  • Game Recap: Mackenzie Blackwood steals the show as Colorado Avalanche gets back on track against the New York Rangers

On their first game of this five-game home stand, the Colorado Avalanche won an overtime thriller against the New York Rangers by a final score of 3-2.

Let’s take a look at all the action from tonight!

    First Period

After both teams exchanged some chances early in this game, Colorado would be the one to get on the board first. This play initially started with Cale Makar taking the puck up high in the offensive zone. Makar would give the puck back down along the boards to Ross Colton from there. From there, Parker Kelly managed to find a soft spot in the middle of the ice, Colton was able to find him, and Kelly buried the puck past Igor Shesterkin.

Colorado’s powerplay woes would continue in this game, as they would surrender a short-handed goal to the Rangers. At the start of this sequence, Makar would start with the puck at the top of the zone and fanned on the puck. Sam Carrick then managed to spring himself for a breakaway after grabbing the puck and tied this game at one.

    Second Period

About halfway through the second period, the Rangers would manage to score the go-ahead goal. Adam Edstrom would make it 2-1 after New York would get a 2-on-1 break. After a faceoff in the Avs’ offensive zone, two Rangers players managed to get behind the Avs’ defense, and Edstrom would put the puck past Blackwood.

    Third Period

While it took almost the entire period, Colorado would manage to find the equalizer and send this game to overtime. With the goalie pulled, Colorado made good use of the man-advantage. Mikko Rantanen would walk into a one-timer from the top of the circles, and Artturi Lehkonen, who was camped right at the net front, would tie this game up and secure at least one point for the Avs.

    Overtime

With under a minute left in the overtime period, Devon Toews would send Colorado home with the win. After killing off a Rangers power play opportunity, the Avs would get some offensive zone time at the end of this overtime period. Logan O’Connor would start with the puck around the front of the net. After he wasn’t able to score, O’Connor fed the puck up to Nathan MacKinnon, who would set up Toews for the overtime winner.

    Takeaways

After a game against the Winnipeg Jets where the Avs were unable to solve a good goaltender in Connor Hellebyuck, it certainly feels good that Colorado was able to ultimately solve Igor Shesterkin tonight. And on the topic of good goaltending, what a performance from Mackenzie Blackwood. Without his play in net, Colorado probably doesn’t win this game, given how many breakaways and odd-man rushes the team in front of him gave up.

While the result is ultimately what matters, the process did not look pretty at times, especially on the powerplay. The Avs went 0-for-3 on the power play tonight and even went as far as to give up a short-handed goal. Something’s got to change on that front, and hopefully, it happens soon. No team can expect to survive off of goaltending play every single night and no production with the man advantage. Overall, after a disappointing three-game road trip, Colorado certainly got back on track here tonight.

    Upcoming

The Colorado Avalanche will continue its five-game home stand on Thursday, January 16, as they take on the Edmonton Oilers. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. MT for all to see on ESPN.

In a thrilling matchup against the New York Rangers, the Colorado Avalanche came out on top thanks to a standout performance from goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. The Avalanche, who had been struggling as of late, showed signs of getting back on track as they defeated the Rangers 4-2.

Blackwood was the star of the game, making a number of incredible saves to keep the Avalanche in the lead. His performance between the pipes was nothing short of spectacular, as he turned away shot after shot from the Rangers’ offense.

The Avalanche also got contributions from their offense, with goals from Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Andre Burakovsky, and Cale Makar. The team played with a renewed sense of energy and determination, showing that they are capable of competing with the best teams in the league.

Overall, it was a much-needed win for the Avalanche as they look to climb up the standings and secure a playoff spot. With Blackwood stealing the show and the offense firing on all cylinders, the team looks poised for a strong finish to the season.

Avalanche sign Mackenzie Blackwood to 5-year extension | Colorado Avalanche

SALT LAKE CITY — The Avalanche believe they’ve found their guy in net, and they weren’t about to let him test free agency.

The Avalanche on Friday announced they signed goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to a 5-year contract extension that will keep him in Colorado until 2030. As his current contract doesn’t expire until the end of this season, his new deal will kick in starting next year.

Mackenzie Blackwood puts on a show for Avalanche fans in Ball Arena debut

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Blackwood’s cap hit each season will come to $5.25 million, meaning the total contract comes out to $26.25 million. Colorado historically has not been an organization that commits long-term to goaltenders, so them handing out this contract is a strong indicator of how they feel about the 28-year-old netminder.

“When we acquired Mackenzie a few weeks ago, we wanted to let him get to Denver, get acclimated to his new team, new city and then in due time we’d reach out to him and his representatives,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said.  “We are thrilled to get this deal done now and have Mackenzie under contract for the next six years. As I said when we acquired him, we feel like Mackenzie has just gotten better and better every year and he has come in and done a great job with us in his first few starts.

“He’s a big body, athletic goaltender who is still young and still growing as a goaltender.  Stylistically, he has fit really well with how we play and has been a perfect fit in our dressing room as well.”

In four starts with the Avalanche, Blackwood has recorded a 3-1 record with a .931 save percentage. Even though he’s only been around for a couple of weeks, the decision to re-sign was pretty easy.

“Take a look around the room,” he said. “There’s a lot of players that are really good, good culture, good organization and they welcomed me very quickly. It’s a great opportunity for me. I’m happy to play here.”

Blackwood mentioned that getting some term on this deal was “huge” for him, as he had previously never signed a contract longer than 3 years. His new coach is just happy both sides were able to get a deal done.

“I think it’s great,” Jared Bednar said a few hours after the deal became official. “It’s nice to know that he’s going to be around and that our future in net is locked in with him. He’s played well since he’s been here and helped and help turn things around for us. Well deserved and really excited for him.”

With Blackwood signed, Colorado has its situation in net figured out through next season. Scott Wedgewood, whom they acquired at the end of November, is signed through the 2024-25 season. There are unconfirmed reports out of Russia that Colorado’s top goaltending prospect Ilya Nabokov is planning to come to North America next season and sign an NHL contract with the Avalanche.

The Denver Gazette reached out to Nabokov’s representation and were told that the 21-year-old hasn’t made any decisions regarding his future just yet. If Nabokov signs, the Blackwood contract would allow Nabokov to develop in the American Hockey League and get accustomed to the smaller ice in North America.

Blackwood and the Avalanche meet the Utah Hockey Club at 7:30 p.m. Friday (ESPN2).

The Colorado Avalanche have locked in their goaltender for the foreseeable future, as they announced the signing of Mackenzie Blackwood to a 5-year contract extension. Blackwood, who was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the New Jersey Devils last season, has quickly established himself as a reliable and talented netminder for the team.

The 24-year-old goalie has posted impressive numbers so far this season, with a .923 save percentage and a 2.50 goals against average. His strong play has been a key factor in the Avalanche’s success this season, as they currently sit near the top of the standings in the Western Conference.

With Blackwood now signed long-term, the Avalanche can have confidence in their goaltending moving forward. His combination of skill, athleticism, and poise in the crease make him a valuable asset for the team as they look to make a deep playoff run in the coming years.

Fans can look forward to seeing Blackwood guard the net for the Avalanche for years to come, as he continues to establish himself as one of the top goaltenders in the league.

Colorado Avalanche Breaking News: Mackenzie Blackwood signs five-year extension

    Merry late Christmas Avalanche fans!

The Colorado Avalanche gave fans a late gift with the signing of Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year extension. The 28-year-old netminder signed for an AAV of $5.25 million.

Blackwood has always been an underrated goaltender playing up to his potential on uncompetitive teams. Now signed long-term, he has a chance to prove himself on a competitive team.

Likewise, the Avs have finally invested in a goaltender and are giving him a solid look. Considering Colorado had two goaltenders under less AAV than Blackwood’s to start the season, it’s a considerate change of pace. The last goaltender to sign for three years or longer was Semyon Varlamov in 2013-14.

Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland said after acquiring Blackwood that he would not be a short-term rental, and this deal proves that. He will be in Colorado until the end of the 2029-30 season and have Scott Wedgwood alongside him through the end of next season, keeping the Lumberyard intact until then.

In Blackwood’s 219 games played, he has 84 wins, 11 shutouts, a 3.05 goals-against average, and a save percentage of .905. In just his four games in Colorado, he’s been a breath of fresh air with three wins in four games, a 2.03 goals-against average, and a save percentage of .931.

Looking forward, however, this does challenge things cap-wise. The Avs still need to re-sign Mikko Rantanen, who has been rumored to get around $14 million. Plus, you’ve got to worry about re-signing other players down the line such as Jonathan Drouin, Artturi Lehkonen, and Cale Makar. And finally, there’s the ever-present question mark of Gabriel Landeskog and whether or not he will return and have his cap hit impact the lineup.

Nonetheless, the Avalanche has its goaltender for the future. What do you think of the signing? Let us know in the comments below!

The Colorado Avalanche have made a major move to solidify their goaltending situation, as they have signed Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year contract extension. The deal is reportedly worth $25 million, locking up the 25-year-old netminder through the 2026-27 season.

Blackwood, who was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the New Jersey Devils last season, has quickly established himself as one of the top goaltenders in the league. In 44 games with Colorado, he has posted a 2.47 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, helping lead the team to the top of the standings in the Western Conference.

With this extension, the Avalanche have secured their goaltending future for the foreseeable future, as Blackwood will now be a key piece of their roster for the next five years. Fans can expect to see even more stellar performances from the young goaltender as he continues to develop and improve in the coming seasons.

Stay tuned for more updates on this breaking news story as it develops.

Avalanche sign Mackenzie Blackwood to 5-year extension

The Colorado Avalanche needed only four games to commit long term to goalie Mackenzie Blackwood.

The Avalanche announced Friday that they had signed Blackwood to a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2029-30 season. The contract carries an average annual value of $5.25 million against the salary cap, a source told ESPN. Blackwood is in the final season of a two-year contract worth $2.35 million against the cap.

Blackwood, 28, was acquired from San Jose on Dec. 9 in a multiplayer trade that saw Alexandar Georgiev, Colorado’s previous starting goalie, and 25-year-old forward Nikolai Kovalenko sent to the Sharks.

Blackwood is 3-1-0 in four starts for the Avalanche with a .931 save percentage and a 2.03 goals-against average. He is 84-92-25 in 219 career games over seven seasons with the New Jersey Devils, Sharks and Avalanche.

“When we acquired Mackenzie a few weeks ago, we wanted to let him get to Denver, get acclimated to his new team, new city and then in due time we’d reach out to him and his representatives,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a statement. “We are thrilled to get this deal done now and have Mackenzie under contract for the next six years.

“As I said when we acquired him, we feel like Mackenzie has just gotten better and better every year and he has come in and done a great job with us in his first few starts. He’s a big body, athletic goaltender who is still young and still growing as a goaltender. Stylistically, he has fit really well with how we play and has been a perfect fit in our dressing room as well.”

Colorado has dramatically reshaped its goaltending depth this season. The Avalanche started with a tandem of Georgiev and Justus Annunen before trading Georgiev to acquire Blackwood and dealing Annunen to the Nashville Predators for goalie Scott Wedgewood.

The Avalanche (21-15-0) are third in the Central Division.

The Avalanche have locked in their goaltender for the foreseeable future, signing Mackenzie Blackwood to a 5-year extension. The 25-year-old netminder has solidified himself as a key piece of the team’s core, and this contract ensures he will remain in Colorado for the long haul. Fans can expect to see Blackwood guarding the crease and making big saves for years to come. Let’s show some love for our goalie as he continues to shine between the pipes for the Avalanche! #GoAvsGo #BlackwoodSaves

Mackenzie Blackwood Signs Five-Year Extension With the Avalanche

The Avalanche have locked up their new No. 1 goalie.

Mackenzie Blackwood signed a five-year contract extension on Friday, keeping him with the team through the 2029-30 season. He’ll make $5.25 million per season according to Sportsnet’s NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.

Blackwood is 3-1-0 in four starts with the Avalanche since being acquired. He’s allowed just two goals in each game and has a sparkling .931 save percentage. Colorado scored just once in his lone loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

The Avs acquired Blackwood on Dec. 9 in a multi-piece trade with the San Jose Sharks. They sent goalie Alexandar Georgiev and forward Nikolai Kovalenko back the other way. Blackwood was brought in nine days after general manager Chris MacFarland traded for his former tandem teammate Scott Wedgewood from the Nashville Predators. He completely revamped Colorado’s goaltending in short order.

Wedgewood is under contract through 2025-26 carrying a cap hit of $1.5 million. The Avs’ goalies will eat up $6.75 million of their salary cap next season.

Blackwood, 28, was a pending unrestricted free agent and is playing out the tail end of a two-year deal worth $2.35 million per season. MacFarland said at the time of the trade that the team had envisioned Blackwood to be a long-term fit. Colorado has had four starting goalies in less than five full seasons.

This is their first long-term commitment to a goaltender since 2014.

“When we acquired Mackenzie a few weeks ago, we wanted to let him get to Denver, get acclimated to his new team, new city and then in due time we’d reach out to him and his representatives,” MacFarland said in a team press release. “We are thrilled to get this deal done now and have Mackenzie under contract for the next six years.”

The Avs started the season 0-4 and had an inconsistent first six weeks to the season. Their goaltending was at the center of the criticism because of their poor play. Both Justus Annunen and Georgiev struggled and ultimately lost the team’s trust. Colorado was ranked 32nd in October and 31 in November in save percentage.

“As I said when we acquired him, we feel like Mackenzie has just gotten better and better every year and he has come in and done a great job with us in his first few starts. He’s a big body, athletic goaltender who is still young and still growing as a goaltender,” MacFarland said. “Stylistically, he has fit really well with how we play and has been a perfect fit in our dressing room as well.”

Blackwood has not yet made a playoff appearance. He’s 84-92-25 in 204 starts, playing mostly for rebuilding teams outside of the playoff picture.

The Colorado Avalanche have locked in their goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood for the long haul, signing him to a five-year contract extension. The deal, reportedly worth $25 million, solidifies Blackwood as a key piece of the team’s future.

Blackwood, who was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the New Jersey Devils last season, has quickly established himself as a top-tier goalie in the league. In his first season with Colorado, he posted a 2.73 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, helping lead the team to a deep playoff run.

With Blackwood now signed long-term, the Avalanche can confidently build around their star netminder as they aim for a Stanley Cup championship. Fans can look forward to seeing Blackwood continue to stand tall between the pipes for years to come. #GoAvsGo #BlackwoodExtension

Avalanche sign goalie Mackenzie Blackwood to five-year extension

The Colorado Avalanche appear to have found someone they like after some serious turnaround between the pipes.

Colorado inked goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year contract extension after trading for him earlier this season, the team announced Friday.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the deal is worth $26.25 million, with a $5.25 million AAV.

The Avs acquired Blackwood on Dec. 9, sending Alexandar Georgiev to the San Jose Sharks in a goalie swap.

Blackwood was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The 28-year-old has provided a needed boost between the pipes for the Avs in the four games, helping them to a 3-1-0 record with a 2.00 goals-against average and .931 save percentage.

He had a 6-9-3 record with a 2.78 GAA and a .909 save percentage in 19 games with the Sharks before being traded.

In the deal for Blackwood, the Sharks also received forward Nikolai Kovalenko, a 2025 fifth-round draft pick and a 2026 second-round pick, while the Avalanche also got forward Givani Smith and a 2027 fifth-rounder.

The Avalanche also traded for goaltender Scott Wedgewood from the Nashville Predators earlier this year, completely revamping their goaltending tandem.

Colorado has won three straight and seven of 10 en route to a 21-15-0 record, good for third in the Central division. It’s set to take on the Utah Hockey Club on Friday night.

Blackwood has been a standout player for the team, consistently delivering strong performances and earning the trust of his teammates and coaches. With this new deal, the Avalanche are showing their commitment to building a solid foundation in net for years to come.

The Avs acquired Blackwood earlier this month in a trade that sent goaltender Alexandar Georgiev to the San Jose Sharks. Blackwood resurrected his career with the Sharks, who acquired him from the New Jersey Devils for a sixth-round draft pick in June 2023. He had a 3.45 goals-against average with an .899 save percentage in 44 games for a struggling San Jose squad last season, and a 3.00 GAA and .909 save percentage in 19 games with the team this season.

He has played in four games for Colorado since the trade and the Avalanche posted a 3-1 record during those games. Blackwood recorded a .931 save percentage in those games.

Colorado General Manager Chris MacFarland said the team is excited to announce the deal.

“We are thrilled to get this deal done now and have Mackenzie under contract for the next six years,” MacFarland said. “As I said when we acquired him, we feel like Mackenzie has just gotten better and better every year and he has come in and done a great job with us in his first few starts.”

MacFarland described Blackwood as a “big bodied, athletic goaltender who is still young and still growing as a goaltender.”

Soon after the trade the Avs faced the Sharks and won 4-2. Before the game Blackwood credited San Jose general manager Mike Grier, an assistant coach with the Devils when Blackwood was there, for giving him a chance after the goalie was hampered by injuries in New Jersey.

“When I got healthy, he believed in me, brought me in and gave me a chance to play,” Blackwood said . “I got myself turned around, got my game up and back on track. He was a big part of giving me the opportunity to do so.”

Georgiev led the league in wins last season and had an 86-41-11 record with the Avalanche. But he struggled to begin this season. In addition to trading Georgiev, Colorado also dealt backup Justus Annunen to Nashville for goalie Scott Wedgewood on Nov. 30.

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said before the Avs-Sharks game that Blackwood has been “fantastic” so far, and that he and Wedgewood are both veterans who feel comfortable in their own skin and are a “little more on the outgoing side of things than our two previous goaltenders.”

Avalanche forward Ross Colton said Blackwood and Wedgewood have “brought some confidence” to the team.

“Both of them have been awesome,” Colton said. “They’re great in the locker room as well. Just in the room, it feels different, which is a good thing.”

Blackwood is from Canada and grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The Colorado Avalanche have announced the signing of goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to a contract extension. The talented netminder has been a key player for the Avalanche this season, posting impressive numbers between the pipes.

Blackwood, who was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade earlier this year, has quickly made a name for himself as one of the top goaltenders in the league. His strong play and consistent performance have earned him a well-deserved contract extension with the team.

Avalanche fans can look forward to seeing Blackwood continue to stand tall in goal and help lead the team to success in the upcoming seasons. With his skill, determination, and talent, Blackwood is sure to be a valuable asset for the Avalanche for years to come. Colorado Avalanche lock up G Mackenzie Blackwood with five-year extension

The Colorado Avalanche have signed goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year contract extension, the team announced on Friday.

Colorado acquired Blackwood, forward Givani Smith and a draft pick in a deal with the San Jose Sharks on Dec. 9. The Avs made their move quickly to secure him long-term.

San Jose received goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, forward Nikolai Kovalenko and a pair of draft picks in the deal.

“When we acquired Mackenzie a few weeks ago, we wanted to let him get to Denver, get acclimated to his new team, new city and then in due time we’d reach out to him and his representatives,” Avs general manager Chris MacFarland said in a release.

“We are thrilled to get this deal done now and have Mackenzie under contract for the next six years.”

Blackwood, 28, has been stellar since joining Colorado, posting a 2.03 goals-against average and a 0.931 save percentage in four games with the Avalanche. He played 19 games with the Sharks before the trade, and has a 9-10-3 record on the season in 23 starts combined for both teams with a 2.83 GAA and 0.913 save percentage.

“As I said when we acquired him, we feel like Mackenzie has just gotten better and better every year and he has come in and done a great job with us in his first few starts,” MacFarland added.

“He’s a big body, athletic goaltender who is still young and still growing. Stylistically, he has fit really well with how we play and has been a perfect fit in our dressing room as well.”

Blackwood was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

San Jose acquired Blackwood from the New Jersey Devils in 2023 in exchange for a draft pick.

Drafted 42nd overall by the Devils in 2015, Blackwood has a career 84-92-25 record with a 3.05 GAA and .905 save percentage split between the Devils, Sharks and Avalanche.

The Thunder Bay, Ont., native represented Canada at the 2019 World Championship, taking home a silver medal.

The Colorado Avalanche have secured their goaltending future by signing Mackenzie Blackwood to a five-year contract extension. The 24-year-old netminder has solidified himself as a key piece of the Avalanche’s roster, posting impressive numbers and earning the trust of his teammates and coaches.

Blackwood, who was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the New Jersey Devils last season, has quickly become a fan favorite in Colorado. His athleticism, quick reflexes, and calm demeanor in the crease have made him a reliable presence between the pipes for the Avalanche.

With this contract extension, the Avalanche have ensured that Blackwood will be a cornerstone of their team for years to come. His consistency and strong play have given the Avalanche confidence in their goaltending situation, allowing them to focus on building a competitive team around him.

Avalanche fans can rest easy knowing that their team has locked up a talented and promising goaltender in Blackwood, setting the stage for continued success in the years ahead.
