Waterman’s last-second layup lifts Louisville past stubborn Eastern Kentucky, 78-76

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Noah Waterman powered to the basket with 1.2 seconds left for a layup that lifted Louisville to a hard-fought 78-76 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals built a 10-point lead with a 12-0 run midway through the second half, but the Colonels stormed back and took the lead, 76-75 on a 3-pointer by George Kimble III with 1:22 left to play. Devontae Blanton missed a jumper that would have extended the lead and Louisville’s J’Vonne Hadley rebounded with eight seconds left. Waterman then drove the baseline and scored between a sea of arms surrounding the rim.

If nothing else, the game proved that Eastern Kentucky (6-7) can take a punch. Louisville (8-5) went on a 15-4 first-half run to take a 42-27 lead with 3:41 left but the Colonels rallied to cut the deficit to 46-37 at the break. Jordan Crawford’s jumper with 9:49 left gave the Colonels a 61-59 lead but Waterman’s 3 started a 12-0 run to put Louisville up 71-61 with more than six minutes left.

Terrence Edwards Jr. finished with 20 points to lead Louisville and Hadley scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds with three steals. Chucky Hepburn scored 14 points with six rebounds and seven assists and Waterman and Reyne Smith each scored 12 points. Louisville, which missed its first seven 3-point attempts to start the second half, finished 11 of 36 from deep.

Kimble led Eastern Kentucky with 24 points and Blanton added 22. Jackson Holt finished with 15 points.

In a thrilling showdown between Louisville and Eastern Kentucky, it was senior guard Carlik Jones who came up clutch with a last-second layup to secure a hard-fought 78-76 victory for the Cardinals.

Despite being heavy favorites, Louisville found themselves in a dogfight with a stubborn Eastern Kentucky squad that refused to back down. The Colonels put up a strong fight, matching the Cardinals basket for basket throughout the game.

With the score tied at 76 and the clock ticking down, Jones took matters into his own hands. Driving to the hoop with seconds remaining, he maneuvered past defenders and laid the ball in with just fractions of a second left on the clock, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Jones finished the game with a team-high 22 points, showcasing his leadership and clutch gene in the crucial moments. The win improves Louisville’s record to 2-0 on the season and provides a much-needed confidence boost as they head into a tough stretch of games.

Eastern Kentucky may have put up a valiant effort, but in the end, it was Waterman’s last-second heroics that lifted Louisville to a hard-fought victory. The Cardinals will look to build on this momentum as they continue their quest for a successful season.

Louisville basketball dispatches pesky Eastern Kentucky, prepares for bulk of ACC schedule

It felt as if Louisville basketball threw a first-half knockout punch Saturday afternoon against Eastern Kentucky at the KFC Yum! Center, using a 15-4 run to take a 42-27 lead into the final 3:41 before the intermission.

Wrong. Pat Kelsey’s Cardinals (8-5) let off the gas a little bit and found themselves in a dogfight. With 9:49 remaining in regulation, the Colonels pulled in front, 61-59; and, even when U of L responded with 12 unanswered points, they refused to go down quietly.

The final score: Louisville 78, EKU 76. Noah Waterman hit the go-ahead layup with 1.2 seconds on the clock.

    Exhale.

The Cards next play at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day against North Carolina at the Yum! Center.

BOZICH | After surviving EKU, 78-76, can Louisville take advantage of soft ACC? | Louisville Sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The preliminaries are over. They ended, quite tensely, Saturday afternoon in the KFC Yum! Center when the University of Louisville men’s basketball team survived Eastern Kentucky, 78-76.

Survived is the proper verb. In fact, it might not be strong enough.

The Cards were favored by 19 1/2 points. On a day when they spit out a 15-point first-half lead and a 10-point edge in the second half, the Cardinals needed Noah Waterman to knife across the left baseline and score a contested 3-footer over two EKU defenders with 1.2 seconds to play to … well, survive.

“They felt that pressure,” EKU forward Devontae Blanton said.

The victory was not secure until Terrence Edwards Jr. intercepted the EKU inbounds pass and then made a free throw with 0.4 remaining, the final gasp in a game Louisville needed simply to win by whatever means necessary.

“We were very fortunate to come out with a win,” U of L coach Pat Kelsey said. “It’s not always going to be pretty.”

It was Louisville’s 11th and final non-conference game. They won seven (topped by victories over Indiana and West Virginia) and lost four, all to teams expected to make the NCAA Tournament. Overall the Cards improved to 8-5.

“It’s been a tough non-conference schedule,” Kelsey said. “We played a lot of really good teams. Got our butts kicked a couple of times. But I like where our team is at.”

Considering Pitt beat the Colonels by 40 and Clemson handled EKU by 13, it was not the kind of performance to inspire many conversations about March for Pat Kelsey’s squad.

EKU led by two points with just less than 10 minutes to play. The Colonels let the Cards spurt to 10-point lead and then reclaimed the lead (73-72) on a drive by  Blanton with 2:20 to play.

The danger was legit — and unrelenting. The Cards got baskets by Reyne Smith and Waterman to avoid disaster.

“We didn’t come here for a moral victory,” EKU coach A.W. Hamilton said. “We came here to win. We’re disappointed in that locker room.”

A loss to EKU would have been a major smudge on Louisville’s NCAA Tournament resume. Did not happen. Avoiding that smudge is the positive to come from this one.

So as January approaches, March is always a reasonable topic of conversation.

Now, on to the main event — Atlantic Coast Conference play.

“I love where we’re at and I love what we’re doing,” Kelsey said.

The survivable ACC, a league with one Top 25 team.

    The open for discussion ACC.

The looking for NCAA Tournament teams ACC, a league that went 4-30 against the Southeastern Conference and 3-8 against the Big 12.

Other than Duke, there is nobody for Louisville to fear in the ACC. The Cards have already played Duke — and they do not have to make a return trip to Durham. They have a road win against Florida State secured on their resume.

What are the computer rankings forecasting?

Ken Pomeroy says U of L will go 12-8 in the ACC, finishing sixth. Bart Torvik upgrades that to 13-7, putting the Cards in a fourth-place tie. Evan Miyakawa also has Louisville sixth in the 18-team league, ahead of North Carolina State, Notre Dame and Wake Forest.

In addition to its power ratings, Bart Torvik’s college basketball analytics site added an NCAA Tournament projection table.

Prior to the Cards’ win over EKU, Torvik gave the Cards’ a 28.6% of making the 68-team field. That ranked sixth among ACC teams behind Duke (100%), Pitt (94.2), Clemson (72.6), North Carolina (71.2) and SMU (39.1).

North Carolina comes to the downtown Louisville Wednesday at 6 p.m. and that already looks like a game that will be essential to Louisville’s push to make itself a team deserving of an NCAA Tournament at-large bid.

Nothing special about the Tar Heels this winter. Their fans are grumbling coach Hubert Davis and UNC’s blah approach to playing defense. North Carolina has lost five times, although all five stumbles have been against Top 20 teams in the computer rankings.

In its only ACC game, Carolina stumbled past Georgia Tech by three points.

    Carolina is beatable.

But only if the Cards perform considerably better than they performed against EKU.

Louisville narrowly escaped with a 78-76 victory over Eastern Kentucky University in their latest game. Now, the question remains: can the Cardinals take advantage of a soft ACC schedule?

With upcoming matchups against teams like Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, and Boston College, Louisville has an opportunity to rack up some wins and gain momentum heading into the heart of conference play.

Despite their struggles earlier in the season, the Cardinals have shown flashes of potential and have the talent to compete with any team in the ACC. If they can string together some wins and build confidence, Louisville could be a dark horse in the conference.

However, they must remain focused and not overlook any opponent, as the ACC is always competitive and any team can pull off an upset on any given night.

It will be interesting to see if Louisville can capitalize on their recent victory and use it as a springboard to success in the ACC. Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the Cardinals have the opportunity to make some noise in the conference if they play to their full potential.

In a nail-biting matchup, the Louisville Cardinals narrowly escaped with a 78-76 victory over the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and momentum throughout.

The Cardinals were led by star guard Carlik Jones, who finished with a team-high 20 points and 7 assists. Jones made crucial plays down the stretch to secure the win for Louisville. Forward Jae’Lyn Withers also had a strong performance, contributing 18 points and 8 rebounds.

Eastern Kentucky put up a valiant effort, with guard Wendell Green Jr. leading the way with 22 points and 5 assists. The Colonels kept the pressure on the Cardinals until the final buzzer, but ultimately fell just short of pulling off the upset.

The victory improves Louisville’s record to 2-0 on the season, while Eastern Kentucky drops to 1-1. The Cardinals will look to build on this win as they continue their season, while the Colonels will regroup and prepare for their next challenge.

Overall, it was a thrilling game that showcased the talent and competitiveness of both teams. Congratulations to the Louisville Cardinals on their hard-fought victory!

    About Eastern Kentucky:

Fresh off its first conference regular season championship since 1979, Eastern Kentucky is off to a bit of an uneven start under seventh-year head coach A.W. Hamilton. The Colonels are 6-6, but the closest thing they have to a victory you can hang your hat on is a road win over 7-6 ETSU back in the first week of the season.

The Colonels, who were upset in the first round of last year’s Atlantic Sun tournament, are led by the two-pronged attack of veteran Devontae Blanton and newcomer George Kimble.

Blanton, now in his fifth season at EKU, currently leads the team in scoring (16.4 ppg), rebounding (6.1 rpg) and assists (3.8 apg). Blanton isn’t a great outside shooter and he’s undersized around the rim at 6’6, but he is incredibly strong and has a terrific feel for the game once he gets into the lane. On most nights, the Colonels will go as he goes.

Kimble is the less polished of the two players, but I think he’s the more naturally gifted. He still gets out of control from time to time, but he’s doing a better job taking care of the ball than he was at the beginning of the season. The 6’2 sophomore has never seen a shot he didn’t like, and he will be launching early and often inside the Yum Center on Saturday afternoon.

EKU is playing a touch slower than Hamilton’s teams of the past have, but their overall DNA is the same. They want to get up and down, and they want to shoot a ton of threes. Like Louisville, they’re one of the leaders in the country in three-point fga per fgs, but unfortunately not one of the leaders in the country in made threes. The Colonels are hitting from beyond the arc at a 31.9 percent clip, 235th-best in D-I.

Defensively is where Eastern Kentucky has struggled the most this season. The battle cry for the Colonels when their opponents have the ball this season seems to be to gamble with reckless abandon. EKU is 28th in the country in steal percentage and 66th in forcing turnovers, but when they don’t come up with a takeaway, they are giving up an insane amount of high percentage shots right around the rim or from the perimeter. They also have the odd profile of being a terrific offensive rebounding team and a horrendous defensive rebounding team.

If Louisville takes care of the basketball, it should have a third straight impressive performance on offense. It would be another good afternoon to make open shots.

    Notable:

—Louisville has won 15 consecutive games against Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels haven’t defeated the Cardinals since Dec. 4, 1963. That game was the first game ever played inside EKU’s McBrayer Arena.

—This will be Louisville’s first home game since Dec. 11. The Cardinals are 4-3 inside the KFC Yum Center so far this season.

—EKU ranks fourth in the NCAA in offensive rebounds with 15.83 per game.

—Eastern Kentucky was picked to finish second in the preseason Atlantic Sun media poll.

—The Louisville-EKU series is the longest of any team on the Cardinals’ schedule this year with 75 games between the programs.

Louisville man arrested leaving cruise ship after 10 years on the run for child support debt | Crime Reports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A holiday cruise ended with a one way ticket to Louisville and Metro Corrections for a man who owes thousands of dollars in child support.

Dominic Weaver has been on the run for more than 10 years. He had just ended a vacation and was exiting a cruise ship in Miami, Florida when he was taken into custody.

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell said Weaver has been on the run from child support for several years.

“I don’t know when he left, but he fled the jurisdiction, and from the date of his sentence until today, and even today, he’s not paid one cent of child support,” O’Connell said.

But last week, Weaver was taken into custody in Florida.

“He was found, fortunately, but this is the interesting part by the Miami Police getting off a cruise ship last week in Miami,” O’Connell said.

Detectives from the child support division recently flew to Miami, brought Weaver to Louisville and locked him up at the jail in downtown Louisville.

“This is one of the most egregious events that brings something to light that I think I’ve ever seen,” O’Connell said.

O’Connell said Weaver has a total of four cases with the child support division.

“Two more of those are ready for indictment again of more felonies,” O’Connell said.

He owes more than a $100,000 in back child support.

    “I think it’s somewhere in the 114 to $120,000,” O’Connell said.

According to the county attorney’s office, in 2021, Weaver owed more than $99,000 in support and has several years in prison hanging over his head.

“I’m going to ask the court at the next opportunity to revoke his sentence and sentencing to four years in the state penitentiary for this offense,” O’Connell said.

For years, O’Connell’s office posted the names of delinquent parents in the local newspaper. These days, the approach is different, but doesn’t always work.

“Our office does everything we can to work with people that have this obligation,” O’Connell said. “I mean everything we can, you know, to the extent of even helping find employment and do things like that.”

Weaver is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 6, 2025.

Louisville man arrested leaving cruise ship after 10 years on the run for child support debt

A Louisville man’s decade-long evasion of child support payments came to an abrupt end when he was arrested while disembarking from a cruise ship in Miami.

The man, who had been on the run for 10 years, owed a substantial amount in unpaid child support and had been avoiding detection by constantly moving and using false identities. However, authorities were finally able to track him down and apprehend him as he tried to leave the country.

This arrest serves as a reminder that individuals who neglect their financial responsibilities towards their children will eventually face consequences for their actions. It also highlights the determination and persistence of law enforcement in pursuing individuals who try to evade their obligations.

The man is now facing charges related to his outstanding child support debt and will be held accountable for his actions. This case serves as a warning to others who may be considering similar actions – you can run, but you can’t hide forever. Justice will catch up to you eventually.
