  • Former NFL agent shares what a Khalil Mack Chargers extension could look like


    The Los Angeles Chargers want to keep Khalil Mack this offseason and have the cap space necessary to keep him from leaving in free agency—provided he doesn’t retire, of course. 

    But will elite player and team agree on the numbers? 

    Mack, after all, will soon turn 34 years old and is still plenty productive, so he wouldn’t be out of band to expect a big, albeit short deal.

    The Chargers, on the other hand, could argue in the other direction. They still have a decision to make on Joey Bosa’s future and younger players like Tuli Tuipulotu waiting to take on bigger roles in the pass-rushing rotation. 

    So what could a Mack contract look like? Former sports agent Joel Corry offered this take on social media: 

    Additionally, Corry also mentioned that veteran names like Von Miller and Chandler Jones have sort of regressed the expectations that aging pass-rushers should get big deals. Miller, for example, is almost 36 years old and signed a six-year deal worth $120 million in 2022. It backfired—he posted eight sacks that year, zero in 2023 and just six this year. 

    If it shakes out that Mack’s market is around that $19 million annually range, one has to think the Chargers would be all over it, though, even with the risk that Father Time takes a chunk out of his production.

    However, Schefter has reported that Mack will indeed return for the 2025 season, putting to rest any doubts about his football future.

    Despite the Chargers’ disappointing end to the season and Mack’s struggles in the postseason—his fifth playoff loss in as many appearances—he is set to continue playing, making it clear that he’s not yet ready to walk away from the game.

    “It’s hard to say what’s next,” Mack said after the Texans’ loss. “I’ve got a lot of things on my mind right now, and I need to talk through them with my family. But I’m not rushing to make any decisions immediately after a tough loss. I want to spend time with my wife, my kids, and figure things out carefully before making a call.”

    At 33, Mack’s career has been marked by individual brilliance, including 39 tackles, six sacks, and nine passes defensed during the regular season.

    He also added two sacks in the playoff loss, maintaining his status as one of the most fearsome edge rushers in the NFL.

    Yet despite his stellar individual play, Mack has been unable to achieve team success in the postseason, with his Chargers failing to make a deep playoff run.     The NFL handed down fines to six players following the playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos last weekend.

    Notably, Bills wide receiver Mack Hollins received a $11,255 fine for taunting. Hollins was penalized after he made a catch and pushed Pat Surtain’s head and then stepped over the cornerback:

    Hollins received a second fine (also for taunting), bringing his total to $17,991. Elsewhere for the Bills, Reid Ferguson ($11,255) was fined for taunting, Damar Hamlin ($6,083) was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct and Taron Johnson ($14,305) was fined for unnecessary roughness.

    As for the Broncos, running back Javonte Williams ($45,020) received a big fine for unnecessary roughness (using his helmet) and linebacker Justin Strnad ($7,250) was also fined for unnecessary roughness. Williams’ received a big fine as a repeat offender.

    Williams ($45,020) now finishes as the team’s most-fined player from the 2024 season, followed by safety P.J. Locke ($41,916), defensive lineman Malcolm Roach ($36,579), safety Brandon Jones ($28,138), pass rusher Nik Bonitto ($17,582), Cooper ($12,668), cornerback Pat Surtain ($11,255), fullback Mike Burton ($7,653), Strnad ($7,250), center Luke Wattenberg ($5,872), tight end Lucas Krull ($5,083), running back Blake Watson ($4,463) and safety Devon Key ($4,417).

    The money the league receives from fines is “donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels,” per the NFL.
