions. Scientists are working on understanding how the conditions that create these winds could shift as the climate warms, but there still isn’t a clear answer. The conditions could decline or shift in timing.

“Whether or not climate change affected the winds is highly uncertain, very, very complicated,” Williams says.

The impact of climate change on Southern California’s rainfall is another challenging question. California saw a wet winter prior to this one, which caused dense vegetation to build up. That heavy vegetation stayed dry this winter in drought conditions.

“Normally we get our first rains, maybe around November, and that’s what kills off the fire season, but we didn’t have that rain,” Hall says.

Hall says the rainfall deficit this winter in Los Angeles was a 1-in-50-year event, meaning it has a 2% chance of happening in any given year. Still, whether climate change played a role in that is still unknown. Climate scientists use complex computer models to forecast the effects of climate change, but California’s location on the globe makes it difficult to discern what will happen.

“Most of Mexico is projected to dry and Seattle is projected to generally get wetter, and we are right between those two areas,” Williams says. “If our models are off by just a little bit, California could either get drier or wetter. And at the same time, the models do project that precipitation will become more extreme in the future, which would cause the wet years to get wetter and the dry years get drier.”

California’s rainfall is also naturally highly variable, with huge swings between wet and dry conditions from year to year. That makes it harder to pick out a pattern and the oldest rainfall records only go back to the late 1800s.

“That means that we need a much longer record to look at for things like trends in precipitation in order to detect the influence of climate change, just because the natural swings are so large,” Hall says.

Climate scientists are working on refining climate change models to better simulate wildfire conditions at a smaller scale. That could help areas like Los Angeles get a better view into their future.

The devastating Los Angeles fires have shocked the nation, leaving many wondering how climate change played a role in this disaster. As temperatures rise and drought conditions worsen, the risk of wildfires in California has increased dramatically.

Climate change has led to longer and more intense fire seasons, creating the perfect conditions for wildfires to spread quickly and uncontrollably. In Los Angeles, the combination of high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds fueled the fires, making them difficult to contain.

Additionally, climate change has resulted in the drying out of vegetation, making it more susceptible to ignition. In turn, this has caused fires to burn hotter and faster, destroying homes and habitats in their path.

It is clear that climate change has played a significant role in the Los Angeles fires, highlighting the urgent need for action to address the root causes of this crisis. As we continue to witness the devastating impacts of climate change, it is more important than ever to prioritize environmental conservation and sustainable practices to prevent future disasters.

  • San Antonio vs. Los Angeles, Final Score: Spurs fight back but Clippers pull away late, 116-128

Finally back home for the first time in 12 days, the Spurs were hoping to get back on the right foot after a rough few weeks. Unfortunately, they ran into a buzzsaw Clippers squad that is fully healthy and has Kawhi Leonard’s minutes restrictions loosened, allowing him to play in the fourth quarter. After a tight first half, it looked like there was a turd quarter in the making as the Spurs got down by 16. They fought back, even taking the lead a few times, but they just couldn’t keep the Clippers off the free throw or the offensive glass in the fourth quarter, eventually falling 128-116.

Victor Wembanyama led four Spurs in double figures with 23 points, 12 rebounds 4 assists and 3 blocks. Kawhi Leonard and Norman Powell scored 27 apiece for the Clippers, and Ivica Zubac had a 20-20 game with 21 points and 22 rebounds.

    Observations

    • First and foremost, the question on everyone’s mind heading into this game: would Spurs fans heed Gregg Popovich’s pleas from last season to stop booing Kawhi? The answer is no, they did not. He first touched the ball on their second offensive possession, and the boos began immediately and continued throughout. They weren’t the loudest they’ve ever been, but they were there.
    • Mitch Johnson continued the approach of rolling with Jeremy Sochan as backup center, and that may remain the case for the foreseeable future with Johnson stating before the game that Stephon Castle would continue starting for the foreseeable future for developmental purposes. Then, when Sochan sits, Sandro Mamukelashvili briefly comes in alongside Wemby. Both players were everywhere and created a spark when they came in, with Sochan getting back-to-back steals on James Harden and Mamu getting a bucket and flying in for rebounds.
    • Julian Champagnie’s biggest weakness may be his handles. Many of his turnovers lately seem to be unforced, and he had two such turnovers on consecutive possessions in the first quarter, first where he lost the ball out of bounds on the dribble, followed by failing to scoop up an (admittedly low pass) in transition, losing the ball off his leg despite having an open basket in front of him.
    • Victor Wembanyama did not attempt a three-pointer in the first half, and the result was four shot attempts — the least of all five starters — plus four free throws for 9 points. People wonder why he takes so many threes, sometimes out of rhythm, and this is why: a lack of touches. He finally got going in the third quarter with a middy and three-pointer, as well as a series of blocks against Zubac, who shoved him to the floor out of frustration (with somehow no call). Let’s just say he briefly poked the bear (as in the Spurs as a whole) as it came amidst a 25-11 run to close the quarter that got them back into the game after they trailed by as much as 16, avoiding a “turd quarter”.
    • The Clippers, namely Zubac, absolutely crushed the Spurs on boards with a 57-30 advantage in total rebounds, 17 of which were offensive rebounds, 13 of which belonged to Zubac. He had a field day down low, either taking advantage when the Clippers forced a switch and Wemby had to go out to defend a jumper or just straight up owning the boards when Wemby sat. The one area that kept the Spurs in the game was points off turnovers, getting 25 off the Clippers’ 17 while only coughing it up 10 times themselves. Unfortunately, the Clippers were too hot everywhere else to fully take advantage.
    • Another classic Wemby stat to close out:

The Spurs will return to the Frost Bank Center on Friday as the first part of a back-to-back ahead of the Rodeo Road Trip, beginning with the Milwaukee Bucks. Tip-off will be at 7:00 PM on FanDuel Sports Network.

The highly anticipated matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers did not disappoint as both teams battled it out until the final buzzer. The Spurs fought back from an early deficit to make it a close game, but in the end, the Clippers pulled away late to secure a 128-116 victory.

The game started off with the Clippers dominating on both ends of the court, taking an early lead behind the stellar play of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. However, the Spurs refused to back down and mounted a comeback in the second half, thanks to the strong performances from DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge.

Despite the Spurs’ best efforts, the Clippers proved to be too much to handle as they continued to hit shots and play stifling defense. Leonard and George continued to lead the charge for the Clippers, finishing with impressive stat lines and making key plays down the stretch to seal the win.

Overall, it was a hard-fought battle between two talented teams, but in the end, the Clippers came out on top with a 128-116 victory. Both teams showed why they are considered contenders in the Western Conference, and fans were treated to an exciting and competitive game from start to finish.

Lakers at Wizards picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Lakers 109, Wizards 104

    Moneyline

    PASS.

This feels like a trap game, as the Lakers are clearly the better side, but they are coming off a bad loss and are down Davis, who leads the team in points (25.7), rebounds (11.9) and blocks (2.1). While they are justified favorites, they aren’t worth playing on the moneyline.

    Against the spread

    BET WIZARDS +8.5 (-110).

The Lakers are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall, but 2 of the covers were at Crypto.com Arena. Los Angeles is just 1-3-1 ATS in its last 5 games on the road and has scored 112 or fewer in 5 of its last 7, so it may not pull away by a sizable margin.

Washington is the opposite. It has lost 15 straight, but it has covered 2 of its last 3 home games. The Wizards have scored at least 108 in 2 of their last 3 as well. Expect them to be able to keep it somewhat close.

    Take WIZARDS +8.5 (-110).

    Over/Under

    BET UNDER 223.5 (-110).

The Wizards have an inefficient offense. They haven’t scored more than 110 points since Jan. 18 and are 1-5 O/U in their last 6 games, allowing 111 or fewer in 3 of their last 5.

The Lakers are 2-3 O/U in their last 5 games and will be without their leading scorer in Davis on Thursday. Considering those trends, take UNDER 223.5 (-110).
