NASSAU, Bahamas – When all else fails, ask a local.
A cab driver named Brenda, who listened as I explained my situation Thursday morning – my luggage was somewhere between Buffalo and Nassau (maybe at Buffalo Niagara International Airport? Maybe at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport?) and recommended a local women’s clothier off the beaten path in Nassau.
I don’t usually go off the beaten path in a foreign country but when I offered to pay her for the cab fare once we arrived, she said to me, “You go in and I’ll wait for you, and I won’t charge you until we get back to your hotel.”
When I went inside, the women at the shop immediately sized me up and grabbed the necessities … and almost everything fit! I asked Brenda where I could get sandals, when I got back into the cab.
“Right across the street. You need strong shoes if you’re doing business here. I’ll wait for you. No extra charge.”

Ten minutes later, I walked out with a new pair of work shoes and Brenda buzzed me back through town – an adventure if there ever is one, to be a passenger while driving through the tight streets of the Bahamas, on the left side of the road!
I thought taking a taxi through Rome was exhilarating. Nassau is right up there for the thrill.
Delta Airlines is still on the clock.
As for the driving in Nassau …
If you want to know how to drive in the Bahamas, here’s a tip: Don’t.
Take a cab anywhere – you might be safer with someone else at the wheel. Otherwise, you’ll be a part of a free-for-all that makes I-90 at rush hour look even more like a parking lot.
The British Colonial Hotel in downtown Nassau, Bahamas.
Drivers in the Bahamas drive on the left, a la the United Kingdom. The Bahamas were a British Crown Colony until 1973. It’s a young country. But as you zip through the streets of Nassau and New Providence, Nassau’s home island, you’ll get glimpses of holdovers from British rule, like a cricket complex down the street from Junkanoo Beach; the complex is part of the Bahamas Cricket Club.
The Bahamas celebrates its African and Caribbean roots, as well. Bay Street, the main drag through downtown Nassau is still being broken down in the days after Junkanoo – the period between Dec. 26 and New Year’s Eve in which the Bahamas celebrates is Afro-Caribbean roots, as well as its freedom; slavery happened in the Bahamas and other British colonies (including the United States).
Cruise ships at Junkanoo Beach, Nassau, Bahamas.
Rachel Lenzi/Buffalo News
There are parades, floats and plenty of parties. There’s also plenty of leftover confetti, metal risers that are in the process of being disassembled, and empty beer bottles that cover the sidewalks the day after the end of Junkanoo. The roar of leaf blowers and garbage haulers was almost as startling as the sound of cruise ship horns and car horns along Bay Street. After all, the streets are a free-for-all!
The Bahamas Bowl will be televised Saturday on ESPN2.
There isn’t a lot of reason to watch television here – who wants to be inside when it’s 77 degrees and sunny? But a quick scan of the channels in a foreign country made me curious – and made me think of Rusty Griswold’s complaint in National Lampoon’s European Vacation (find it on streaming, it’s an American cinema classic) about British television in the London hotel where the Griswolds were staying: “We’ve only got four channels, and no MTV!”
No MTV here – but there are plenty of channels, including BBC, France’s TV5, RAI from Italy, KTLA from California and, yes, ESPN and ESPN2.
But first, a dance-off between Liberty and UB on Thursday afternoon at Atlantis. It won’t be on TV.

Hello from the Bahamas!
I wanted to send you a postcard to let you know that despite the setback of our luggage not arriving with us, the people here have been incredibly helpful and welcoming.
From the moment we landed, the locals have gone out of their way to assist us in any way they can. From offering us spare clothes to helping us navigate the island without our belongings, their kindness has truly made our stay here unforgettable.
Although we may not have our luggage, we are making the most of our time in this beautiful paradise. The crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and delicious local cuisine have more than made up for the inconvenience.
We are keeping our spirits high and enjoying every moment of this unexpected adventure. We can’t wait to share more stories and pictures with you when we return.

In a recent wave of store closures in central Pennsylvania, popular retailers like Rue21, Rite Aid, and Big Lots have announced the shuttering of several locations by 2024. The closures are part of a larger trend in the retail industry as more consumers turn to online shopping and big-box stores for their shopping needs.
Rue21, a trendy fashion retailer known for its affordable clothing and accessories, has confirmed the closure of several stores in central Pennsylvania. The company cited a shift in consumer behavior and increased competition as reasons for the closures.
Rite Aid, a well-known pharmacy chain, has also announced the closure of multiple locations in the area. The company has been struggling financially in recent years and has been forced to reevaluate its store footprint.
Big Lots, a discount retail chain offering a variety of household goods and furniture, is another retailer that has decided to close some of its central Pennsylvania locations. The company has faced increasing competition from online retailers and larger discount stores.
While these closures may be disappointing for loyal customers, they reflect the changing landscape of the retail industry. As more consumers opt for online shopping and larger stores with a wider selection of products, smaller retailers are finding it increasingly difficult to compete.
It’s important for consumers to support local businesses and shop at smaller retailers to help them stay afloat in an increasingly competitive market. By shopping local, consumers can help ensure the survival of their favorite stores and maintain a diverse retail landscape in central Pennsylvania.

Despite a new deal to keep some Big Lots stores across the country open, Big Lots locations in Broome County are among hundreds that will soon close, or have already closed, since the company filed for bankruptcy.
Months after filing for bankruptcy and announcing the closing of all stores, Big Lots recently reached a deal that will allow for hundreds of stores across the United States to remain open.
The retailer on Friday announced a transaction with Boston-based asset liquidation firm Gordon Brothers Retail Partners resulting in the transfer of up to 400 Big Lots stores to Variety Wholesalers, Inc.
Variety Wholesalers plans to operate the stores acquired in the deal under the Big Lots brand and may employ current Big Lots employees at the stores and the one or two of Big Lots distribution centers it plans to acquire, according to a press release from the companies.
Is Big Lots in Vestal closing?
Yes. Banners hung outside the store, located at 150 Vestal Parkway W., indicate the store is closing.
The Vestal Big Lots closure announcement comes just a few months after Big Lots in Binghamton closed its doors.
Yes. The closure of the Binghamton Big Lots, located on Glenwood Avenue, was previously announced this fall.
At the time, no plans to close the Vestal store were announced.
Vestal Big Lots, a popular discount retail store, has announced that it will be closing its doors for good. Here’s what you need to know about the closure:
– The store will officially close on [date], so be sure to stop by and take advantage of any clearance sales or discounts before then.
– The closure is reportedly due to financial difficulties and declining sales in the area.
– Customers who have any outstanding gift cards or store credit should use them before the closure date, as they will no longer be valid after that time.
– The employees of Vestal Big Lots will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other locations within the company, if possible.
– If you’re a fan of Big Lots, don’t worry – there are still other locations in the area where you can shop for discounted goods.
It’s always sad to see a beloved store close its doors, but we hope that this closure will ultimately lead to better opportunities for both the employees and the community. Thank you for your patronage over the years, and we hope to see you at another Big Lots location soon.
The discount chain said on Friday that it had reached a deal with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners that would preserve at least 200 stores across the US and possibly as many as 400.
If the deal is approved, the remaining Big Lots stores and brand will be transferred to Variety Wholesalers, a privately held owner of more than 400 discount stores across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic.
“This sale agreement and transfer present the strongest opportunity to preserve jobs, maximize value for the estate and ensure continuity of the Big Lots brand,” CEO Bruce Thorn said in a statement.
The agreement followed the collapse of a rescue plan with Nexus Capital Management that Big Lots said became unviable after Nexus required additional equity financing and $20 million in additional savings.
The new $496 million deal includes $304 million in debt payments and $17 million for unpaid rent. The company said the agreement could preserve thousands of jobs at stores and distribution centers and certain corporate roles.
Several creditors have filed objections to various terms of the deal, which was presented in US bankruptcy court on Monday.
“There is no alternative to the Sale other than a liquidation, and the Debtors’ estates and their creditors are better off if the Sale were to close,” the company said in its motion proposing the deal.
It said it started going-out-of-business sales and stopped ordering inventory, adding that “with each passing day the value of these estates decreases.”
With this latest lifeline, there’s still a chance your local Big Lots will keep the lights on after all.
Big Lots, the popular discount retailer, has just received a last-minute lifeline that will help them stay afloat during these uncertain times. The company announced today that they have secured a new financing deal that will provide them with much-needed capital to weather the storm caused by the ongoing pandemic.
This news comes as a relief to many loyal customers who rely on Big Lots for affordable household goods, furniture, and more. With so many retailers struggling to stay in business, it’s heartening to see a company like Big Lots find a way to survive and continue serving their customers.
The details of the financing deal are still being worked out, but Big Lots has assured customers that they will continue to operate as usual and provide the same great deals and products that they are known for. This news is a ray of hope in an otherwise challenging retail landscape, and we can all breathe a little easier knowing that Big Lots will be sticking around for the long haul.
