Outgoing city manager honored in Steamboat Springs
The city of Steamboat Springs proclaimed Tuesday, Jan. 21 “Gary Suiter Day” to honor the outgoing city manager.
“You have made a mark on this community, and we certainly appreciate everything that you have done and the breadth and depth of the knowledge and the expertise, and you have served a lot of the people in this room in a lot of different ways,” said City Council President Gail Garey.
“We certainly appreciate you and thank you, and this is just a small testament to the lives that you have touched and all that you have done,” she added.
Suiter, who announced his retirement last fall, addressed the crowd Tuesday evening at what was the last council meeting of his Steamboat tenure.
“To the city council members, past and present … your support has been unbelievable through my tenure here and very, very important to our collaborative success,” said Suiter.
“Secondly, I want to acknowledge the amazing staff that we have here … I can’t describe enough how proud I am of the staff that we have here. They are talented, they are dedicated, they are committed, and they are smart and bring great ideas to the table.”
“Last, but not least, the citizens … The citizens here are dedicated, they care, they are involved, we hear from them, quite a bit, right? And that is what makes a successful community,” added Suiter. “Those are three pillars of a successful community, you have got to have great leadership at the council dais behind me, you have got to have solid staff members that are committed to civics and civil service, and you have got to have a community that cares, and I think that really defines Steamboat Springs.”
Suiter became city manager in June 2016 after serving in the interim role for eight months. When he accepted the permanent position, he committed to serving the city for four years. He wound up serving eight. His remarks of gratitude Tuesday came before a parade of public comments delivered by community members, former and current council members and city staff, all of whom expressed their gratitude for his leadership and service to the city.
“Gary, I will never forget when you led our first retreat as a council, you said something very important that touched my heart and I will always remember,” said former council member Kathi Meyer. “You said that your job was to make us successful … so, with great humility and love, from us to you — thank you, we are going to miss you.”
Kim Weber, the city’s finance director, spoke on behalf of city staff and thanked Suiter for his guidance in helping the city navigate times where leadership turnover persisted.
“Gary has given me a lot of advice on how to get through that revolving door, and it’s just keep your head down and do your job, which we do, but the best part about Gary, in my opinion, is his motto, ‘Manage down, up and out.’ Meaning the staff, the council and the citizens. We have had city managers before that have done one or the other pretty well,” said Weber. “Gary, you mastered them all. You make every city employee feel valued, you make every single citizen feel valued, you make every member of council feel valued, and that is what makes you such a great guy, so thank you.”
Deputy City Manager Tom Leeson is set to take over for Suiter and serve as city manager on an interim basis as the city proceeds with reviewing applications submitted for the role.
Council members will review candidate recommendations during an executive session at their Feb. 4 meeting.

The Raiders have found their new General Manager.
According to multiple reports, Las Vegas is finalizing a deal to hire Tampa Bay assistant Buccaneers assistant G.M. John Spytek for the role.
Spytek, 44, has been with the Buccaneers since 2016. He first served as director of player personnel before being promoted to vice president of player personnel in 2021. He was promoted again to assistant G.M. in 2023.
After playing his college ball at Michigan — where he was a teammate of Raiders minority owner Tom Brady — Spytek spent time with the Lions, Eagles, Browns and Broncos before making his way to Tampa Bay.
Spytek was also in the building with Brady when the quarterback came to Tampa Bay in 2020.

Titans hire Chiefs’ Mike Borgonzi as new general manager

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi has reached agreement on a five-year contract to become the Titans‘ new general manager, tying him to Tennessee through the 2029 season.
Borgonzi served the previous 16 seasons with Kansas City and has been the Chiefs assistant general manager for the past four years. He’ll replace former Titans general manager Ran Carthon, who held the position for two seasons.
The Chiefs promoted Borgonzi to assistant general manager in 2021. He served three seasons as the Chiefs’ director of football operations (2018-20) and one season as the director of player personnel in 2017.
Kansas City hired Borgonzi to be their college scouting administrator in 2009. He went on to be their manager of football operations in 2010, then pro personnel scout from 2011 to 2012. Borgonzi spent 2013 and 2014 as the assistant director of pro scouting before becoming co-director of player personnel from 2015 to 2016.
Before joining the Chiefs, Borgonzi was the assistant recruiting coordinator at Boston College (2007-08). Boston College played in the ACC championship twice and won the 2007 Champs Sports Bowl while Borgonzi was there.

Jeff Torborg, World Series champ and former MLB manager, dead at 83
Jeff Torborg, a World Series champion catcher who played 10 seasons in the majors and became a manager for 11 more years, has died, the Chicago White Sox announced Sunday. He was 83.
Torborg, a New Jersey native, played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels during his playing career, which lasted from 1964 to 1973. He managed the White Sox, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins.

He was on the Dodgers’ World Series-winning team in 1965. He was also the Marlins’ manager to open the 2003 season before he was fired and replaced with Jack McKeon. The Marlins defeated the New York Yankees in six games to win the World Series.
“Former MLB catcher and Chicago White Sox manager Jeff Torborg passed away this morning in Westfield, N.J. He was 83 years old,” the team said in a post on X.

“Torborg was named the 1990 A.L. Manager of the Year after guiding the Sox to a 94-68 record that season, a 25-game improvement from the previous year.”
Torborg batted .214 with 101 RBI and 297 hits in 1,525 plate appearances in his 10-year playing career. He got his start as manager with the Indians four years after he retired. He was only the manager for one full season and two half-seasons before he was fired.
He guided the White Sox to a 94-68 record in 1990 behind Carlton Fisk, Greg Hubbard and Bobby Thigpen, but the team didn’t make the postseason. He took the Mets job in 1992 and didn’t have the same success.
He served as an interim manager for the Expos in 2001 and was the Marlins’ full-time manager in 2002 before he was let go in the middle of the 2003 season.
