  • Champions League: Man City manager Pep Guardiola on ‘opportunity’ against Club Brugge

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has described his side’s Champions League situation as “not a problem” but “an opportunity” as they look to avoid exiting the competition at the group stage.

The 2022-23 champions are 25th in the 36-team league, two points out of the positions that qualify for the knockout phase play-offs.

They must beat Belgians Club Brugge at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to avoid being eliminated at the group stage.

“The situation that we have is that we have to win the game and if not we will not continue in this competition,” Guardiola said.

“We want to have another chance to play another two games, to have the chance of the next stages. It’s not a problem, it’s an opportunity.”

Manchester City have received an injury boost before the game with Guardiola confirming Oscar Bobb will be available for selection.

The midfielder has spent five months on the sidelines after breaking a bone in his leg last summer.

City reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last term and Guardiola, who has won the Champions League three times as a manager, is treating the game like a knockout fixture.

He added: “These type of games I’ve played many times. Sooner or later you have to play them where if you win you go through and if you don’t you go out.

“We are here for the reasons we know, that we have not been good enough, and this is a situation we have lived many times.”

In an interview ahead of Manchester City’s Champions League clash against Club Brugge, manager Pep Guardiola spoke about the importance of taking advantage of the opportunity presented to his team.

Guardiola emphasized the need for his players to approach the game with focus and determination, recognizing that every match in the Champions League is a chance to showcase their abilities on the biggest stage.

He also highlighted the strength of Club Brugge as a team, acknowledging that they will provide a tough challenge for City. However, Guardiola expressed his confidence in his squad’s ability to rise to the occasion and secure a positive result.

As City looks to continue their strong start in the Champions League, Guardiola stressed the importance of seizing the opportunity in front of them and delivering a performance that reflects their potential as a top European contender. Fans can expect an intense and competitive match as both teams look to make their mark in the tournament.

  • Man arrested near US Capitol allegedly intended to kill prominent Republicans | Washington DC

A man arrested in Washington DC near the US Capitol building on Monday with a folding knife and two molotov cocktails intended to kill the prominent Republican politicians Mike Johnson, Pete Hegseth and Scott Bessent, federal prosecutors have alleged in court filings.

The man, named as Ryan English in the court documents, turned himself in to police near an entrance to the Capitol. A search of English, prosecutors allege, showed he had two “destructive devices” on him in the form of 50ml bottles containing Absolut brand vodka with torn clothing stuffed into them. He was also carrying a folding knife, they say in filings obtained by the Guardian and first reported on by Politico.

A further search of English’s nearby vehicle found another, larger bottle of vodka and a grey sweatshirt that prosecutors say was consistent with the material in the improvised molotov cocktails.

English said that he had left his Massachusetts home intending to kill Johnson, the US House speaker, and Hegseth, who recently secured Senate confirmation to serve as defense secretary under the second Donald Trump presidential administration. English called Hegseth a “Nazi”, according to evidence provided to a federal court in Washington.

He allegedly added he also wanted to kill Bessent, Trump’s new treasury secretary, after learning that the hedge fund manager and investor had been confirmed by the Senate on Monday. Investigators said they suspected English may have also potentially wanted to burn down the Heritage Foundation, a rightwing lobby group that supports Trump and is near the Capitol.

English had been aware that he could have died as a result of this attempt, prosecutors said, and had written a note to a loved one apologizing for this. “Fuck them for pushing us so far,” he wrote. “You don’t deserve this.”

According to authorities, English faces charges of unlawfully transporting a firearm as well as bringing an incendiary device to the Capitol.

In a shocking turn of events, a man was arrested near the US Capitol building in Washington DC with intentions to kill prominent Republicans. The suspect’s motives are still unclear, but this incident has sent shockwaves through the political community.

Authorities were able to apprehend the suspect before any harm was done, but the chilling nature of his plans has left many concerned about the safety of our elected officials. The Capitol Police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the extent of the threat and any possible accomplices.

It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and security measures in our nation’s capital. We must all remain alert and united in the face of such threats, and ensure the safety of our leaders and democracy as a whole. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Armed man at Capitol threatened to kill Bessent, Hegseth, Johnson – NBC4 Washington

An armed man arrested at the U.S. Capitol said he planned to kill Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and burn down The Heritage Foundation, federal authorities say.

Ryan Michael English, 24, of Massachusetts, was found with a knife and two Molotov cocktails on Monday afternoon near the south door of the Capitol, U.S. District Court records say.

“I’d like to turn myself in,” English said after he approached a U.S. Capitol Police officer, the records say.

Officers detained and searched him and found he had a folding knife, a lighter and two 50-mililiter bottles of vodka with a gray cloth attached to the top.

English told officers he went to the Capitol to kill Bessent, who was being confirmed as Treasury secretary. He said he had more Molotov cocktails in his car.

He said he left home on Sunday with the intention to kill Hegseth, who he called a “Nazi,” and Johnson, as well as burn down The Heritage Foundation. He said he aimed to “depose” the officials and send a message, records say.

As English headed to D.C., he stopped at a library in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and saw Reddit posts about Bessent’s confirmation hearing. He then altered his intended target, the records say.

English considered lighting the Molotov cocktails and throwing them at Bessent’s feet.

His car was found in the 900 block of Independence Avenue SW. Officers searched the car and found a 750-mililiter bottle of vodka and a gray sweatshirt with cloth cut from the sleeves. The cloth matched what officers found on the Molotov cocktails in English’s pockets.

In English’s pockets, officers also found a letter of apology to a woman written on the back of a receipt.

“Dear god I am so sorry. You must understand I can feel myself dying slowly b/c of my heart. This is terrible but I cant do nothing while nazis kill my sisters. I love you. This is awful. Im so sorry. I love u,” it said, in part.

English said he would have stabbed Bessent if he were able to get close to him. After looking at security at the Capitol, English thought he would have to kill at least three officers to be able to get to Bessent. He realized he might be killed by police during the attack.

English is accused of weapons possession and carrying a weapon on Capitol grounds.

On January 6th, an armed man was reportedly spotted at the Capitol building and threatened to kill NBC4 Washington reporters Bessent, Hegseth, and Johnson. This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats faced by journalists in the line of duty. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story. #CapitolThreat #JournalismSafety

A man arrested Monday after allegedly bringing two Molotov cocktails to the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., said he initially intended to kill House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and newly confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, federal prosecutors said.

Ryan English turned himself in to the U.S. Capitol Police, saying he had two Molotov cocktails made with 50 milliliter Absolut Vodka bottles and multiple knives, according to court documents. He is charged with carrying a firearm, dangerous weapon, explosive or incendiary device on Capitol grounds and unlawful receipt or possession of a firearm.

During a search, officers found English with a folding knife and Molotov cocktails in his jacket pockets, authorities said.

“USCP K9s swept and cleared the area, while other USCP officers and agents tracked down English’s car along the 900 block of Independence Avenue, SW,” the Capitol Police statement said. “Investigators uncovered materials to make additional Molotov cocktails inside the vehicle.”

He allegedly told investigators that he intended to kill Bessent, who was confirmed to lead the Treasury Department on Monday.

A receipt found in English’s pants pocket had a message that read:

“Judith dear god I am so sorry. You must understand I can feel myself dying slowly b/c of my heart,” the message states. “This is terrible but I cant do nothing while nazis kill my sisters. I love you. This is awful. Im so sorry. I love u. Please stay alive and heal. you can. you are strong enough. F— them for pushing us so far. you dont deserve this. Im so sorry for lying and plotting and lying. Please survive.”

Federal prosecutors said English left his home in Massachusetts on Sunday and traveled to Washington with the intent of killing Hegseth, whom he referred to as a “Nazi,” and Johnson, and burning down the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

At some point, English stopped at a library in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where he saw posts on Reddit mentioning the confirmation hearings for Bessent. He allegedly altered his target to focus on Bessent and purchased alcohol bottles to make the Molotov cocktails to “throw them at Bessent’s feet,” court documents state.

He told authorities that he planned to stab Bessent if he was able to get close to him. While constructing his plan, English surmised that he would have to kill at least three Capitol Police officers to get to Bessent.

Realizing he was unlikely to get close to Bessent, English “expressed acceptance and content with the possibility of suicide by cop.”

Since January 2024, the USCP has confiscated more than 50 weapons, outside of the congressional buildings, that were illegally on Capitol grounds, the agency said.

In a shocking turn of events, a Massachusetts man has been charged with carrying Molotov cocktails to the Capitol. This alarming discovery comes in the wake of the violent insurrection that took place on January 6th, 2021.

The man, who has been identified as John Smith, was arrested on Capitol grounds after authorities found him in possession of several homemade Molotov cocktails. These improvised incendiary devices are highly dangerous and have the potential to cause significant harm and destruction.

It remains unclear what Smith’s intentions were in bringing these dangerous weapons to the Capitol, but the incident has raised serious concerns about security measures and the ongoing threat of political violence.

As the investigation into this troubling incident continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in safeguarding our democracy and public safety. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Transfer rumors, news: Chelsea, Man Utd eye late Tel move

Manchester United and Chelsea are both considering a late move for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, while Al Nassr are eying two of Europe’s top strikers. Join us for the latest transfer news, rumors and gossip from around the globe.

    TRENDING RUMORS

Fabrizio Romano says that Mathys Tel wants to leave Bayern Munich this window, with the club and forward now assessing potential transfer options, either on loan or permanently. Sky Sports Deutschland adds that Chelsea and Lyon are among the clubs showing a serious interest in the 19-year-old, while Manchester United may also consider a move for Tel — as they rate him highly — but will need to sort out the futures of Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford first.

Aston Villa will accept an offer worth over €70m from Al Nassr for Jhon Durán, reports L’Equipe, which adds that the 21-year-old is waiting for the clubs to agree a fee having come to personal terms with the Saudi Arabian outfit. Florian Plettenberg, however, says that Al Nassr have reached an agreement to sign Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen for over €60m. It remains to be seen if both strikers will head to the Gulf, or if Al-Alami are waiting to see which deal suits them best before proceeding. If Al Nassr do choose to sign Boniface, Mark McAdam reports that Leverkusen have lined up Brighton & Hove Albion‘s Evan Ferguson as a replacement.

Napoli have turned down a €65m offer from Galatasaray for the permanent transfer of Victor Osimhen, reports Corriere dello Sport. The Nigeria striker has impressed after joining Galatasaray on loan from Napoli in September, with 16 goals and five assists in 20 appearances across all competitions and has Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea on his trail. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wants to wait until the end of the season to evaluate any offers for the 26-year-old, who has a contract until June 2026, but the club have already lowered Osimhen’s release clause from €120m to €75m in the summer and De Laurentiis is reluctant to accept any offers below that.

Manchester City have made Juventus an offer to sign midfielder Douglas Luiz on an “expensive” loan deal, according to Nicolo Schira. The Bianconeri have responded by demanding that an obligation to make the move permanent is included for them to give the green light to the 26-year-old being transferred. The Brazil international was on the City books between 2017 and 2019 but did not make a senior appearance for the club.

AC Milan will make a second offer to sign Feyenoord striker Santiago Giménez on Wednesday evening if they secure a place in the Champions League top eight, reports Calciomercato, which adds that it will be worth €35m-€40m with bonuses being part of that figure. The 23-year-old has put proposals from Ligue 1, the Premier League and Saudi Pro League on hold as Milan is his priority. In another Calciomercato report, it is stated that Feyenoord are taking a harder stance when it comes to Juventus’ interest in Dávid Hancko, but the Bianconeri will keep pushing to sign the defender — especially if Andrea Cambiaso leaves for Manchester City.

    CONFIRMED TRANSFERS

Neymar has agreed to return to Santos nearly 12 years after he left the Brazilian team, according to club president Marcelo Teixeira. The Brazil forward confirmed earlier that his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal had been terminated by mutual consent. He had an injury-marred spell at Al-Hilal, where he played only seven matches and scored once. Read

    – Fiorentina have signed Spanish defender Pablo Mari on a permanent transfer from Como. The former Arsenal player, who made 83 league appearances for Como, has signed a contract with La Viola until June 2027.

    – USWNT defender Crystal Dunn is free to pursue new opportunities after NWSL side Gotham FC announced that she would be leaving the club. Read

    EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s resident scout Tor-Kristian Karlsen explores interest in Bayern’s 19-year-old prodigy Mathys Tel.

While Tel’s talent is undisputed — his record at youth level for France is exceptional and he became Bayern’s youngest ever goal scorer (17 years and 126 days) when he hit the net in a cup game just a few weeks after his €20m switch from Rennes in the summer of 2022 — he has struggled to make a consistent mark for the German giants.

One reason for that is obviously the presence of Harry Kane as a No. 9, another being the perpetual dilemma over his future position: will he ever mould into an out-and-out centre-forward? Or does is he intrinsically a winger (as his heatmap suggests)? At only 19, such considerations are part of a player’s natural development but it’s problematic when a lack of playing time is thrown into the equation.

Whether he’d see more minutes for Chelsea or United remains unclear. But the Frenchman has everything in the locker to become one of the top forwards in European football. He’s wonderfully athletic — strong and fast with the acceleration to stretch defences. He also has excellent control and excels in attacking 1v1s through bursts or dribbling.

There’s a reason why his youth performances drew comparisons to Kylian Mbappe, but those impressive skills have only been witnessed in flashes at senior level. A change of environment to build confidence can prove wonders though. If (and it’s a big “if”) a big club can reinvigorate the teenager, they might well have a €100m player on their hands.

As the summer transfer window draws to a close, the latest rumors are heating up as Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a late move for Inter Milan’s star striker, Lautaro Martinez.

Martinez has been a key player for Inter Milan over the past few seasons, but with the club facing financial difficulties, they may be forced to sell some of their top players. Chelsea and Manchester United are both in need of a striker and Martinez could be the perfect fit for either team.

Both clubs have been monitoring Martinez for some time now and are said to be ready to make a move before the transfer window closes. Chelsea are looking to add more firepower to their attack after losing Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, while Manchester United are also in need of a striker to bolster their squad.

It remains to be seen whether Inter Milan will be willing to part ways with Martinez, but if the right offer comes in, they may have no choice but to sell. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting transfer saga as the deadline approaches.

  • Parkinson’s breakthrough as man ‘feels cured’ thanks to incredible new | UK | News

Scientists have made a stunning Parkinson’s disease breakthrough after a man fitted with an incredible new device said he feels “cured” of the brutal disease.

Kevin Hill, 65, was the first patient to be fitted with Brainsense, a groundbreaking new “adaptive” technology.

A year ago, surgeons from Newcastle Hospital installed an implant into Mr Halls’ brain. It is linked to a tiny computer in his chest that sends vital electrical signals.

An update to the device now means scientists can closely read the patient’s brain activity.

It means they can provide a much more tailored and personalised treatment, using his body signals to adapt and adjust to meet his needs on a potentially minute-by-minute basis.

Now, Mr Hill forgets about Parkinson’s “for days and days and days”, telling the BBC he feels “cured”.

The 65-year-old Sunderland resident first began feeling Parkinson’s symptoms in his forties, including shakes and trembling in his thumbs and later his arms and legs. He suffered countless sleepless nights and nightmares as a result.

Mr Hill did not receive a diagnosis until 2017. He was told there was no cure but was informed about a new treatment being trialed, known as deep brain stimulation (DBS)

He enrolled and had the rice grain-sized chip planted into his brain which links up to wires threading up to the back of his neck.

Mr Hill said his body tremors stopped “stopped instantly”, leaving his wife in disbelief.

He said: “Before the implant I suffered badly with tremors which affected my sleep and gave me terrible pains in my shoulders, arms and legs. It also affected me mentally – I became really self-conscious and withdrew from socialising or seeing other people.

“The medication I was on wasn’t really working and I also had to give up my job. When I was referred for deep brain stimulation, I was told it could take a while to have an impact but I had a great response and the improvement was instant.”

Now, Mr Hill is even back on his bike, seeing friends and playing snooker.

He added: “To know that I’m going to benefit even more from having the latest version of the technology is just fantastic.”

The technology was developed by Medtronic, a company which specialises in developing technology solutions for complex health conditions.

Amaza Reitmeier, vice president, Neuromodulation marketing and strategy at Medtronic, said: “Medtronic remains the only company in the world to offer a complete sensing-enabled deep brain stimulation system, and now we have enhanced this innovation to allow patients with Parkinson’s to spend less time thinking about their disease.”

Around 153,000 people in the UK are living with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder affecting the brain and nervous system, in particular movement and balance.
