Lucy Lawless Begged Lorne Michaels to Cut Her Stevie Nicks SNL Sketch
If Lucy Lawless had had her way, her cult favorite impersonation of Stevie Nicks may never have happened.
On the latest episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, the host asked Lawless, 56, about her 1998 appearance on Saturday Night Live. Specifically, Rosenbaum wanted to know all about “Stevie Nicks’ Fajita Roundup,” a sketch in which the Xena: Warrior Princess star spoofed Nicks in a commercial for the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman’s imaginary Sedona, Ariz., Tex-Mex restaurant.
“I’d seen Stevie Nicks on something,” Lawless told Rosenbaum. “She had really black eyes for whatever reason. And I asked them for these — ‘Can I have contacts like that?’ And they got me fitted real quick and then bunged these things in to do the skit. And I couldn’t see anybody, and I was really alone in my head.”

At the time, Nicks was experiencing a career resurgence, thanks to Fleetwood Mac’s 1997 live reunion album The Dance and an accompanying MTV special, as well as her own solo career spanning 1998 box set Enchanted.
In 2020, former SNL writer Hugh Fink explained to The Ringer that the “Fajita Roundup” sketch was meant to play up the singer’s witchy, hippie vibe — complete with a tambourine and a wind machine blowing Lawless’ blond wig in the fake commercial — while also lampooning what a ’70s rock super star might be doing two decades after their heyday.
But, Lawless told Rosenbaum, despite having been a fan of Nicks’s music as a kid, she wasn’t initially sold on the bizarre sketch.
“I’ve got these stupid contacts in right? And I did not think the skit was funny,” she said. “I didn’t understand the cultural references. So maybe that was the magic ingredient is that I didn’t think it was funny.”
In fact, she was so uncertain about the sketch, she actually asked SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels to cut it.

“I said to Lorne, ‘Lorne, dude, you know, it’s not funny. Please cut it,’ ” she recalled. “He said, ‘No. No, I think it’s a sleeper hit.’ ”

It turns out Michaels was right. While “Stevie Nicks’ Fajita Roundup” is far from one of SNL’s most famous, it continues to show up on social media to this day. Ahead of Nicks’ October 2024 appearance on SNL — her first since 1983 — more than one fan took to social media hoping that either the singer or host Ariana Grande would revive the sketch.
For her part, Nicks loved the sketch. According to The Ringer, the “Rhiannon” singer told Madison magazine in 2011 that it was “one of my all-time favorite things ever.”
“When everybody told me, I was like, ‘Oh no, it’s going to be just awful …,’ ” Nicks said. “But it wasn’t. Lucy looked amazing, and she was amazing as me. So I could not have been happier.”
Lucy Lawless, best known for her role as Xena: Warrior Princess, recently revealed that she begged Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels to cut her Stevie Nicks sketch from the show.In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lawless admitted that she was nervous about portraying the iconic singer on live television. “I’m a huge fan of Stevie Nicks and I didn’t want to do her any disservice,” Lawless explained.
Despite her reservations, Lawless went through with the sketch, but immediately regretted it. “I was so worried that I wasn’t doing Stevie justice,” Lawless said. “I begged Lorne Michaels to cut the sketch, but he insisted that it was fine.”
Lawless’s performance as Stevie Nicks may not have been her favorite, but fans of the show still enjoyed seeing her take on the legendary singer. And while Lawless may have been critical of her own performance, it’s clear that she put in the effort to do justice to the rock icon.
Even though Lawless may have had doubts about her portrayal, it’s clear that her dedication to the role was evident in her performance. And while she may have wanted the sketch to be cut, fans will always remember her as the fierce warrior princess who took on Stevie Nicks on the SNL stage.

Lucy Dacus Announces First Solo Album in Four Years and National Tour
Following the breakout success of Boygenius in 2023, and its three members laying relatively low in 2024, Lucy Dacus is the first member of the trio to officially announce a solo album, her first since 2021’s acclaimed “Home Video.” Her fourth full-length effort on her own, “Forever Is a Feeling,” will be out on the Geffen label March 28, and will be followed by a monthlong national tour in April and May.
The first video promoting the project, for the single “Ankles,” is out today. It has Dacus creating some minor havoc on the streets and subways of Paris in a florid red gown, accompanied by actor-model Havana Rose Lui, portrayed a security guard whose real function becomes apparent in the video’s final scene.
“Forever Is a Feeling” will sport an all-star guest list, with the other two members of Boygenius, Phoebe Bridgers and Julian Baker, in tow, along with Hozier, Madison Cunningham, Blake Mills, Bartees Strange, Jake Finch, Collin Pastore and Melina Duderte.
The 13-city Forever Is A Feeling Tour will begin April 16 at the Met in Philadelphia and wrap up May 14 at the Greek in Los Angeles. Other stops include shows April 23 at Radio City Music Hall, April 29 at the Ryman in Nashville and May 12 at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
Katie Gavin, the lead singer of Muna, will open the shows, along with Jasmine.4.t. Presale opportunities begin Jan. 21 and the official public on-sale is Jan. 24. A sign-up for presale ticket access begins today at lucydac.us.
The 13 dates in April and May follow on the heels of four shows Dacus had already announced and sold out for February, which are at more intimate locations and are billed as “An Evening With Lucy Dacus.” It’s expected that she will be premiering more of the new material there, even though those Feb. 18-24 concerts pre-date the release of “Forever Is a Feeling” by more than a month.
A painting of Dacus figures into the narrative of the “Ankles” music video. A different painting of the singer appears on the new album cover, painted by the artist Will St. John, portrayed Dacus with the title emblazoned across her chest.
An announcement for the forthcoming release promises that “the lushness of the album’s sound is matched by a new frankness in Dacus’s approach to sexuality and romance… The sex in ‘Ankles‘ remains fantasy — as in many of the songs, love doesn’t come easy, desire has to be resisted — but the willingness to talk about it shows a new forthrightness, a new and brave willingness to express desire.
“I got kicked in the head with emotions,” Dacus says in the press announcement, describing writing the songs in 2022-24.. “Falling in love, falling out of love… You have to destroy things in order to create things. And I did destroy a really beautiful life.”
Among Boygenius members, Julien Baker is also expected to come back out of the gate soon with a full-length country-flavored album recorded as a collaboration with Torres; a single has already been released. Phoebe Bridgers has not yet released or announced any new music.

Saturday Night Live‘s Christmas episode recreated a Christmas classic — with a twist (and a cameo by Lucy Liu).
In a cut-for-time sketch, host Martin Short transformed into the Grinch for a retelling of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas. The story stayed on track until the Grinch, whose heart grew three sizes, went up the ladder to help Cindy Lou Who put a big star on top of Whoville’s Christmas tree.
However, he dropped it, and one gruesome accident led to another, with the Grinch inadvertently killing Cindy Lou’s parents, among others. Upset, she called upon her sister, Lucy Liu Who.
Channeling her character O-Ren Ishii from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, Liu pulled a sword and exacted revenge on the Grinch — Tarantino style.
In the end, the video is revealed as to be a trailer for “Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Grinch.” You can watch it above.
Lucy Liu In ‘Kill Bill’: Quentin Tarantino’s Take On ‘The Grinch’Quentin Tarantino is known for his unique and often controversial take on classic stories, and his latest project is no exception. The acclaimed director has announced that he will be reimagining the beloved children’s tale, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” with a dark and gritty twist.
In this new version of the story, Lucy Liu will take on the role of the Grinch, a bitter and vengeful creature who despises the holiday season and will stop at nothing to ruin Christmas for the residents of Whoville. Liu’s portrayal promises to bring a new level of complexity and depth to the character, exploring the darker motivations behind the Grinch’s actions.
Fans of Tarantino’s work can expect his signature style to be present throughout the film, with plenty of violence, dark humor, and stylish cinematography. The director has also hinted at some unexpected plot twists and surprises that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
With Lucy Liu in the lead role and Quentin Tarantino at the helm, this reimagining of “The Grinch” is sure to be a must-see for fans of both the original story and the director’s unique cinematic vision. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!

The Rookie’s return is just around the corner and season 7 is bringing more drama, more baddies and more steamy scenes with Chenford!
In Us Weekly’s exclusive first look at the official season 7 trailer, it’s clear that the LAPD has its hands full now that two criminals have escaped — one being Officer John Nolan’s (Nathan Fillion) wife, Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan), ex-husband, Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee).
“These are violent criminals so they’re not going to go down easy,” Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) teases in the trailer before scenes of the LAPD taking down one bad guy after the other flash across the screen.
After Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) tells the precinct that both Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) and Jason are still “at large,” Nolan begins to worry about Bailey’s safety.
Disney/Mike Taing “Jason’s escape puts my wife’s life in danger,” Nolan says after his spouse admits, “There’s a lot I haven’t told you about Jason.”
In a pivotal scene, paramedic/firefighter Bailey gets out of her rig and appears to come face to face with Jason, who looks like he might run her over with his car.
“Being a cop is stressful, 24/7,” Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) says as action-packed moments continue to play out in the background. “In this job we have to separate from the personal. It’s the hardest thing we have to do.”
Suspense, action and fear aren’t the only emotions viewers will feel this season. There appear to be some light-hearted moments as well, as Nolan “commandeers” a scooter to apprehend a suspect.
Disney/Ser Baffo “How the hell did you get here before me?” his partner Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) asks him when she arrives after Nolan on scene. “Work harder not smarter,” he says while huffing and puffing over the pursuit.
Plus, Lucy and Tim (otherwise known as Chenford) engage in a playful game of who can train the better rookie, hinting that their icy exchanges to end season 6 are finally over.
The twosome, who previously dated, also have a very steamy moment together, giving fans even more hope that they’ll get back together.
“We shouldn’t,” Lucy tells Tim as he stands shirtless in front of her in one scene. “I know,” Tim replies. The pair then lean in closer before the camera pans away.
Disney/Mike Taing “Every year on the job is different. Every case is different. You never really stop being a rookie,” Harper teases.
Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) ominously warns, “Because if we lose control, bad things happen.”
Season 7 of The Rookie premieres on ABC Tuesday, January 7, at 10 p.m. ET.

Nolan Back at Work, Tim and Lucy
The officers of The Rookie are ready to leap into action when the ABC drama returns with its seventh season on January 7.
In the Season 7 premiere, titled “The Shot,” Nolan (Nathan Fillion) is now recovering from a gunshot wound and feeling the effects of his age as the team welcomes two new rookies (Deric Augustine’s Miles and Patrick Keleher’s Seth). Together, they continue the hunt for two dangerous inmates with very personal vendettas — Oscar (Matthew Glave) and Jason (Steve Kazee) — following their prison escape. ABC has released photos offering a look at the officers on the job, the two new rookies, and more. Check them out below.
As executive producer Alexi Hawley previously told TV Insider, a few weeks have passed between seasons. That gives Nolan enough time to have healed and return to work, “although whether he’s fully ready is part of the storytelling in Episode 1,” said Hawley, adding that “we won’t find resolution right away (although there will be some false alarms along the way),” when it comes to those missing fugitives.
“We definitely came into this season determined to keep moving forward, telling new stories, shaking things up where we could, while keeping the show as fun to watch as ever,” Hawley added.
What about when it comes to moving forward with exes Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil)? “By the end of last season, Tim and Lucy had worked through a lot of the emotional damage Tim caused by blowing up their relationship,” shared Hawley. “It was important to us to come into Season 7 with a sense of positivity, of them having gotten to a place where the old dynamics could start to kick back in — while they try and navigate whether there’s a way back to what they had.” It looks like we might get a taste of that in the new images.
Scroll down to check out photos from the Season 7 premiere, then let us know in the comments section what you’re hoping to see.
