MADISON – The Division I men’s basketball committee liked what it was seeing from the Wisconsin Badgers, and that was before they knocked off Purdue on the road Saturday.
Before tip-off the committee revealed its top 16 seeds for the NCAA Tournament, a peek at teams’ standing with a month to go before Selection Sunday.
Wisconsin was a No. 11 seed overall or the third No. 3 seed in the field.
Badgers coach Greg Gard was asked for his thoughts on his team’s place in the bracket preview following a 94-84 win over the Boilermakers at Mackey Arena.
“We’ve got a lot of basketball left to play before that day comes,” he said. “That’s great. That means we’ve got the attention of people, right, and obviously playing good basketball.

“We’re a really good team and I think we’re getting better. That’s the exciting part. They know there is a lot more left to come and it starts with our next game.”

Feb. 15 at Purdue: The Badgers’ 94-84 victory at Mackey Arena won’t soon be forgotten The team’s point total was the most ever for UW in West Lafayette and the second most in a game in the history of the series. Wisconsin’s 61.5% field goal percentage was its second-best for a game this season and the team’s 72% shooting (18 for 25) in the second half its best for a half this season. Graduate guard John Tonje hit 10 of 15 shots and finished with 32 points. Senior guard Max Klesmit added 17 points and redshirt freshman Jack Janicki had career highs for points (11) and minutes (17 minutes 14 seconds).
Coming up for Wisconsin basketball this week
vs. Illinois, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday: Wisconsin gets a chance to avenge a six-point loss to the Fighting Illini that came Dec. 10. The Illini (17-9, 9-7) are coming off a 14-point loss to Michigan State on Saturday and enter the week in seventh in the Big Ten.
vs. Oregon, 11 a.m. Saturday: The Ducks visit the Kohl Center on the back end of a swing through the Midwest that takes them to Iowa on Wednesday. Oregon (18-8, 7-8) enters the week eighth in the standings following a 75-57 victory over Rutgers Sunday.
