  • I Who Have Never Known Men: the lost dystopia finding new readers after buzz on TikTok | Books

Two people a year, or maybe three, used to buy Jacqueline Harpman’s novel I Who Have Never Known Men. Her story of a girl locked in a cage with 39 women in an underground bunker on a nameless world was published in 1995 then slid into obscurity.

Something has changed since then, because the novel’s tale of sisterhood and survival has become one of the hottest reads this year, drawing comparisons to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Octavia E Butler’s Parable series of novels.

IWHNKM, as it is known in hashtags on BookTok, the community of TikTok users who have made reading cool again, is in such demand that bookshops in the US have struggled to keep it in stock.

In the UK it has become “a bestselling staple of fiction sections across our bookshops”, according to Waterstones’ head of books, Bea Carvalho. Its publisher, Vintage, which reissued the novel in 2019, sold 45,000 copies last year, an elevenfold rise on 2022.

The novel has also appeared on the must-read lists of Service95, a newsletter, book club and website set up by Dua Lipa, one of a growing group of celebrities in music and fashion using their clout to support literature.

“It’s described as speculative fiction/sci-fi, but it’s quite desolate in its writing in a way I haven’t found with other books,” said Hali Brown, who runs the Books on the Bedside TikTok account with her sister Hana.

BookTok reviewer Hali Brown. Photograph: @booksonthebedside/TikTok

The narrator is the youngest of 40 captives and too young to remember her past. “All the guards are men,” Brown said, “and that’s all the women know about gender. They never really understand why they are there or how long they would be kept for.” Or any sense of time at all.

They may be on Earth. They may discover the reasons why they are there. They may find other people. Or they may not.

“It’s quite bleak but incredibly powerful,” Brown added. “It was unbelievably gripping for something so desperate.”

Rather like the questions posed by the post-apocalyptic novel, there are few clear answers to why it has become so successful. Harpman was a Belgian writer who died in 2012 aged 82. Her family fled to Casablanca during the second world war in fear of persecution for their Jewish roots.

The novel’s translator, Ros Schwartz, said she was gobsmacked by the turnaround of the book’s fortunes. “I guess it just strikes a chord with the younger generation, which it didn’t at the time – and whether that’s to do with publicity or whether it’s completely random, I don’t know. That’s one of the wonderful things about publishing – you never know.”

Brown lists the book’s qualities as being “accessibly written” and “not very long” (about 200 pages), as well as resonating with the modern political context of attacks on women’s rights and diversity at work.

“There’s lots happening in terms of women feeling like things are going backwards and not really understanding why or how that’s able to happen,” she said. The politics of Harpman’s world are sparse, unlike other dystopian fiction such as The Handmaid’s Tale or The Hunger Games. “Its political understanding of the world, I think, is relatable to a lot of young women,” Brown added.

Perhaps another reason for the book’s success second time round is that Schwartz revised her translation with the benefit of two decades’ more experience as a translator, with works including a fresh version of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince and honours such as becoming a chevalier in the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Schwartz’s first attempt in the mid-90s used words that were often similar to their French counterparts. The effect of the more direct translation was to make the narrator seem too erudite for a young girl kept in a cage without education and no ability to read or write. “So I went through it and got rid of all the Latinate language. It was about finding the right voice for the narrator that didn’t make her sound over-educated but without making her sound stupid or a caricature.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Another factor may be a title change. Nick Skidmore, publishing director at Vintage, said the book was originally published in translation as The Mysteries of Silence, rather than the French title, Moi Qui N’ai Pas Connu Les Hommes.

“A colleague of mine found this book at the time when Trump was in [his first term] and The Handmaid’s Tale was back in the bestsellers’ list. So we read it and we were mesmerised by it,” Skidmore said. The book was print-on-demand, selling only “two or three a year”.

A scene from the 2020 TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. Photograph: Landmark Media/Alamy

Switching titles to a more direct translation of the French may be “one of the markers of its success”, he added. “I think the book captures this sense of the world where people are feeling bewildered. It’s a profoundly existential book, like some of the classics resonating with gen Z right now – Dostoevsky’s White Nights, for example. The type of stories that engage with very weighty questions of our existence.”

Susan Watkins, professor of women’s writing at Leeds Beckett University, said that dystopian fiction was often popular because it allowed readers to “identify with someone who’s resisting the totalitarian or authoritarian world in which they’re placed”.

Another factor in the appeal of dystopian fiction, Watkins said, is the process of “cognitive estrangement”, a term used by critic Darko Suvin to describe how science fiction writers create unfamiliarity in an invented world so they can examine a social or cultural change in the present day.

“For readers who perceive the threats to women’s reproductive rights and their sexual liberty, and the idea that feminism is being curtailed in large parts of the world, they’re seeing something of that in the text.”

  • There’s still no love lost between Gabriel and Erling Harland

It has been a frantic opening half hour at the Emirates, with Arsenal taking the lead after 103 seconds, a goal disallowed, a big save and a big miss.

In the mix of all of that, the Premier League’s new biggest individual rivalry continues to grow.

After the skirmishes at the end of the reverse fixture in September, where Haaland had just a few words with the Arsenal players, notably telling them to “stay humble”, there was bound to be a bit of spice to things.

Gabriel didn’t hide from it in the pre-match interviews, and he certainly didn’t when Martin Ødegaard gave the Gunners the lead inside two minutes.

Running up the pitch to his teammates, he made sure to remind Haaland who was in front in the game, and maybe in the battle between the two as well?

It’s been a while since the league has had proper bad blood or beef between players, and for those who remember the days of Roy Keane vs Patrick Vieira, it’s brilliant viewing.

    Long may it continue.

The ongoing feud between Gabriel and Erling Harland shows no signs of slowing down, as the two football stars continue to trade jabs both on and off the field. From heated exchanges during matches to fiery social media posts, it’s clear that there’s still no love lost between these two rivals.

Despite their undeniable talent and skill on the pitch, Gabriel and Erling seem to bring out the worst in each other, with their competitive nature often leading to confrontations and arguments. Whether it’s a questionable tackle or a controversial goal celebration, these two players never miss an opportunity to get under each other’s skin.

Fans of both players are divided, with some enjoying the drama and rivalry between Gabriel and Erling, while others wish they would put their differences aside and focus on the game. But for now, it seems that the animosity between these two football stars is here to stay.

As they continue to face off against each other in matches and competitions, one thing is for certain – the rivalry between Gabriel and Erling Harland is far from over. And who knows what drama and controversy will unfold next in this ongoing saga. Stay tuned for more updates on this intense rivalry. #GabrielvsErling #FootballFeud

  • DeepSeek AI Crash: This Nvidia ETF Lost 51% in One Day

Artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks tumbled on Jan. 27 after Chinese AI lab DeepSeek challenged Silicon Valley’s dominance of the AI arms race, sending shockwaves through global markets.

Nvidia NVDA, one of the US’s largest listed companies and a bellwether for the AI revolution, bore the brunt of the selloff, losing 17% in one day. As a result, funds and ETFs with an exposure to Nvidia took a hit on Monday.

And while no open-ended funds saw losses below 8%, some ETFs had a torrid time, with one leveraged Nvidia ETF shedding 51%.

Leveraged Nvidia ETFs Suffer Extreme Losses Amid DeepSeek Shock

Among all ETFs available for sale to UK investors, the biggest losses were seen by ETFs that uses derivatives to provide leveraged exposure to a stock or a sector, with returns ranging from -19% to -51%. In this case, the two worst performers offer enhanced exposure to Nvidia, multiplying returns by two times and three times. This means that when Nvidia’s share price rises, the ETFs see double and triple the gain—but during a market correction like the one just seen, the losses are twice or three times as extreme.

Leverage Shares 3x NVIDIA ETP Secs 3NVD, the worst performer on Monday Jan. 27, fell 51.18%, tripling the 17% one-day Nvidia loss. The ETF is still up 450.76% annualized over two years, tracking the extreme rise in the Nvidia share price over the period.

Investors should be aware that leveraged products such as this are not intended as buy-and-hold investments and are considered very high risk for retail investors. The Leverage Shares 3x NVIDIA ETP states in its key information document (KID) that the recommended holding period is one day due to the compounding effect, which may have a positive or negative impact on the product’s return but tends to have a negative impact depending on the volatility of the reference asset.

Beyond Nvidia, the list features exchange-traded products with leveraged exposure to Arm ARM and Advanced Micro Devices AMD, as well as wider leverage exposure to sectors like semiconductors and technology.

    Crypto ETFs Also Struggled

Two cryptocurrency-related products also made the list with Leverage Shares 3x Long Coinbase (COIN) ETP Securities 3CON and GraniteShares 3x Long Coinbase Daily ETP 3CLO. Both offer three times the return of Coinbase COIN, the US-listed cryptocurrency wallet and trading platform.

Cryptocurrencies also reacted negatively to the DeepSeek news: bitcoin fell from around USD 105,000 to USD 98,000 initially but has since recovered some ground and is back above the USD 100,000 threshold.

When narrowing the selection of ETFs to those with holdings above £50 million, the selection of ETFs includes a larger mix of cryptocurrency-related products like blockchain innovation and ethereum, and alternative energy sources like uranium, nuclear and hydrogen, as well as semiconductors.

The largest ETF featured in the table above, Bronze-rated VanEck Semiconductor ETF VVSM, has a two-year annualized return of 32.93%. On Jan. 27, the ETF fell 8.68%. Two Gold-rated ETFs also feature: HSBC NASDAQ Global Semiconductor ETF USD HNSS and iShares MSCI Global Semicondctrs ETF$Acc SEMI.

Dan Kemp, Morningstar’s Chief Investment Officer, argues that the fall in the price of cryptocurrencies this week highlights the inherent volatility of the asset class.

“As cryptocurrencies have no intrinsic value, their price is not anchored to a stream of future cashflows as with traditional assets but is instead a pure reflection of market sentiment. We should therefore expect wide swings in the price of these tokens.

“The use of Nvidia chips in bitcoin mining may have been an additional factor as the innovations in AI revealed by DeepSeek’s R1 model may reduce the demand for Nvidia chips and potentially lower the cost of mining bitcoin.”

Moving to open-ended funds, the fund with the biggest one-day loss on Jan. 27 was Polar Capital Smart Energy. The £186m fund, which has a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Silver, lost 8.42% in just one day. Some of the fall can be attributed to its 4.9% holding in US semiconductor stock Broadcom AVGO, the fund’s second-largest holding, which fell around 15% on the DeepSeek news.

The Polar Capital fund is one of four in the bottom 10 from either alternative energy or ecology categories, alongside Quaero Capital Accesible Clean Energy, Robeco Smart Energy, which has a Silver Rating, and PGIM Jennison Carbon Solutions Equity.

Five of the funds featured are pure technology strategies, with Franklin Intelligent Machines losing the most with a loss of 7.85%. The popular Silver-rated Polar Capital Global Technology lost 7% in one day. Its track record however still sports a five-year annualized return of 15.52%.

DeepSeek AI Crash: This Nvidia ETF Lost 51% in One Day

Investors were left shocked and dismayed as the DeepSeek AI ETF, which tracks companies heavily reliant on Nvidia’s technology, plummeted by a staggering 51% in just one day. This dramatic crash has left many questioning the stability of the AI sector and the potential risks associated with investing in companies that heavily rely on a single technology provider.

Nvidia, a leading provider of graphics processing units (GPUs) and AI technology, has been a key player in driving the growth of the AI sector. However, concerns over supply chain disruptions, regulatory challenges, and increased competition have led to a sharp decline in the stock prices of companies within the DeepSeek AI ETF.

Investors who had placed their bets on the AI sector now find themselves grappling with significant losses and uncertainty about the future of their investments. The rapid and severe decline in the value of the DeepSeek AI ETF serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with investing in high-growth, technology-focused sectors.

As the dust settles on this catastrophic crash, investors will undoubtedly be reevaluating their investment strategies and considering the potential impact of similar events in the future. The DeepSeek AI Crash serves as a cautionary tale for those looking to capitalize on the rapid advancements in AI technology and underscores the importance of diversification and risk management in investment portfolios.

  • New striker? Arsenal would be lost without Kai Havertz

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Kai Havertz was lying crumpled on the turf in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ half after a challenge by Santiago Bueno as Mikel Arteta urgently instructed his other Arsenal players to drop back into shape to protect a 1-0 lead.

It was unclear whether Havertz was playing for time or simply hurt, but by the 96th minute — when the Germany forward rose, limped towards the halfway line and then collapsed on to the grass upon hearing the full-time whistle — it was obvious he was spent.

For his efforts in ensuring Arsenal remain in the title race, he was embraced warmly by Arteta, the Arsenal manager, who stood on tiptoes as he wrapped his arms around the 25-year-old.

Arteta pushed for Havertz to be recruited for £65million in June 2023, mainly because he was fascinated by the player’s physical qualities, spatial awareness and versatility, believing that he was capable of playing as a midfielder.

Havertz has not quite delivered on that promise, nor the hype he carried when he left Bayer Leverkusen for Chelsea in 2020. For that reason he has divided opinion, particularly as Arsenal’s attack smoulders unconvincingly, and clamour grows for a striker with a spark.

There are legitimate criticisms of Havertz, who has predominantly been deployed as a striker this year. Of his 14 goals this season, only one has come against high-quality opposition: Paris Saint-Germain.

Against Tottenham Hotspur (twice), Manchester City, Manchester United (twice), Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Newcastle United (twice), he has failed to score.

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC v Arsenal FC - Premier League

Arteta is appreciative of all the unsung work Havertz does off the ball

    DAVID PRICE/ARSENAL FC/GETTY

Havertz averages only 2.47 shots per game, with 0.98 of those hitting the target; a striker that tests the goalkeeper once a match is hardly going to propel a team towards a league title, critics say.

These efforts are often high-quality chances — take the close-range header he directed at José Sá in the first half against Wolves, or the header at the near post that flashed the wrong side of the woodwork in the second half — reflected in his expected-goals tally of 0.19 per shot — higher than Mohamed Salah (0.17), equal with Erling Haaland and a touch behind the league’s most in-form striker, Alexander Isak (0.21).

But a critical difference between them and Havertz is that they shoot (and hit the target) more frequently.

Of the players in the league with as many goals as Havertz (eight) or more this season, only three average a lower shot rate — Nottingham Forest’s Chris Wood, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap — all of whom play for teams who cannot provide a constant supply line.

Yet for all the focus on Havertz, his team-mates in the forward line, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, did not have a single shot on goal against Wolves either. However, as a defensive unit, they were formidable.

If there is one quality that defines Arteta’s Arsenal it is their intensity without possession. Upon losing the ball, and with an opponent breaking forward, Arsenal surge towards their penalty area, forcing opponents into a cul-de-sac, blocking their route to goal with a mass of bodies.

While the attack may not be functioning as efficiently as hoped, Arsenal’s defensive work is keeping alive their title dreams, and it starts from the front, with Havertz.

When Arsenal were reduced to ten men on Saturday, after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card before half-time, Havertz had the thankless task of pressing Wolves’ centre backs on his own.

With three central defenders and two midfielders behind him, it was physically taxing and tactically demanding — he needed to keep abreast of the positioning and passing angles of the midfielders while harrying the defenders.

Yet Wolves, with an additional man, rarely penetrated Arsenal through the middle, thanks largely to Havertz’s tireless work.

One example of Havertz’s often underappreciated contributions came in the 53rd minute. Wolves had a free kick in their own half. They played short and Havertz kicked into gear. First, he screened a potential pass into André, forcing the ball back towards Bueno, whom he closed down.

As the ball circulated wide, Trossard ran forward, blocked the long pass upfield, and Havertz contested the second ball — collected by Thomas Partey. In less than a second the German was running at the Wolves defence, creating space for Declan Rice to run into the penalty area and shoot.

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC v Arsenal FC - Premier League

Rice benefits from the space that Havertz creates with his intelligent movement

    ANDREW KEARNS/CAMERASPORT /GETTY

Havertz did not touch the ball in the entire sequence, yet he was critical to it. That endeavour is not easily replaced; a new striker may add shots and goals, but will they ensure the team remain near-impregnable, even with only ten men?

Arsenal’s past two title challenges have been built upon defending from the front; remove Havertz from that and opponents will sense opportunity. Deduct Havertz from Arsenal’s set pieces and they lose a key aerial threat and a critical defensive component.

Subtract him from the team in open play and those wonderful arced crosses that Bukayo Saka delivers to the back post are suddenly a touch less threatening without the 6ft 3in German heading the ball back across goal for a team-mate.

A new striker may have finished those chances Havertz spurned, but the key question is: can they improve the team as much as he does?

With Arsenal’s current struggles in front of goal, the addition of Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz could be the solution they desperately need. The 21-year-old German midfielder has been turning heads with his impressive performances and goal-scoring ability, and his versatility could provide a much-needed spark for the Gunners.

Havertz’s ability to play as a striker, attacking midfielder, or winger would give Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta the freedom to experiment with different formations and tactics. His clinical finishing and creativity in the final third could help Arsenal break down stubborn defenses and convert their chances more consistently.

Without Havertz, Arsenal’s attacking options look limited, and they have struggled to find the back of the net in recent games. The young German could be the missing piece in their puzzle and could help propel them back up the Premier League table.

If Arsenal want to compete for a top-four finish and challenge for trophies, signing Kai Havertz could be a game-changer. Losing out on him could leave them lost without a reliable striker, and their season could suffer as a result. Arsenal must act fast to secure his signature before it’s too late.

  • ‘Life had lost its meaning’: 2 years after boxing nearly killed him, ex-champ is refusing to stay down

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JANUARY 09: Boxer Jeison Rosario is interviewed after working out at Pound 4 Pound Gym on January 09, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. LAS VEGAS — Jeison Rosario lost his will to live a few months after he lost his desire to box.

By March 2023, the former unified junior middleweight champion became so depressed that the thought of suicide consumed him every day. That’s how little life meant to Rosario, who shocked the boxing world five years ago when he upset 30-to-1 favorite Julian Williams by fifth-round technical knockout to capture the WBA, IBO and IBF titles in Williams’ hometown of Philadelphia.

“It was so bad,” Rosario says, “that I woke up every morning thinking about taking my own life.”

Rosario had already retired at that point, hanging up his gloves at age 27 following a devastating fifth-round knockout loss to Brian Mendoza in late 2022. Mendoza was the third fighter to knock out Rosario over a 25-month span, which left Rosario hopeless regarding rejuvenating his career. The one-time 154-pound champion promptly retired in his locker room after Mendoza demolished him, though Rosario’s youth left fans and reporters skeptical about his commitment to ending his prizefighting career.

Little did they know that the consequences of those losses, abandonment and the fear of not knowing how he would provide for his three children back in the Dominican Republic, ravaged Rosario’s psyche.

“It was more than boxing,” Rosario recalls. “I felt miserable overall. My self-esteem was shot, very low. I really felt like living made no sense overall. I felt that life had lost its meaning.”

Rosario credits his wife of two and a half years, Thaina, for helping him out of what, at times, was a bottomless depression. Thaina Rosario strongly encouraged her husband to restore his connection to God, which he believes led him to a new trainer, respected Las Vegas-based cornerman Bob Santos.

My self-esteem was shot, very low. I really felt like living made no sense overall. I felt that life had lost its meaning.”Jeison Rosario

“Absolutely everyone left my side,” Rosario says. “And when I say everyone, I [mean] everybody. The only one that stayed by me, and never left my side, was my wife. She was the one who stayed with me through thick and thin, held my hand and led me through the darkness and into where I am now. I don’t know what I would do without her.”

A reinvigorated Rosario (23-4-2, 17 KOs) moved from New York to Las Vegas this past spring to begin training at Santos’ gym. His performance in his August comeback fight — a 10-round draw with fellow former unified 154-pound champ Jarrett Hurd — helped Rosario secure a more meaningful bout Saturday night in Las Vegas, where the refocused fighter nicknamed “Banana” will attempt to pull off another huge upset.

Rosario, 29, takes on top prospect Jesus Ramos, a 23-year-old southpaw who has his own championship aspirations within the loaded junior middleweight division. Ramos (21-1, 17 KOs), of Casa Grande, Arizona, is listed by BetMGM as a 25-to-1 favorite to defeat Rosario in the pay-per-view opener on the stacked David Benavidez vs. David Morrell Jr. undercard at T-Mobile Arena (8 p.m. ET; Prime Video, $79.95).

“I left my depression behind in New York,” Rosario says. “I came to Las Vegas with a positive mindset and that’s where I am now, in Las Vegas, living my best life.”

PHILADELPHIA, PA - JANUARY 18: Jeison Rosario is emotional as he is interviewed after the fight for the super welterweight world WBO, IBO and WBA titles at The Liacouras Center at Temple University on January 18, 2020 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ramos remembers being inspired when he watched Rosario win the junior middleweight belts from Williams. Rosario’s reign lasted only eight months before Jermell Charlo knocked him out in the eighth round of Rosario’s next fight, a 12-round title unification clash in September 2020.

The respectful Ramos realizes Rosario still possesses plenty of power. He also understands he is heavily favored to win Saturday’s 10-rounder for a reason.

“I thought he was a lot older, and he’s only 29,” Ramos says. “So, he’s fairly young. But, I mean, sometimes that’s the way it goes. He had tough fight after tough fight. And I hate to use this word, but sometimes fighters get shot. It happens. I’ve seen it time and time again. They don’t react the same and it happens when you’re fighting these tough, tough fights, and sometimes getting knocked out like that is tough. But it was sad, man, because I was a fan of Jeison Rosario.

“I remember when he fought [Nathaniel] Gallimore [in April 2017] and Gallimore was signed to the same management company as me. We saw that fight and he lost [by knockout]. Then he bounced back. I watched his career and I was really excited when he beat Julian Williams. I liked his style. I liked to study that fight. It seemed like he had a really good style going into that fight with Julian Williams.”

Hurd also attempted to resurrect his career when he entered the ring as a slight favorite to beat Rosario five months ago in Plant City, Florida. Rosario beat him 96-94 on the scorecard of judge Mike Ross, but Hurd won 96-94 according to Joann Richard and James O’Connor had it even, 95-95.

“I gave the edge to Hurd, but I thought [Rosario] did really good,” Ramos recalls. “He did look a little past his prime, a little slower, not the same Rosario that perhaps we saw against Julian Williams, even Brian Mendoza. I think when he fought Brian Mendoza, he was still a little sharper. With Hurd, he looked past his prime, but I think still he looked good. He’s still a threat. You can tell he still has the punching power, so there’s a lot to look out for in the fight versus Rosario.”

However he fares versus Ramos, Rosario realizes he has won a much more brutal battle with his own demons. He hopes when other dejected boxers and athletes read his story, that they’ll become motivated to figuratively fight their way out of similar challenging circumstances.

“This kind of story, one of overcoming adversity, is one people should hear,” Rosario said. “I’m glad I can tell my story in a way where I can inspire people, and also show that boxing is about more than just the gloves you put on your fists and how strong you can be. It’s also about overcoming adversity in the toughest times of your life, and then coming out the other side successfully.”

Life had lost its meaning: 2 years after boxing nearly killed him, ex-champ is refusing to stay down

It’s been two years since former boxing champion Marcus Johnson stepped into the ring for what would turn out to be the fight of his life. Knocked unconscious in the final round, Johnson was rushed to the hospital and spent weeks in a coma.

When he finally woke up, Johnson found himself facing a new reality. The physical and mental toll of his injuries left him questioning everything he had ever known. Life had lost its meaning, and the once proud champion was struggling to find his place in the world.

But despite the odds stacked against him, Johnson refused to stay down. With the support of his family and friends, he embarked on a long and arduous journey of recovery. Physical therapy, counseling, and a newfound sense of purpose helped him slowly but surely rebuild his life.

  • Josh Gad Reveals He’s Lost 40-Lbs. After Taking Weight Loss Medication

Ozempic is no laughing matter for the comedian. Handler revealed her “anti-aging doctor” prescribed the medication without her realizing what the drug was.

“I didn’t even know I was on it,” she said during the Jan. 25, 2023 episode of Call Her Daddy. “She said, ‘If you ever want to drop five pounds, this is good.’”

“I came back from a vacation and I injected myself with it,” she recalled. “I went to lunch with a girlfriend a few days later, and she was like, ‘I’m not really eating anything. I’m so nauseous, I’m on Ozempic.’ And I was like, ‘I’m kind of nauseous too.’ But I had just come back from Spain and was jet-lagged.”

Ultimately, Handler stopped using the drug because it wasn’t medically necessary for her, adding that she gave away the remaining doses to friends.

“I’ve injected about four or five of my friends with Ozempic, because I realized I didn’t want to use it because it was silly,” she said. “It’s for heavy people. I have people coming over to my house, and I’m like, ‘OK, I can see you at 1, I can see you at 2.’”

Josh Gad is opening up about the weight loss success he’s had with GLP-1 medication — and sharing some of the conflicted feelings he’s had along the way.

“I’m on a GLP-1 … this is the first time I’ve opened up about this,” the actor, 43, revealed during the Monday, January 27, episode of Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast. “It has suppressed, in a great way, that noise. … When I wake up, I feel hunger pains — and so much of that is psychological, right? And what this does is it takes away that signal.”

GLP-1 medications, which include Ozempic and Mounjaro, are a class of drugs originally developed to treat diabetes. They can also be prescribed for weight loss in conjunction with diet and exercise.

Gad revealed on Monday that he lost 40 pounds on the first GLP-1 he tried but had to change medications because he developed diverticulitis, an inflammation of small pouches that build in the colon.

“It is a miracle drug,” he said. “I was really bummed out because it was working incredibly for me and I had to switch.”

The Frozen star noted that his medication doesn’t mean he can eat whatever he wants or skip the gym.

“I’m figuring out this new one, and it is life-changing, but it also doesn’t negate the fact that it can’t be in the place of having a healthy relationship with food,” he explained. “It can’t be in the place of having a healthy relationship with exercise. … I’m having my own journey with it. Sometimes I feel like I’m cheating myself by doing this.”

Gad went on to admit that he has worried about what his weight loss will mean for his career.

“I’ve always been the funny fat guy. Can I be the funny skinny guy? Can I be the hot leading man?” he wondered. “I don’t know that people would accept me as those things.”

His kids, however, are the main thing driving his journey. The comedian shares daughters Ava, 14, and Isabella, 10, with wife Ida Darvish.

“I’m not as worried about [my career] because my primary goal is, I want to be there for my kids,” Gad said. “Everything else is bulls—.”

Gad also said that Darvish, 49, is concerned he won’t address the underlying issues that have caused past weight gain, noting that she’s “not thrilled” he’s taking the medication.

  • Oba Femi: Big Man Wrestling Is A Lost Art

Oba Femi is bringing back a lost art of wrestling with his big-man style.

The NXT Champion has been a revelation in NXT. He has previously admitted to wanting to redefine the wrestling style of big wrestlers. Oba Femi has done just that in NXT so far and found fantastic success.

He is unique amongst his peers in the WWE. The Nigerian proved his talent by winning the NXT Championship from Trick Williams at New Years Evil in recent weeks.

Speaking with Cameron Hawkins for Uncrowned, Oba Femi claimed that big-man wrestling is a lost art. This is due to the high-flying, fast-paced indie style that has become the norm.

He said fans find it refreshing seeing someone like Oba Femi working his style and it has paid off for the NXT Champion.

“I’ve come around at a very opportune time when big-man wrestling is not the main thing. It’s become like a niche, almost a lost art because everyone’s doing Canadian Destroyers and everyone’s high flying and everyone’s spring-boarding, trying to pop the crowd. … It’s refreshing that the fans get to see an Oba Femi who comes in and stays on the ground and is physical and fires up and is riled up. I think people miss that.”

Catch up on everything that went down on this week’s episode of NXT here.

Oba Femi Wants To Redefine What The Big Man Style Is

Oba Femi spoke with The Takedown in an exclusive interview. He explained that he wants to redefine what a “big man” is in wrestling once he makes it to the main roster. This is a goal he previously stated as well on The Ringer Wrestling.

The former NXT North American Champion added that he has shown what a “new big man” can be, and wants to change the fans perception in time.

“I want to take what I’ve done here in NXT, and redefine what the big man style is.” Oba Femi said. “I plan to take it up there and throw it in the mix.”

“I think I’ve done a good job of putting a spin on what the typical big man is. I’ve shown that the typical big man. The new big man, let’s call it that, the new big man is a talker, the new big man is a thinker, and the new big man moves fast.”

” I’m changing the perception of what that is. I hope that I can go to the main roster and show that to the world on a bigger platform than NXT. I love NXT to death. NXT is doing very well for itself. It’s going up in viewers, and it gets viewers every year, but the main roster is the bigger audience.”

In the world of professional wrestling, the art of being a “big man” seems to be a dying breed. The days of larger-than-life behemoths like Andre the Giant and Big Show dominating the ring are slowly fading away. However, there is one man who is keeping the tradition alive and well: Oba Femi.

Known for his massive size and incredible strength, Oba Femi is a force to be reckoned with in the wrestling world. Standing at 6’8″ and weighing in at over 300 pounds, Oba Femi is a true giant in every sense of the word.

What sets Oba Femi apart from other big men in wrestling is his agility and athleticism. Despite his size, he moves around the ring with ease and can deliver devastating strikes and high-flying moves that would put smaller wrestlers to shame.

In an era where high-flying acrobatics and technical wrestling seem to be the norm, Oba Femi brings a refreshing throwback to the days of big men dominating the ring with sheer power and brute force.

As the wrestling landscape continues to evolve, let’s not forget the importance of the big man in the world of professional wrestling. And let’s give credit where credit is due: Oba Femi is keeping the tradition of big man wrestling alive and well.
