  • St. Louis Blues place veteran F Brandon Saad on waivers

The St. Louis Blues placed veteran winger Brandon Saad on waivers Tuesday, shortly after general manager Doug Armstrong announced the move was coming.

Saad, 32, has seven goals and 16 points in 43 games this season and remains signed through next season at a cap hit of $4.5 million.

Armstrong said Saad will be assigned to the AHL should he clear waivers, which would give the Blues just over $1.1 million in salary cap relief.

“I talked to he and his representative. If he gets claimed, he’ll be on a new team,” Armstrong said. “If not, he’ll go down to play in Springfield. That will open up some space for different players that I’d like to see get in the lineup. So we’ll see where it goes.”

“There’s been a group that’s been here for a while and things don’t seem to be changing. Collectively you have to start chipping further and further up.”

A two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, Saad was listed on the first TSN Trade Bait board earlier this month.

He posted 26 goals and 42 points in 82 games last season. Over the course of 906 career games, Saad has 260 goals and 515 points.

Waiving Saad comes as he mired in a six-game point drought and nine-game goal drought. He saw 11:58 of ice time in Monday’s 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks

The Blues enter play Tuesday sitting five points back of the Calgary Flames for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference with three more games played.

The St. Louis Blues have placed veteran forward Brandon Saad on waivers today. Saad, who was acquired by the team in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche in July, has struggled to find his scoring touch this season, recording just five goals and seven assists in 37 games.

The 29-year-old winger, who has played over 600 games in the NHL, has seen his ice time decrease in recent weeks as he has struggled to produce offensively. The Blues are hoping that placing Saad on waivers will give him a chance to reset and potentially find his game in the AHL.

It’s a surprising move for the Blues, who had high hopes for Saad when they acquired him in the offseason. However, with the team currently out of a playoff spot, they may be looking to shake things up and try to spark some more offense from their lineup.

It remains to be seen if any team will claim Saad off waivers, or if he will clear and be assigned to the Blues’ AHL affiliate. Regardless, it’s clear that the team is looking to make changes in order to get back on track in the second half of the season.

  • Blues trade Scott Perunovich to Islanders: Why he fizzled in St. Louis, and how he fits in New York

The St. Louis Blues have traded Scott Perunovich to the New York Islanders for a conditional draft pick, the teams announced Monday.

The pick heading to the Blues would be in the fifth round of the 2026 NHL Draft, though the terms of the conditions weren’t immediately announced.

The move was inevitable at some point for Perunovich, 26, a second-round pick in 2018. His career was riddled by injuries early and when in the Blues’ lineup, he struggled to find his footing.

The 2020 Hober Baker winner as college hockey’s top player was an offensive-minded defenseman and power-play specialist at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. But points were hard to come by during his time with the Blues, with two goals and 27 assists in 97 games.

Perunovich has played in just 24 games this season and was a healthy scratch 26 times.

Why the Blues made the move, and what Perunovich brings

The club wasn’t confident playing Perunovich on a regular basis, and he clearly needed a change of scenery.

Perunovich is undersized (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) but has shown glimpses in the NHL of how he can be successful. There just haven’t been enough of them.

When he’s playing with confidence, Perunovich can move the puck and quarterback a power play. But his confidence was regularly down because of his injuries, limited opportunities and lack of success. Offensively, he was often reluctant to shoot, and defensively he struggled five-on-five. As a result, the Blues made several moves that moved him down the pecking order on defense: bringing in Ryan Suter, Philip Broberg and Cam Fowler.

Meanwhile, Tyler Tucker was called up and quickly solidified a spot in the lineup, pushing Perunovich further out of the picture. — Rutherford

How he fits on the Islanders

Well, he’s an NHL defenseman, so that qualifies him immediately. With Noah Dobson sidelined indefinitely and Ryan Pulock going straight to injured reserve after leaving Saturday’s game on the first shift, the Isles are desperate. They added Tony DeAngelo on Friday to fill one hole and now Perunovich, still only 26, can plug another.

Lou Lamoriello’s team still sits six points out of a playoff spot despite carrying a four-game winning streak into Tuesday’s game with the Avalanche. All the signs, record-wise and health-wise, point to the Islanders being necessary sellers by the March 7 trade deadline. Lamoriello isn’t waving a white flag just yet, though, and this deal — adding a once-promising defenseman for basically no cost — says that Lamoriello will give his team as much time as possible to see if the Islanders can get back into the East playoff picture. — Staple

The St. Louis Blues made a surprising move recently, trading promising young defenseman Scott Perunovich to the New York Islanders. Perunovich, a former Hobey Baker Award winner in college, was once considered a top prospect in the Blues organization. However, his time in St. Louis was marred by inconsistency and injuries, leading to his fall out of favor with the team.

So, what went wrong for Perunovich in St. Louis? One factor could be the high expectations placed on him after his stellar college career. The transition to the NHL is never easy, and some players struggle to adjust to the faster pace and physicality of the pro game. Injuries also played a role in Perunovich’s struggles, as he missed significant time with various ailments during his time with the Blues.

But now, Perunovich has a fresh start with the Islanders. New York is known for its strong defensive system and emphasis on responsible play in their own end, which could benefit Perunovich’s game. He has the offensive skills and puck-moving abilities to thrive in the Islanders’ system, and playing alongside experienced veterans like Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock could help him develop into a more well-rounded defenseman.

Overall, the trade to the Islanders could be just what Perunovich needs to revitalize his career. With a new team and a new opportunity, he has the chance to prove that he can live up to the potential that made him a top prospect in the first place. Islanders fans should be excited to see what Perunovich can bring to their team and how he can help bolster their blue line for years to come.

  • New York Islanders Acquire St. Louis Blues Defenseman

The New York Islanders addressed their needs on the blue line and completed a trade with the St. Louis Blues to improve it. The Islanders announced that they acquired defenseman Scott Perunovich from the Blues in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round draft pick.

The news comes just a few hours after the Islanders announced one of their top defensemen, Ryan Pulock, was placed on Injured Reserve. The team has dealt with injuries all season long, and bringing in Perunovich gives the team another NHL caliber defender.

Perunovich arrives on Long Island having spent his entire career with the Blues organization. The team selected him in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft following an impressive display at the United States Hockey League and developing further at the Uniersity of Minnesota-Duluth in the NCAA.

He made his NHL debut with the Blues during the 2021-2022 season, playing in 19 games and collecting six points. He spent the entirety of 2022-2023 in the American Hockey League before taking a huge step forward in 2023-2024. He played in 54 games and registered 17 assists.

This year has been a trying one for Perunovich. Playing in just 24 games, he has two goals and six points while averaging less than 15 minutes of ice-time. The Blues attempted to have him run a power play unit at the beginning of the campaign, but he struggled to command the unit.

What Perunovich does bring to New York is mobility from the blue line. He’s a strong skater, can recover quickly in the neutral and defensive zones, and can make outlet passes with some efficiency. The Blues have been tinkering with their own blue line all season long and it’s been clear that the 26-year-old had fallen out of favor in St. Louis. He gets a new chance with the defensively-needy Islanders, where he’s hoping to secure a permanent role in their top six.

In a surprising trade announcement, the New York Islanders have acquired defenseman Vince Dunn from the St. Louis Blues. Dunn, a 25-year-old blueliner, brings a wealth of skill and experience to the Islanders’ defensive corps.

The Islanders have been in need of bolstering their defense, and Dunn provides just the solution they were looking for. With his speed, agility, and offensive prowess, Dunn is sure to make an immediate impact on the team.

In exchange for Dunn, the Blues received a package of draft picks and prospects, solidifying their future while allowing Dunn to thrive in a new environment with the Islanders.

Islanders fans are excited to see Dunn in action and are hopeful that his addition will help propel the team to success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this blockbuster trade.

  • Islanders Acquire Perunovich from St. Louis

The New York Islanders have acquired defenseman Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a conditional 5th round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Perunovich, 26, has played in 24 games this season and recorded six points (two goals and four assists). He’s played in 97 career games with the Blues, scoring 29 points (two goals and 27 assists). The Hibbing, MN native has also played in seven postseason games with St. Louis, recording four assists.

The Blues selected Perunovich in the second round (45th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. He’s scored 42 points (five goals, 37 assists) in 39 career American Hockey League Games with St. Louis’ top affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Perunovich played three seasons (115 games) at the University of Minnesota Duluth, scoring 105 points (20 goals and 85 assists). He won the Hobey Baker Award in 2020, which annually recognizes the top NCAA DI men’s ice hockey player in the country. During that season, his final with the Bulldogs, Perunovich averaged over a point-per-game with 40 (six goals and 34 assists) in 34 games.

On the international stage, Perunovich represented the United States of America at the 2023 World Championships and the 2018 World Junior Championships.

In a surprising trade, the New York Islanders have acquired defenseman Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues. The Islanders are looking to bolster their defensive depth as they make a push for the playoffs.

Perunovich, a former Hobey Baker Award winner, is known for his offensive skills and smooth skating. He will provide the Islanders with another weapon on the back end and could help improve their power play.

In exchange, the Blues receive a package of draft picks and a prospect. This trade could benefit both teams as the Blues look to add future assets while the Islanders get immediate help on defense.

Islanders fans are excited to see what Perunovich can bring to the team and are hopeful that this move will help propel them to a deep playoff run. Stay tuned for more updates on this trade and how it will impact both teams moving forward.

  • Golden Knights look to avenge loss against Blues in St. Louis – Las Vegas Sun News

After the Blues on Monday handed them their fourth straight loss, the Vegas Golden Knights will get a chance for revenge at 5 p.m. today in St. Louis.

Monday’s result was the closest the Golden Knights have come to victory in a week. They lost in a shootout, 5-4.

Vegas trailed late, but goals from Jack Eichel and Pavel Dorofeyev pushed the game into overtime. Eichel missed a tap-in, game-winning goal, pushing the puck just wide, and Mark Stone shot the puck over the net on a breakaway.

In the shootout, Eichel was the only player to score, as Victor Olofsson and Pavel Dorofeyev couldn’t find the back of the net.

Vegas had every chance to win in extra time, but they couldn’t get the puck to bounce their way or came up a play short.

Two positives that have come out of this losing stretch are Tomas Hertl and Dorofeyev.

Hertl has 10 points in his last six games, including a three-point performance in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 18.

Dorofeyev has nine points in his last five games, including his first career hat trick in a 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators on Jan. 14.

The injury bug is beginning to flare up again. Cole Schwindt will miss his second straight game due to a lower-body injury.

On Thursday, it was announced that William Karlsson is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said at Tuesday’s practice that he’s unsure if Brett Howden will travel with the team this week due to illness.

In response to injuries, the Golden Knights have called up Tanner Laczynski and Brendan Brisson from Henderson. This will be Brisson’s first NHL game since Oct. 30.

The Golden Knights are at risk again of falling out of first place in the Pacific Division.

The Edmonton Oilers, who are a point behind Vegas, play the Vancouver Canucks tonight. If the Golden Knights lose, the Oilers can take the divisional lead with a win.

  • (1-20-25) St. Louis Blues-Vegas Golden Knights Gameday Lineup

Jim Montgomery made it very clear prior to last Thursday’s 4-1 win against the Calgary Flames that just because a particular lineup wins a game, or even strings together consecutive wins, that doesn’t mean that particular lineup is set in stone for the next game.

He made changes after last Tuesday’s 2-1 win against the Flames because, “Our team is not at the level where we keep the same lineup,” Montgomery said. “Our lack of consistency when we have success is something that it’s just going to be based on if guys are doing the right things out there and giving us a good opportunity at success. You play well, you’re going to play, win or lose.”

Well, following a 4-2 loss against the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday, a chance to win a third straight game this season for the eighth time but the Blues fell to 0-7-1 in those situations, there will be more changes today when the Blues (22-21-4) take on the Vegas Golden Knights (29-14-3) on the front end of a home-and-home at 5 p.m. today (FDSNMW, ESPN 101.1-FM) at T-Mobile Arena.

Brandon Saad, a healthy scratch the past two games and five games this season, will replace Zack Bolduc, who played just 7:04 on Saturday but took a tripping penalty 200 feet from his own goal that led to Utah’s tying goal in the first period, and among the switches is Pavel Buchnevich, who does have 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists) in 45 games this season, moving down the lineup. He has no points the past four games and when it looks like the defensive side of the puck isn’t there as well, something that has been a staple of his as a two-way forward, well it gets one’s attention, and it’s received the attention of the coaching staff.

As for the changes, Montgomery told reporters, “Trying to get a workman-like attitude on every line. Mixing it up sometimes creates a spark of, ‘I individually have to do more, I’m not going to rely on the guy next to me.’ That’s all.”

  • Jets complete G.M. interview with ESPN analyst Louis Riddick

Jets complete G.M. interview with ESPN analyst Louis Riddick

The Jets announced they have completed an interview with Louis Riddick for the team’s General Manager position.

Riddick, 55, currently is an NFL and college football analyst for ESPN and ABC. Before joining ESPN in 2013, Riddick worked in the front office of the Commanders and Eagles.

Riddick, who interviewed for the G.M. openings of the Lions and the Texans in 2020, is the third candidate to interview for the Jets’ post. The team also has completed interviews with former Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff and former Titans G.M. Jon Robinson.

Riddick started his NFL career as a pro scout with Washington from 2001-04. The team promoted Riddick to director of pro personnel, and he held that position from 2005-07. Riddick then joined the Eagles as a scout in 2008, moved to assistant director of pro personnel in 2009 and was promoted to Philadelphia’s director of pro personnel from 2010-13.

Riddick had a seven-year playing career in the NFL with the Falcons (1992, ’96), Browns (1993-95) and Raiders (1998).

Jets Chairman Woody Johnson is leading the searches for a General Manager and head coach. He hired The 33rd Team in a support role to help identify and vet candidates in addition to coordinating interviews. Phil Savage and Jeff Ulbrich are serving as the team’s interim General Manager and head coach, respectively.
