Arctic front brings snow squalls to Maine; cold blast expected
An Arctic front sweeping through Maine and New Hampshire on Tuesday brings the potential for dangerous winter weather conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.
Forecasters warn that wind gusts reaching 35 mph to 45 mph could create snow squalls and brief white-out conditions during the Tuesday morning commute. Temperatures will drop throughout the day, with wind chills falling into single digits by afternoon.
The winter weather continues into Wednesday as a clipper system moves through the region. The NWS predicts 2 to 4 inches of snow, with some locations possibly receiving up to 4 inches where heavier bands develop. Drivers should prepare for slick conditions during the Wednesday morning commute.
Thursday will remain cold and breezy, with high temperatures only reaching the teens and twenties south of the mountains. Wind chills could drop below zero during the morning hours before winds begin to slacken in the afternoon as high pressure builds in.

Snowy Wednesday in Maine causes tricky travel conditions, more snow on tap later this week
PORTLAND (WGME)— Snow will taper off by Wednesday afternoon with a few lingering snow showers or squalls in Maine.
An active pattern continues with more snowfall chances through the weekend.
Steady snow will give way to a few lingering snow showers or squalls Wednesday afternoon.
Highs will range from near 40 in southern Maine to 20s across central and northern Maine.
Bitter cold is back for Thursday.
Highs will only be in the teens with sunny skies and breezy winds.
Our next storm likely arrives on Friday afternoon.
There is still considerable uncertainty with this forecast, but at this point it looks like mostly snow with possibly some rain mixing in in far southern Maine.
Snow and possibly some rain will continue into Friday night, wrapping up very early on Saturday.
Cold air is then back for Saturday with highs in the teens or low 20s under sunny skies.
Sunday will start out quiet, but will turn more active for the afternoon and evening.
Another round of snowfall is looking likely into Sunday night, but overall amounts look light at this time.
Due to a milder Monday, if precipitation persists into the day it would likely change to rain. However, most precipitation will likely fall Sunday night as all snow.
As a winter storm swept through Maine on Wednesday, blanketing the state with several inches of snow, travel conditions became treacherous for commuters and residents alike. The heavy snowfall led to slick roads, reduced visibility, and numerous accidents reported on major highways. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of the state, warning of hazardous travel conditions and urging residents to exercise caution while driving. Snow plows worked tirelessly to clear the roads, but the steady snowfall made it challenging to keep up with the accumulation.
Despite the challenges posed by the storm, Maine residents are no strangers to winter weather, and many were prepared with snow tires, shovels, and warm clothing. Schools and businesses remained open, but some opted to close early or allow employees to work from home to avoid the hazardous conditions.
The winter weather is far from over, as forecasters predict another round of snow later this week. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and be prepared for more winter weather in the days to come. Stay safe and stay warm, Maine!

A snowstorm had blanketed the state overnight, dumping several inches of snow and creating treacherous driving conditions.Roads were slick and visibility was low, leading to numerous accidents and delays. Commuters found themselves crawling along highways and side streets, trying to navigate the slippery terrain.
Schools and businesses were forced to delay openings or close altogether, as plow crews worked tirelessly to clear the roads. Public transportation services were also impacted, with buses running behind schedule and some routes canceled.
Despite the challenges, Mainers showed their resilience and determination, helping each other out and braving the elements to get to their destinations. As the snow continued to fall throughout the day, residents were reminded of the harsh reality of winter in Maine – but also the sense of community that comes with it.

Members of the Maine Democratic Party selected Leeds attorney Charles Dingman as its new chair as the party seeks to pivot from November’s losses and focus on attracting a wider swath of Mainers ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election.
The Maine Democratic State Committee on Sunday also chose Imke Schlesser-Jandreau of Bangor to serve as vice chair. Neither Dingman nor Schlesser-Jandreau were endorsed by Maine Gov. Janet Mills who, ahead of Sunday’s election, sent a letter to the committee throwing her support behind former state Rep. Raegan LaRochelle for chair and Jonathan Asen for vice chair.
Candidates to lead Maine Democratic Party hope to focus on rural outreach
“This is a challenging moment for all of us in the party of Maine’s working people, as our new national regime serves the interests of the very few who are wealthy enough not to do their own work, and pursues its agenda without a care for those most vulnerable to their cruelty,” Dingman said in a statement after the vote.
“I believe Maine Democrats spoke loudly and clearly today that we will counter that toxic agenda with all our strength, reaching out to those in our rural and urban communities alike to reconnect with the disillusioned and expand our mission of fairness and opportunity for everyone.”
In addition to working at a private legal practice in Augusta, where he specializes on issues related to health care, Dingman has worked for several government agencies, including serving as general counsel on the Maine Health Care Finance Commission, and volunteers for the board of Maine Equal Justice.
Having grown up on his family farm in Turner and now living in Leeds, Dingman told Maine Morning Star he feels “connected to parts of the state … where we have a lot of our work to do in terms of reaching people who may have lost interest in Democratic Party.”
With a background in communications, which she teaches as an adjunct professor at the University of Maine, Bangor resident Schlesser-Jandreau said in a statement that she will work with Dingman to expand outreach efforts.
“We have an incredible opportunity to rebrand the party, lean into our values, and bring people together,” Schlesser-Jandreau said. “By listening to Mainers who have felt unheard for too long we will build strong grassroots campaigns that unite all corners of the state. I’m excited to work alongside our Chair and Democrats across Maine to make a real difference in every community.”
YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE.
The Maine Democratic Party has elected new leadership with a mission to unite all corners of the state. The party’s new leadership, led by Chairwoman Emily Cain, is focused on bringing together Democrats from all regions of Maine to work towards common goals and create a more inclusive and diverse party.Cain, a former state legislator and congressional candidate, was elected as chairwoman of the Maine Democratic Party in a recent leadership election. In her acceptance speech, Cain emphasized the importance of building a party that represents all Mainers and working towards a more equitable and just society.
The new leadership team also includes Vice Chair Craig Hickman, Secretary Jill Barkley, and Treasurer Sarah Nichols. Together, they are committed to expanding the party’s reach and engaging with voters in every part of the state.
With a focus on grassroots organizing and community engagement, the Maine Democratic Party is aiming to build a stronger, more united party that can effectively advocate for progressive values and policies. As Chairwoman Cain stated, “We must listen to the voices of all Mainers and work together to create a better future for our state.”
The Maine Democratic Party’s new leadership is eager to get to work and looks forward to uniting all corners of the state in the fight for a more just and equitable society. Maine Democrats are encouraged to get involved and help build a party that truly represents the values and interests of all Mainers.

AUGUSTA – Maine Democrats chose new leaders on Sunday, electing attorney Charlie Dingman as chairman and Imke Schlesser-Jandreau as vice chair.
The new leaders, chosen by the Maine Democratic State Committee, will replace outgoing chairwoman Bev Uhlenhake and vice-chair Julian Rogers, who announced earlier this month that they were both stepping down.
The new leaders take over at a critical time in Maine politics, with an open seat for governor in 2026 as well as a U.S. Senate contest in which Republican Sen. Susan Collins has indicated she plans to run for a sixth term.
In a statement, Dingman, of Leeds, said Maine Democrats are wary of potential changes from the Trump administration.
“This is a challenging moment for all of us in the party of Maine’s working people, as our new national regime serves the interests of the very few who are wealthy enough not to do their own work and pursues its agenda without a care for those most vulnerable to their cruelty,” he said.
Democrats did well at the state level last November, maintaining control of the Maine House and Senate as well as the hotly contested 2nd Congressional District.
Yet Republicans gained ground, coming within 100 votes of taking control of the Maine House.
Schlesser-Jandreau, of Bangor, said in a statement that she’s looking forward to working in all communities in Maine.
“We have an incredible opportunity to rebrand the party, lean into our values, and bring people together,” she said. “By listening to Mainers who have felt unheard for too long we will build strong grassroots campaigns that unite all corners of the state.”
Earlier this month, Maine Republicans changed party leadership as well, selecting Jim Deyermond as chairman and Scott Rocknak as vice-chair.
Maine Democrats have recently selected new party leaders in an effort to revitalize and strengthen the party’s presence in the state. After a competitive election process, the following individuals have been chosen to lead the Maine Democratic Party:1. Chair: Kathleen Marra
2. Vice Chair: Jamal Bartley
3. Secretary: Erin Herbig
4. Treasurer: Jamie MelansonThese newly elected leaders bring a wealth of experience, passion, and dedication to the party. They are committed to advancing progressive values, promoting inclusivity, and building a strong grassroots movement in Maine.
Under their leadership, the Maine Democratic Party aims to engage with voters across the state, recruit and support diverse candidates, and work towards achieving meaningful change for all Mainers.
We look forward to seeing the positive impact that these new leaders will have on the party and the state as a whole. Congratulations to Kathleen Marra, Jamal Bartley, Erin Herbig, and Jamie Melanson on their new roles!

The Boston area shook from a rare, but minor, earthquake Monday morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey rated the shaking as a magnitude 3.8, downgraded from the initial magnitude of 4.1. It was centered off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine in York Harbor, about 12 miles underground.
While not destructive, and fairly common in areas with more seismic activity like California, that’s relatively large for the area.
Shaking was felt across the region — as far away as New Haven, Connecticut, and Albany, New York, according to responses sent to U.S. Geological Survey.
Preliminary report is 4.1 mag. positioned off York Harbor, ME. WOW that was wild.
— Pete Bouchard (@PeteNBCBoston) January 27, 2025
I was outside with the dog, and the trees were shuddering. Long, steady rumbling like there was blasting nearby. Went on for several seconds. No apparent damage.
— Pete Bouchard (@PeteNBCBoston) January 27, 2025
Did you capture video of the shaking? Send it to us at shareit@nbcboston.com!
Last year, the Boston area felt shaking from a 4.8 magnitude earthquake centered in New Jersey.
Did you know South Carolina saw a devastating 7.3 earthquake in 1886?

The tremors were felt throughout the city, causing buildings to shake and residents to feel uneasy.NBC Boston reported on the earthquake, capturing the reactions of locals and the aftermath of the seismic event.
