Leases for all remaining New York Big Lots stores are for sale, pointing to probable closures as the company continues to work through the bankruptcy process.
Boston-based asset liquidation firm Gordon Brothers Retail Partners began listing the 460-plus locations on Jan. 14, with purchase offers due by Friday, Jan. 24, USA TODAY reported last week. The stores “are primarily located in shopping centers across 47 states and range in size from approximately 19,000 to 55,000 square feet,” the firm says on the sale site.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for expansion-minded retailers to grow their footprint by acquiring well-located stores with long-term, below-market rents,” said Michael Burden, Gordon Brothers’ co-head of North America real estate services, in a press release announcing the sale. “These spaces offer a seamless path to enhance their presence and serve new communities, making it an ideal time to capitalize on prime retail real estate.”
Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in September and had been closing some stores as it went through the bankruptcy process, announcing plans to close more than 340 stores.
In late December, Big Lots and Gordon Brothers announced a deal transferring 200 to 400 of Big Lots’ stores to Variety Wholesalers, Inc., a retail company headquartered in Henderson, North Carolina. At the time, Variety Wholesalers said it plans to continue operating the stores it acquired in the deal under the Big Lots brand and may retain employees at the Big Lots stores and distribution centers it plans to acquire, according to a press release from the companies.
Before the deal with Gordon Brothers and Variety Wholesalers, Big Lots planned to close all of its stores when a potential sale to Nexus Capital Management fell through.
Big Lots was the fourth-largest home goods retailer in the U.S. when it filed for bankruptcy, with $4.7 billion in 2023 revenue, 1,392 stores at the beginning of 2024, and more than 27,000 employees. The company has been grappling with declining sales over the past few quarters, putting pressure on a balance sheet that already included $556.1 million in debt, according to court documents.

As Big Lots files for bankruptcy, several of their leased properties in New York are now listed for sale. Here are some of the locations available for purchase:
1. Big Lots – Buffalo, NY
2. Big Lots – Rochester, NY
3. Big Lots – Syracuse, NY
4. Big Lots – Albany, NY
5. Big Lots – Yonkers, NY
These properties offer great investment opportunities for those looking to acquire retail spaces in prime locations. Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of Big Lots history in New York! Contact us for more information on these listings.
The future of Big Lots’ footprint in Western Pennsylvania remains unclear, but it’s not looking good for the Allegheny Township location.
Its lease was recently available for transfer, which is a sign it could close as part of the struggling bargain retailer’s acquisition by a Boston-based asset liquidation firm.
Locations in North Versailles, West Mifflin and Whitehall also made the list posted earlier this month by buyer Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, along with roughly 460 other stores in 47 states.
The stores are mostly located in shopping plazas and range in size from about 19,000 to 55,000 square feet, the firm noted on the sale website.
David Rosen, Big Lots’ landlord in Allegheny Township, did not immediately return a request for comment. The company is the last tenant in Rosen’s shopping plaza off Route 56.
Will others be spared?
The other 20-or-so Big Lots stores in Western Pennsylvania may have better prospects.
Stores in Harrison, Hempfield, Monroeville, Penn Hills, Ross Township, Unity and other areas could stay open as part of 200 to 400 unnamed locations transferred to North Carolina-based Variety Wholesalers through the deal with Gordon Brothers.
Up to two distribution centers, including the one in Tremont, Pa., could be saved, too.
Variety Wholesalers, which operates more than 400 stores in the U.S. — mostly under the Roses and Roses Express names — has said it plans to run its latest acquisitions as Big Lots and may retain employees in the process.
In a statement announcing the sale, Big Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn said the deal presents the “strongest opportunity to preserve jobs, maximize value for the real estate and ensure continuity of the Big Lots brand.”
The company has been seeking a buyer for many months and filed for bankruptcy protection in September.
Gordon Brothers emerged as a buyer after Nexus Capital Management backed out of a sale agreement.
Messages left with Gordon Brothers and Variety Wholesalers seeking location-specific information were not immediately returned.
The Big Lots website seems to indicate nothing is final.
A banner reads: “All stores closing: now save up to 40% entire store.”

It seems that the Big Lots store in Allegheny Township may be in jeopardy, as a partial liquidation sale is currently underway. Customers have noticed signs throughout the store advertising discounts on various items, leading to speculation that the store may be closing its doors for good.
The news has caused concern among residents who rely on the store for affordable household goods and other necessities. Many have expressed their disappointment on social media, with some even starting a petition to save the store.
While there has been no official announcement from Big Lots regarding the fate of the Allegheny Township location, the signs of a liquidation sale are certainly cause for concern. Residents are encouraged to show their support for the store by shopping there and spreading the word about the potential closure.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.
About 500 Big Lots stores are on the chopping block, including 23 in Ohio, the Dispatch reports.
Gordon Brothers, the Boston-based investment group that is buying the Columbus-based Big Lots, recently announced plans to close the stores. It is offering to sell the stores’ leases, indicating that the stores will not remain Big Lots under new ownership.
Gordon Brothers shared a 12-page document listing all the locations in the United States where the leases are for sale. See the full list here.
Gordon Brothers buying Big Lots out of bankruptcy
Gordon Brothers is buying Big Lots out of bankruptcy and has plans to transfer 200 to 400 stores to Variety Wholesalers out of North Carolina, which operates Roses and other dollar store brands. Variety also plans to acquire up to two former Big Lots distribution centers, the Dispatch previously reported, and said in a news release that it may employ former Big Lots workers at the stores and warehouses.
As of Wednesday, Big Lots said it operated 901 stores in 47 states, including 83 in Ohio, the most in any state. After Ohio, the chain’s biggest footprints remain in Texas (78 stores), Florida (68), North Carolina (65), Pennsylvania (64) and New York (49).
Closing the 500 or so stores targeted in the lease sale would cut the number of remaining Big Lots locations by more than half.
Big Lots files for bankruptcy protection in September 2024
Big Lots filed for bankruptcy protection on Sept. 9, the Dispatch reported previously. The company blamed inflation and high interest rates for taking a toll on its customers.
Los Angeles-based investment company Nexus Capital Management had agreed to buy most of its assets, the company said, but that deal fell through in December. Gordon Brothers then stepped in to buy Big Lots out of bankruptcy and then sell some of the stores to Variety.
Big Lots already has closed more than 400 locations nationwide, many in Ohio
Big Lots had already closed more than 400 stores nationwide as part of its bankruptcy process, including 20 in Ohio, before the latest announcement. Those stores are:
Aurora: 7155 Market Place Drive

Cincinnati: 8576 Beechmont Ave.
Cincinnati: 11372 Princeton Pike

Columbus Grandview: 1451 W 5th Ave.

Big Lots to close Columbus distribution center, 379 workers to lose jobs
The week before its bankruptcy announcement in September, Big Lots revealed it planned to close a distribution center in Columbus that would put 379 workers out of jobs, the Dispatch reported.
The company told the state that the distribution center would shut down by Oct. 31. All workers were to receive pay and benefits through Nov. 3.
Big Lots joins True Value, Red Lobster, Rite Aid in filing bankruptcy
Recently, there have been rumors circulating about Big Lots potentially going out of business. The discount retailer announced that it will be closing approximately 500 stores nationwide, with some of those closures affecting locations in Ohio.
This news has sparked concern among loyal customers and employees who rely on Big Lots for affordable home goods, furniture, and other items. The closures are said to be part of a strategic restructuring plan to focus on more profitable stores and online sales.
While the company has not officially confirmed that it is going out of business, the closure of so many stores has raised questions about the future of Big Lots. It is unclear how this will impact the remaining stores and the overall health of the company.
As more information becomes available, customers and employees are left wondering what the future holds for Big Lots and if more closures are on the horizon. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
NEW YORK — A late-night fire in Williamsburg, Brooklyn left at least four people, including three firefighters, hurt.
Nearly 200 FDNY members responded to the fire Saturday on Graham Avenue, where crews were still looking for hotspots on Sunday morning.
Firefighters battle intense flames
Video of the fire shows intense flames shooting out from the third floor of a building on the corner between Metropolitan Avenue and Devoe Street. The building has a pharmacy on the first floor and apartments on the two floors above.
The fire took hold over three buildings and left 10 families displaced, according to the FDNY. Those families were receiving help from the Red Cross.

CBS News New York
The fire department said it needed such a large response to get the fire under control, which finally happened at around 1:30 a.m.
Luckily, the weather overnight wasn’t cold enough to freeze hydrants, which would have made it even more difficult, officials said.
“Our units responded here in a little bit over three minutes. Upon arrival we had heavy fire on the top floor of this three-story building. The fire also extended into the cockloft. The cockloft space is the space above the top floor ceiling and below the roof line. The fire also extended to two other buildings,” FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods said.
Three firefighters were hospitalized with minor injuries, FDNY said. Another person was treated at the scene.

Yesterday evening, a devastating fire broke out in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, leaving four people injured and causing extensive damage to several buildings in the area. The fire, which started in a residential building on Bedford Avenue, quickly spread to neighboring structures, engulfing them in flames.
Firefighters from multiple departments rushed to the scene and battled the blaze for hours before finally getting it under control. The injured individuals were taken to local hospitals for treatment, their conditions currently unknown.
The aftermath of the fire has left residents and business owners in shock, as they now face the daunting task of cleaning up and rebuilding. The damage is extensive, with many buildings left charred and in ruins.
As the community comes together to support those affected by this tragic event, the road to recovery will be long and challenging. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals and all those impacted by this devastating fire.

Good morning! A high of 36 today with a chance of snow showers after 10 AM, and a low of 26 overnight. The couple next to me bailed at intermission, which gives you a good sense of the power of this squirm-in-your-seat work of thoughtful provocation from playwright Bruce Norris—and the toughest stuff doesn’t even arrive until the second act. The setting is a group home for sex offenders; obviously your reaction to the funny, sad, deeply unsettling events that unfold there will depend on your tolerance for discomfort. But as disturbing as it is, Downstate isn’t any kind of chore to sit through: I found it surprising and start-to-finish riveting.

In other news, there is growing intrigue in the House of Representatives over the situation in Ukraine. Lawmakers are divided over how to respond to Russia’s recent military actions in the region, with some calling for a tough stance and others advocating for diplomacy.
