  • Gonzaga women pull away late for 69-58 win over Loyola Marymount, Zags’ fifth straight

It took 3½ quarters Saturday afternoon before the Gonzaga women’s basketball team finally found its rhythm. And for those 3½ quarters, the Loyola Marymount Lions didn’t look like a winless West Coast Conference team.

The Lions went through a late scoring drought, however, and Gonzaga took advantage, pulling away for a 69-58 victory at Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles.

“It wasn’t going great, it wasn’t easy, but we were able to grind it out until the end when we started to get the stops that we needed,” Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier said.

The win keeps Gonzaga tied for first place.

The Zags moved to 12-8 overall with their fifth consecutive win, 7-2 in WCC and knotted with Washington State, which got a measure of redemption with a 74-47 thumping of Santa Clara. The Cougars fell to Santa Clara 68-62 two weeks ago.

It was Gonzaga’s 34th consecutive win over Loyola Marymount.

The Zags used a superb day from freshman point guard Allie Turner, who finished with a career-best 23 points – the most by any GU freshman since Courtney Vandersloot had 20.

Turner, who made 9 of 18 shots from the field and 5 of 10 from 3-point range, added eight rebounds and five assists against one turnover. She has 57 made 3-pointers, most among all freshmen in the nation.

“She was confident, she was composed, she’s been handling a lot of pressure,” Fortier said of Turner. “She was ready to shoot it when we needed her to shoot it. When she was open, she let it fly. She took really good care of the ball.”

LMU point guard Naudia Evans, who hurt the Zags often, completed a three-point play to knot the score at 51 with 7 minutes, 42 seconds remaining.

That’s when the Lions went into a scoring funk and the Zags took over.

GU’s Esther Little scored down low off a nice feed from Yvonne Ejim, Claire O’Connor hit a 3-pointer and Turner made a driving basket to push Gonzaga ahead 58-53.

Little got another basket followed by Ejim’s three-point play and Gonzaga’s lead widened to 63-53 with 1 :52 left.

Two free throws and a basket from Ejim secured the victory.

“The key to shaking (LMU) was getting the stops that we needed,” Fortier said. “Their point guard (Evans) had a great game.

“We continued to battle on offense. Once we were able to keep her in front of us and not let her get any easy looks, we were able to change it.”

Ejim hit another career milestone, becoming the Zags’ all-time leading rebounder after becoming the all-time leader in made field goals on Thursday. She had eight rebounds, pushing her career mark to 985.

Ejim jumped past Kay Koppelman, who had 983 rebounds from 1987-91.

Ejim also reached double figures for the 62nd straight game.

She scored 19 points, moving to second in all-time Zags scoring behind Heather Bowman. Ejim vaulted past Vandersloot and has 2,074 points. Bowman had 2,165.

Little finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and two assists.

The Zags played a second straight game without graduate forward Maud Huijbens, who didn’t make the trip because she’s in concussion protocol.

Gonzaga played to the level of a winless conference opponent in the first half. And the Bulldogs didn’t defend the Lions’ lone offensive threat, Evans.

The Zags led 27-17 after Turner opened the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers. It was all Loyola Marymount (6-9, 0-7) thereafter in the quarter.

The Lions used a 7-0 surge to pull within 27-24, and Evans pulled them even when at 32 she hit a 3-pointer from the top of the arc at the buzzer to end the first half.

Gonzaga is off until Saturday, when it travels to Pepperdine.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to get Maud (Huijbens) back and ready and get a little bit of rest and recover,” Fortier said.

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team continued their winning streak with a 69-58 victory over Loyola Marymount. The Zags pulled away late in the game to secure their fifth straight win. The team showed great resilience and determination, dominating on both ends of the court. Congratulations to the Gonzaga women for another impressive performance! #GoZags #WinningStreak

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Atlantic 10 matchup on schedule as the Dayton Flyers and the Loyola Chi. Ramblers are set to tip at 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at University of Dayton Arena. The Flyers are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 75.3 points per game this season.

Loyola Chi. is facing Dayton at the wrong time: Dayton suffered their first home loss of the season on Wednesday and they’re likely out for redemption. They fell 67-59 to the Patriots. The Flyers just can’t catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.

Despite their defeat, Dayton saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Nate Santos, who earned 20 points, was perhaps the best of all. Malachi Smith was another key player, going 6 for 11 en route to 14 points plus five assists.

Meanwhile, there’s no place like home for Loyola Chi., who bounced back after a tough loss on the road on Saturday. They managed an 81-77 victory over Rhode Island on Wednesday.

Loyola Chi.’s win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Des Watson, who went 8 for 13 en route to 21 points plus two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jalen Quinn, who scored 17 points along with five assists and two steals.

Dayton’s loss ended a 22-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 11-6. As for Loyola Chi., their victory bumped their record up to an identical 11-6.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Dayton hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 75.3 points per game. However, it’s not like Loyola Chi. struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 75.6. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Looking forward, Dayton is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 9.5 points. This contest might not be the best time to bet them against the spread since they’ve let bettors down the last six times they’ve played.

    Odds

Dayton is a big 9.5-point favorite against Loyola Chi., according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 9.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 142.5 points.

  • What to know about Saturday’s game against Loyola Chicago

Dayton (11-6, 1-3) has rekindled memories of the Brian Gregory years with three straight losses in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Three times during Gregory’s tenure as coach, Dayton squandered strong non-conference performances with sub-par play in league games, settling for NIT bids in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Dayton faced a similar situation in coach Archie Miller’s third season. The Flyers started 1-5 in A-10 play that season but then won nine of their last 10 games to secure a NCAA tournament berth. That’s the season everyone points to any time Dayton struggles in A-10 play, but anyone watching the current Flyers will find it hard to imagine a repeat of that turnaround.

Dayton hit rock bottom in 2014 with a 60-57 loss to Saint Joseph’s at UD Arena on Jan. 29. Langston Galloway made a bank-shot 3-pointer to beat the Flyers with 1.8 seconds to play.

“Nobody’s boo-hooing,” Miller said after the game. “Nobody’s crying. We’ve just got to continue to work to get better. We’ll climb our way out of it.”

Continuing to work also was a theme of current Dayton coach Anthony Grant’s press conference Wednesday after a 67-59 loss to George Mason.

“There are 14 games left,” Grant said. “Each game has a life of its own. We’ve got to make sure that we don’t get caught up in the noise or get caught up in necessarily the disappointment of the results.”

The noise is the criticism being directed at the Flyers. There were scattered boos at the game Saturday but nothing overwhelming. It’s a different story online, where fans are venting their frustrations about a sweet season that has turned sour.

Grant doesn’t have a problem tuning out the noise and said his players are used to it in some ways.

“Obviously, it goes both ways,” Grant said. “You can’t always believe the praise, and you can’t always believe the criticism. It depends on where it’s coming from. I think we’re in a day and age where young people are kind of in some ways immune to it because they live in that world, so to speak.”

Dayton doesn’t have to wait long for a chance to break the three-game skid. It plays Loyola Chicago (11-6, 2-2) at 4 p.m. Saturday at UD Arena. Here are 10 things to know about the game:

    1. Series history: Dayton leads the series 35-16. Dayton has won two of the three games since Loyola joined the A-10 in the 2022-23 season.

Last season, Dayton lost 77-72 at Loyola. Dayton committed a season-high 22 turnovers. Loyola scored 20 points off those turnovers.

In 2023, Dayton beat Loyola 85-81 in overtime at UD Arena and then won 65-49 at Loyola. Those were the first two meetings between the programs since 1993. The first game took place in the 1928-29 season.

    2. Losing streak: Dayton will try to avoid its first four-game losing streak in A-10 play since January 2014 when a team that would reach the Elite Eight that March lost to Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth, Rhode Island and Saint Joseph’s.

Dayton also has not lost two straight A-10 games at home — with no road games in between — since 2012 when it lost to Rhode Island and Duquesne in a five-day stretch.

    3. State of the program: Loyola Chicago improved from 10-21 overall and 4-14 in the A-10 in its first season to 23-10 and 15-3 last season. It shared the regular-season title with Richmond in 2024.

After reaching the NCAA tournament three times in its last five seasons in the Missouri Valley Conference, it has not made the tournament the last two seasons. Coach Drew Valentine is 69-45 in his fourth season. His team was picked to finish fifth this season in the A-10 preseason poll.

    4. Standings update: Dayton sits alone in 14th place as one of only two teams that hasn’t won at least two games. Fordham (8-10, 0-5) is the only team without an A-10 victory.

Loyola Chicago is one of five teams tied for sixth place with a 2-2 mark. George Mason (4-1) sits alone in first place with a half-game lead over Virginia Commonwealth, Saint Louis and Duquesne (all 3-1).

    5. Season summary: Loyola started the season 8-0 but beat only one team ranked in the top 150 of the NCAA Evaluation Tool in that stretch, No. 119 Princeton. It then lost four of its last five non-conference games.

Loyola opened A-10 play with an 84-65 loss at home to Virginia Commonwealth. It then won 79-68 at La Salle and lost 93-57 at Saint Joseph’s. In its last game Wednesday, it beat Rhode Island 81-77 in Chicago.

“The guys made a decision tonight to do whatever it takes to win,” Valentine said in his postgame press conference. “I have to give them credit. A lot of guys stepped up when our usual suspects couldn’t get hot.”

    6. Roster losses: Three of Loyola’s top four scorers played their final seasons of college basketball last season: Philip Alston (12.6 points per game); Braden Norris (9.2); and Dame Adelekun (9.1).

Loyola also lost one key player earlier this season. Justin Moore, who averaged 7.7 points and a team-best 5.3 assists in the first nine games, suffered a season-ending knee injury in December.

    7. Top returners: Desmond Watson, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, led Loyola in scoring last season (12.6 points per game) and leads the team again this season (12.2). He played his first two seasons at Davidson. He scored 24 points against Dayton last season.

    • Sheldon Edwards, a 6-4, fifth-year guard, averaged 6.0 points last season and ranks second on the team in scoring this season (12.1).

    • Jayden Dawson, a 6-4 junior guard, has increased his scoring average from 7.9 to 12.0 this season.

    8. Top newcomer: Francis Nwaokorie, a 6-7 senior forward, averages 6.7 points and leads the team in rebounding (5.9). He played the last three seasons at UC San Diego.

    9. Strengths and weaknesses: Loyola has shot 36.9% from 3-point range in A-10 play. That’s the fifth-best mark in the A-10. Dayton ranks ninth (32.1).

    • A-10 opponents have an effective field-goal percentage of 56.4 against Loyola. That’s the worst mark in the conference. Dayton ranks 11th (56.4).

    10. Odds & Ends: KenPom.com gives Dayton an 84% chance of winning and predicts a 78-67 score. Dayton ranks 58th in the Pomeroy ratings. Loyola is No. 146.

    • Dayton ranks 64th in the NCAA Evaluation Tool. It is the second highest-ranked A-10 team behind No. 59 VCU. No. 159 Loyola is the 12th highest-ranked A-10 team.

This is a Quad 3 game for Dayton and a Quad 1 game for Loyola.

    Dayton is 2-3 in Quad 1 games, 1-1 in Quad 2, 3-2 in Quad 3 and 4-0 in Quad 4. Loyola is 0-0 in Quad 1, 1-3 in Quad 2, 2-3 in Quad 3 and 7-0 in Quad 4.

    #TRENDING

Nate Santos was named First Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 after being named to the third team after last season.

    • Santos’ 6-for-6 shooting performance from deep against Lehigh is the second-best in D-I.  It is also the second-best ever at UD, behind Shawn Haugh’s 8-for-8 in 1993-94.

Posh Alexander was named Second Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 and to the Preseason All-Defensive Team.  Alexander is a fifth-year transfer who already has 1,000 career points and 500 career assists (1,439 and 588 respectively).  The fourth recruit from New York City in Anthony Grant‘s tenure at UD, he led the Big East in steals in each of the last four seasons (three at St. John’s and one at Butler).

Enoch Cheeks was also named A-10 Preseason All-Defensive Team.  He led the team in steals (40), was second in blocked shots (21), and was third in rebounding (4.7) in his first season at UD after transferring from Robert Morris.  The Providence, R.I. native was the 2023-24 winner of UD’s Steve McElvene Award.  Cheeks was consistently assigned the opponents’ top perimeter player on defense.  In the 25 games (out of 33) where the Flyer foe’s top player was a guard or wing, that player was held under his average 17 times. He started in all 33 games and averaged 8.1 points per game (9.5 in A-10 play).

    • The Dayton roster includes five players who have earned all-conference recognition in their past – junior forward Nate Santos (Atlantic 10), junior Enoch Cheeks (Horizon League). junior Javon Bennett (Northeast Conference), redshirt junior Malachi Smith (Atlantic 10) and fifth-year senior Posh Alexander (Big East).

    • Amaël L’Etang was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25.  He scored 11 points (4-6 FG) in 13 minutes against New Mexico State.

    • Cheeks was named the A-10 Player of the Week on Dec. 2 after averaging 15.7 points and 7.0 rebounds against North Carolina, Iowa State and UConn in Maui.

    • Cheeks is 12th in the A-10 in rebounding (7.1) and sixth in steals (1.8).  Of the top 12 A-10 rebounders, Cheeks is the shortest by three inches.

    • Smith is second in the A-10 in assists (5.6) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.6)

Zed Key is seventh in FG% (.596, 59-99).  He is tied for 10th in D-I for most dunks (34).

    • As a team, Dayton is second in the Atlantic 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.69) and is tied for third in FG% (.470, 441-939).

    • This is the Flyers’ 30th season in the Atlantic 10.

    • UD ranked 20th in average attendance in NCAA Division I last season, averaging a capacity crowd of 13,407 fans a game in 2023-24.  Of schools in the top 25 in attendance, only Kansas, Purdue, Michigan State and UConn also sold out every game of the season.

    • Dayton has already announced it has sold out every game for the upcoming 2024-25 season, including both exhibition games that have already been played.  This will be the fourth consecutive year UD has sold out every home game.  That streak is now 68 games.

    • This is also the 55th anniversary season of UD Arena.  The Arena underwent a $76.2 million transformation project that was completed in time for the 2019-20 season.

    • The Flyers are wearing “DJD” on their left shoulder strap in memory of Don Donoher.  Coach Donoher died last April at the age of 92.  He was the first man to coach his alma mater in the NCAA tournament after appearing in it as a player.  A member of the NABC College Basketball Hall of Fame, he is Dayton’s all-time winningest coach (437 wins).  He was the 2017 winner of the USBWA’s Dean Smith Award.

    Who’s Playing

Loyola Maryland Greyhounds @ Holy Cross Crusaders

Current Records: Loyola Maryland 5-6, Holy Cross 8-5

    How To Watch

    What to Know

Holy Cross is preparing for their first Patriot League matchup of the season on Thursday. They and the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds will face off at 6:00 p.m. ET at Hart Center Arena. The Crusaders have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they’ve increased their point totals each of their last three games.

Holy Cross’ season wasn’t pretty last year but it’s starting to look like struggles are in the rearview. Couldn’t have asked for a better way to wrap up 2024 than the 82-46 stomp they got against Regis College.

Holy Cross was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. That’s a new trend for them: they were averaging 10.8 assists per game earlier this season, but in their last five contests they’ve averaged 15.8.

Meanwhile, Loyola Maryland was no doubt aware that the odds were against they in their game with DePaul but that awareness did nothing to prevent the predicted outcome. Loyola Maryland found themselves the reluctant recipients of an 84-65 punch to the gut against DePaul on Saturday. The Greyhounds have now taken an ‘L’ in back-to-back games.

Loyola Maryland’s loss came about despite a quality game from Jacob Theodosiou, who went 9 for 10 en route to 22 points. Theodosiou had some trouble finding his footing against Hampton two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction.

Holy Cross is on a roll lately: they’ve won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. As for Loyola Maryland, they now have a losing record at 5-6.

Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday’s matchup: Holy Cross has been dynamite from deep this season, having drained 39.6% of their threes per game. It’s a different story for Loyola Maryland, though, as they’ve only made 29.5% of their threes this season. Given Holy Cross’ sizable advantage in that area, Loyola Maryland will need to find a way to close that gap.

Going forward, Holy Cross is expected to win a tight contest, barring any buzzer beaters. This will be their first time playing as the favorites at home this season.

    Odds

Holy Cross is a slight 2.5-point favorite against Loyola Maryland, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 2.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 140.5 points.
