  • Australian Open: Iga Swiatek v Eva Lys, Alex de Minaur v Alex Michelsen – live text and radio commentary

‘Let’s go for bigger and better things’published at 11:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Michelsen 0-6 6-7 (5-7) 3-6 De Minaur

    Ryan Harrison
Former American tennis player on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds

Alex de Minaur speaking on court about reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time: “It means the world. I love you guys too, so much. There is nothing that I want to do more than play well here, in Australia, in front of you guys. I’m glad I finally made it to the quarter-finals here, so let’s go for bigger and better things. Come on!”

On whether getting engaged is lifting his performances on court: “I don’t believe in coincidences. I think that when you are happy off the court, then you play some good tennis on the court.”

On taking the first set 6-0 and pushing back on Alex Michelsen’s resistance: “I had my opportunities in the second set to maybe run away with that one as well and not let him inside the match, but I wasn’t able to close it out. He obviously raised his level and then it made it a tough match. That second set was pivotal so I’m extremely happy I was able to bounce back after that second set break – it was massive. Let’s keep it going.”

On what he has been working on to break into the top 10: “My whole career has been day-by-day, it hasn’t been overnight. I’ve had to keep improving every year, in little increments, to get a little bit stronger and bigger. I’ve been working on getting more free points on my serve and a little bit more confidence. Consistency always pays off in the end.”

On facing Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals: “I did get to watch his match today. It was an interesting one – that’s for sure. I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be an incredibly tough match and I’m going to have to do something I haven’t done before, but why not start here!”

First up, we have the clash between Iga Swiatek and Eva Lys in the women’s singles. Swiatek, the reigning French Open champion, has been in top form so far in the tournament and will be looking to continue her winning streak. Lys, on the other hand, has been a surprise package and will be looking to cause an upset.

In the men’s singles, we have Alex de Minaur taking on Alex Michelsen. De Minaur, the young Australian star, has been impressive in his matches and will be looking to make it to the semi-finals. Michelsen, a rising star from Denmark, will be looking to make a name for himself by defeating the higher-ranked de Minaur.

    Ryan Harrison
Former American tennis player on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds

If I’m in the coach’s corner for Alex Michelsen, it is about building momentum now.

Even if you aren’t able to turn this set around and get the break back, you just want to start making some headways, particularly on your own service game.

He has been serving and trying to hit aces, but Alex de Minaur has been all the way stretched out and getting those returns back. I would like to see Michelsen going a little bit more to the body and in the middle of the court, with a slightly different style.

The Australian Open is heating up as two exciting matches are set to take place today.

First up, we have Iga Swiatek facing off against Eva Lys in what promises to be an intense battle on the court. Swiatek, the reigning French Open champion, will be looking to continue her impressive form and advance further in the tournament. On the other hand, Lys will be eager to cause an upset and make a name for herself on the big stage.

Following that, we have a thrilling match between Alex de Minaur and Alex Michelsen. De Minaur, the Australian rising star, will be looking to make his mark in front of his home crowd and showcase his talent on the world stage. Michelsen, on the other hand, will be looking to pull off a surprise victory and advance in the tournament.

  • Iga Świątek zdeklasowała Evę Lys. Kolejny set do zera, Polka w ćwierćfinale

  • Swiatek sweeps past Lys into Australian Open quarterfinals

No.2 seed Iga Swiatek swept into the Australian Open quarterfinals for the second time with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of lucky loser Eva Lys in 59 minutes.

The five-time major champion has dropped just 11 games in four matches so far, seven of which were lost in the first round to Katerina Siniakova.

The Pole remains in contention to reclaim the World No.1 ranking from Aryna Sabalenka next Monday. Sabalenka will need to defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Tuesday’s quarterfinal in order to stay ahead of Swiatek. If Swiatek also wins her quarterfinal, Sabalenka will need to reach the final. If the pair meet in the final, the winner will walk away with the World No.1 ranking.

    More to come…

In a stunning display of skill and determination, Iga Swiatek swept past Elina Svitolina into the Australian Open quarterfinals. The young Polish player showed her dominance on the court, taking control of the match from the start and never letting up.

Swiatek’s powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes left Svitolina struggling to keep up, as she raced to a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The win marks Swiatek’s first appearance in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, and she will now face a tough opponent in the next round.

Fans of the sport are buzzing with excitement over Swiatek’s impressive performance, and many are already looking forward to seeing what she will bring to the court in the next round. With her talent and determination, Swiatek is definitely a player to watch in this year’s Australian Open.

  • Lys becomes first lucky loser to make Melbourne last 16

Germany’s Eva Lys has become the first lucky loser to make the last 16 at the Australian Open in the Open Era after defeating Jaqueline Cristian 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Australian Open: Scores | Schedule | Draws

The World No.128 fell in the final round of qualifying to Destanee Aiava, but was one of the four highest-ranked losers of that round. Those four players entered the pool from which lucky losers would be pulled, and Lys was drawn in third place.

She opted to delay her flight home and remain on site in case a spot opened. Ahead of her, Petra Martic had received the first lucky loser place on the day qualifying ended, and Harriet Dart received the second on Monday. On Tuesday, No.13 seed Anna Kalinskaya withdrew; Lys, who heard the news while on the physio table, had just 10 minutes to prepare for her first-round match. She promptly dismissed Kimberly Birrell 6-2, 6-2.

Four days later, Lys finds herself in the second week of a major for the first time, having never previously gone beyond the second round, and with a Top 100 debut guaranteed following the tournament. She’s just the sixth lucky loser to make the last 16 of a Grand Slam in the Open Era, following Hana Strachonova (Roland Garros 1980), Dana Gilbert (Roland Garros 1982), Nicole Muns-Jagerman (Roland Garros 1988), María José Gaidano (US Open 1993) and Elina Avanesyan (Roland Garros 2023). Strachonova’s run took her to the third round in a 64-player draw; the others all made the fourth round.

“It’s definitely an insane story, how fast it happened,” said Lys after defeating Cristian. “It’s been just a couple of days. Those days have totally changed my life … I feel like my lucky loser position definitely helps me. Sometimes you just need a second chance.”

The breakthrough is a long-awaited one for Lys. She has ended the past three seasons in the Top 130, but despite her evident ball-striking ability, was unable to get her ranking above No.105 — partly due to thinking about it too much.

“I was always struggling the closer I came to the Top 100, the closer I came to those big tournaments,” said Lys. “At the end of the day I know I have the level, but I was always putting too much pressure on myself. I always knew what’s at stake. I always wanted it so bad. That was also the reason why I could never actually go out and win.

“My first AO experience, I made it through qualies. I played [Cristina] Bucsa first round. I played so well first set. Second set, I had that realization where I knew how many points I would make, I knew what my ranking position would be. What do you think? I lost the second set 6-0. Sometimes my head is just way further than my game and my physical self.”

Lys’ physical self has also been something she’s struggled with. She has been hindered by spondyloarthritis, an immune condition with which she was diagnosed in 2020 and made public last March. It has affected her ability to train, schedule and sometimes complete matches over the years.

“I was unhappy that I couldn’t do as much or be as intense [as other players],” Lys said at Wimbledon last year. “One thing I learned is not to look at other players. If I hit a wall I need to listen to my body, and the most important thing for me is recovery.”

After winning consecutive three-setters, Lys feels she has it under control for now.

“I had two amazing matches,” she said. “In the third set I was there. In the third set I was playing my best tennis. So I’m definitely very happy how we managed to get my body to a more stable environment. … At the end of the day, this is always just a part of my life. I always have to watch out. I have to take care of my body. I have to eat well. I have to recover well for the body just to stay in shape.”

Lys’ next test will be one of the most challenging of this era on the Hologic WTA Tour: the formidable World No.2 Iga Swiatek, who has dropped just three games in her past two matches. It’s a bit of a throwback memory for Lys, who first played Swiatek in the second round of Stuttgart 2022 on her WTA main-draw debut.

Stuttgart: Swiatek extends winning streak to 20 over Lys

“Even then I had amazing rallies with her,” Lys recalled. “I lost 1 and 1. She had the streak going on, so she was playing really, really intense … Definitely really excited to play her. She’s an amazing player. I’m definitely waiting for matches like that. This is the reason why I play tennis.

“I also think I’m not going to get underestimated in Round 4. I see that I do have chances. I’m just going to try and play my best tennis. I think she definitely will have to work a little harder to get that win.”

First, though, Lys has a flight to reschedule — again. Last week, she had rescheduled it for Sunday on the basis that six days would be sufficiently far away. Instead, she’ll be preparing to battle for a place in the quarterfinals.

“It’s actually pretty funny,” said Lys. “I’m glad we have to change it now!”

In a surprising turn of events at the Australian Open, 22-year-old Lys has become the first lucky loser in history to make it to the last 16 in Melbourne. After losing in the final round of qualifying, Lys was given a second chance to compete in the main draw as a lucky loser when another player withdrew due to injury.

Despite the odds stacked against her, Lys has been on fire in the tournament, defeating higher-ranked opponents with her powerful serves and strategic play. Her remarkable run has captured the attention of tennis fans around the world, who are cheering her on as she continues to defy expectations.

With each match, Lys is proving that she belongs among the elite players on the tour. Her Cinderella story is a reminder that in sports, anything is possible with determination and belief in oneself.

As Lys prepares to take on her next opponent in the last 16, all eyes will be on her as she looks to continue her historic journey at the Australian Open. Stay tuned to see if she can keep the magic alive and make even more history in Melbourne.

  • Australian Open 2025: Lys v Swiatek, Michelsen v De Minaur to come – live | Australian Open 2025

    Key events

On Laver, Lys and Swiatek are out.

Meantime on Court, Gael Monfils, now 38, serves at 1-1 3-4 against Ben Shelton, but he’s hurt a leg and isn’t moving freely. He’s doing a decent job of hanging in there and holds for 4-4, but I’m not sure he can win from this position.

On Cain, Navarro rushed into an early lead but Kasatkina fought back and now serves at 4-5 in the first and, as I type, finds herself down 0-40; Kasatkina then flaps long, and the American takes a topsy-turvy, 41-minute first set 6-4.

    Preamble

G’day one and all and welcome to the Australian Open 2025 – day nine, evening sesh!

It’s as misty-moisty Monday morning – in north London, at least – but rich light emanates from Melbourne Park. It beginss with Eva Lys v Iga Swiatek, continues with Alex Michelsen v Alex de Minaur, and also takes in Gael Monfils v Ben Shelton and Daria Kasatkina v Emma Navarro.

  • Eva Lys is first ‘lucky loser’ to get to Australian Open fourth round

MELBOURNE, Australia — Less than a week ago, Germany’s Eva Lys was planning her flight out of Melbourne, having fallen at the final hurdle of qualifying for the Australian Open main draw, losing to local Destanee Aiava in the third and final round.

The 23-year-old world No. 128 was set to depart Melbourne with a nice pay packet; those who win through to the final round of qualifying take home AU$72,000 (US$44,500), enough to cover their travel and accommodation Down Under, and set themselves up for their next few tournaments.

But in a twist of fate, Lys will now walk away from the Australian Open with a “life-changing” amount of money, at least AU$420,000 (US$260,000) and nearly six times her qualifying pay packet, after she won through to the fourth round on Saturday in what is now easily her best return at a major.

How? Lys never got on the flight out of Australia. She stuck around in Melbourne until Tuesday, the last of three days of first-round action, on the off chance she’d become what’s called a “lucky loser” — a ticket into the main draw when someone withdraws before their first match, usually due to injury or illness.

Things were looking grim until she got a phone call Tuesday afternoon. Anna Kalinskaya, the 13th seed, had withdrawn from the tournament with a virus.

“I found out about Anna ten minutes before the match, so I didn’t have time to get nervous,” Lys said after her first-round win over Kimberley Birrell, 6-2, 6-2.

The wins just kept coming. Lys took down Varvara Gracheva in the second round in three hard-fought sets.

“I was always telling myself in the third set, ‘Listen, you could have been at home by now, but you’re on court. Try enjoying it, try making the best out of it,’” she said following that triumph.

And on Saturday, Lys beat Jacqueline Cristian in the third round, in doing so becoming the first lucky loser to advance this far at the Australian Open, and just the sixth lucky loser to make the Round of 16 at a major in the Open Era, along with Elina Avanesyan (2023 French Open), Maria Jose Gaidano (1993 US Open), Nicole Muns-Jagerman (1988 French Open), Dana Gilbert (1982 French Open), and Hana Strachonova (1980 French Open).

“Obviously I’m very, very happy to be making it to the second week, I feel like the second week was always such a dream for me,” Lys said after her third-round win. “It definitely doesn’t feel real for me right now. I don’t know when the realization will kick in. It’s definitely just an amazing situation to be in, especially knowing that I was lucky loser.”

Lys reflected on her week, describing how whirlwind it had been.

“I found a picture of me sleeping [at Melbourne Park] the day I got in [to the main draw]. I was just trying to spend the time at the venue, trying to do something because I didn’t really know what to do with my time. I was just preparing for my flight the next day,” she said.

“It’s definitely an insane story, also for me, how it happened, how fast it happened. It’s been just a couple of days. Those days have totally changed my life. So definitely really thankful.”

Lys will need to prepare to take on the No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek in the fourth round on Monday, but it’s not just her match that will require some mental energy; she admitted she had rebooked her flight out of Australia for before the start of the Round of 16 match, and she’ll have to move it again.

“We actually changed the flight to [Sunday],” she laughed. “Right now, I think after the press conference we’re going to go and try to change it a little bit further. It’s actually really funny. We just picked a date. We’re like, okay, Sunday is six days away. We’re just going to pick Sunday.”

If Lys can somehow upset Swiatek on Monday, she’ll pocket an even bigger paycheck of AU$665,000 (US$411,700), while the winners of the 2025 Australian Open will take home AU$3,500,000 (US$2,166,000).
